Now with recovery and root, some roms will come to moto maxx?
Or some port of nexus 6.
One can hope, realistically on the Maxx side we could use sales across a wider audience to generate enough users to reach critical mass. The turbo seems to be selling well and probably would attract some development interest if the boot loader were unlocked and I would think there might be spillover to the Maxx from that. I recall you are already an owner but people who are on the fence due to the possible lack of rom development certainly should take pause. For myself I like the stock Moto software or at least parts of it and with root and exposed I can get all my must haves anyways so I bought in figuring I would be happy with the stock software and a little massaging.
Still its impressive how far things can go even without a developer base, I've had a few phones that never had much developer interest but was still wowed by some of the things users come up with at this site to make them better.

Just a short comment about the state of Motorola locked boot loaders.
I first jumped on the HTC Eris when it was first released and was happy with it as it was updated twice with OTA's then after 11 months nothing and it was end of life for it. Hummmm you buy a phone on two year contract get support for 1 year (maybe) then nothing. So I thought about rooting and after one week I rooted the Eris (thanks XDA) and never looked back. But HTC didn't lock the boot loader then so I was able to run anything I could find and it was a great phone except for the screen size.
So in Sept and went to the Verizon store did a new Bionic and was one happy camper and thinking after Motorola said they were going to unlock the boot loaders that this would last me at least 3 years. It appears that's not going to happen so I'll be rooted and only able to run ROM's which are not to many at this time. I have my doubts that Verizon/Motorola will really come out with ICS for the Bionic and they will no doubt quit support after 10 to 12 months like most of the phones.
So what to do........ I'm thinking NO MORE Motorola (unless they unlock the boot loaders) and I will be only looking for phones that have unlocked boot loaders that help extend the life of good phones.
SO THERE MOTOROLA take that to the bank.

Problem with that is Motorola won't notice the small drop in sale due to the root community and not all of the root community is willing to give up a working phone for a device (notice I didn't say phone) with an unlocked bootloader. For me it sucks because Motorola is the only android phone manufacturer in the US right now, I've owned plenty of Samsung and LG "phones" and the poor signal is a deal breaker, I also owned a thunderbolt and the broken hardware (I had 6 t bolts with messed up audio jacks, power buttons, horrible call quality, and almost non-existent 4g) is a deal breaker.
The locked bootloader isn't the problem, the lack of dev support (which may be because of the bootloader) is. I had a locked down Droid X that was as fast as my t bolt, my locked down bionic is faster with much better battery life than the bolt. With the unlocked bolt you had to choose between battery life or performance, with the bionic I have both even though its locked down and less dev support.

I agree and I like the Bionic it does everything I want now. The problem will likely be in Sept this year when Motorola and Verizon could care less about it. And not much dev support will pretty much dried up to nothing.
I think what be lost in this thread is the actual thought on just how many people keep their phones as long as you indicate. I would wager the average forum user probably gets 18 months or less. I know I am that way. Last year I was in 7 phones and 2 tablets. I bet im a light weight compared to some.
There is too much talk about other phones, too many specs and stories. For the weak, like me, its too easy to move on. I've had my Bionic since october...my finger is getting itchy.

