[Q] GPS Nexus 6 Carrier App Store - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone else noticed (with the Google Play Store Nexus 6) once you place the sim in, (ATT for me) the apps section inside the play store (top left on the play store home screen) now has a "top ATT picks" or something of the sorts?
When I installed my sim it was prompted to download the att apps but I stopped that from happening, Non of the ATT-Navigate apps or of the likes made it to my phone. Just wondering if T-Mobile people are noticing a similar branding inside the apps section (Just check with a co-worker who is on t-mobile and His says "T-Mobile hot picks") I have been off-contract for a while and I am grandfathered in to the unlimited data (which means no tethering until I edit the props file).
Anyone else noticing similar "deep" brandings based on your carrier? Even if there is non of that crapware on there?

The only thing I've noticed on T-Mobile is the T-Mobile top picks in the Play Store which I've only noticed once. Other than that, nothing.

If you go in the Play Store and hit "Apps" do you still see the T-Mobile top picks? I never saw any of this on my nexus 5, seems kinda of pointless to buy the nexus 6 from GPS since it still adds some of this branding (even if you avoid installing the apps)

I see it, they used to do this in the old Play Store back when it was called Android Market. I personally don't mind, its not intrusive or annoying.

For me it feels that ATT is able to influence items in the app store (aka block certain apps like they used to with google wallet) I hope that is not that case but I don't know how ATT gets a listing on there (which btw replaced the "Editor's choice" apps for me which I liked)

Its been that way for a while .....look at some of the tethering apps it will say this app is not available on your carrier. ...it's that way with sprint

Eff at&t. I'm disappointed how Google's become carriers toy. Not as bad as Samsung but still I was expecting more from Google

This was not the case with a nexus device. When Google wallet came out, att + verzion + etc created isis/softcard/etc and banned google wallet from showing up in the app store (this is pre play services era) but if you had a nexus phone (in my case a gsm GPS galaxy nexus) you did not have this issue. My fear is that google allowing carriers to put "top picks" seems like it could be a slippery slope back to those days (Imagine if they banned all NFC payment apps except softcard).
Anyone else able to chime in on this observation? anyone not have that show up?

This from my GPS nexus with at&t sim

Note 3 with sprint

And here's the corresponding T-Mobile bit...

I mean it's there but I've only noticed once. I don't really care to be honest. I'm sure if it bothers you that much there will be a fix sometime soon. Maybe not though.

Just was curious if anyone else had seen this with other nexus devices. Good to know this is the norm not the exception.

I was also curious on how to remove tmobile top picks from play store. Tmobile stuff comes up on YouTube as well. Any ideas?

I bought from the play store. Used with Sprint till a few months ago. Have been using on T mobile for a few months now, and noticed the T-mo top picks for the past 3-4 days

I don't think this has anything to do with the phone but how the play store is set up, I would assume Google allowed the carriers this.

If you really want to remove this message, you'll have to instal Market Unlocker. With Market Unlocker you can set the play store to a non-carrier variant.

I knew Big Red would find a way eventually, didn't think it would have been this soon.
For now it is only those on 3G with 3G phones but everyone else will soon follow. Sprint is looking good about now.
Quite sad of what Big Red is doing. Looks like ATT is my next best choice for coverage since T-Mobile still has 2G in my area and Sprint has 3G and ATT has 4G also.
This makes the news yesterday about Google possibly selling unlocked "Nexus" devices in the Play Store all the more interesting. Then pick your carrier. I see a possible loophole if by some miracle there are CDMA/LTE Nexus devices I will never have to re-up my contract. That looks how to be only way to keep unlimited at this point is never renewing or upgrading phone through Verizon once they have this bullsh*t program in full swing.

Sadly, They only sell GSM phones for now which needs to change. But, they said in the post that everybody will eventually be forced into a "shared" plan that even not upgrading they'll still put you into one from my understanding unless I missed something.

Damn.. just looked at the Play Store and didn't know they would have that up so fast. BUT the good news is they are going to have Nexus phones and tablets about 5 different NEW devices and not just Motorola so I will have to keep an eye out. My contract isn't over with til 2013 anyways. Hoping by then for a 4.3-4.5" Motorola Droid 5 or variant with full QWERTY which is my dream phone right now. I cannot go to a 4.0" phone after 4.3" but I miss the physical QWERTY of my D1.

Mine isn't over till Summer of 2013 but I was planning on stealing one of my family members upgrade plans since they have one this coming November which is exactly the time when the new Nexus phones come out but I'll have to see if me and my family stick around with Verizon until then. Also, the Droid 4 has a physical qwerty keyboard which I'm not sure how people can use a physical keyboard (I had a physical keyboard before this phone) and I've messed around on the physical keyboard and It feels so weird to even type on it when I use to be able to type paragraphs in seconds on that phone without even looking at the keyboard.

If I lose my unlimited, I'm going to leave Verizon and go to some bootleg company like Boost. I hate Sprint so will never go back to them.
I pay what I pay for the 3 lines that I have because I like ny unlimited. I lose that...how about it don't be worth the money anymore. I'd rather pay $50 a phone with boost or cricket or metropcs.

Interesting article
Thanks for the article; it will be interesting to see if Verizon does indeed follow through with eliminating the grandfathering of unlimited data plan. This is one of the features my wife and I both love.
I went to Verizon yesterday and the guy said he's heard about it but he's never gotten any official thing that he said if it is implemented it'll be at the end of the year or somewhere around there.
This whole thing is weird to me...
We have US Cellular out here, and if they can get a few more phone options I may just go with them. Everyone I talk to says they are a breeze to deal with and the network is good enough to work with.

[Q] Will stock Google Play Edition support Google Wallet for T-mobile prepaid plans?

