Note 3 has higher animation frame rate than Note 4! - Galaxy Note 4 General

Hello every one
I want to put in a quick overview on my experience with the N4 for 3 days of use till date,
Coming from the note 3 & Note 2 before it.
The phone is in a sense feels not a huge leap over the Note 3, The noteworthy upgrades that i enjoy are the better aesthetics ,the much improved low light camera capabilities (including OIS which turns out to be much useful than i thought) and the improved accuracy of the S pen which i use extensively for business and pleasure.
But what bugs me -and i felt this with every note 4 i held not just mine- Is the frame rates of animations , I am not talking about lags or stutters (which are no better or worse than my note 3) but the smoothness of stutter free animation.
I held both my note 4 & note 3 side by side , Loaded with the same set of apps and both with Nova launcher, And the animations of scrolling through the home screen or scrolling through lists ,apps etc feels smoother on the Note 3.
I feel that upping the screen resolution has its toll on the Snap dragon 805 ,the combination of SD800+FHD seems to work better than SD805+QHD , and the sad part for me is that no matter how hard i try , i just cannot see any considerable deffirence in the N4 as opposed to the N3's screen that warrants the compromise of performance (or battery life if any, not tested this yet).
Also, I am not a heavy gamer but i occasionally play DC's Injustice which is a heavy 3D game, The game plays better on the Note 3 than on the Note 4 while both are cold(higher FPS but a tad longer loading times) , Once things start heating a bit , the throttling on the note 4 kicks much sooner and heavier than on note 3, a price to pay in 3D performance for a non descreminable bump to screen quality?
The screen of the Note 4 have much cooler whites than on Note 3 i give it that, But it is disturbing to find the performance lacking.
I'm keeping the Note 4 as i like lots of things in it, But i think it missed out on being a really perfect phone.
Just my thoughts

When i compare my s800 note3.and my exynos note4. Note 4 is definetly faster in everyway and its very obvious not even close. When i put power saving on note 4 performance is pretty much equals. And when i compare my exynos version with my friends snapdragon note 4 performance difference is definetly there but i dont think its cuz s805 has lower performance i think its just about software. Only 1 complain i have is recent apps 0.5 sec delay everything else very very smooth that i couldnt expect from samsung as an old.nexus user. Also it heats very less and i didnt see throttlong frame drops.(only benchmarks.show its throttled.)

I seen all complain from S805. I am happy i decide to pick Exynos 7 (5433) edition. I am existing Note 3 owner as well. I can assure Exynos edition N910C animation smoothness is far ahead than Note 3.

Maybe. I havent noticed it myself, not having tested them side by side though (i could, i just havent ).
I wouldnt have minded the Note 4 being FHD as long as the screen itself was as good in terms of white balance, realistic colours, brightness, etc etc etc. But I dont see a reason personally NOT to have it QHD.
That being said, the spen and multitasking, as well as the small design changes and camera, make it an easy choice of course. However, I would not have minded a FHD screen, as mentioned.
Maybe the 5.0 update helps. Quite looking forward to seeing how that update will affect the note 4.

The Annandtech tests back when the LG G3 was launched showed that 800& FHD gave the same performance as 805& QHD. You notice a big difference on the LG G3 which has an 801 with QHD. That phone suffers from terrible frame rates and lag. The Note 4 I find is fine.

Offcourse the resolution will kill performance. It's alot of pixels to drive, and it makes the screen sweet to look at!
There is software that can force a lower resolution to games and stuff if you suffer from low framerate.
The 805 has alot of power though. Just benchmarked my tablet with the Tegra 3 processor (with overclock) and i get around 2800 points in 3Dmark unlimited.
About 20050 on my note 4 Snapdragon stock.
Quite the performance boost in just a few years.

Gamebench v1.3 analysis of Asphalt 8 game play - Device: Note 4 Exynos

On CM12 my SD note 4 absolutely flies, unfortunately TW is far slower than it should be on such great hardware; hopefully the Lollipop update will be more optimised

I think this problem is for the note 4 exynos users because the frame rate is poor. I'm coming from note 2 and my brother had a note 3 snap Dragon and the note 4 is a downgrade where framerate is concerned. I compared it with the note 2 and note 3 and it is obviously different. and saying that the reason for its lack of fluidity is because of its quad hd display isn't good enough. why make a screen with such high ppi and not have good gpu rendering? anyway I don't believe note 4 users with the snapdragon processor are having this rendering problem because the snapdragon is actually a better processor. and lastly I hope that the lollipop update should, in some way, improve the graphic performance of the exynos 5433. I look forward to all future development!

