On stock 4.2.2 rooted and perfectly happy for now, last time i tried to flash recovery i bricked the phone and don't want to deal with that again if i can help it. Do i need to flash a custom recovery or can i get by with just stock for now?
What to do about OTA? Is root keeper an option and just accept the updates as they come?

You don't need a recovery unless you want to back up your rom or install other ones.
As for the OTA, people were reporting root stuck when installing 24A, as long as you have stock recovery it should install ok. Worst case is you need to root it again.
it all depends what you want to do bc i had my phone rooted without a custom recovery and it worked just fine using like xposed but if you want to flash a rom or do nandroids then you need a custom recovery. I also took an OTA like a dumbass and it gave me a boot loop with a certification error and it took me a month to fix it so a) plz don't take an OTA and b) get a custom recovery if you want to just be safe, i would if i were you.
Thnx, will try auto rec again last time. What to do after install? Last time it installed, it opened and that was it, couldn't get it to reboot, do l need to do a back up first? What are the steps immediately after install?

I was rooted and running CM6. I tried getting back to a stock 2.2 by flashing the stock image from Rom Manager. I downloaded the 2.2 update from google and it wouldn't update. In the system menu or bootloader I got a little format happy with boot/system and so on. Anyway, doing a nandroid now. Is there anyway to get this phone back to the kernel it shipped with?
You have to flash it with the stock recovery.
I've been using that Universal androot.http://www.androidappjudge.com/2010/08/one-click-root-application-universal_10.html I tried flashing stock 2.2 and I didn't read the two options, I just clicked them and kept going not realizing that I flashed the rooted, superuser version. Does this mean that I'm now rooted forever? When I try flashing stock 2.2 with rom manager It stops @ the android and /!\ symbol. Now it's even doing this with CM.
I'm now wondering how to get rid of whatever crap might be floating around on my phone and why it may not be flashing anymore?
there is nothing wrong, rooting allows you the ability to have super administrative rights. Since all you have done is grant yourself admin rights, the recovery should be the same.
Something is wrong. I can't Fix Permissions or flash anything.
Man, I should have just left it alone.

Did you wipe? I used 1-click root and I hadn't flashed anything in over a year so I forgot to wipe and I boot looped until I pulled the battery, booted into recovery and wiped. Simple solution but it could be worth mentioning...
So you are saying that, you have the stock recovery now? Triangle with little android? If so, Just download a PASSIMG.zip and flash through bootloader. This will take you to stock.
I have an N1 with locked bootloader and when I wanted to go back to stock(Forgot to get a nandroid of unroot rom). I had to flash a stock recovery. then downloaded the PASSIMG.zip from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717870&highlight=frf91+downgrade
This takes me back to ERE76. Then I download an OTA of FRF85B.
I think fix permissions fixed everything. Thanks for the tips!
THIS HELPED TOO:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=619153
A couple of months ago I rooted my N1 FRF91 with Universal Androot. Later I flashed psfMod (based on CMW) custom recovery using flash_image recovery.
Now I don't have any use for custom recovery or a rooted device anymore, and want to get back on track to be prepared OTA 2.3.
I have received notifications for 2.2.1 OTA (2-part update), but the device just locks up during the upgrade and gets back to rooted 2.2 after a reboot.
So how do I apply the 2.2.1 update? Could I just flash the original recovery with flash_image (and what file should I get in that case), unroot with androot and just use the OTA? Or is there any better/easier way?
The question feels kinda nooby, but the only guides I find is to get back to shipping conditions (Which I don't want to keep my settings and so on),using fastboot which I can't since my bootloader still is locked or assumed that you are using a custom ROM which I don't.
Thanks for your help!
There is no need to get rid of a custom recovery or root to apply those updates. This has been covered in many threads.
This is what I would do. Use flash_image to flash Amon_RA 1.9.0 recovery. Then download the update (make sure you download the correct one: there is one that is FRG83D from FRF91, which is what you will need if you are running FRF91)and save it to the root of your sdcard. Then boot into recovery, and flash the update. (You will lose root and your custom recovery, but just root again if you want.) That covers part 2 of 2 of the update.
If you want to flash the first part, dowload the HBOOT 0.35 update file (floating around the forums) and place it in the root of your sdcard. Boot into recovery and flash that. You may have problems flashing certain custom recoveries after you flash the 0.35 HBOOT.
Thanks for your reply. If I follow your steps, the 2.3 OTA will work when it eventually comes?

