Messenger app; Receiving blurry/pixelated photos - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using the new messenger app and I noticed when a particular person sends me a picture it comes out extremely low quality where I can barely make anything out. I had that same person send a picture to a buddies G3 and it was crystal clear. Its like Messenger is downscaling his pics to me low res, don't get me wrong, I do receive good MMS pics through Messenger, but some are extremely bad. I also noticed that if I snap a picture with the camera app and send it they are fine and clear, but if I take a picture using the "in app" messenger camera my pictures come out exactly like the low quality images I talked about receiving above. Is this a messenger issue?
The reason this is such a big issue is because this is a work phone and I am trying to have employees take picture of their work writing documents and text them to me but I can't make out the writing. I am hoping not to have to switch SMS apps Thanks

Bump! I'm having the same issue and it's unacceptable! Did you find a solution?

I've noticed the download size shown prior to downloading the MMS is several times larger than the actual downloaded file

Same problem..

Are you guys using CM12 / 12.1? Known bug in CM for the pictures to be low quality, makes CM unusal to me.

[SOLVED] Higher Resolution contact pics from FB AND contact pics in google voice

Is this possible, the contacts pics are so low-res that during a call, when I look at the avatar it looks blurry.. Is there way to change this..
Only happens for contacts whose pics were dl'd from fb of course..
My regular contacts with pics from the gallery are fine
Edit: I found an app called 'facebook sync; from market it syncs your contacts info with their pics on facebook.. and it does this in higher resolution that the stock facebook sync method..
also it seems to have fixed the contact pics not showing up in google voice.. everything is smooth now
Yeah that's because the source material from Facebook for those contact pics is poor. I've experienced that problem. The only way to fix it would be to manually assign better pics to your contacts.
Re: Higher Resolution contact pics from FB?
when i changed to modaco desire port alpha 19 my fb contact pics got sharper.
Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
contact pics from fb are something small, like 100x100 pixels. on your phone, 100x100 is very small, so when it gets blown up, it looks pixelated. nothing you can do except manually assign photos.
Solved.........
Is it possible to edit the ROM so it picks up higher resolution instead of 100x100?

no. that resolution is assigned by facebook. it's the profile image size.

Rem-ics ux on 19001

Hey Guys,
Running the RemICS 1.3.2 with baseband KPL. This updated version of this ROM is really good especially since fixing issues with the camera etc.
One thing I have noticed:
I can send pictures and media via MMS and Whatsapp absolutely fine. Although I have a strange issue receiving. I will receive an MMS and be notified of receiving an MMS. I open the default messaging app but no picture, no option to view attachment and no picture downlaoded anywhere on phone although it has received the MMS. Using Whatsapp, I have a very similar issue, I will receive a picture in a conversation and I can see the thumbnail preview. Although clicking this or the 'Download' button appears to do nothing. BUT when I look within the phone or gallery, within the Whatsapp media folder is the file name of this picture ending in .jpg although showing no size (0kb) and it displays a blank thumbnail within the gallery.
It seem as this ROM as an 'issue' handling images to be downloaded via a messaging app. I have not checked other media or other apps. Could this be related to the 'old camera issue' in the older ROM versions?
It has nothing to do with my MMS, APN or NETWORK settings, I have plenty of 3G coverage, WIFI and have even tried downloading via 2G to no avail.
Is this a known fault with this ROM? Is this just my unit? Is there a fix or solution?
Please help because it is irritating me!
If no fix, I may have to change to another ROM. Can anyone recommend a slick looking ROM with good performance and excellent battery longevity?
***BUT I DO LOVE THIS ROM SO WOULD APPRECIATE A FIX***
Thanks