Exynos Note 4 has a higher frame rate than Snapdragon variant in every title - use Gamebench to measure practical real life FPS performance not the benchmarks

You seems to be very well informed [emoji14]
Actually Exynos 5433 beats the SD805 in games and performance. And both of them outperform the Note 3.

Thats great to hear seeing that i have the exynos verision lol but back to the main topic, the frame rate is actually lower than the note 3. this isnt gaming performance but rather regular usage. Like using third party lockscreens, coming in and out of app drawers, and just regular transitions, yuh know? stuff like that. i held it side by side to the note 3 and i was dissappointed. and people say that the exynos is better but i saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83Hkb3FAncc and it clearly shows that the graphics on the snapdragon is better. :/ i'm not trying to be a hater or anything like that. i was just dissappointed in the framerate. spread love and joy!

The Snapdragon has a bit better GPU power, but the Exynos runs better games due to its more simple architecture. And both have higher frame rate then Note 3.

thanks! I looked at a couple videos a few minutes ago and the exynos won over the snapdragon so I do have the better device! lol and well I hope the lollipop update activates the total 64 bit processor.

The Note 3 is quicker than the Note 4, but it's probably software and the screen.
The difference between SD and Exynos is negligible really. I don't trust Exynos since S2 days when games took time to become optimised or never came out for it at all.

iPhone 6 Plus vs Note 4 vs Nexus 6: Specs Comparison

Came across this comparison, Note 4 crushes the competition.
Note 4 was found to have superior:
Display
Battery
Camera
Storage
RAM
I really think with the 16MP Camera, Samsung has finally created the best smartphone camera.
Check it out.
Source
Display.- Yes, definitely.
Battery.- I have heard the iphone 6+ has better SOT from most reviews. Not sure, though.
Camera.- iPhone has better low light shots, Samsung has better day light shots.
Storage.- Well... you can get a 128GB iphone, but that will depend on what you want to waste, for the same price, yes, you get more space with the note
RAM.- Android uses more ram than iOS, I'd say that iphone performs smoother due to optimization.
I've only looked into half a dozen reviews, and I'm not going to deny that the iPhone 6+ has some strengths (battery life). These phones are both excellent so I don't really see a clear-cut victor. Maybe that will change over time with new software.
I've been using the camera non-stop all week because I've been at a wedding in Sonoma. I'm not a photographer by a long shot and have used the camera on "auto" with HDR "on." I took this one this morning at a vinyard. They asked me to e-mail it to then to use on their website.
Ultra low light is nothing to write home about. Low light can be impressive.
Here's another good pic...
The Note 4's camera is good. And as a point-and-shoot which is the way 90% of people will use it. If I can get shots like this, anyone can.
At the end of the day, we have amazing choices of phones right now especially if you consider the Droid Turbo (I know it's Verizon only, but rumored variants coming to other carriers).
The differences between them have definitely narrowed and it comes down to what's most important to the customer. MAC/iOS people gonna iPhone, Android fanatics gonna Nexus... and the rest are up for grabs.
The Note 4 is definitely an amazing phone. Built in multi-window, floating apps, and the stylus are freaking amazing for a power user like myself. I can't believe I waited this long to jump on board.
The iPhone's better low light photos and marginally better battery life (if that's the case) is irrelevant to the features exclusive to the Note 4 line. (Apple isn't even an option for me even so.)
You just can't really go wrong if you're getting a top of the line phone for what you want. Sure there are some sacrifices to weigh, but there's never going to be a perfect phone for everyone.
To borrow from Nintendo, NOW WE'RE PLAYING WITH POWER!
Note 4 has the advantage of the external battery. You can buy Samsung battery pack with the charger and stop worrying about battery life. Now about ram ios doesn't require the same as Android to run smoothly but if you want to have over 3-4 tabs on safari without refreshing then you have a problem. Look at the new Ipad air with 2gb ram

