laptop for star wars the old republic

hey guys im looking for a laptop that i can play SW on (low-med settings) and im looking at these laptops

im really going with A because of the cost plus i will be adding 8 gigs of ram to any of these laptops and a clean install of windows 7 64bit to make sure all the bloatware is off but if i must i will go with b or c if that is the only way ill be able to play on low and medium
if i was to go with A and turn off FULL shadows will i be able to pull it off?

Is there a reason you don't want a desktop?

To be honest ..
I think A , B , or C won't play SWOR very well .
You gonna need a good video card and all of these have sub par gaming cards in them .
Should be looking at a laptop with a dedicated video card (not intel on board), an i5 chip at least (i7 preferable) and at least 4 gb of ram .

If on a budget like you said , that will probably do low to medium graphics.

Any of those will be able to play it on low/medium settings. The game runs *very* efficiently. My rig is pretty powerful (i5 2500k OC'd to 4.2Ghz, 8GB of fast ram, GTX 560 OC'd), but I play it on max settings and still get like 80-150fps...in crowded places.
I'm confident my MBP could play this game at all medium settings, and the specs aren't amazing (i5 @ 3.0Ghz, 4GB, GTX 220)

Help my poor computer..

I know there are better forums to ask this on but I love XDA and figured you guys might know a thing or two about computers..
I bought my HP Pavilion dv6 2190 2 years ago and it has been great to me.. only complaint is that the 6 cell battery give me enough time to un plug and find a new outlet..
Anyways after 2 years, it needed some work.. It has a 1.8Ghz i7, Nvidia GT230m 1GB GPU, and I doubled my RAM from 4GB to 8GB and then took the 500Gb HDD out and installed a clean install of windows 7 professional on a 128GB SSD and then put the 500GB HDD in a caddy and installed it in my DVD bay as media storage, plus I never used my DVD drive..
Now I split the 128GB SSD in two partitions for a Ubuntu and W7 dual boot and Ubuntu flies, no issues with videos, unlimited browsers, all kinds of applications open at once, But W7 just plain sucks.. Browsers when watching a Video, the video will become choppy and the entiresystem will come to a hault.. Also even before the SSD and RAM, Editing in Premiere Pro wasnt this choppy. Sometimes it flies like it should, then other times it gets so bogged down with just one Browser open, or when editing Video with no other programs running and less then 60 total processes running Video playback at 1/4 quality is so hoppy its un useable.
I understand that my computer is 2 years old but with this much new equipment and a clean install I would think it would be happy as a champ in both Ubuntu and W7.
I keep my computer clean and dont have tons of programs bogging it down.. I just want to know what you guys think and what info do you need to help me?
I tried to see if I have and back ground programs or processes that are holdong things back but I cant see anything..
Any ideas?

What speed is the 500gb HD? And 1.7 GHz is not that much for video editing. Also make sure you don't have any unnecessary processes running. Go to task manager, second tab, and click the tab that I forgot what it says and I can't check now cuz I'm on a mac. It's the last one.

The HDD is a 7200rpm and is data only. The os and few programs I have are on the SSD. And 1.8 ghz is not blistering fast but has worked just fine before. Plus premiere pro uses the gpu for playback.. And this happens with chrome too. It's not just editing. And I am down to 50-55 processes and they are all system except for the editing program.

Scan with an antivirus. There might be something there. Also if you have the time, format again, might help.

Sounds like a Hardware Acceleration issue to me. That's a weak GPU and everything you describe as causing problems is when the GPU is being utilised. Try turning off Hardware Acceleration in your Browser/Video Player (DXVA), and see if they run better without it.
Windows may also feel sluggish with Aero turned on as that also uses Hardware Acceleration.

I will turn Aero off and see if that helps.. I remember AVG Tune up had me turn off Aero before I did all these upgrades, I will try that. and I know its a week GPU but it ran the murcery playback engine in Premiere Pro for over a year just fine with 1080 h.264 video with color correcting and multiple layers just fine at 1/2 quality realtime playback and now I can't watch 1/4 quality with out the computer coming to a stand still.. could my GPU have gone bad?

multiple AVG full computer scans never come up with anything more then just empty browser cache and cookies and that small stuff.. I may format both the 500GB HDD and the 128SSD.. I know the HDD could use Defraging and probably should be just wipped.. But still the OS's and Programs are on the SSD.. And Ubuntu runs like a champ so I find it hard to think its so much hardware issue.

Its obvious your deep into your beer time.. I just put $200 into this computer to bring it up to speed, I am not buying a new computer.. I only use The hp for video and photo work, 95% of my time is on my Transformer booted into Ubuntu.

