Hey,
I live in Toronto, Canada, I went on the google website to buy the nexus one, and the price it gives me for the phone including shipping is $556 US dollars.
In the shipping policy section it says your respective province/country might charge you the taxes at the time of delivery. My question is will I get charged taxes at the time I pick up my package? I have ordered stuff online from the states before and I have not been charged tax for those items or any extra fees on top of what I payed at the time of purchase (I ordered 60 dollars worth of clothing before).
As a little experiment I changed my shipping address from Canada to my friends address in the states, and the price is identical. Is the 556 US dollars the FINAL price americans/canadians pay for the phone?
Thanks for all your help.
I paid 529.00 in total, so I think you might be getting pinged with the taxes up front?
It should have it broken down in the final checkout screen! But try here they have a contact number also so you can always give them a call to see, best of luck to you...

haha thats messed up, after experimenting with the states address, I no longer get charged for shipping but instead I get charged US dollar tax, lol and it comes out to be 10 dollars more, $566. I dont know how you got away without paying tax or any shipping. Lucky you
Now I dont know whether to risk getting it shipped to Canada for 556 and end up paying tax on it at the time of pick up. Or to ship it to the states and pay 10 dollars more for tax? Darn taxes.
Thanks for the quick reply eh.

Unfortunately we do have to pay the tax. I think I had to pay an additional $80 which sucked.

Oh DAMN, I guess I would save that 80 dollars by shipping it to the states right? I am planning on going to my friends place in 2 weeks.
Now one more confusion, when I select a states address for shipping, I get a choice between fedex ground, 2nd day air, and overnight. What doesnt make sense is that picking fedex 2nd day air charges 5 dollars extra, but picking fedex overnight or fedex ground doesnt charge any extra. Shouldnt fedex overnight charge the most for shipping?
Thanks for your help and your quick reply.
Yes, you will have to pay GST, a broker fee, and in your case PST to the courier before they will hand over the package to you. If you're looking for a way to escape the PST you might try and move to Alberta. We don't have any!

haha lucky Albertans , I hate this damn province (ontario) paying the highest PST from all of Canada, and we still get **** services.
But ya I guess to avoid paying extra fees of shipping AND taxes at the time of pick up, I'll get it shipped to the states and pick it up from my friends place in 2 weeks.

Be sure that you do NOT buy the "rogers compatible" one.
Get the one that is tmobile/wind -- it will still work on robbers, just be stuck to 2G, plus in addition, it will be compatible with wind and moblicity/dave.
With robbers data charges (being robbery) it is hard to justify data on their service anyways.
Or just phone up Fido and ask for the $30/month 6GB plan. I actually bargained them down to $20/month for the 6GB.
As for picking it up in the states, you can save money that way as long as you are willing to lie to border patrol and say you didn't buy anything.
I got charged almost 90 dollars by the delivery man for customs charges.....so add that to your total cost.
I live in SW Ontario btw....
Well if he is on Fido he should get the rogers compatible device unless he is planning on making the switch to Wind.
Is the 6GB plan back? was taken away months ago, its why i haven't left rogers, since I know I won't get it back.
And yes grabbing it from your friend is the best option.
Duplicate post. Sorry.
Yeah, the 6GB plan is back. But not advertised. They brought it back to offer people who want to go to Wind. If you are patient enough, or lucky enough to get the right person you can get the deal you want.

Depends on the state. You won't get charged by Google for tax in some states.
Thanks for the feedback everyone.
I guess I will go pick it up from the states
I shipped to Canada and the overall cost of my nexus was $650.
This simply must be a scam of some sort, right? Who could be selling touchpads on Ebay for $40 with free shipping?
Ebay item 280795551667
Sorry, too newbie to be allowed to post a link...
Yeah and for a 32GB model as well.

We'll see, I just bought 2. Covered under the Buyer protection and I can afford to lose $80 if it's a scam. I've bought from this buyer a few times and never had a problem. Thanks for the lead maybe?!?
I hope it is legit...you've actually bought from this character before, lloydcabraham? Electronics?
I ordered one, I've been scammed before on eBay, but since it has buyer protection if its a scam we will get full refund. Since about 130 people have bought so far we won't have too much trouble reporting the scam, if it comes to that. Hopefully it's not a scam.
Looks like 499 of them were sold over the course of a day or so...let's see if anyone actually gets one delivered...fingers crossed
They are coming from China I will be very surprised if you got the touchpad rather then some KIRF from china.
I would be surprised to even get a KIRF. I figured it was a "take the money and run" kind of things. Still, even if it is a KIRF, Ebay and Paypal would seem to offer some protection to the buyer...I hope...