Just remembered, Note 4 also has the MicroSD card slot. That's a huge difference in them.
I just switched to a Note 4 from an iPhone 6 Plus after 2.5 months. Here's my feedback:
Display - Note 4 is definitely better.
Battery - My iPhone lasted much longer than Note 4 but that may be because I have been installing apps/widgets left and right. We'll see once things settle.
Camera - Note 4 is slightly better for low-light pictures.
Storage - I had a 64GB iPhone and that was good for me. With Note 4, I will need to buy a card.
RAM - Note 4 may have 3GB of RAM (vs. 1GB on iPhone) but my iPhone ran much smoother than Note 4. I get occasional freeze and lag with Note 4.
I have booth Note 4, iPhone 6 plus and a Nexus 5.
Camera. Slighty better but much slower than the iPhone. On the other hand is speed essensial for my kind of usage.
Smoothness. Note 4 ain't close to Nexus and iPhone. I was a bit shocked when I noticed that not very much had happened since the S5, my chinese MX4 is butter compared if you counting all small lags. I flashed latest firmware two days ago and it feels a little bit better.
Storage. Has 64 on the iPhone and it's more than I need right now.
Display. Really good but I haven't used it outdoor on a sunny beach yet
Battery. Not as good as I hoped for. I have exactly the same apps and usage on all androids and it's very ok but not stunning. So far LG G2 and OnePlus roles my SOT with hours. I have a feeling the iPhone is slightly better. You can't really count on tests like GSM arena, they don't have my 84 apps installed.
Im using both for 2.5 months now.
Screen=note 4 is better but both great
Camera= i dont see any speed difference. Daylight note 4 better. In low light 6 plus abit better. Both very close.
Video=quality for note 4 Ois performance better on 6 plus.
Performance: note 4 is faster on pretty much every 3rd party app. 6 plus faster on system apps(gallery, phone etc)
Smoothness is pretty much same for me i dont realy see big difference. Only recents app has 0.5 delay on note 4(happens sometimes)
6 plus definetly needs 2gb ram safari is headache with 1gb. 2-3 tabs then reload is suck. Multitasking is better on note 4 too. But both good.
Battery in my usage note 4 is better.
From the design iPhone 6 plus loses to the Note 4. Apple did absolutely nothing for the iPhone 6 Plus other than stretching the iPhone 6. (or shrinking the iPad Air, depending on how you look at it) The phone is so slippery and uncomfortable even for occasional one-handed operation. I know people will augment the grips with cases, but that still does not help with its underlying design incompetence. Some of these iSheep would argue how inferior plastic is compared to aluminum used for soda cans, and would insist that cases should not be a consideration when discussing phone designs. How the times have changed.. I totally share Erica Griffin's experience with iPhone 6 Plus' ergonomics. (minus the girl jeans part, lol) Compare that with the Note 4, it looks abundantly clear who has more knowledge and experience in manufacturing phablets.
The rest of stuff is more about iOS v. Android to me, and I know which way I roll. There is just no competition. Though it does help to make a decision that iPhone 6 Plus lags and Safari refreshes tabs more than ever before thanks to the puny 1 GB of RAM Apple deliberately put in for planned obsolescence.
Note 4 has very good screen and battery life for me, but regarding smoothness Samsung is miles behind my Nexus 5 or even 4. Storage is impressive with SD card, but then again I didn't have problems with space on Nexus either. It is very good hardware with very bad soft. Things changed drastically with CM12 tough, now it is far smoother than Nexus 5.
I do not understand all the fuss with photos, none of the phones has good enough camera to replace proper camera. You can take a photo when needed.
If u don't mind rooting, Note 4 is great piece of hardware. If you prefer not to do it you might be better off with Nexus 6.
The best camera in the world should be the one you carrying around daily
I think and hope that the Lollipop for the Note is going to give it a bit less bumpy road. Some people care for it and some don't, same as with everything else in the world. If the Note can give me 50-60 fps and less hiccup I'd love the ride.

G4 To Note 5?