Ditto. More and more, it looks like the only viable modding choice is HTC.
I have been interested in the Moto X ever since the release late last year and now its at such a great price... But I must ask everyone that has already made the jump, is this device what I am looking for?
At the moment I have a Galaxy S3 through At&t loaded up with CM 10.1.3 and to be honest I am happy with the phone... but am becoming more anxious for a upgrade each day, mostly due to the abysmal battery life and non-support for things I like *wallet*.
Anyways needless to say I am about ready to upgrade to something fresh and new. I am choosing to go unlocked because AT&T is offering a discount towards customers who do not take up a subsidized plan.
Naturally I checked out the Google Play edition phones and the Nexus line first, I was hoping the X would be among their ranks, after all google did own motorola up until a week ago. However all they had was the Moto G which was is the lower end sibling to the X.
So thats when I started really digging in and when I found out motorola actually sells unlocked phones through their site. The T-mobile one being the best choice because you can unlock the bootloader and it still supports at&t fully in the USA. The only other option would had been the GSM developer edition, but I would have to forgo any customization for very little benefit in the end.
But I am sitting here wondering to myself... is now a good time to get a new phone, is this the right choice, would this phone make me happy for at least a year and half?
My largest concern with this phone is its future, how much longer can/will motorola support updates for the X? Will we see the next version of android come to this device before its antiqued by motorola? If it is shelved, is the community broad enough to provide quality unofficial updates that will offer a wonderful experience?
I mean when I look at the development section just for the AT&T galaxy S3 there is numerous ROM's several of them being official groups like CM and AOKP. But then when I checked the CM site for the T-Mobile Moto-X there is nothing, it is literally blank, is it because they don't believe the Moto X yet needs CM to fill in the gaps, or is it because they have no interest in supporting it at all?
I would pick a Nexus 5, given it is guaranteed fast updates, but the Moto X just seems like a better fit for me. I love the idea of the anywhere handsfree google now, the style of the phone just looks better, and it is stock-enough for my needs.
I guess ultimately these are my biggest questions.
1. How future-proof do you guys think this is, at least update wise? Since CM does have a page for the Moto-X does that mean they will support it eventually? The phone is widely regarded and to my knowledge quite popular, I dont see why the carrier-locked boot loader would stop CM when it didn't for other handsets.
2. What is battery life like? Given alot of you have probably had the phone for a few months, hows the battery life now, is it degrading badly?
3. Overall would this be a good upgrade coming from a GS3?
4. Should I save up and get a Nexus 5 or another google play device?
5. Is it a good time to upgrade? Or should I wait a month or two?
6. How is the camera? Is it really much worse than the GS4, IP5S, and Nokia Lumina camera's?
7. Does it support google wallet? Does it lack support for any other apps on the play store?
Lastly, how is the support for accessories? I would like to get a Pebble eventually and I have a few bluetooth stereos. Does the Moto X support most of these without issue?
i have a DNA that just went through the wash cycle (accident and not my doing... lol)
while it mostly functions (earpiece, mic and led not) i was going to keep it around as a mp3 player camera of sorts
at the price range of new devices and the development bases i was leaning more towards the X (vzw dev edition)
i was wondering spec wise how this device feels still and if it would be a viable purchase still
google wallet working for this device?
any overall cons you guys feel about it?
safestrap based roms flashed without issue?
i plan on contributing to the dev community for this device and i felt this was the way to go, if anyone could shine some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated , thanks!
1. This phone isn't about specs and yes I would buy it today
2. Yes
3. Nope
4. Why would you use SafeStrap with an unlocked bootloader?
Previous Previous device razr hd series was sparse on dev edition roms and were always in different sections, I meant more the roms themselves then recovery with there being a divide

1. Just bought mine (vzw DE) in febuary, Lateral move from a Droid Maxx (same specs, asside from battery / screen size) Wanted the Maxx DE, but it was out of stock, best thing ever. the phone feels much better in day to day use than that maxx beast of a phone. Wife bought one (motomaker) last month. Would buy again (or might be convinced to wait out the summer as the sucessor has been announced to be coming at end of summer)
2. yes, i have also been using verizons ISIS payment system, the cash back is nice.
3. my only con is that while listening to Audible books, if i get a sms the book will not resume until the active notification is acknowledged
4. roms are for phones that come with bad stock software, you will only need xposed framework and other apps you may want to use with root. no roms needed.
While there are some roms, the Dev Ed hardware is no different than the consumer hardware(only difference is you can keep your warranty when you unlock your boot loader, while consumer ed devices will void their warranty with a boot loader unlock), and roms should work on both interchangeably
thanks, this solidified my choice of the X as my phone as i would have waied for the x2 had my dna not been damaged at the very least the x will be a great backup device down the road
now did you need anything special to get isis to work? does GW work as well? or can you use isis at GW pay stations?
Other then the above mentioned gw question, how much storage is available on 16gb model

Let me start off but saying that I have owned the last three nexus phones, so this is where I am coming from. I am really intrigued by the Z3c. The nexus line just keeps getting bigger and bigger and the cameras always disappoint. I really feel like my nexus 4 was the perfect size (4.7 inches) so the z3c looks amazing at its size. My main concern is dev support. I am hoping someone who owns a z1c can advise what the dev support was like.
Are methods for root and bootloader unlock usually found quickly for sony phones?
Did the same ROMs from the Z1 work on the Z1c with a little bit of modification or were they totally separate from one another? How feature complete were the roms? The last non nexus phone I owned with the original galaxy s and even as the phone matured there were still GPS and other hardware issues due to missing or cobbled together drivers, lack of an open source kernel, etc. I have never owned a sony phone so I don't know what their track record is like here.
I feel confident that an android L upgrade is guaranteed for this phone but aside from that I am hoping for AOSP bases roms (MAHDI rom would be amazing).
Thanks for any insights you guys can provide. I know that past experiences someone had with the z1c doesn't necessarily correlate to what will happen on the z3c but its the best we have to go on right now.

