New to GS5 - Question - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I believe I have done enough research to see that I can root the newest version of the gs5 with towel root, and can install a bootstrap recovery.
I havent found a clear thread on restoring the newest update back to stock...is there anywhere that has the odin downloads for the newest?
Or is it ok to download a previous firmware? And then I will just get prompted to install the update?
I have owned an htc one, and nexus phone, but new to this one...I always like to know how to restore to complete stock before I try anything, so any help here would be greatly appreciated.
thanks!

So if I have AND3 version right now this won't work? Because the bootloader won't flash and then wouldn't be able to set up ota updates... Is that right?

Yep you'll have to use muniz_ri method to downgrade to NCE then follow the steps it's actually quite easy to do so I've done the method several times after soft bricking my s5

Is it as simple as flashing that downgrade tar file in Odin? Just put that single file in and it'll downgrade it all?
Thanks for the help by the way.

Yes then follow the steps as indicated in the thread. It shouldn't take you more than 15-20 minutes in total to downgrade and complete the process. Just take your time and read and follow instructions exactly.

Im reading that the bootloader wont downgrade properly...is this correct?
If I downgrade, I would want to totally downgrade everything, that way my phone could receive OTA updates to get back to date correctly in case of a restore to stock.
Does that make sense? I have yet to find a guide or anything that allows AND3 based software to be able to restore to a "complete" stock. I was hoping to be able to downgrade it all, even the bootloader, and then just be able to receive the OTA to get back to AND3 stock.

You can Odin to NCE bone stock and take the NG3 update and not root and when 5.0 drops take the Lollipop update.

Gotcha, that makes sense, because you couldnt even install pwnmymoto on the new firmware from stock.
it seems like the best option is to run the safestrap for the time being

or follow the thread for taking the ota and keeping root. Both let you downgrade back to original stock FW because neither touch your BL. I run SS but the other method works just fine as well now. I also flashed the new baseband in SS for call quality. Running smoothly.

You cannot downgrade. Not sure what you're talking about. If you still think you can, list the steps here. I'll do it now.
Keeping root through an OTA and downgrading to earlier firmware are two completely different things. Why don't you clarify.

you mis-read what i was saying. perhaps adding quotations to my earlier post will make more since.
just for further clarification in case you aren't understanding what I meant still.
3 methods to keep root through OTA:
(1) SS
(2) method found under the thread titled something like "keeping root through the OTA"
(3) install pwmymoto without running, take ota, pwnmymoto automatically applies root after taking OTA
methods 1 & 2 allow you to "downgrade" or rather flash the original stock firmware onto the phone because neither methods touch the BL
method 3 does not allow you to do this as the BL has been touched and security parameters set to not allow you to go back to original stock firmware.

read the "tutorial for keeping root..." thread also in this section. i think it's believed that pwnmymoto changed something so that when the ota is taken the BL doesn't update, and u can flash the older fxz again to return to that firmware and essentially downgrade. at least from what I've read. not a whole lot of confirmation on it last I checked.
"Keeping root" and "downgrading" again - two vastly different scenarios. Once you take the update, there in no way to downgrade to previous firmware. Go ahead and ask jcase.
Further citation isn't needed, as I read exactly what you wrote.

A few people are saying here that we can downgrade since the boot loader was not updated using the tutorial given in this same forum....Someone tried "downgrading" to stock firmware as well and it has worked...the key is bootloader prevents the downgrade and it was not touched using the said method...

Let me explain:
If you installed pwnmymoto and did not run it, while stock, then took the update - then maybe you can flash back. Couple guys above claim they did it, who am I to think they're lying. That's not what I'm saying though.
If you didn't install pwnmymoto before updating then no chance. So it depends on how you took the update. If never rooted and took it - nope. Can't downgrade. If you RSD' back to stock unrooted, installed pwnmymoto but didn't run it - you're good taking the update.
I think that's where the confusion lies. I've tried a few ways to downgrade and no dice. Took the gbt.bin from the new update, put it in the old, opened the .XML to change the MD5 (pretty sure I didn't put correct one) repackaged and tried to flash. Failed at gbt.bin. I'm just playing around and seeing if I can get back somehow. I restore web hosting all day and have bricked multiple times on phones. Lol. So I'm not really scared. But even if I did get it to flash back, I'm pretty sure the exploit is patched in the file I'm replacing.

