[Q] Battery Drain - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yeah i know, the same old problem but bear with me guys.
So i use Carbon..latest version (11/19) and i've recently decided to try these 2 kernels: CroPol kernel and PA kernel by tenshi and so far i've noticed no change in battery drain...it drains VERY fast!
So my questions to you guys and i'm gonna number them so they are easier to follow:
1- Is there something wrong with Carbon these last several updates?
I've bought a new battery and nothing changed. Should i migrate to a different rom?
2- Which kernel is best suited for Carbon or for S3 mini in general? and can i undervolt it?
3- I'm a super heavy mobile data/ Wifi user so what's the best governor/schedule combo to use to save battery...i dont mind it being slow as long as it saves battery. I use Powersave/noop all the time but still no use.
Please help!! :crying:
Thank you very much.

same Problem :/
I got the same problem since using the new Carbon version in KK 4.4.4.
nothing helps until now.
what i tried so far:
- formattig everything in EXT4 instead of f2fs
- factory reset
- flashing Stock rom
- flashing cyanogenMod 11 from novafusion.
- using battery calibration
what i noticed in Carbon:
-taking pictures with flashlight were killing my phone, restart with 30% less battery power. this bug appeared when using f2fs formatting but not ext4.
what i noticed in cm11:
- after normal restart also 20% less battery power.
what i noticed in all roms i tried after the bug appeared:
- when battery has around 20% battery phone will just shutdown and restart with 1% battery :/
can anybody help ?

Same here with but with random boots! (see the thread)

Same here after using f2fs on AOSPA and CM11. Now I'm on EXT4 + Stock Rom and I've got 10-20-30% battery loss after reboot.
However, battery indicator is wrong, but battery will last as if the percentage were still as before the reboot.
Also getting huge "Android OS" battery drain with no explanation from BBS
There's really no way to revert battery fuel gauge accuracy to stock behaviour?

Today i noticed also the random reboots.
When the phone was charging over the day and i tried to open SMS or any application, it suddenly reboots with 20% less battery power.
i think this bug is caused of the f2fs patition. i will try to flash a pitfile and stock again. the last time i didnt use a pit file.
i will let you know what happend

this has most probably nothing to do with F2FS or any file system. i am using ext4 and i have the same issue.

Flashed stock rom with .pit file and nothing changed
Also I'm sure this has nothing to do with battery health, since battery lasts the same as before

hopefully tomorrow i am getting my new battery and i'll see if it is a physical battery problem (mine is a year old). because on slimkat, carbon and cyanogenmod there is this problem (and stock rom as you have shown here). if this ain't a physical battery problem, may god help us (i'll be forced to buy a new device)

Mine is one year old too, as well as the ones from other s3 mini users here on xda that have had this problem... let me know if it's worth it! I'm really getting crazy on this one...

nothing changed with pit file flash
i noticed:
no installing of new apps (SD-Card interactions) except of wakelock detector
just using WIFI, G3 SMS and Phone
was the behaviour normal! around 10% battery loss in ~5 hours
But when i pressed restart to reboot the phone!
it Crashes continuesly and battery jumped to 20%.
so the phone is doing something in the bootup process, which has a huge battery drain!
ill try today evening to flash previous CM with f2fs. I don't think that the battery is damaged. otherwise the batteryloss would be consistent.

Ok guys I'm not taking credits of this method to see if something's wrong with your battery but this is it
Take out your battery and place it ona flat surface, then spin it horizontally on both sides, if on one of the two sides it spins and doesn't get stopped by friction then the problem is that the battery is going to inflate and this means the battery is going to die
This is my case, so I'm gonna buy another original battery and let you know
If it isn't the problem for you, then it's a software problem with partitions

oh yeah. my old battery was definitely swollen. not much swelling can be seen without taking the battery out but one can see it clearly on a flat surface. it spins right round

with the new battery
it's still early to tell whether it was definitely a battery problem or not for me, but it surely looks that way. here are my stats after somewhat heavy* first usage:
so, do the "battery spin test" on a table like @h4wkst3p suggested. if it spins, no good i am afraid
*: by heavy i mean setting up the system after a clean flash. y'know installing all the apps etc.
i offline charged the new battery to 95% and the images show the remaining amount.