[Q] Using SHARE to send pictures via Messaging app

I've posted this question in the HTC ONE forum on AndroidCentral as well, but I haven't had any responses yet. I'd love to see if this is an HTC ONE related issue, or if it's possibly just an issue with my wife's phone specifically.
Any help or insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
http://forums.androidcentral.com/htc-one/271163-using-share-send-pictures-via-messaging-app.html
I picked up an HTC One for my wife yesterday and she tinkered with it all evening yesterday. One thing she noticed that I was unable to answer was sending pictures using the SHARE option. Sure, you can open up the default text messaging app and send a picture, but typically she'll share Facebook messages or share multiple photos from an app like QuickPic and then select MESSAGING to send the photos. Right now, it's forcing her to save the pictures, then open the messaging app and attach them.
I looked myself and noticed there is a very limited number of apps available under the SHARE option when you're trying to share an image from any app (Gallery, QuickPic, Facebook, etc). There does not seem to be a way of sharing images (single or multiple) directly from the image viewer or original app, you have to open the messenger app and then add them one by one.
I even tried downloading AndMade Share, but that showed the same limited list of apps to share with.
Am I missing something? I looked through the list of messaging settings, tried searching online here and on XDA, and couldn't find any mention of this issue. I'd rather not install a 3rd party messaging app to gain this ability, but if it's required then so be it.
As a side note, she's loving the phone overall. The camera is stellar and getting the phone for $169 at Costco was a bonus as well (even came with a free fitted transulucent plastic case, which was nice). The HTC included ear buds were also very nice. Overall, very impressed with the phone and included goodies.
in pic gallery go to share at the bottom it says more press that i get 11 options im not on facbook or twitter so i dont get them up i get messages mail gmail bluetooth dropbox and so on hope that helps

Thanks for the response. I'll take a look at her phone when she gets home tonight.
I tried that last night and the items I got were:
Send to AT&T Locker
Gmail
Email
Facebook
Picasa
Dropbox
and a few others.
I'll post a screen cap if it still isn't working.
Just seems odd that even with Andmade Share MESSAGES wasn't showing. Maybe I was just not seeing it in the list on the phone. That's entirely possible, as we had just got back into town last night when this occurred.

Looks like you can use Share to send one picture via the stock Gallery app, but no luck sharing with QuickPic (single or multiple selected photos) or Facebook to the stock messaging app.
Here are screen caps of the QuickPic SHARE options. Options are similar within Facebook as well.
Just an update:
I e-mailed the developer for QuickPic to mention the issue my wife was having with her HTC one. They responded that it's an issue with the HTC Messaging app. According to him, HTC limits which apps can share pictures with the messaging app.
Looks like the answer will be to use a non-stock messenger.
Same issue. I want to send memes from an app, but don't get the option unless I save to gallery. Third party messenger it is, I guess.

dots over an incoming calls contact picture

For some reason even though I've already reinstalled before via the factory reset, 3 times total now..
I still have dots on the pictures of my contacts but only during incoming calls. If I look at them in the contacts window, there is no problem and if I take a new picture and set it to an existing contact it goes away so its only on existing contacts, the ones that are imported when adding my Google account.
Does anybody else have this problem?
Check here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41088281
best solution is change your contact to gmail account (no more on phone) and change the contact pictures that u want with pictures from gallery for one time (i know its sucks).... also if u have some of ur contact linked to facebook, that should update ur friend pictures without dots
It is because the quality of the pictures in google contacts is low (but google changed the picture limitation for contacts).
it's intentional I thought

dots on the call incoming photos are basically because the picture quality of the contact photos you have are low. i suggest you sync with facebook or something that will give higher quality photos. i dont think gmail or google contacts saves pictures in high quality mode. i actually had to use an app to sync my facebook photos to my google account previously. but now with sense5 it just pulls the photos straight from facebook into the sense framework.
Yes I know that Google just recently upgraded to high quality pictures on Gmail and or Google contacts but I still wasn't sure if the dots were there to try to suggest you can make a better quality picture and if so I would prefer just a message saying 'Hey you can now make/use better quality pictures'.
I don't use Facebook and my contacts' pictures are not stored on the phone.
I guess the dots over contact pictures during calls is their way of saying: guess what! you can now put a better picture in here!
I was actually having the same question!
I had an old photo of my bud hooked up with my Google Account... That photo had black dots all over the place :s
I then was manually linking anything HTC may have missed, and as soon as a higher res photo was available, black dots went away and photo changed.
Still don't know why they're there. Maybe it is because of the low quality image, but could definitely be something else.
I too thought it was intentional!