Those of you who have the device, Help!!!
I have the amazing LG G4 and it camera is the best i've used and seen, but something attracting me towards the Note 5 even though it has 32gb and no SD card...
How is it compared to G4? i mainly looking for better processing power and more custom roms in the future as well as awesome camera(which the note has), would u switch from G4?
Quick read: I went from the G4 to the Note 5 and am staying with the Note 5 no question. More detail below.
I made this switch. Before the G4 I had the Note 3 which had a extended battery and a 128GB microSD card in it. When rumors flew that the Note 5 had a sealed battery and no expansion I got the G4. The G4 has serious headphone out audio quality and volume issues so bought the Note5. I have the Note 5 since the 21st and here are my observations.
Screen: The G4 has a great LCD screen. I don't like the on screen buttons but got used to them. When I got the Note 5 I remembered how much I liked the amoled style display. Saturated colors, deep blacks. Read displaymate's review of the Note 5 screen. It's insane how good this screen is.
Speed: I never had any issues withe the G4. That being said the Note 5 is snappier. There are a ton of benchmarks of the Snapdragon 808 and the Exynos chip in the Note 5 (same SoC as the Galaxy S6). With this and the extra ram you will be getting a speed boost. On the Note 5.
Camera: There are a ton of G4 vs S6 comparisons out there. Most place the G4 as the slight winner with more accurate colors in low light. In good light both are close enough to not let good-light performance be a deciding factor. The G4 has an 8MP front shooter instead of 5MP on the Note 5. The Note 5 DOES have a faster responding camera and that makes a big difference to me in my camera experience. Both do manual mode and RAW capture. The G4 can do a 30 sec exposure vs 10 sec on the Note 5 which is a shame. In the end, look at the extensive comparisons out there.
Audio: On headphones the Note 5 kills it. The G4 isn't even close and this is what makes me the most happy about the switch. BT, which I don't use, seems to favor the Note 5 as well. Phone speakers are weak on both, but I don't know who in their right mind would listen to anything important on a smartphone speaker.
Battery life: The Note 5 is great and I have made peace with not being able to replace or expand it. The fast charging and 2 wireless charging standards being supported is really useful. If you haven't tried wireless charging then do so. All of my previous phones that I've kept for more than 1.5 years experienced a micro USB connector failure. Wireless charging removes that concern. The G4 does not support this out of the box and that is too bad. That curved back isn't going to make wireless charging any easier anyway. Look again at displaymate's review of the Note 5 screen. It is crazy efficient.
User experience. No real issues with the G4. Their customizations were fine by me. Touchwiz doesn't bother me either and if it does, that is what custom launchers are for. I do love the fingerprint reader on the Note 5. It is so seamless unlocking the phone with it. There are options for expanding the storage on the Note 5 either through the small USB OTG flash drives out there to wireless expansion (look up HooToo, their devices are well loved and I just got one)
Rooting and ROMS: The G4 is probably a safer bet here. There is already root for it, though no custom ROMS that I know of this early. Samsung is an unknown quantity here. There have been some mumbling that Samsung has software that will brick your Phone (especially on Verizon and ATT) if you try to root it, but until a method is found and someone tries it, it is too early to say. Samsung really wants their phones adopted by the Enterprise, hence the knox 2.0 and such. They are probably trying harder to make it harder for those like us to root.
If you have followup questions let me know
wow that was detailed, i appricate that.
I have noticed G4 camera can come a bit far ahead the S6 specially in low light, it kinda very important good feature to me, i've seen many photos of Note 5 and S6 in low light and they kinda ok, but not as good as G4.
About audio you totally right, it sucks on G4, no idea why.
Now can u test angry birds 2 on level 5 at least and tell me how it plays, does it lag, no? if possible, test other heavy games and tell me if there is a lag.
Also i heard Note 5 have memory management issues as S6, can you replicate that?

I am downloading Angry Birds 2 now, but it may take a while to get to Lv5.
I have not had memory management issues on the Note 5. I cannot replicate this and do a fair amount of multitasking. If there is a repeatable procedure to test this let me know and I am happy to try it.
No joke on that G4 camera. In low light it just does white balance better. You might be able to compensate this in post processing if using a Note 5 (especially if you capture in RAW). But if you just want to snap and send then your best bet is snapseed which is amazing in how powerful it is for pic manipulation.

So u do have it for 5 days, and u not regretting moving to Note 5 from G4? have u got the 32gb? cause that the only version here.
It's quite a lot of money, and i won't exchange the phone for at least 2-3 years, would u say in a single heartbeat, no looking back, that moving from G4 to Note 5 is good step?

There is not even the slightest stutter on angry birds 2 level 5 on the Note 5, the phone is much faster and snappier than the G4, better screen, better sound, better battery life, S-pen (that can go backwards and get stuck Ayooo!) , no on screen buttons (huge for me) , camera's are comparable especially if they are all using the sony sensor, the samsung sensor was the one that lost to the G4 in low light.
Does the note 5 also have split samsung/sony sensors? or just sony?

Well, the key to that would be in the op it said custom roms, so far this phone is not even rooted... It may never be? So I guess I would weigh that heavily if I were you, hardware wise it is a completely sound upgrade and I would not be disappointed if I were a G4 owner and the G5 came out with Note5 specs, I would upgrade to it.
I personally would do the upgrade if I could do it in a manner that was not too expensive. Otherwise I would say they are both great phones, the N5 is certainly faster and has a much better spec sheet across the board, the cameras are roughly equal, but I feel that the much better processing power offered by the N5 will lead to better reaction time on pictures and better video.

Okay just finished Lv. 5. Man that game has changed since I played the original. No lag here.
No regrets whatsoever except that I wished I waited for the Note 5. Now I have to go through the trouble of unloading the G4.
Regarding the other question, I got the 64GB version. Again, no regrets here as the audio is dynamite and the camera is close enough to the G4 for me.
If you get the 32GB then of course you will spend some time now and then migrating photos and music. I am on an unlimited data plan still from Verizon so I will stream live content to my hearts content. Look at the small USB OTG memory sticks or the HooToo or similar devices. These can make your migrations quick and keep with some buffer space on the Note's internal storage.
Off to work now. Post questions if you have more.