Anyhow, to the OP, couple of things:
1. If your copy of Windows isn't legit, get it legit. I remember I used to have problems on my laptop because I hadn't activated my Windows yet. Once I did, everything was gone.
2. What's your WEI for the graphic card? Maybe do a stress test and see how well it performs.

Well worth checking out whether the GPU has indeed gone bad. Run some tests and monitor temps too as it may be throttling. Don't forget that the age of that Laptop puts in within the period of time of the Nvidia 'Bumpgate' troubles, where their mobile GPU's were dying left and right because of a manufacturing defect.

Windows is legitimate. I am a student and got w7 professional as a download with a valid product key.
I am not sure about my WEI. I will check it when I get back home. I believe that it was very high 5+ if I remember rightly. I will try testing the card this afternoon and see what is up.
I would be a sad dude if my gpu was bad. I am well out of my warranty

it's a pretty little graphics demo that won't over-stress anything, but can give you some idea if your're GPU is unstable. Run GPU-Z at the same time to monitor temps and to see if the GPU is running at it's proper speed:

So I ran that applet and it ran just fine gpu around 75-80C and gpu load around 15-20% but premiere and online videos are killer. Not smooth at all.
So as soon as I load up premiere, the gpu maxes out the clock speeds which I assume is OK because it's getting used? It never shows the gpu load to go up though.

If it's not crashy under load i think we can rule out a GPU failure. What's the CPU utilization while you're running Premier and Videos? Take a look in Task manager to see what it's doing.
It could just be something simple like a dodgy plug-in, or a driver that needs to be re-installed. If you haven't already to could try re-installing/updating the usual candidates. Graphics drivers/Flash/Siverlight/Browser/Sound.

Graphics driver is the most current Nvidia Driver, Flash is current, It happens on all browsers so I want to rule out Chrome, and what about sound could it be? I just figured that the sound uses the built in sounds card on my motherboard.. I assumed my windows updates took care of that..

Device Manager will tell you if there's any problems. Press Win Key+Pause/Break, Device Manager and look for any exclamation marks in yellow triangles.
I'd still be interested to see what the CPU is doing when the issues crop up.
Also, test your drive with HDTune:

It will help diagnose any drive errors.

I will check but I am starting to rule out hardware, only because my ubuntu boot is very very fast. I have never had chrome or firefox slow down on me. So I am thinking about doing a clean wipe of my ssd and my hdd and see if that fixes it.

Everyone works their way around to a clean install eventually!
I used to tell people to start with doing that, as it ends up being the faster option after all the messing about, but then people always want to try every other possible option first. I've learned that it's best to let them come to that conclusion all on their own!

Well, I can answer some of your question.
FPSE: Works flawlessly, no lag very stable
GTA3: No lag, but no sound (could be ROM problem)
Youtube HD Video works flawlessly
720p played with MX player, work flawlessly
Reading ebook.. Of course with no problem!
Display is really really good for its price(not as good as ipad, but good enough)
Wlan signal is a weaker than nomal phone/tablet
Battery is just OK for me, around 9 hours continuous usage.
Again, some part of touchpad is hit or miss, some might work on this touchpad, some might not work.
My particular touchpad has a haptic feedback problem, after sleep, it just disabled for no reason.
If you read a lot of ebook, touchpad might be a little bit too heavy, in that case BN nook is better.
But seriously, for this price point, its really really good stuff.

Also want to note, Plexapp works great. Can't say about emulator, but at this price point it is great. I have used it for kindle on an airplane, sitting on the tray it is fine. I have a regular Kindle for other reading.

Sound works but there is a driver issue or something that can cause it to not work. Usually a reboot will fix it.

Well I tried n64 emu Mario 64 works perfect ,but Mario kart 64 is lagging for me only 9fps for me...
Fpse works great also, reaches 90fps with frame limiter off,but most games resolution is awful

Just tested Zelda ocarina of time.. Works nice,not lagging. And I have no idea with resolution..

Yea touch pad is the best for that price the only thing around that price is the kindle and nook and they don't stand a chance with the touchpad

I didn't really know where else to turn apart from the XDA forums so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
Basically, I currently own a Acer Aspire 5734z laptop, but it's no good for gaming so I'm looking to upgrade but I'm completely oblivious to the terminology of PC specifications so I'm lost. Here are my current specs;
OS- Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
Processor- Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 @ 2.30GHz
RAM- 3gb
Video card- Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Pixel Shader version- 4.0, Vertex Shader version- 4.0, Dedicated Video RAM- 64 MB)
320gb hard-drive.
My current options are to upgrade my laptops video card (if possible) and upgrade my RAM to 4gb (My laptop will only support up to 4gb) or to buy a PC and use my 32" TV as a monitor. I'd rather buy a new PC if I can get a cheap enough deal (Under £300 would be perfect, the cheaper the better). I'd want to run a few higher-end games, even if its just on low quality, as long as it's playable I'll be happy. It'll probably be used to play games like Guild Wars 1+2, Diablo 3 (If possible), Starcraft II, Battlefield 3 etc.
Any ideas? What kind of specs on a PC should I look for? What graphic cards are useful for me and what ones aren't?
I'm also from the UK, and I'd prefer to buy in-store than to buy online as shipping is normally an expensive nightmare.