Since the item description states that the brand is HP, then we would be protected by eBay and Paypal. But we would probably have to pay return shipping.

What if the buyer receives an empty box? How is paypal/ebay going to protect you from that? The seller obviously shipped something, they can say that the buyer is lying and that the product was in the box.

Not 500 of them. Plus you video tapenit and throw that theory out the window. Not to mention the shipping weight would be off. I would buy one and video tape the opening of the box.

I hope Leo is right...it does make sense that any seller could scam a buyer or two by sending the old "empty box"- but 499 empty boxes is difficult for Ebay and Paypal to ignore...
Or, perhaps, HP Touchpads will arrive...another Festivus miracle!
Scam
I'm afraid you all got scammed here, but probably Paypal will return your money. It's not that this seller is a fraud, but probably his account has been hacked. Maybe you all are very lucky, but normally nothing branded comes cheaper from China.
I live in China and recently bought my TP on the Chinese Ebay clone Taobao.com, I payed 250 USD for the 16G version..
Funny thing is it was originally send from Shanghai (I can see that on the package, HP Export zone Shanghai, not sure where it was produced in China) to a buyer in Memphis USA, which bought it for 99 USD I guess. From Memphis it was probably sold through Ebay to some guy in Shanghai, possibly for 200 USD or less. This guy sold it to me on Taobao for 250 USD, which is still a very decent price if I compare to other tablets on the market. What a world..

i received a tracking number the first day, but it hasnt been updated. Also the seller account has been closed. I will wait a couple of day to see if theres any activity on the tracking, then i will put up a claim with paypal.
Solved
So, Ebay gave me my money back asap; but today I received a little package that contained a chinese trinket (rather than 3 tablet computers). Three cheers to Ebay for getting it right immediately...

Did anyone else find it interesting that there is an extra $20 to the price in tax and shipping? Now maybe its just me but I feel if you spend more that $100 for a small item online shipping should be free. And $13 what is that google trying to recoup some of the profit margin. I could ship it myself for under 10 2 day from USPS and they probably get a discount for mass shipping. Dont get me wrong I still ordered it, Im just slightly frustrated with how they worked out the price.
tax is normal .
shipping 13 bucks, thats fine..

They aren't "hidden fees", they are tax and shipping... just as stated. Hidden fees are things like a $30 "upgrade" fee that is not obviously stated but will show up on your Verizon bill when you agree to a new 2 year contract for them. Tax and shipping are fees for the taxes that are obligatory and to cover the cost of packing and shipping the product. The Nexus 7 is being practically sold at cost as-is, so complaining about a small shipping fee is a bit uncalled for.
The fact that Amazon has gotten away with not charging tax for all of these years is mind-boggling, I guarantee has a lot to do with political lobbying and strong-arming. Don't get used to it, as they will soon (rightfully) have to charge tax and submit it to states. Google rightfully collecting and submitting sales tax is a sign that they are a company that tries to do the right thing, that's welcome in this day and age.
Nothing hidden about it...you get full disclosure of it and you don't have to buy if you think it's absurd.
Hidden may not be the best word. But I think they are pocketing some money from the shipping charge. There is no way it cost that much to send, to me its a crafty way to make the MSRP lower.
Mine was 94 cents tax (Kinda weird) and 13 dollars shipping.

They do two-day shipping. I can't quote all of the costs, but I will see that a flat-rate Priority Mail box from USPS costs $16.95 these days. Shipping isn't cheap, unless you are Amazon and can negotiate a deal based on the fact that you will be shipping 10s of thousands of products every day.

exactly. not unreasonable at all. i would gladly pay a little extra on shipping so my device isnt destroyed in transit.
When they are selling a device at pretty much cost price I think $20 on shipping and tax is more than fair enough..its better than the $200 profit apple wack on each ipad.
Stop complaining its a bloody good deal!
I would be fine with the extra shipping and taxes and stuff, but I've never seen Arizona tax anything I've bought anything online, yet because of the tax it took my $250 tablet plus $13.99 shipping and made it $280. That seems a little much for me, though I did buy the device.

That's because states don't collect sales tax, retailers do (are suppose to anyway), but only if they have a nexus (ha!) in the state.
I didn't have to pay sales tax on mine... just shipping and $13 isn't bad.