If you keep a custom recovery, you will still get the notification, but you will have to manually apply it. If you keep the stock recovery, it should be able to apply it automatically. No word yet on if the newer HBOOT is a requirement for 2.3 or not.
I have twrp installed, I had cmw and a nandroid backup of 4.2.2
Restored it to the nandroid. Phone asks for install, reboot and it boots to recovery.
Is there a way to get ota without it kicking into cmw.
I tried twrp as well and it just reboots into that.
I dont want it to show.
Im trying to sell the phone and it will not go back to stock. So this is my only option.
I have a hboot 1.54, i do not have s off, but i have an unlocked bootloader and i have root.

I'm currently in the same boat as yourself. To make use of OTA updates your phone needs to be:
1. Running a stock unrooted ROM
2. Running the stock bootloader
Seeing as you don't have S-OFF your only option will most likely be using a RUU if you can find one for your carrier. If not you might be lucky with a stock Nandroid but older backups won't work as the older touchscreen drivers aren't compatible sadly.
Tbh custom ROMs will be updated a lot faster than pretty much any stock ROM. If you need to return to stock for whatever reason your best bet would be to wait for a leaked RUU or a new Hboot exploit I think.
Edit: If you need the device to be on the latest stock ROM for selling you could try and find the latest stock ROM for your device/carrier and just flash that with TWRP. But TWRP will always be on the device until you can do one of the things I said above.

Stock recovery is required for ota to work
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
No need for RUUs! After flashing your nandroid, fastboot flash stockRecovery.img. Check mike1986's stock Sense ROM for a link to the stock recovery if you don't have it in your nandroid. Now you should be able to apply the OTA. Then flash CWM/TWRP and your custom ROM back.
Thanks i found a stock recovery flashed that and the ota updates are working now. Im selling the phone and going back to the iphone (let the bashing commense).
Not gonna install twrp again, leaving it as is so who ever buys it can do all that later if they wish or enjoy all stock goodness
So, I rooted my developer edition M7 and then reflashed the stock recovery so that I could install the OTA 4.3 update. Everything went fine until the update started installing. Now it's been installing for the past hour with no progress in the progress bar.
Can anyone please help me? does it usually take an hour? Is there a way to stop the installation without bricking it?
Any advice is desperately needed!
Do you have the stock rom and stock kernel (boot.img)?
And your bootloader is relocked/locked?
Yes, i believe so. In my efforts to get rid of cwm recovery, I used the stock nandroid for the developer edition from this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2248997&page=5 though it didn't get rid of the cwm recovery so I flashed the stock recovery from ARHD.
Can I reboot the phone by holding down the power button and start over?

Also, my bootloader is currently unlocked.
Well, I broke down and did a hard reset of the phone. It froze once more during the installation process, but ultimately concluded. However, it did not update to 4.3, but instead stayed with 4.1.2. I guess I'm just grateful that the phone is still working.
Anyway, i'll just have to research more.
@ThickG
You have to flash the stock recovery of 1.29.1540.3 version for get the ota and install it
So, i will search it for you!

That's awesome man,, thank you!
ok so basically i rooted my phone some time ago and it went kinda fine, after some time i realized i didn't really need it and i unrooted it just now with superSU, when doing so, superSU asked me if i wanted to return to the stock ROM, and i said yes, since i had an update to do, and you can't do those via OTA with a custom rom i think, anyways i said yes and unrooted my phone, the i proceded to delete lucky patcher, twrp, and everything root related, even after all this, after downloading the update my phone gets stuck in a bootloop and i have to press power+volumeup+volumedown to go into recovery mode (i think that's recovery mode?) and here it starts the update, after 5%, it says it failed and i have to reboot, how do i even check if i have my stock rom back?

Because you have not flashed the stock boot. Use dload method to boot to stock rom now. You may flash the same build number or the one with ota.