Do not root 5.0 this variant of s5

If you are going from 4.4.2 Stock to 5.0 after the 4.4.4 update for SM-G900A you will not be able to root nor be able to go back to 4.4.2 this is not a fact some correct me if i'm wrong.

Best way to root latest 5.1 pure edition OTA?

What are people doing to root the newest official 5.1 pure OTA? I saw a couple of threads about root floating around, but cf autoroot seems to have failed for a few people. What are you guys using to root?

Completing this question by adding one more bit that is there any root method which supports easy unrooting like Kitkat days where we don't have to go through hassles and risks of flashing whole stock ROM again?
I rooted 5.1 by booting twrp and flashing latest supersu. I haven't tried yet to full unroot but it should work.

Via fastboot. I just unrooted my device, although bootloader says "Software status : Modified" so i don't think it's safe to OTA update.
Be careful with this method though. Cause as of now there is no full image of 5.1. Therefore no stock recovery if you want to flash everything back like stock , unless you go back to 5.0 and then flash ota, hence the potential risk.

No, that's never been a thing. It only wipes /data and doesn't touch /system at all.
For that to work, they'd have to take up valuable phone space with system images.
As for root, getting it is virtually unchanged since 4.4.4. Use Cf-Auto-Root or let twrp do it.

since there is full image of latest 5.1 ota for pure edition, there are low risks of rooting.
any suggestion?

Just flash TWRP and root that way... If you don't want to overwrite the default recovery, boot TWRP. No real risks, it hasn't changed from 5.0.

Unable to update AT&T Galaxy S5 to Lollipop on stock Touchwiz

I have an AT&T Galaxy S5 that has the default version of Touchwiz on it, with Android 4.4.2. I never rooted or flashed any roms on this device, yet I am unable to get OTA updates.
My friend, who has the same phone with AT&T, updated to Lollipop a while ago, and recently got another update, both of which I didn't get. Whenever I check for updates on my phone, under the About Device section in system settings, it says "Software Update Interrupted. No update is available for your device at this time. Please try again in 24 hours."
What can I do to update my device to Lollipop?
Thanks,
Sid

I used one click root for the root. But the bootloader stays locked on at&t s5, so their are two options that i know of. One, use odin and the correct tar to unlock it which is risky, or use an app called safestrap. Thats what I did.

revert my phone to what? Your language is very ambiguous.
If you didn't have root before OTA 5.0 (Lollipop) you can't go back, you can't use safestrap, can't use Odin AND CANT ROOT YET. A locked loader won't allow you to use Odin to flash, and no root means can't get safestrap.. 1 click root only works before OTA 5.0 UPDATE. There is always a way but not yet.

There are a few threads on here how to get root, then upgrade to lollipop and keep root. Then you can still use safestrap to change loaders and roms. Safestrap just simply interupts the boot sequence(before the loader). I'm guessing once you upgrade, your loader will be locked also, so to change anything you'll have to have a back up on safestrap with the previous version, and unlocked loader... so you can go back and forth. I'm not sure of everything possible since my lazy ass never got root access before the update, so I'm sol for now. I'm planning on getting a new phone soon and giving this s5 to my wife anyway.

Bootloader is and has been locked, safestrap was the only recovery we had because it wasn't a traditional recovery in the sens that it didn't replace the stock one. With lollipop it broke, if you downgrade your kernel you can get it to work, but other than that you have to use flashfire which is not a recovery but simply a flashing tool. Twrp and any other recovery will not work, and any non-touchwiz based roms(aosp, aokp, cm) will not work, you have to use only touchwiz based ones and no custom kernels.