My Note 5 has the Sony sensors so maybe that's why I have not been disappointed in the camera at all.
Might actually do that the note is attractive. There are no slowdown with touchwiz?

Quick read: I went from the G4 to the Note 5 and am staying with the Note 5 no question. More detail below.
I made this switch. Before the G4 I had the Note 3 which had a extended battery and a 128GB microSD card in it. When rumors flew that the Note 5 had a sealed battery and no expansion I got the G4. The G4 has serious headphone out audio quality and volume issues so bought the Note5. I have the Note 5 since the 21st and here are my observations.

Benchmarks.....
My note 4 performs almost the same as my nexus 4. yet has higher benchmark!
UI was smoother on nexus 4!
I gave Samsung 3 chances every time i thought its not like that any longer, i will not ever buy Samsung again :S
Might buy it now!!! Oh idk is 32gb really enought? Is it not gonna lag?

I don't have benchmarks, but most of the thorough reviews for the Note 5 have benchmarked them against the G4. It beats the G4 in most of the benchmarks, sometimes by a lot, but that doesn't mean that the G4 lags that much compared to the Note5. The difference in UI responsiveness is there, but it is very small and it's not enough by itself that it should sway a person one way or another. Benchmarks just do not reflect what a user's UI experience will be.

It's not going to lag. If you're concerned about the 32GB do this test. Look at your storage usage on the G4. If it's well under 32GB then great. If it's close to or more than 32GB then ask yourself if you would be put off having to migrate things off and delete other things to get to under 32GB. That is how I determined the 64GB Note 5 would be enough for me.
Ok i gonna buy it hopefully not gonna regret.
Just moved from the G4 to the Note 5, no doubt its a better phone. The Note Feels like a complete phone, I felt like the G4 lacked polish it would lag and audio quality was pretty bad. However I would give the camera nod to the G4, especially in low light

iPhoneX vs Note9 benchmarks...iPhoneX wins?

https://www.tomsguide.com/us/galaxy-note-9-benchmarks,news-27773.html
I wonder about these tests although it's really comparing apples to oranges with different CPU and OS but some things can't lie, and the tests are designed to be platform independent.
I gotta say I'm slightly disappointed the snapdragon 845 performs poorer in comparison... And supposedly the Exynos version this year performs worse than the snapdragon, which is a first.
Ask me if I care??
Do you care?
nah lol
They specifically only showed the benchmarks where iPhone X beats the note. There are also many where it's the other way around and by a large margin. And anyways the note 8 still beats almost everything for everyday usage if you look at some of the real life speed test comparisons on Youtube, and also it's still the best at memory management.

Hey if you want subway surfers to launch in 2.453 seconds the I phone X is for you. If you can spare the extra 1.123 seconds the note9 does everything else better. ?
Sent from my HUAWEI CLT-L29 using XDA Labs
IPhone x is better only at the first test, when the benchmark test is run by 4 times in a row to mimick gaming, it is on of the worst devices and gets hot while the note only loses like 4-5% of performance, note 8 lost 10% or so. Don't know where I read it but someone tested it out
Benchmarks isn't the end all be all. Basically if you want a phone that scores high benchmarks then the iPhone is for you.
I'm going to use the Note 9 for the features that it has. For the customization that I can do it. The multitasking/multiple apps I can have open.
I have iDevices, you can do some multitasking, but ios doesn't compare to Android for my needs.
I will leave this here.
Speed tests are irrelevant now. Most phones these days, even budget android phones, are way faster than they have been ever before. You get what you are paying for and millisecond differences in App opening doesn't mean anything at all in real world usage. But functionality, features, and style on the other hand, is what sets Samsung phones apart from apple.
AnTuTu makes the iPhoneX look like a joke next to the Note9. Geek Bench is one of the ONLY ones that the iPhone X wins on.

Samsung really messed things up with the Exynos 9810 chipset. In an effort to match iPhone's Single Core speed they ended up with a processor that runs hot and abnormally high battery drain. Hopefully the new water-carbon cooling system will overcome these deficiencies. You're lucky to have ended up with the Snapdragon variant, it eclipses the Exynos and iPhone A11 in a majority of benchmark tests.
Only the uneducated will get their panties in a twist with these tests that are rather stupid. Yeah, you might be comparing one phone to another by using one score type, but how you get to the score is different for each phone. Almost ALL benchmark tests run different algorithms between iPhones and Androids. It is actually not possible to statistically compare them together. It sure makes for a great headline grabber though.
I always go bouncing between Apple and Samsung phones(mostly Note series). Not because I can't choose one over the other, but because I just like phones in general and I'm a tech geek.
These tests are stupid, because Apple said it themselves...it's not speed that makes a great phone, it's how you use it. And to me, the complete experience that Samsung has brought to me personally, in the form of the Note series, simply can't be matched by Apple right now! Geekbench scores can show an iPhone scoring 5 times as high as my Note 9, and I would still by my Note 9 because of my user experience.
People get so caught up with the useless numbers.

