Play QHD Youtube videos on N6? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone figured out how to play youtube videos at a higher resolution than 1080p? If I open a youtube video that says its 4k, and tap on the settings gear in the app the highest option I get is 1080p. Any ideas?

I don't think the YouTube app has 4k capabilities yet

YouTube high quality question

I was wondering when I click hq on the YouTube app what res does it go to. Does it go to 480p or 720p
Thanks for Any help

Depends on the quality the video was uploaded to Youtube.
In all honesty though, the different quality content will only be able to be played in the native resolution of your device either upscaled or downscaled.
loool definately 480p ... u have a hard time getting 720p yt to play even with 3rd party apps
Ok cool

YouTube HD App?

Well, this is actually my first Android Phone, I've only used a Android Tablet before and my tablet had a YouTube App with an HD, not a HQ, function.
So my Question: Is there a YouTube HD App for android 2.3.5/6?
HQ kinda sucks on the note screen.
why use an app when you have a browser? just go on youtube.com, choose your video and choose the resolution for it there.

For some reason the newer version of the YouTube app does not offer the HQ option...so you will have to go back to the 2.1.6 version...
Find a jetvd apk, it's no longer in the android market, you can choose hd there and stream through your video player in hd (you can also use it to download youtube vids in hd) . HQ on the official app is only 480p no HD option so far. I also would be interested in hearing about any other apps that can stream HD youtube vids.

This is awesome, not a complete replacement for the youtube app but better than nothing and still a bit more comfortable than the browser
Jetvd gets to available options screen, I touch the thumbnail and nothing happens. I set a download folder and Im on wifi. So far jetvd sucks. J/k just cant get it to work.
Try Tubemate from the App Store. Dunno if its full HD but choosing the highest setting looks pretty cool on the Note, way better than the YouTube app. Being able to download vids is a nice bonus.

Guess I was referring to HQ. Tried I screenshot and the video didn't show for some reason. Shame because it was a good one

tubemate is good, it lets you download or stream in any resolution available for the video. I prefer to download the videos in 720p or 1080P and play back that way if I want to watch it again I keep it saving future bandwidth and it looks much better then HQ in the yt app which is probably only 480P.
You can view yt in browser in desktop mode and select resolution but going full screen generally is a pain and doesn't look as good as a 720P or higher download in tubemate. Best to get tubemate from the official site tubemate.net as there are dodgy versions around even been some bad infected ones on market apparently according to the aps developer.

Does the Nexus 7 play 720p or 1080p videos flawlessly?

Does the device play .mkv videos smoothly?
I'm thinking of getting the device for video playback, just want something which can play my collection of videos.
Beamed from Jupiter on my Galaxy Note II
1080p?No problem
hell yes i watched avengers full 1080... so smooth... these days I don't even use laptop for videos any more. Anything I want to watch I put it on my nexus
Nice!
All the more reason to get it!
MX Player with h/w acceleration plays 1080p videos flawlessly. Just finished Cloud Atlas 1080p and it was incredible.
I use bsplayer for playback. It's excellent

I have no problem with 1080p video playback. It's very smooth.

Plays my BD rips in MKV just fine, but I downsize them for the N7 because there's no appreciable difference in quality and a huge difference in file size.
I usually will use mp4 instead of mkv so my thumb drive will work in my Xbox360 as well. I haven't had any issues with it running from a thumb drive in 1080p
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
You can play 1080p but the N7's resolution only goes up to 720p
I dunno about mkv, but I've played 1080 mp4 with no issues. Used MX Player.
As long as you use the ffmpeg plugin for your video player... diceplayer, Mxplayer, the archos player... the nexus 7 will play all videos, even 1080p, with HWA using very little CPU. Usually staying in the LP core.

No problem with 1080 using H/W decoding but I loose audio sync with S/W decoding.
If its encoded in Hi10 then no, it will play in software mode and drop frames. This isn't the devices fault, the available media players and codecs just don't support it yet. otherwise it runs other encoded 720/1080p just fine and smoothly.
Seems I am only facing slow problem while playing such HD movies..its not flawless for me..I am using MX player..any suggestions ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I never bother with 1080p since the screen only displays up to 720p. I change all my mkv files into mp4 and play them inthe stock video player without issue though. Play perfectly smooth. Watch at least 2-3 movies a week. If i'm lazy though i have MXplayer installed for when i don't want to change it into an mp4 format. Sometimes need to use software decoding to play certain files well. But it always plays them no matter what without a problem!

Did you set the hardware decoder to HW+? I because with only HW you can have slow playback.
i would also like to state.
This is a 720p screen, and i have no issues playing 720p video. The screen will not display 1080p resolution, so 1080p video is worthless on the device.
They may work but they are down-scaled versions of 1080p, to 720p.
There is no purpose for 1080p video on this device. Also, the screen is too small to really notice the clarity of a 1080p resolution anyways at 7". 720p looks and plays wonderfully on this device!! 1080p video >.> if you have a codec, it will play at 720p. Dont waste yo space!!!

my youtube app only shows 720p max, really annoying, I tried the desktop method in chrome but it didn't appear to load, I kept getting loading error message when it played, when the video attempted to play it just froze my browser (chrome)
Found a better method if I want to see 4k video on my note 4 however more long winded, I downloaded tubemate app from amazon app store, this allowed me to download full 4k quality test videos and play them
You can upgrade your YouTube app and view 1440p. Search around for it.

I believe so, You will need to remove the old app to do so which require root.
This is really ticking me off. What's the use of a kickass screen if you can't feed it properly with content?
Fullhd doesn't work on the nexus 7 either
Check this 1080p 60 FPS video! This is waaaay better than 4k at 30 fps if you're not using a tripod. You get MUCH less blur when moving the phone.

Quite few are available. You may have to use video downloader extension for your browser. You can even find some 3D 360 videos.

You can download the mp4 file but the GVR doesn't seem to see it. Does it need that .pvr file?
You need to move file to oculus/360videos folder
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
I did. Videos still don't show up.
Use stock video player and try to play that video. If is playable then oculus player will play it too. If not then you need to reconvert it to mp4 with mp3 sound. Easy way to check: use stock file manager, go to oculus -> 360videos and if tumbnail of video in question is visible then video should play, if has basic icon then needs to be reconverted.

Yes, but will it play as a 360 video without the extra file? I do not believe so.

They will play. If you noticed in my screenshot there are some videos without matching pvr file. I believe pvr file is tumbnail for video. Videos without pvr will have blue square as tumbnail in 360 video but they will play once selected.

Thanks. That worked but I'm having the same problem as with all the 360 videos, the focus is terrible. Is that the nature of 360 videos or something else? The focus seems to be really awful compared to still images or even regular video. Perhaps because 3D video captures less information for each view than regular video?
You can find some sharper videos. A lot has to do with compression and file size. They never going to be completly sharp on our screens. Each eye receives information from less than half of phone screen and magnification itself will blur picture. It may change with 8k displays Higher resolution 360 videos may have dimensions around 4k x 2k pixels and quality is better.