If anyone has this exact setup I'd love to know. I'm searching around and seeing it doesn't work for some of the carrier versions or when rooted, but I'm wondering about the stock setup straight from google running on t-mobile prepaid specifically. I want to switch from N4 but don't want to loose the awesome setup with google wallet, I use it all the time. Thanks for any help.

T-Mobile Uncarrier 7.0 Wifi Calling

T-Mobile just announced that everyphone they sell from here on will be wifi-calling capable.
From this I assume it will probably an apps, or something that is cooked into the ROM that can be easily ported? I think they are still selling the Nexus 5 too. So maybe we will be blessed with wifi calling soon. Any thought on this? Am I too optimistic?
I am a former G2 user, and I seriously miss wifi calling.

its part of the framework, not just an app. but, install the new hangouts and new hangouts dialer, then make phonecalls via data(wifi if need be).
Had the same thoughts, my wife bought an N5 through Tmo when we switched. How does the N5 get VoLTE.
As it was mentioned above, will the new Hangouts essentially enable VoLTE. Interesting that the new APK is rolling out now same day as Tmo makes this announcement.
Or, will we have to want for Android L?
I called t-mobile about this and they confirmed the Nexus 5 was supported. They said to connect to my wifi network and I should see a new icon indicating calls are being routed over wifi. I tried this, and saw no new icon. They said to try restarting the phone and connect to wifi again. Tried this, and still no new icon. Not so sure the N5 will be supporting this feature after all. Hoping it will be. I like the new hangouts dialer, but it still uses my google voice number and not my phone number which is a pain for people whom I didnt give the google voice number to in advance.
i wish the would just open source the shiz already so that we can add it ourselves. In a perfect world i suppose.....

I read on the news that T Mobile phones are getting OTA today. The most favorable scenario thus will be an OTA for N5 with wifi-calling soon. The worst case.. oh well, with like 20 phones that has wifi-calling baked in, there must be a feasible way to scoop that baby out, right?

Question is it possible to port your tmobile number to GV & it'll show up using your main number while making calls via hangout dialer instead of using a Gv number?

no nexus 5 will ever get a tmo ota.
Maybe a software tweak could enable the feature.

This could really help the 100 min voice prepaid $30/mo plan.
I use
I use gv phone (playstore). Works great. That is all.
So, no wifi calling for N5 (yet?). Ah well, freedom has a price, I guess.
Also, guys, I believe at this point people already know there are alternatives to wificalling. Do they work? Yes. Are they satisfactory for everyone? Doubt it. Edit: Even if they are, the more choices everyone has, the better it is.

The N5 will probably never get wifi calling. Why? because our updates come straight from google, tmo doesnt touch them at all. Sorry to rain on your parade people, but it just isnt happening.
Though as a consolation i have gotten a hold of the voip update to hangouts, and it works like a charm. My 100 min a month plan has just became unlimited

Sad—they shouldn’t limit this to crippled phones. If the iPhone can do this, which gets updates from Apple, a Google Nexus should be able to do this as well.

nexus can do it, without issue. just need to use an app for it. and there are other apps available for it. and now you can do it using your gvoice number, providing you update your hangouts and install the hangouts dialer.

Yes, T-Mobile & Play Store Nexus 6 phones are the same!

There must be a lot of people who don't know about Nexus Phones. All Nexus 6 phones are exactly the same no matter what carrier you decide to go through. Nexus phones do not have bloatware. There is a Nexus 6 for the U.S. and a Nexus 6 for the rest of the world. Both are the same except for different bands. I just wanted to set the record straight since I keep seeing posts asking what the differences are from carrier to carrier.
I had a Google employee say that it would have some carrier apps and receive updates from T-Mobile. Was this the case for the N5? Who updates that one?

Nexus 6 on Verizon - what works and what doesn't

Thus far, I think we've learned that dropping in a Nano SIM from an active line works perfectly.
What else is working? What is not working?
Is Google Voice working?

I got mine from Moto and everything works as fine as any other phone I've ever purchased directly from Verizon. It was as simple as inserting the nano SIM from my old Moto X and I was good-to-go.
I use Google Voice for VM and have had no issues.
I don't pay for the hotspot feature, so that doesn't work until I have root.
Yes, My Verizon shows NON-VZW DEVICE, but it works flawlessly. FWIW Google Play also initially showed "No carrier Nexus 6", but now it says "Verizon Wireless Nexus 6".
I think everything works as far as I know. Tempted to buy from tmobile but don't want Verizon to whitelist or black list or whatever.. I already have a nano sim from the m8 and adapter for,my g3.
But tmobile. Has to activate it first.. I wonder if that would cause any issues?

I think the whole issue with Verizon is really overblown and there shouldn't be any concerns. There are only two variants of the phone, one for US and one for international. Verizon and Moto/Google have obviously come to some agreement to allow the US version to use their network without any extra steps. I know it's hard for everyone to believe that there is a real Nexus on Verizon, but I'm here to tell you that it's here, and it works effortlessly and flawlessly. Verizon deserves some credit for this after the Galaxy Nexus debacle, but again....that was their own variant of the phone. Phones have changed to be less carrier-centric, and the carriers have had to adapt if they want to carry the popular phones.

I agree. The only caveat is if you don't have a nano SIM you have to either cut yours or order one from Verizon on the phone not in store. Then activate using your old phone.

What about the alleged carrier bloat that was supposed to be downloaded upon activation? Havent heard a word on this so I assume it aint true
Nothing came down on mine, but this could also be due to the fact that Verizon doesn't even have the N6 in their system so there may not be anything on there side setup to even push. This could possibly change down the line when Verizon actually starts carrying it.