I used to own an iphone 8 plus. Mobile phones are built to be useful for life of a person. Okay, iphone a11 chip is a beast but what can you do EXCLUSIVELY, NOT AVAIBLE FOR OTHER ANDROID PHONES in iphone? NOTHING.
But i can do these on my NOTE 9:
1) Take notes easily, draw for fun without any lag and sharing is smooth. No crushes..
2) Access every every details of settings. I can easily disable GPS with one tap.
3) Google services are naturally more integrigated.
4) I can see all the details of my photos. I can shoot raw, i can shoot manually.
5) Thanks to edge screen, my favourite apps are one tap away.
6) Charging is way faster, charging cable and adapter is included.
7) AKG and ICONX earbuds came for free with Note 9 pre-sale.
8) VPN connection is faster. Doesnt drop. I can see diagnosis of inbound speed.
9) 128 gb + Samsung cloud (15gb) + Dropbox + Google Drive. Cloud services are all integrated.
10) 960 fps mode, ultra ultra slow.
11) Take selfies with the cool s-pen.
12) Translate words with the cool s-pen.
13) I know that SAMSUNG will not slow my phone without warning.
etc etc...
Believe me or not, i used both iphone and note 9, i feel EXACTLY NO DIFFERENT in terms of speed. They are both fast. Benchmarks are no important for me. I chose the free life with no worries. I am in love with Note 9.
Another reason is because Geekbench algorithm for iPhone uses Vulcan whereas it hasn't been updated for Android phones that use the Vulcan graphic processing.

Initial Impressions Thread

Since I'm now waiting until September 5th or so for my phone, I want to live vicariously through you all who are slowly getting your phones!
Post your initial impressions here!
What do you think of the phone? Anything surprise you? Note8 owners, any noticeable improvements/changes? Is it smooth and amazingly fast? How's the new fingerprint scanner location? What's the AnTuTu score in the 512/8?
Anything Note9 related is appreciated to whet my appetite until mine comes in! ?
So... What's everyone thinking? I know a bunch of you got your phones today! Is it gorgeous? Is it buttery smooth? Etc.
I helped a friend set up their Unlocked 512 GB/ 8 GB RAM model today, I'm still waiting on mine. First impression, the blue is really great looking. In some lights it's midnight blue, and in others it looks silvery blue. The yellow S-Pen is a bit cheesy looking, but not a deal breaker. The phone feels sturdy, just like the Note 8. The slight height reduction combined with the slightly greater width make the phone feel more balanced than the Note 8. Speed wise, the Note 9 boots up very quickly compared the Note 8. There was no lag when navigating menus, and the phone only froze once for a few seconds in the 2 hours I used it, which could likely be attributed to the backup restore in progress. Samsung definitely has achieved "buttery smooth" performance and it feels a bit faster than the Note 8. The speakers are very loud and clear and in my opinion are the biggest improvement over the Note 8. It's too soon to tell battery performance. We had a Note 8 and S8+ next to the Note 9 to compare, and the Note 9 had 1-2 bars of better reception than the others. I'm not sure if this is due to calibration or the Note 9 just has stellar reception. Either way, I was impressed.
Final thoughts: After using a Note 8 for a year, my biggest gripes have been the terrible speaker, the awkward height to width ratio, the mediocre battery life at times, and the occasional app stability issues. From what I can see, the Note 9 fixes all of those issues and should be a great upgrade. I'd say if upgrading from the Note 8, getting the 8 GB RAM version would be the only one worth upgrading to considering the price and how great the Note 8 is already.

Drool.
That is what I'm doing. Note8 to Note9 512. I am with you with those gripes of the otherwise fantastic Note8. Also, I'd add fingerprint scanner to that list of gripes. Glad they fixed that too!
Thanks for the detailed review! I can't wait to get mine in a couple weeks! It will be worth the wait I'm sure.
I received my 128gb version on the 22nd and it's a nice incremental upgrade from the Note 8. Unfortunately we've gotten to the point where the wow factor isn't there anymore in phone designs.
The larger battery, S Pen remote and stereo speakers are nice but if I wasn't on T-mobile and wanted to take advantage of their low band spectrum and I didn't get a $500 credit for my old Note 5 I wouldn't have upgraded from the Note 8.
Coming from an unlocked Note 8 on AT&T to the Ocean Blue unlocked 512gb Note 9, I am very VERY happy! Some will say the cost is bad, i get 300 off for trading in the old S7E so for me it was 1000 out the door from Samsung directly. I am a note fan, and have notes since the Note 2.(S7E was due to the recall on the note 7 twice).so I am a bit biased towards the note to begin with. With that said , speakers , the storage the ram the color were major deciding factors. I can't believe how fast and smooth it has ran for 3 days now. Even set up day was awesome, downloading hundreds of apps and still able to use the phone with very little slow downs was awesome. I am also lucky not to have light bleed , crooked cameras or bad white balance . This fixes all the little , minute problems with the note 8 and then just kills with great performance. Just waiting for Samsung's 512gb microSD to complete the package.

