[Q] system write protected - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to convert my at&t one m7 (running sense 6, android 4.4.2) to a google play edition. I've got S-off (via sunshine), root with supersu installed as a system app. (verified with root checker). Bootloader is unlocked (I have tampered message) and CWM touch installed. I've flashed Elemental X which says it disables HTC's write protection to system. I find myself unable to flash any rom. It can't mount system. I can't even fully wipe/factory reset with cwm since I don't have access. Everything I can find tells me that flashing an insecure kernel will give me access but I have no luck after flashing elemental x (also tried bulletproof). Any help would be appreciated.

So you have s-off and you want to convert. Why not just using a GPE ruu (like the 5.0.1 posted in the dev section) instead of messing with kernels and roms? Btw don't know why you need to have system write permission to do a conversion... It make no sense to me... you want to write something to a partition that will be overwritten when converting...?

That'll work? I'm not too familiar with htc specific hacking. Mind pointing me in the right direction?

CWM for HTC One Google Play Edition

Maybe it's a bit too early to ask, but since we don't yet have a separate forum for the Google Play edition of HTC One, I'm going to ask the question here.
According to HTC Blog, GP editions bootloader can be unlocked with "fastboot oem unlock" command, so all rosy here. Now the thing is will we need a new specific version of CWM just for the GP phone or can we use "recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.1-m7.img" on it?
More specifically for me, I DON'T plan to flash CWM onto the phone, I want to keep stock recovery to receive OTA without problems, but I do need root for some apps to work. My plan is to use "fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.3.1-m7.img" command and flash SuperSU. That would be my only use of CWM on GP phone. So we do I need to wait for the release of GP version of CWM or can I just use the ...m7.img, maybe even CWM version for Nexus 4?
We have to ask to see the first One GE Edition for the one for seeing which file and which guide we need to use to unlock the phone.
However, probably, the CWM can be used.

I have the same exact question that you asked. Did you manage to root without installing custom recovery. If yes, which CWM version did you use?
You can use the same CWM version as the regular One. However fastboot boot recovery does not work on hboot 1.54. So you need to flash CWM to root.

Well from what I read on other threads, it might be possible but they would need the dump from the Google Edition One that are being shipped now. They need bootloader, recovery, etc.
Sent from my One V using xda premium
The needed pieces have been acquired
working on a tutorial for conversion.

Soz Another Qustion
Soz just 2 more questions how do I change my phones CID and MID to the Google Edition? Following these instructions:
Installed Nammit1994's stock odexed GE ROM from http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2353033. This ROM is unaltered in any way, no root, no busybox, no nothing.
Then I rooted it with twrp's install root feature.
Next I installed the bootloader and recovery.
I also changed my CID to match the Google CID
My Phone is an AT&T model and shares the same MID as the google phone
Now my phone is in condition to accept an OTA. I think I can preserve root with ota rootkeeper, but I don't know for sure.
Thanks

[Q] how to get KitKat 4.4 for HTC one GPE rooted/clockworkmod

Hi;
I have rooted my HTC one GPE (from google) phone and installed clockworkmod recovery.
The day after i received a system update from Google for KitKat but couldn't install it; it failed updating.
How can i get the update again?
i tried manually downloading the KitKat from HTC site for my phone and install it as "Install from a zip" but it didn't work, claiming that i download m7 version while my phone is m7ul phone.
Any help? should i really be going through all the S-OFF stuff before?
Appreciate any links or help
Rami
if you flash the stock recovery image back to the device you should be able to re-check for the OTA and apply it - you can also search for the OTA.zip and then from clockwork you can try to sideload it.
sideloading didn't work
as i mentioned at my original post; installing the OTA.zip didn't work!
I have that same question lol, I cannot flash anything other than 4.2 from CWM. I have the new radio version it seems too. 4.4 finally loaded fine from OTA but it bootloops at welcome screen
I'll let you know if I find anything
You need to do a full conversion to GPE 4.3/4.4, and NOT while you are S-ON.. You will most likely run into issues!