Your laptop video isn't upgradeable, your cpu and ram are way too weak to play the mentioned games as well. $300 PC no matter 300 pounds wouldn't likely ether. Your best bet is to build in stages if you need more help picking parts I can help.

$300 isn't enough to buy a pc for playing those games and in the laptop it would be difficult so you better be step by step and saving more money

I'm sure I have an old tower + monitor in the attic, I might dig that out and see what parts it has then use that a base for upgrading. But I remember it constantly crashing so there must of been something wrong with it (It would crash every 15 minutes which made it useless)

I'd want to use it for gaming so Ubuntu wouldn't be much use (As far as I'm aware most games aren't compatible with Ubuntu, or is that my stupidity shining?), I could reinstall XP on it.

No, afaik we don't have the underlying kernel support. This could be added in the future though. I have tried 2 adapters, couldn't get it to work on stock or cm11

Everything is possible if someone works hard enough to get it done! Right now the phone is not currently capable of this since it's not built in to the kernel.. But it can be done.

I'm actually using Airsync on DoubleTwist app to watch movies that are on my phone by sending it streaming to my DishTV Hopper box and it's a perfect picture too... I know this is not the type of streaming people have in mind but being able to send video's from my phone to the hopper is awesome since the TV is 60 inches lol..
The other thing is you can still use the entire phone while you're streaming something and it won't get interrupted which I like so I can answer questions like these on here and do other things while the movie plays.

Nice features there, but still not the same thing as MHL in which your entire screen is mirrored to the tv. Would LOVE to play my hardcore games with my Moga Pro from across the room. I've tried Airplay and Mirrorcast and BBQ Screen and various others to stream to my pc (rip :,( ) but it's so difficult without a powerful enough system to battle latency on those apps and the artifacting is atrocious no matter your data speeds on wifi or usb. Also it slows down the device trying to do too many things at once, not helping matters any.
If MHL was somehow pushed into a kernel (honestly not likely...I've done the research) it wouldnt be usable as our pins on the usb port aren't capable of pushing power out the cable for the hdmi signal.
I wish there was a much better app that would output the screen in a lossless format to a computer screen or some sort of dongle. But alas...

Right it's definitely not MHL that's why I said I know it's not the type of streaming people are looking for but it suits me for now.. On the other hand, getting MHL into the kernel is gonna be time consuming not to mention the phone doesn't really even have enough RAM anyways.. But still it 'can' be done.

That's what my initial thought was for mobile high-definition streaming it just need to translate pixels into hd quality picture which I think should be possible very well with 1gb. only thing I think of is when we try high quality games on these devices will fail.. In other words if anything apart from display which is consuming cpu or other resources will have some problem..
Hence wondering if we should try same or not...
No harm compiling 1 kernel.. I am really not an expert to compile same but if I get required resources I will definitely try this..

Well one could always create a swap to use the SD memory card as more RAM because you're definitely right that if you try to run anything else apart from the display like heavy memory usage games its certainly gonna be lagged as all hell or crash!

Would do no good. As I said it's not a kernel limitation, or even a kernel feature. It's hardware related. Technically speaking, every Android device is capable of using MHL...has been since Gingerbread afaik. But the problem comes in the sending of the signal through the usb port. Certain usb ports have a different pin-out specifically for sending enough power through the cable to the television as a digital signal. Most Samsung devices have this because they use very similar ports. But not alot of other brands support it. Sure, the higher end HTC devices do and the newer LG/Moto/etc, but we're not going to get it on the D510.
Also swap doesn't quite work the way you think. It doesn't physically add speed to your system just by having the partition and supported kernel/app (currently rhinstone is the only swappable kernel, use RamExpander for best results). It's not exactly adding 3gb of ram, it's adding cache space for the physical ram to dump to when memory runs out. It is a small increase in performance, well worthwhile actually, but not going to improve gaming or multitasking as well as you'd hope
Edit: forgot to mention each brand has a dedicated MHL application to manage the output, so even if it WAS a kernel feature (again, it's not) you would need to find the corresponding MHL.apk that would support our device