Coming from the S9+ 9650 SD model, all I can says is FRAMES!
Had the Note 9 for 72hrs and it's dropping frames quite a lot. It's the Exynos model, 512gb UK edition. Love everything else about it, so will return and buy an SD version from Hong Kong.
Have to say, the S9+ I have is unbelievably fast and fluid, nothing like any other Sammy I've owned. So impressed, I honestly cannot think of one moment of lag or frame drop, so I'm hoping it's processor related and going SD for Note 9 will give me the same experience.

That's backed up by data too. Exynos processor really sucks in this phone, sadly. Way worse scores on benchmarks and looks like real life performance matches it.
I'm very impressed, came from a pixel 2 xl and off gate noticed a huge difference in quality, the pixel feels cheap and hollow the note is solid and has substance. No point in comparing the screens as that is well documented. Speakers are light years better on the note. I thought I missed stock Android after a stint of going through note 4 and 5 then S7 edge, and came back for the Note 9 and I must say stock Android is not really all the exciting and leaves alot to be desired. All in all this was well worth it.

I agree. The Pixel is amazingly smooth and takes phenomenal pictures. But it's just sort of... Boring. Especially by comparison. The Samsung features are actually very useful. I was a huge AOSP ROM guy back in the day because Samsung had such a crappy UI. It's gotten so much better, and the hardware is good enough to run it smoothly.
Really enjoying mine. Liking using the S-Pen more than I remember previously (last Note was the Note 5)
In it's first big test, the battery wasn't great, but I was using it a lot for photos and 4K video. Screen only came to just under 600 lumens which surprised me. Speakers sounds great, but I'd hoped for a little louder.

Yeah, I've read of frame drops, lag, and the AnTuTu score is like 40000 less, which is pretty significant!
Hmm dunno wether to wait give it a go. Then if not happy send it back. Not even sure Samsung will let me do that. Or just cancel my order. As it's nearly been a week and no movement. But then to be honest not sure which other phone to look at and wanting dual SIM. Hmm..

I'm returning my Exynos 512gb. As I said in a previous post, my SD S9+ is by far the most smooth Sammy I've used. My primary reason for getting it was battery life. I purchased the Exynos UK version at launch and the battery was awful, so returned it. Then read the Anandtech feature and understood why, so took a punt on the SD version and couldn't be happier.
Call me cynical, i can't help but think that this new wonder cooling system is for the benefit of the Exynos models, allowing Samsung to get performance on par with the SD845, which in my experience it hasn't.

exynos version is just as fast as the snap 845. synthetic benchmarks like antutu tend to score the 845 higher as the graphics card on the 845 is better. Single and miulti core cpu tests average out the same and in some cases better on the ex.

Difference Between Snapdragon and Exynos on the Galaxy Note 9

I used my wife's Note 9 (Snapdragon - ATT ) and ran ANTUTU Benchmarks for grins and giggles and the phone got a score of about 284,000 - very respectable.
When I received my N960F - a Note 9 from Clove in the UK, I ran the same Benchmark from ANTUTU and the best score I could get was 236,000 - a HUGE difference.
I really expected more parity between those phones and wonder why there is such a big difference? Is the Exynos Process that far behond Snapdragon's latest?
(I know these benchmarks don't mean much - but just the same, after spending nearly a grand on this phone, I would have expected better)
Any thoughts?

great question but I haven't used either long enough to really get a sense for it - On first blush, battery seems similar on both - I can easliy get thru an entire day without charging - though I find myself automatically placing my phone in my wireless charger from time to time because I have always had to - I think I can break myself of that habit though - will play around a bit more on both and see how they fair in a comparison of daily use....

Did Samsung work on the kernel sources to improve the Exynos 9810's efficiency and performance to be on par with Snapdragon 845 ?
The answer is "NO".
Looks like the the tides have turned recently in favor of the snapdragon chipset.

Could the Exynos 9810 be better in the s9/s9+/Note 9? - Probably to an extent working on the kernel but would still be behind the SD.