this looks like it's totally fixed omg
The reboot with drop should be because of reboot after installing apps (generating dalvik etc), right?

actually, no it was after i installed all the apps i then installed adaway & xprivacy— and both need a reboot.
as i said, i first topped the battery till ~95% by offline charging. plugged out the USB cable. booted into recovery, wiped and flashed. then booted into clean slimkat and start using it. all on battery power!

alright you got me!
I've tried everything! flashing stock,pit,cm10.2, cm11 newer revision, deleting batterystats.bin and dockbatterystats.bin. reloading several times, but only got depressions.
Maybe there was a strange bug during the first flash progress, which destroyed the battery ?
Because we flashed all the same CM11 based version, and it killed the batteries, which was running excellent before :/
i'll order a new one now =) did you buy the original one? or another with more mA ?

original one...and after the second charge it holds on standby quite nicely

I finally made it to get the original Samsung battery for Christmas from Amazon
This is my partial usage with a reboot at 65%
After the reboot it got to 66%
This is great, so it definitely was the old bad battery

[Q] Fast battery drain after gingerbread, anybody else experiencing it?

Well after many many tries with topogigi's rom i had a lot of battery drain, after a while i thought its probably ok cause its a gb leak, probably its not that bad.
well after few days using it i decided to change back to froyo so i changed to FR19 from modaco but i have the same drainage really really big and really fast, i use the wifi for like 2 or 3 minutes and it goes down like 5 %.
My question is this normal? is my battery broken?
i did the calibration couple of times, i checked the usage of battery, just the "0" and "1023" proccesses using a lot of battery, i also checked if it was some app runing in the background but nothing seem wrong.
can you guys help me with these issues do you think i should change the battery or just keep calibrating it.
BTW i also read about how the battery Mv should be at 4200Mv when its at 100% but mine is just at 4170Mv and suddenly goes down to 4112 or less.
I hope you can help cause this is really annoying me a lot.
Greetings
Did you do a factory reset after updating to gingerbread, you need to do a factory reset, after your battery should be fine, make sure to take your SD card out.

by that you mean a complete wipe if it like i did it like many times but nothing today im gonna try charging my phone off and deleting the batterystats.bin by myself
btw i have froyo now its faster than gingerbread but anyways have a lot of battery drain

Gingerbread is not battery friendly. With tweaked ROMs and tweaked kernels you can have correct results (see my config below), but Froyo 10d is stilll a reference hard to reach...

this could be many diff things, what i would do is 1 of 3 things:
1- try to calibrate it again
2- try a new kernel (maybe an sbc kernel, it might work better for you)
3- maybe try to flash a new rom for a bit and see if the rom you are running at the moment just doesn't like your phone.
at the moment i am running the decks rom for gingerbread and svz 2.2.1 kernel, however i just like to test new things but what has worked the best for me is the godmode (V9) kernel. i stopped using it because he is no longer updating his kernels but with godmode kernel and cm7 my phone lasted me a total of 1 day and 6 hours on 1 charge.
well thanks a lot for the help green arrow, what i did know was i charge full on and off after that delete battery stats manually calibrate it with battery monitor widget then turn off charge a little bit again turn on delete battery stats again and reboot this worked for me from 9:30 pm to 8 am just wasted 8% sleeping but anyways i thought it was too much so i checked better battery stats so there is a process called nvrm daemon the weird thing is that i dont have an overclocked kernel and im not using daemon so i wonder what it is.
if you want i can attach a screencap so you can help a little bit with this oddly changes with my battery.
Another thing is during night there was some changes it went from 2mh to 60mh then it start going down until 10mh at 7:30 am, if you want i can add the history report from battery monitor widget.
And finally im using gr4 Modaco's with stock kernel. Btw i changed my RIL to the v20j version the one that came with the rom and it seem pretty good after 10 minutes it sticked to 2mh.
well im gonna take some screens and upload them for you.
Some screens so i can get some more help

