Battery Life & Lollipop - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is starting to get me depressed. I am close to pulling the trigger on one, in spite of the general consensus that Battery Life is Mediocre+. I had great hopes on Google's assertion that battery life on Lollipop would be improved. Now, most of the posts/reports I see are that Battery Live on MotoX2 is LESS on Lollipop. Clouding my decision again! Is battery life on this phone & Lollipop going to be that terrible?

The bad battery on lollipop is from a buggy build. It will improve.

Go and check the battery life thread in the general Moto X 2014 subforum. There are plenty of Moto X owners getting 5-6 hours of SOT.
Lollipop is producing battery life bugs on Nexus devices as well. Lollipop is a huge change for Android and Google will need a few months more to resolve the issues. It will be worth the wait.

Maybe they are encrypted. I am not and have great battery.

Andoird Lollipop Preview build LPX13D Battery Life Thread

I've been using it for a little over a day now and the batter life has not wowed me. I've seen better battery life on KitKat. That being said, this is not a final version, and a lot of the Google Services based apps aren't updated yet.
Please share your results of battery life time, and Screen On Time so the community can get a consensus of battery life running this new Developer Preview.
I have achieved just over 4 hours of SOT after my first days use.
Just my thoughts exactly.

It's horrible for me , dunno why . I've got only 2 apps installed , Tapatalk and another one . Miscellaneous is always on top :/ ...
Yea. I've been getting 5+ hours sot on KK. Not on Lollipop. November 3rd isn't too far away tho!
Hammerhead | L Developer Preview Final
Probably shouldn't whine around since it's a developer's preview but I agree with the above posts.. Battery life has been quite pathetic for me as well. Can't make it through a day on a single charge now.
Really missing ElementalX!
Back on kk due to heavy battery drain .. On first preview battery life was awesome .. Don't know what's wrong in the new preview . i hope the final build will be better
I highly doubt the final version will be any better. Less then a month away for final release. It takes a long time to find all those issues etc. It's going to be a work in progress for months.
The final version may be a bit better but I can't imagine 3 weeks is going to make a huge difference.
Absolutely fine for me, same as KitKat.
You guys are doing something wrong.

Apparently not... People who have wiped everything and installed only gmail/tapatalk are also experiencing huge drains even after a few battery cycles.
In my case, the phone sleeps just fine and goes to deep sleep without any wakelocks. However, when I start using it, battery drops down every few minutes and it doesn't even last a day. The overall drain is too much. May be few of my most used apps aren't fully compatible with Lollipop and hence the drain...

I believe the final version is ages ahead of this preview. IMHO they probably had to set up a more or less stable build for developers to test the final API, It doesn't mean the final version got much more changes.
They probably got the tech stuff done and released it for developers without caring of other changes, just technical to make sure apps would work...
Battery for me is being horrible too, got many batdrains but I think It will be improved on the final version.
At 65% battery now. Uptime 16 hours SoT 1 hour 44 min.
Lost 2% battery in 10 hours sleep this night while it was on wifi.
By the way this is the first battery cycle ever on this phone. Bought it yesterday, went home and flashed Lollipop right away then fully charged and started using it. So the usage has some app downloads etc.
The final version for Nexus 5 will not be in the 3/11.
Google will only update at that day the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, Nexus 9. (hardware without LTE).
Nexus 5 will be update to Android 5.0 later of November. (like Nexus 6)
I have this preview version and I see that the gpu driver need some polish.
Personally I get the same battery life on Lollipop than on Kitkat. Maybe little better especially when screen off. I had the "miscellaneous bug" and my battery suffered a lot but I removed many apps (G+ ?) and the battery consumption of the "miscellaneous" things drops to only few percents.
part of the battery life drain is due to the much more aggressive on-demand settings

Same here.. mostly the same battery life..
Overnight drain is reduced - the graph is pretty much horizontal during that time. Once you start using it though it doesn't seem any different.
Only thing I have installed currently is the google apps (chrome, G+, gmail, maps).
Please use the current battery life thread here

Those on Lollipop, has battery life changed?