You'll need to be patient, no one has the phone yet so there is no news on how secure the bootloader is. Previous devices in a family is by no means an indicator to how future devices in a family will be (case in point the Nook Color to the Nook Tablet)
Check the Z1C forum to see what level of community support there is but take it with a grain of salt, there will be no 100% guarantee of developer support until it's seen and I would recommend waiting a few weeks/months after people get their hands on the device before buying in if community development is a high priority for you in a new device. I'm personally playing the waiting game with my Nexus 4
I'll be shocked if this phone doesn't receive good dev support. Sony phones(the international ones, at least) have always been very easy to root and unlock, and Sony has given no indication that they will change this. And as long as this remains true, you don't need to worry about dev support. The Z1c even has official SlimRoms support.
This is the phone that i like more in Android.
Unfortunately, there is no GPE edition nor an official AOSP firmware.
If Sony releases one of both versions (I doubt it). I'll buy it!
The reason: Well I'm a Nexus follower, and the Nexus 5 (without a case) is already on the limit for one-handed usage (with my hand of course).
There probably won't be more Nexus devices with less than 69.2 cm of width
So I need to go to a smaller (hi-end) phone
I have spoken to people at Sony and I think official AOSP ROM has a good chance of happening. Not guaranteed but a very good chance.
A Google Play Edition Z3C would more-or-less be a dream come true, especially if I could just flash it onto my regular Z3C. I know that has traditionally been possible with other phones, so I can't imagine this phone would be much different.
Is it safe to say this phone is future proof? I'm in the market for a new smartphone and the X has been at the top of my list(Pure edition). They've already confirmed it will be receiving Lollipop so thats a plus. I know the 801 processor is no slouch, but i'd have to imagine everything moving forward by 2015 should be carrying an 805. Although its still early, the lack of development (based on threads) kind of turns me off. I don't want to solely rely on Moto to push updates to my phone. I'm a flashaholic, so not being able to mess around with the latest drives me nuts lol. Aside from that, the specs on the phone seem great it runs fluid and its a great size. What do you guys think?
I think of this phone like a "Nexus+", its pure stock android with very useful features. Dev doesn't seem like its going to take off any time soon for this phone. By the way people are talking on the forum...we should be one of the first to see Lollipop on our phones so that's a plus for the X.
The only downside I see on this phone is the camera could be better and an SD card slot would be great. I'm sure a future update will take care of the camera issue.
And nothing is future proof.
Motorola phones have been pretty "future proof" as I still have plenty of support for my Razr Maxx HD. If you have an unlocked bootloader (pure edition) then you are good to go. As far as processing power, the phones are much more capable than anything software developers can throw at it. I have a lowly S4 in my Droid Maxx and everything runs smooth. One thing to consider since you are a flashaholic is that the stock rom will be better than any other rom out there since the software that makes a moto x a moto x does not work on other roms, ie. the active display and touchless controls. Of course there are alternatives but they are no where near as polished and well executed. The twist to launch camera feature is so simple I can't believe it is a moto exclusive. Makes you laugh at those other developers and say wtf, such as wtf Samsung, their software is awful, so much so that you can't even be mad at it, just have to laugh. That is the reason why development for the og moto x and droid ultra/Maxx is so slow or in the case of the Maxx, CM dropped it completely. It is not because of poor sales, but because there is a lack of interest. I've flash many ROMs on my razr but I always end up switching back to stock, debloated of course.

No current phone is future proof...
The last year has seen very little advance in ARM-based phones. That won't be true of the next year. In a year, only low-to-mid range phones will be 32 bit. New chips will be on 20 nm process with better power management. I've ordered a Moto X to be a 2-year phone, but in 2 years, the current technology is going to be quite dated. My hope is more effort is put into power management than processing power for the next generation. I think the X will be updated regularly making it last better than an S5 or G3, but it won't stay current for capabilities a year from now.
I loved my Razr MAXX HD, just like Johnny Wong said, and it can still hold its own ( What I mean is that Moto phones usually have great support for long after they have been released). I don't necessarily think the phone is "future proof" because its hardware will certainly be outdated by next year. But, I do think this phone will be useful for years to come. I get that pretty much means future proof, I just wouldn't exactly use that wording. I have the VZW edition, so I don't have an unlocked bootloader, and I will be upgrading in a year. If you get the pure edition I think you will be set. I agree that this is almost an update to the Nexus 5.