Huge Battery Drain ?? plz help, tried everything

Hello friends.
Using o2x from 2 weeks.
Tried lot of roms, all kernels etc.
but what i get average 1 day use of phone, 17 to 20 hrs (less 8 hrs of sleep then it comes to 9 to 12 hrs). with normal use.
1 hrs calls, 0.5 hrs data and remaining is here and there sneaking in phone.
i never used gps, wifi,bt etc, all are in off state.
.
now i m currently on cm7 kang by temasek with irnkernel.
still battery giving same draing.
draining 1% just in 3 to 5 mins when i m using phone (not on call or data).
and main point is i m on edge coverage, so no 2g use.
data is always off.
.
i dont know what eating my battery too much..
.
realy, i m getting upset.
i tried every kernel and every rom, did battery calibration etc.
.
Update : I forgot to mention i m using class 2, 16 gb micro cd card.
also i m using acer liquid metal's usb charger for charging.
will this affect on my battery ?
update : guys i want to mention one thing.
today i pissed of with this problem and thought it was battery problem.
so i planned to go customer care.
then turned back v20e which official 2.3 for india.
then i saw dramatic changes in my battery drain.
it was half as before, with stock thing, no apps installed, not rooted etc.
i m still monitoring my battery.
.
also one thing, is go launcher will be cause for this ?
cause when flashed with v20e. the widget show drain as around 130-150 mA.
then i installed go launcer ex, then drain was 250 mA.
.
what is ur normal drain when u r using phone ? (for those who r getting best battery life)
.
.
can anybody share his battery drain graph which taken by battery monitor widget ?
here are some screenshots :

I have a similar problem, but it's likely because of 3G. With V10F Froyo, the phone drained <1% per hour in stand by, with 3G on. With V20L, and CM7 (any version of them), my phones draines 3-5% per hour. Tried anything, any ROM/BB combination, returned phone to warranty, but nothing.

OMG u r god!
how the hell do you have such a battery life?! even I am on temasek's kang!! at avg with your kind of usage it will go for less than a day :/
same with me..
hardly a day..
is there any problem in indian phones ?
See that 'better battery stats' image you put up? See the drop down menu that says 'since unplugged'? Change that to 'partial wakelock' and get a picture of it to show us the result
Also, you seem to have a lot of battery apps on the go.. are they conflicting?

i dont know
I had a problem with huge battery drain and the culprit was my sd card. I dont know why but it had problems scanning it so I think it got stuck in a scanning loop of some sort. When I removed it, all was fine.

nope.

Perhaps you need to calibrate your battery (using baterry calibration app) and wipe the battery stats (via cwm)

i did it already.
My recommendation:
1. Flash vadonka's kernel (ironKrnL has good performance, but drains battery fast).
2. Remove widgets which keep accessing the net in background, stop background data over network (in settings)
3. Install AnTuTu battery saver and set battery saver level to level 2.
4. Remove SD card. Try to manage for a day without SD card. Set internal storage as SD card in CM settings.
5. End all background apps after using any app (use dr. battery saver or similar app to kill all apps).
6. Take any other precautions, such as lowering screen brightness, tick "use only 2G networks" option, dont allow automatic email syncing in background etc.
Try this for one day on a full battery and let us know the results. If it does not improve much, you probably have a defective battery. I also own this phone in India and my battery easily lasts 2 days on normal usage.

Thats normal i think. Get nearly the same results.
Try Rugglez suggestion.
Also check if your Baseband matches your RIL.(Download GetRil from Market)
And go into Settings --> Apps --> Running Apps and check if there are many Services running in the background.
Also you can try to install the Autostarts app, which lets you control which apps are allowed to open themselves in the background.

Galaxy tab P7300 battery drain in 20 min

Hi all. After installing custom rom official from p7500 my battery got crazy and drains out after 20-30 min even after i charge it all night long. I did a stock recovery i also tried another rom but same problem with ALL ROMS. stock or costums! Need help plz.
We are in the same boat, most of us is facing this issue, but there is not a known fix.
We have to wait an answer from dev, KK, for a real idea on how to fix it.
Inviato da Tapatalk
Yep, same here (7310). Getting bootloops sometimes too. Tab completely destroyed. Battery doesn't even last long enough to fool a pawn shop into buying it.
Someone report that an attempt to fix is to go in cwm and let drain battery until it shutdown by itself, then recharge. Just give it a try.