Canada (Ontario) pricing:
Nexus 7 (16GB) $259.00
Shipping: $19.99
Tax: $33.67
Total: $312.66
Mine was
Nexus 7 (16GB)
$249.00
Shipping (Two Day Shipping):
$13.99
Tax:
$18.41
Total:
$281.40
Shipping price seems fair and taxes are, well, taxes . . .
Some of that cost will be offset by the $25 credit for apps.
Seeing as the amount of money I save in shipping with amazon prime I think I can handle at most $30 in taxes and shipping

Gamestop
I pre-ordered at game-stop, just because of that.
Same deal, movie, book and 25 bucks, but I'll save a little bit on shipping.
I haven't been quite this excited about a tech product since I bought my skinny Mac in 1984. I was a bit disappointed in the extra fees, but it's hard to be upset about it. It's a way better deal than my puke green Mac was!
Paying $229.50 for the eight gigabyte joint. Texas has taxes.

I hear you man, I am ridiculously excited for this thing. I already have a 4.7" Android phone and an iPad 3 but knowing I have this thing coming brings an ear to ear grin to my face every time I think about it.
Does anyone know how soon Amazon.com normally sells newly released smartphones? I am planning on buying from bestbuy at full retail price after they price match my local sprint store's $549 price. It would be even better if I could buy from Amazon.com and avoid tax as well.
(first time buying without the subsidized pricing so I'm looking for the cheapest way possible)
Thanks

If I'm not mistaken Amazon charges tax on more states now included California. I was building a PC for about $1500 and was using Amazon to avoid Newegg tax but a week before ordering or so they enforced CA Sales tax. Overall it was still cheaper so I ended up still ordering with Amazon but it's worth checking if your state is the same.
Amazon has a list of states where they charge sales tax: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...2?ie=UTF8&nodeId=468512&qid=1366142889&sr=1-2
All CA mobile sales will also be charged tax on the full (no-contract) price of the phone as well, even when you buy the subsidized version and sign the 2-year contract.
I am shipping to Ohio. Amazon doesn't charge tax there yet

no taxH OR DE ...
I see they are up to their shenanigans again!
They assess sales tax at the FULL PRICE of the handset instead of the discounted price. This is not correct. Instead of paying sales tax on $829 I am paying sales tax (6%) on $1379!
The final charge hasn't hit my CC yet, but basesd on the initial receipt, they aren't charging me for the full price.
It's in the invoice from the original order. I used paypal and that's what they charge.
I just ordered a 512GB Ultra because I guess I'm a sucker for one, and TBH I'm interested in the buds pro. Which show Feb 19th shipping?! WTF is up there, the remorse period ends when those ship? What kind of crap is that?!
I guess I should have ordered earlier, shipping on everything else is Feb 5th.
It's like Christmas, every year it gets earlier (the ads, etc.).
I wonder if this year's Note will be coming in July. I remember when those came AFTER iphones LOL.
Ah, ok, you're getting the buds as a freebie? So I guess you're not in the US? Maybe different rules. My phone was 522.49 after $700 phone trade-in, and I had another $24.08 accessory charges after $200 credit. My tax rate here is 8.9% I'm not really sure where the $53.50 comes from... it's not correct for the after discounts number, nor is it correct for the pre-discounts number. But it's at least close to what it should be, not on the complete pre-discount number.
In USA (Maryland), and sales tax assessed on the full price of just the phone.
I'm getting $550 off that for trade in (S10e).
$200 credit buys buds pro and rugged carrying case with nothing left over.
Oh ok, I think they get free buds in Europe, so I thought maybe that was your case. We have similar deals then, but I have a bigger trade-in (S20U). The only accessory I wanted was the case with the S-pen, so I spent the rest on a tablet that I'll sell (which ended up putting me $24 over the allowance). The estimated tax on my invoice corresponds to a taxable amount of $601.12. I have no idea where that came from, but it's definitely not the full price of the phone.

I tried shipping a S21 Ultra G5 to my forwarding warehouse in Delaware (no taxes) and Samsung repeatedly flagged all subsequent orders as fraud when I tried to reorder - to *any* address, subsequently.
(India) agents would never disclose this - even though they *know* it is the fact - and I found this out when they sent me a copy of my online chat with them - where the Subject line was clearly flagged - stating "fraud" - which is ridiculous...
I have nothing really useful to add other than the fact that you're lucky you don't live in Canada.
Since the list price of the S21 Ultra is like $1200 USD, that's $1520 CAD, yet our list price is $1999. And tax here is 13%. The phone comes out to $2260, or just shy of $1800 USD lol.
Considering the S22 Ultra is only like $100 USD more than the S21 Ultra. They're probably just going to match the S20 Ultra price tag of $2300 CAD since that at launch was $1380 USD.
Even though you're over paying for tax on that preorder, you're not nearly getting as man handled as the Canadian market.
Cause if you look at the current list price of $1380 USD, that's almost $1800 CAD, yet our list price is going to be similar to the S20 Ultra at $2300. We're over paying by about $500 CAD or $400 USD.
I mean, it sucks over paying for tax, but, it could be a LOT worse lol