Snapdragon Note 9 : Will Allow you to Play FASTER Gamecube/Wii/PSP Emulation. But Will not allow you to install custom roms or root your device.
Exynos Note : Will not play gamecube/Wii Games Smoothly but will allow you to install custom rom.
Personally if I didn't want Wii/Gamecube emulation, I would have easily bought exynos.
Ok in synthetic benchmarks such as antutu the 845 gets a higher score because of the better graphics processor. When it comes to the cpu side of things the 9810 is at least as good and sometimes better.

dolphin emulation on both chipsets recently took a massive jump forward. exynos included.
you can root on international snapdragon variants of the Note 9. I believe China has unlocked snapdragon. I've heard chit chat mentioning Canada as well, fact check these yourself tho.

Ok in synthetic benchmarks such as antutu the 845 gets a higher score because of the better graphics processor. When it comes to the cpu side of things the 9810 is at least as good and sometimes better.

Aha, but then the real world performance of the sd is far better than the exynos + it's more efficient leading to a lot better battery life + the modem is better. Then you throw in a GPU that is literally another class in a phone that potentially will be used also for gaming and this year a lot of heavy games were released with vastly different experience on the two variants (last year samsung got a free pass on their lossy g71 mp20 as no heavy games released, not the case this year and it's shaping more to release frequently in the future).
g72 mp18 can't even come close to the PREVIOUS year sd 835 in real world gaming. sd 845 benefits heavily from the note 9 cooling as it had some thermal restrictions and sustain performance was close to the sd 835 one (still far better than g72 mp18 sustain for both snapdragons), while the mali GPU doesn't benefit that much from the new cooling, the GPU is just slow.
In Europe we actually pay more for that phone, 1000 euros are not equal to 1000 us dollars, all that while we get a SOC that is between midrange and highend instead of the highend one that is for the US market. Previous years the exynos was better (galaxy s7 for example), but the difference between the two variants were never that big as this year.
Edit: check the other real world benchmarks like pcmark, browser benchmarks and so on - the sd variant wipes the floor with the exynos. Still, benches are not all, sadly the real world difference is also there and noticeable.
Again if you look at the geek bench scores for cpu (android central, did a comparison) the cpu side of the exynos 9810 outperformed the 845. I would agree when factoring in the 845 graphics the overall score of the 845 is better. Again you would be VERY hard pressed to notice the difference in the real world. And there is zero lag on either of these variants I found.
I know people in the industry and alot of the perceived difference is due to the scheduler for the 9810 not being as optimised as for the 845. Rule on the street is that Sammy will redress this soon with an update.
Also the woolfson DAC on the exynos provides a better quality audio experience and fuller sound stage than that of the aqstic DAC on the 845.
Again the difference is slim. I've noticed zero lag even on fortnite.
Reast assured both chips ate brutes. After all both the 845 and 9810 are currently fabricated/manufactured by samsung.

It's a lot more complicated than a simple scheduler and if it was going to be fixed, it was going to be fixed for the note 9 launch as it's a good few months from the s9/s9+ release with the same SOC (that is a lot in the fast moving forward mobile industry). Most likely they won't do any improvements even in future major android releases. Geekbench score is peak performance on burst load tasks, it's not counting task migrations, frequency scaling, cores hotpluging and so on. There are good articles for the 9810 in anandtech, how it can be improved, why it can not be improved beyond given point, but they are kinda techy and not easy to read if you are not into it.
tl:dr The CPU cores are great, but has some flaws and everything around them is sh*t (sorry for my language, but yeah). The DAC is great tho, this is totally true.
For the GPU part there are a lot of materials about adreno 630 vs g72 mp18 with actual stats like max fps, min fps, FPS stability and so on. Fortnite will run ok, but on the sd845 it can run maxed out fluently (for the most part). Also when one spend 1000 euro, he should think about future proving and gaming is moving fast forward this year. If you game on your phone, it's kinda a bummer to settle for lower GFX settings on one of the most expensive phones this year, if you want smooth experience.
Not saying the exynos is super bad, it's not, but it's not on par with the sd845.
Again you would be hard pressed to notice the difference. Both variants are perfectly fine so everyone buy either with confidence.
It's not true, marvel strike force is unplayable on exynos version
9810 user here and i have to limit the exynos speed for it to get to a day. This sucks. I paid usd1000 but need to turn pn battery saver every morning
No rows written here reflect the reality. Just snapdragon users happy with their chipset. Another report on the S9 test that is outdated. The smallest SOT with exynos is 7h with only mobile data. Who does not know how to use an android or uses it as a playstation is his job. For a normal user it's great.

I don't even have to do that with my Note 8. You can likely squeeze more out of it, but a lot depends on usage patterns of course.