Hi. Had same problem. Even nandroid recovery has the bug.
But i have my solution found. Now i am on KoldKaffee rom (it is suberb) - an the BATTERY WAS WONDERFUL
The failure was - that we flashed the Custom Rom with a not fully charged battery.
Okay what i do.
1. Loaded the akku - how much it goes - that i have enough for return to go back to stock 3.2
2. 3 x Wipe + delete Battery Stats in Recovery
3. Go into Stock 3.2 and do FACTORY RESET in Settings
4. after Reboot - shut down the 8.9 (turn power off)
5. USE POWER KABEL WITH PC (loading will take time
6. after it is full - you can install KK rom again

Has anyone tried to install battery calibration from the market? If you install a custom rom, charge your battery to the max. Open battery calibration (needs root) reset your stats unplug the charger and use the tablet until it powers down by itself (do not turn it off with the off button, sleep is ok, complete off NOT).
That always is the fix when installing it on my Samsung phone. After that the battery acts normal again. No need to wipe 3 times, install stock or whatsoever.
A lot of sites say battery calibration does nothing and is a myth or something, but I tried it anyway.
I'll give the CMW battery drain method a go.

I did the cwm method. Before do it i installed with odin a stock rom. I let the battery drain with cwm opened and then i did a full charge. Now battery is better. No so good than before but much better from yesterday. 4 hours now and its at 60%. I am still at stock 3.2. Ill try again for second time full drain battery with cwm and ill do a full recharge again before use. Hope this works.
I just gotta get the battery to drain slow enough to be able to sell it to a pawn shop now really... Heh.
I did this!
I let my tab be on charge until it was completely full (tab on), then I unplugged the charger and rebooted in to recovery (ClockworkMod Recovery v5.5.0.4) and did a battery stats wipe. When i rebooted it first did that blank screen boot (same as when i installed the rom).
I did this 5am this morning and now after c:a 16hours standby and 1hour surf/games its down to 85%! :fingers-crossed:

I'm on KK 7510 ICS port.
I had massive battery after flashing the P7500XXLQ8 P7500OXALQ8 for P7300 v2 (I came from cm-10).
I didn't think to check my battery charge level before I flashed but I suspect it was around 30%.
The new from was great but the tab died under general use within 60 minutes.
The battery level indicator was erratic- moving up and down between restarts and charges.
Problem persisted after full wipe and stock 3.2 flash via Odin3.
After flashing back to 3.2 i took the advice from astuermer and drained my system power, then rebooted into recovery and drained my battery for a further 5 hours until my tab was completely dead (yellow triangle next to the RED battery symbol on lpm animation).
Then proceeded to fully charge tab (while powered off) for 5 hours until 100%. Wiped everything and reflashed ICS rom.
With music player going, 3g browsing and full screen brightness on I'm on 94% after 60 minutes use. So far so good...
Thanks astuermer for helping us and kk for an awesome port
10 hours later.......playing music and 3g browsing for most of the morning and my battery is at 81%....looking good

Well some may claim it's a myth, but when I use a custom rom on my phone. I lasts three hours before calibration and 2 days after. So I am a firm believer. The easy way to check is, when your device claims it's running on fumes. I turn it off and plug in the charger. Then the battery charge indicator comes in screen. Claiming it's 2 third full. So that's when I know to calibrate.
Some hints.
Discharged the battery till system shutdown. Then connected to charger & the start of charging [email protected]%. Upon removal of charger, it says low battery & shuts down.
In cwm recovery now for draining the balance juices to start charging afresh.

hey Guys,
I attempted the cwm battery drain and from personal expeirence can confirm it doesnt work
I rebooted into cwm throught out the entire day until it wouldnt even turn on anymore
i then charged for the enitre day and booted into android to no avail, the problem still persists ... if anything seems more erratic and random than before, 97 to 84 in a minute, then suddently reported 94, then dead.... put on the charger, only works, take it off its working, but draining FAST..
Plan B... cwm charge to 100%.... clear cache, dalvik, battery etc etc reflash rom.... problem still persists and now its beyond me to explain why this is happening
will revert to 3.2
dont get me wrong, the first few days it worked it felt like new life in my tab, was having so much fun, so smooth, accapteble battery. hope this is resolved
Even getting back to hc 3.2 will not solve this issue.