[Q] Cyanogenmod installer - does it root etc?

This is probably a newbie question, but even though the HTC One is soooo nice there are some things I find difficult. I used to have a Samsung Galaxy S III Intl. which is incredibly easy to root etc. Now I really love my HTC One but the whole bootloader/S-off/root process looks very complicated. However, it seems the Cyanogenmod Installer can install Cyanogenmod without all those things. Does that mean I can just install Cyanogenmod with the installer and that takes care of all those things? And then maybe afterwards I can convert to a full Google Play Edition.

If you are planning to convert your phone to GPE without learning the basics of HTC phone, you'll probably get stuck somewhere in the process and it will be much more complicated from there to understand what is happening and to recover from this situation.
So if you are installing CM via the installer only to save time converting to GPE, this is worthless imo.
Converting to GPE will require S-OFF and probably to change MID and CID.
unlock bootloader
flash twrp custom recovery
root
s-off
change cid/mid if required
flash GPE

Thanks for your reply. Found this article so now I've unlocked the bootloader, flashed twrp and rooted. Now I'll try to obtain S-off...
Couldn't get S-off to work So now I'm on the GPE 4.3 ROM. It's downloaded the 4.4 update but it won't install. I'm not sure where to go from here - but go I must because stock 4.3 is kinda ugly

[Q] S-off with rooted HTC One M7 - HBOOT 1.57 S-on

Hello!
I've decided I want to turn my HTC One (International version) into a Google Play edition. I've watched a bunch of videos, and went for it. Everything went fine until the step where I should get S-off. I've tried quite a few tools, but just get an error that my version is not going to get S-off.
I have seen people been able to work around using CM11, but from what I've understood, you need S-off to write anything to /boot, which is where I presume CM11 would be flashed. So, am I missing anything important? Is there a workaround if my phone has HBOOT 1.57, and not S-off already? I hope someone can help me!
TL;DR: My phone is unlocked and rooted, but I can't get S-off using any of the most popular tools. My HBOOT is version 1.57.
I hope someone smarter than me is able to help me! If you need more information, please leave a reply and I'll get all the information I'm able to.
In advance, thanks!

No, you can flash cm11 with s-on. You have to have a custom recovery with which to do it, though. I don't know which tutorial you're using, but it should have a section where you flash the recovery after the bootloader is unlocked. If your bootloader is still locked, then... Are you rooted?
I'm pretty new to HTC, I just came off of samsung, and they seem straightforward and simple by comparison, but with s-off, it seems like there's more room for customization with HTC phones...
Anyway, I found that TWRP won't flash cm11, but Philz_touch will. If you're rooted, grab rashr off the play store and you can flash both of these recoveries right from your phone. I'd go with TWRP 2.6.3.0, though, since the latest didn't like my backups.
Then once those are installed, you boot into bootloader and volume down to Recovery and it'll pop up in a few seconds where you can take backups (<--DO THIS!) and flash new roms and kernels and such.

Have you tried Sunshine S-OFF, it will cost $25 but it is worth it. Once you get S-OFF you can change your CID & MID then flash the GPe RUU or ROM.
Thanks a lot for your replies!
I have actively tried figuring this out alongside reading for my exam today, and recently found and interesting option to work around S-on. My total goal is getting GPE Lollipop on my HTC, and I just now found a thread discussing using a backup from OPs phone. According to many users in the thread, they have been able to recover this backup and successfully run Lollipop with S-on. I did consider buying Sunshine, but due to finding the backup-option, I wanna try the free alternatives first. My goal is like I said running GPE, and I will most likely not install other roms on my phone.
My phone has an unlocked bootloader, custom recovery CWM v6.0.4.8, and my phone is rooted with SuperSU v2.37 at the moment. This might change some since I'm trying to recover a specific backup as my current tactic.
Your replies have definitely added to my understanding of the workarounds, and are much appreciated. If the backup-method don't work, I will try your methods!
PS: I posted in the backup-thread asking some questions. I'm posting my link here to string them both together in case someone else looks for an solution to the same problem I had.