One of the key features of Lollipop is Project Volta, which is supposed to improve battery life, specifically standby time. I know the update has only been out a few days, but for those that have it, how much has your battery life improved?
It seems drastically better for me. Enough so that I'm going to keep the phone after thinking about getting rid of it after early battery life underwhelmed me. Where I used to finish the day at 10% or so, I'm now closer to 30-40%.
What I've found is that L without Greenify has battery life like Kitkat did with Greenify. Now that we have root we'll see if greenify makes it even better.
It's been a solid improvement for me, at least when I'm connected to wifi and the phone isn't being actively used. Probably only losing about 1% an hour now, as opposed to more like 3% before.
Project Volta optimizes battery consumption but app developers have to support the APIs, see here:
https://developer.android.com/about/versions/android-5.0.html#Power
So, basically, Google and Motorola apps probably already use this, but battery life will not be so much better until app developers introduce support for these APIs

Battery Issues
I may be in the minority here, but my battery life has significantly decreased since the update. I don't have specific figures but I do know that on normal usage, whereas my battery used to be at about 70% after approximately 4 hours, it's now down to about 50%. I suspect it is due to some apps that are not optimized for 5.0 that are restarting again and again in the background. Either way, I hope this issue is corrected because I am having a hard time walking away from the charger for very long.
Mine is much better then before on KK.

[Q] looking for opinion On downgrading

I have a moto x 2014 and because I joined the soak test I did not spend much time on kitkat, since lollipop battery is awful I get roughly 1:30 to 1:40 of SOT, I have been considering downgrading to kitkat if it would greatly improve battery life because I have heard 5.1 doesn't help, please I would like to hear the opinion from the community thank you
You should look at your usage and tips to maximize the battery. Lollipop is pretty much overall an improvement to battery life AFAIK.
Check location reporting. Location type. (I use device only, less radio use, faster lock). Service quality... The usual suspects.

After updating from KitKat to lollipop 5.0.1 I am very dissatisfied with the battery.

Hello all, I am assuming other people have had this issue, but are there any roms out there that fix the battery life between the KitKat and Lollipop updates? My battery was amazing at first, I could come off battery in the am, and still be at 95% around noon to 1pm, but now it drains about 20% faster it seems (wild guess, but I very much do not like it.)
Let me know if anyone has come across a rom that has the awesome battery as KitKat had, otherwise I might just try and go back to that.
Thanks!
I'm currently finding myself in the same situation as you. I've been on 5.0.1 for a while, but my battery life has been pretty bad. I just haven't bothered to do anything about it until my son got a Moto G and can get 5.5-6 hours of SOT, and I'm struggling to get 2.5 lately.
I installed CM 12.1 nightly last night, and so far, it may actually be worse. I can't keep it anyways due to music playback bugs.
I was on TEKXodus N4 URv3.6R3 prior to switching. Like the ROM (as much as one can like a TW ROM), but didn't deliver battery life.
I actually came here tonight to read up on the KK downgrade routine and find a KK ROM and start that.

Well that is unfortunately not what I was hoping to hear, but it may just be worth downgrading. I do like the aesthetics and such, especially of 5.1.1 which I have on my Nexus 4, but I much prefer usability and battery that kitkat provided.
I'm sure I'm not alone in saying it's possible to get just as good battery life on LP as KK. I think you need to look at your setup, wakelocks, rogue apps, too many notifications or apps that constantly sync over the internet etc. Example: I lose 2% battery over night (8 hours).

Fwiw, I reverted to ank4 based FireKat and my battery life is back to great. 4 hours sot + 8 hours of music via slacker and/or Google.
People say you can good battery life on LP but I never could. I went through guide after guide, and none of it ever did anything for me. I'm also not going to cripple my phone for the sake of battery. I'd still like it to work.

battery drain on standby is high!

hi everyone, my droid turbo drains battery on stand by stated as "cell standby". this problem was on lollipop and after the update it is still almost same. it drains like 10-13% overnight. any solutions pleas?
Having the exact problem on lollipop, haven't upgraded yet cause I plan to unlock bootloader sometime. Even my Moto X 2014 used to give me more battery life, though it had a tiny 2300mAh battery. I was thinking maybe I had a bad battery but now I don't seem to be the only one having this trouble. Maybe you should try Greenify & Amplify. There are also some pretty good Battery Saving mods available on XDA, go give them a shot.
Unlock bootloader, root, install stock-based, debloated, tweaked ROM:

@Computerfreak, thanks for such an excellently crafted ROM!
The battery performance is truly fantastic as is the audio quality.
FYI, I installed the stock ROM and thought that I had done something wrong when the battery drain was so high. @ChazzMatt suggested/recommended giving your version a go and I went with his suggestion. I am beyond glad that I did!
The battery drain went from me being able to watch it drop each minute to it not moving a single degree in over an hour. Six hours later and it's only dropped 7%-8%. (Wi-Fi was on for 5 hours and the music player was in use for 1 hour.) Nice!
The audio quality improvement was more than simply noticable in the car this afternoon (Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas"); it was smooth and clear enough that I thought that it sounded like I had higher-end speakers/amp. Extra nice!
Your tweaks are much appreciated - much appreciated!
BTW, all of your apparently long-time fans kept mentioning Pon-3 and Xposed, so I'm off to explore.
Thanks, again for a wonderful job!