As i wrote i did all these things. I did a secont full drain battery from cwm and a full charge with pad open till 100%. After that i went to cwm again with battery 99% i installed p7500 ics for my p7300 and same time(after the installation before reboot the device) i did a full wipe all things and also battery stats. My battery now afte 1 day 1 hour used time is at 59%. You can see it at the photo. I will do a third battery drain also with cwm after all that and then a full charge again. I HOPE I HELLPED...

[Q] Galaxy S Plus battery swelling?

Dear fellow enthusiasts,
since a couple of days, I'm experiencing sudden device crashes when I'm using it for network related activities, mostly over the 3G network (for example, I'm typing out a message on the Facebook app, and the phone goes into boot loop or simply "shuts down"). I had only recently upgraded to the 4th beta build for the Cyanogenmod 9, hosted here on XDA , so I suspected it would be related to this. However, upon reinstalling both the previous version and the new mod from absolute scratch, the issues remained the same.
I had noticed that after each crash, the battery charge displayed as very low (2-6%), whereas I'm certain the charge should be much higher. So I thought it might be some sort of corrupt battery-cache issue or something.
However, and here's my actual question, I just now noticed that my I9001 battery is slightly bulged, on both ends. This bulge starts just above the white printed SAMSUNG lettering, and it ends just bellow the QR code. I can't for the life of me remember if or not this is normal, so could someone please confirm this for me?
And while we're at it, could a faulty battery affect my performance as such (making my phone crash etc)?
Thank you very much in advance for any help or information anyone could give me.
I confirm, battery is slightly bulged in those places but it looks like a production "thing" to me (I hope I understood what you mean), no need to worry, I guess. Looks like corrupted battery stats, try to wipe it via recovery (phone fully charged, plugged in - then wipe battery stats). After that, i recommend one or two full battery discharge - charge cycles. I've noticed hovever, that after each full factory reset I have for about 20% better battery drain, than after flashing many ROMs, kernels and updates (cache and dalvik cache wipe only), my battery drain is getting pretty annoying. Try a full factory reset, if wiping battery stats didn't work.

Thanks again for the assistance!
Swollen battery = defective!
I'm sorry but I've encountered this as well in the past. Normally working phone with sudden shut downs and huge drops in battery charge. It took me a long time to convince me that the battery was defective. So maybe this would save you guys some time in finding this out!

In general healthy batteries DO NOT swell. Buy a new one before it explodes or starts leaking...
Hey all, just because people keep on posting, the battery was indeed defective, the roms were absolutely fine and the new battery is performing marvellously!
Thanks again for all the input !

I have the exact same problem with my sgs i9000-gt.
My phone turn off itself ( no restarts, its a complete shutdown ).
First, I thought i might be a problem of GB 2.3.6 rom i was using, so i updated to latest cm10 but the problem persists.
If you restart the phone after the shutdown than i shuts down within a minute again.
Also the battery drain is pretty fast. I notice the same bulges on the battery as reported in this post.
I did the battery calibration thing as some people suggested, but that does not solves the problem. However, it got rid of the fast changes in battery status which was happening before. Like when you restart after shutdown at 80% battery status, it will show like 2% battery left and after few minutes of charging it would boost back to 80-90%.
But still the battery drain is pretty fast. It discharges from 98% (i cannot get to 100% charge, 98% is highest) to 50 % within an hour, just idling.
And when i am around 40% or so and if i recieve some message and try to open a app it shuts down again.
I have ordered a new battery just in case. Will update here if that improves things for me. But i will still like advice on which is a more economical kernel and rom for i9000-gt? Some people suggested slim bean + semaphore on some forums but i would like to have some more concrete advice before i change more things without knowing the source of the problem. I would be grateful if someone can suggest what is best to use with some details( version, etc). Thanks for that in advance.
I thank you all (users + developers) for all the useful information provided on this forum, i learnt a lot although i still am not able to fix my problem . And I hope someone might come up with a concrete solution for this problem. If there is a solution which I might have missed, I thank you in advance again and hope you will be kind enough to point me in the right direction.
cheers
update: the phone stays alright if u dont do anything on it, but the moment you being doing something on it other than playing with system settings, like run some app, especially something that uses network / wifi, it shuts down. none of this happens though while its plugged in. it happens only when its on battery.
problems fixed so far after replacing the battery

