http://blog.quarkslab.com/abusing-s...on-story-of-a-half-patched-vulnerability.html
A vulnerability exists in the KNOX security component of the Samsung Galaxy firmware that allows a remote webpage to install an APK with arbitrary permissions by abusing the 'smdm://' protocol handler registered by the KNOX component. The vulnerability has been confirmed in the Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, and Ace 4.

I'm not a dev but my limited understanding tells me the good fellows on reddit have jumped the shark a bit.
I cant see how this will allow rooting without tripping knox.
Plus it will be patched very soon, especially since it started circulating the internet.

What does "Jumped the shark" mean? Well, it's a point of attack. This alone obviously doesn't let you gain elevated access but it could possibly be a foot in the door.

You're confusing big Android updates with small patches that come through updates. There's already a minor update for the Note 4 rolling out in some European countries, so if I were you, I'd laugh a tad more quietly...

This made me giggle. I think he really meant "jumped the gun" as in the reddit users took off with the idea too quickly, and assumed that the vulnerability could be useful for rooting.
"Jumping the shark" is a reference to the TV show Happy Days - which many people think consider to have gone on too long, series after series - losing a lot of it's humour and appeal. The episode from which the phrase comes involved the Fonz (the main character) jumping over a shark on his motorbike. It was awful... and hence the phrase "jumping the shark" became synonymous with something getting old and tired and no longer funny.
Sorry, I just had to interrupt the thread with that little factile. Carry on.

very sad to see so many people talking s**t about the note 4.
It might not be a huge difference from note 3 but is definitely a big upgrade from my note 2.
I think everyone expect to have extreme changes in the devices every year and that is not possible anymore.
I think now the upgrade should be every 2 years.

Someone told me that if you get the TMO version it won't have a locked bootloader, and can be usedon ATT. I'm not sure if this is true, but considering going that route.

Verizon :/ I really am getting tired of it from them tbh. I buy the phone, why should they lock the bootloader. (Yes, I know there are reasons, but still) they are not leasing the phone to me, You buy the device and use it on their network.I am paying for a service. That's just how I look at it.

I sure understand that thought. But I also understand the carriers not wanting to warranty phones that we hose trying to mess with them.
It's probably too much effort to position themselves to offer an unlock code for the bootloader, which would cost 'loss of warranty'. If they don't have to warranty them, then why should they care?

probably because so many people lie when they call for warranty service, saying they dont know why their phone suddenly "stopped" working..
Now, what could be done, is to sell an unlocked phone/boot loader, NO WARRANTY AT ALL, and see how many folks buy that model...
Not many I bet..

I want to root at some point but wondering if this security system update will make it more difficult. Most likley since it's a new update nobody might know. Maybe it's been rolling out for a few weeks and someone knows something. Thanks
Edit: I see it's a security patch that I think started rolling out in January or it's a new February one. I still wonder if it will make root more difficult
no, root is still easy. its always the same method

to answer your question a little better.. why is it easy to unlock the bootloader and root any nexus? its because google decided to give us a gift with the nexus one.. the gift, fastboot oem unlock. google has made any nexus easy to root, for no other reason except its much easier. do you think google will take it away from us? i dont, as thats part of the magic that makes a nexus. actually, they did it because of all the app developers AND modders/rom developrs, so they could use their nexus to make us apps and to improve the whole nexus experience(yes, on occassion google picks code written by our xda developers and adds it into nexus devices). so leaving it easy to root also gives google more coding options. yea, i really dont think googles gonna change that.

Thanks, yeah I was wondering if it would make it more difficult but knew they would never eliminate it. No point in updating if it's gonna even cause a small extra step but glad it was nothing. I just put on a different rom that took out most of the apps I don't need and says will have better battery life and that seems to be the case. Thanks again

Don't be so full of your self when you know all to well the average people that come on here. Yes, sorry - I mis-spoke - I did mean unlocked. In any case, for those of us who want to relieve ourselves of factory bloatware and have an unlocked and rooted phone, which model number would it be? There are variants all over the map.

What confuses me is that some indications suggest that rooting the Snapdragon variant will work, though opinions are all over the map, and not all of them are current. Since development is constantly in motion, it's hard to know for sure.
Here's the link to a guide for rooting with Magisk:

Here's a guide to flashing TWRP for Snapdragon S10 (which wouldn't be possible without root, I presume):

Am I just reading all of this wrong? I'm sure you can appreciate that with all this conflicting information and hundreds upon hundreds of pages across multiple threads, it's hard to know for sure.

Exynos models can be rooted. Only some snapdragon models can be rooted, but they aren't U.S. models. The U.S. model phones are locked down tight.

To be expected if you've been a Samsung user all along. I've been an HTC user across the Tilt, HD2, Inspire, One and 10. That covers about... what... fifteen years?
So, "well known" to some is not so much to others. Obviously you immerse yourself in this, follow it vigorously, and therefore have knowledge that others don't. I buy a phone every couple years for business and personal use. I unlock, root, perhaps install a custom ROM but not always, install the necessary apps (TiBu, AdAware, etc.) and I'm done with it. It's not a hobby to me.
That said, I've already sent the phone back. Safe to assume the G975F/DS is what I'd be in need of?

Bingo.

Nope, wrong on all accounts. I came to the S9 then S10 after years of owning and developing firmware for Motorola phones. It doesn't take a genius to read and do a little research before they sink almost a grand into a phone. It also only takes less than a minute to Google and find the answer you've been hashing about for days. It sure as hell doesn't take a genius to figure out how to Google or even search XDA for that matter. Hell, it's been mentioned here a 100 times. If it takes you this long to figure out if you can root, you probably don't want to try.