I flashed back to stock samsung rom ( from the value pack) and the problem persisted.
today my new battery arrived and all the forementioned problem seems to be gone with the new battery, my phone seems to be working fine for last 5 hrs without any restarts or crazy battery drain. will test the same with custom roms again. As of now it only seems that problem was the battery.
Cheers.

[Q] Is it normal for my battery to be so bad?

Hey all!
I've bought my Optimus 4X HD recently. I'm loving everything! Except the battery...
Today, I've tested it again and here's what the battery is able to do!
- 6 hours of standby, 3G and Sync enabled
- 4 times checked mail for like 4 minutes total
6 Hours later: 30% remaining.
Is it normal for this battery to be so weak? I've "calibrated" (drained to 0% and charged to 100% - left it for a long charge the first time too)
If it's abnormal I'll contact the helpdesk and see if they can replace my battery, just want to be sure if it's normal or not.
Software is latest available, non-root, very few apps -- verified with taskkiller of AVG: nothing is running in background or anything.
Thanks!
I think there are some wake locks denying the system to go into deep sleep.
Search the forum for solutions, it's a well discussed topic on here

I usually get at least fourteen / sixteen hours on a single charge when I unplug it in the morning before work, varies with how long the Wi-Fi turned on, and I get at least three hours of screen time, one or two of voice calls. I also have mobile 3g data always on with alerts for email, Facebook and Google+. Usually I listen to music for about an hour and half too. I'm running the 20a euro rom official, rooted. Try factory resetting and rooting to remove bloatware and LG logging software.
Hope this helps!

Very few apps installed by you... there is a lot of stuff running in background that you don't even imagine.
Search for the threads about "battery drain" and you'll get some more info.
Do you run the new 4.1 Jelly Bean? There is some huge debate going on, how the update affects battery life. Personally, I ran into huge battery problems after updating to 4.1. The drain was especially heavy during the night, when I usually active airplane mode. With ICS I lost about 1% during an 8 hour night, under JB it was 20-30%. I read up on the threads in this forum and followed many suggestions. I started to monitor battery drain with different apps running/frozen, wifi, 3G, airplane mode enabled/disabled and so on. To analyse the battery I found the apps "CPU Spy", "Wakelock Detector", "GSam Battery Monitor", and "Battery Log" helpful.
But to be honest, I am no "android pro". I monitored my battery drain for over a week and did not find a satisfying solution for the problem. Thanks to this forum and many excellent posts I managed to roll back my phone to 4.0.3 ICS. Now my battery drain is the way I remember it and I am happy again
For me, this solved the problem. Although I do not run JB, and some of the enjoyable improvements it had, anymore. I know that for some people rolling back is no option. If you cannot locate the battery killer easily and you are willing to play around with your device (rooting, freezing apps...), you might as well roll back and give that a try.
You should explore your device and your stock apps...
My battery last in JB for so long as in ICS.
If there are differences they're small.

Yes!
Thanks all, very useful replies!
I've tried simply factory resetting it and, for about 3 hours it stayed on 100%, 2 hours on 99% and etc, very awesome!
I then set up my mail and other things and it went bad again. I had this sync symbol in my notification bar -- no clue why it was there all the time.
I googled why it was there and it's because the sync fails so it keeps trying. I removed the picasa for the email account (because uni mail doesn't support picasa and other google services) and my battery is top notch again! For now at least .

mine is bad because of the baseband_xmm_power wakelock, had this on stock 20A but didn´t had on 10h... as far as i can search, there is no solution other than revert to old 10h....
I bought a spare battery so i never run out of juice! Reverting firmware is not an option for me.

i believe this wakelock is affecting every phone since 20A, just install betterbatterystats and see it plague and suck our battery juice