Live message, does this mean the native messaging app can now send GIFs?

I had to use 3rd party messaging apps like Textra to be able to send GIFs, but now it seems that since the stock messaging app utilizes Live Messages by converting them into GIFs, we can now send GIFs in general without size limits. Can anyone confirm this? I would love to be able to take full advantage of Live Messages and sending random GIFs without size limits using just the native messaging app.
Lol that was the first thing I thought of as well during the conference

I just watched a Youtube video where the guy explained that with Live Message you can create a message by writing/drawing with the S-Pen and it converts it to a standardized GIF so any phone can see the animation. It's not like Textra where they have a dedicated link to grab GIFs and attach to your text.
Check this video out:

i've been playing with Live Message on my Note FE with Hangouts; when done, i have to "share the GIF" as a picture versus sending right away to the person i'm texting. seems like a nice feature, not sure how often i would use it tho.
So now it looks like they updated their native messaging app able to send up to 10mb size on the Galaxy s8 series, not sure about lower models. Unfortunately, when using third party keyboards on the native messaging app, the GIFs are still sent as a link unless you download and save them to your phone and send it as an attachment. This is will probably be the same for the Note 8 as well. Why cant they just embed it like the rest? oh well....baby steps I guess. =/
No live messages

This Sucks I got my Note 8 two days ago and you will have to us Textra or another app to send Live Messages. So my question is why include the feature that you can't use with downloading another app on the NOTE 8?
I have the unlocked version of the Note 8 and just sent a live message using the stock messaging app just fine.

Tetra won't compress the image like stock will. In Textra I tried to make an image and it was 9mb, system wouldnt send. Used stock app and it compressed same image to 600kb and sent fine. Tetra or any other app needs to make that adjustment and it doesn't.
I have seen weird behavior with live messages and the stock messaging app. It will play an animation, but often it is truncated, and doesn't run at the proper speed when using the "share" function of live messages. I haven't tried saving them and sending it via an attachment or something else.
Likely something to do with the compression mentioned above I would think.

If your sending to anyone who doesn't have a Samsung device on the same carrier as you it compresses the hell out of the message..... Of you send to someone with a Samsung device on the same carrier it uses Samsung's "RCS" and doesn't compresses so like me and my dad send each other cool fully animated ones... But the ones I send to my fiance's iPhone get all pixelated and choppy.... But it's better than nothing. On my s8 any gif over 1mb would fail. Now it just compresses them for me. I'd rather have that than trying to find another app all the time.

Can't you go into settings, and change image size from best available to original? So the images will not be compressed.

I read that if you change the MMS setting in Textra from System to Legacy Live Messages will send. Lots of positive feedback too but it does not work for me on my AT&T N8. Works fine in stock message app and people who received the GIF say it looks fine. They are all iPhone users. I prefer to use Textra. Gifs also send in Yappy SMS app.

Those settings are only for "chat" meaning other ppl with a Samsung phone on the same carrier as you if I'm not mistaken. Because mine is on original and it's the same outcome as I stated before.
I was able to attach the Live Message GIF to Textra once already in the app, then sending to my wife and daughter who also use Textra was fine. Once or twice it came back as failed, but after a retry, it sent. But I really hate that the native messaging app doesn't allow for adding random animated GIFs like it does in Textra.
While I have only used Live Messages on Twitter (actual tweets, not direct messages), and know it can be accessed from the stock Samsung keyboard (which I hate) and Air Command, I believe they can only be sent in apps that allow animated GIF files to be sent. Most likely, with Samsung's stock messaging app, they probably are being sent as MMS messages, unless there's that extended SMS technology (I forgot the actual name), but I'm not sure if that's true because I don't think the carrier I'm on supports that.

I think Gboard can do that through its blue suggestions, but can't really remember because I have that disabled, and I doubt the Samsung keyboard supports that. Even then, I don't like the stock Samsung touch keyboard, for similar reasons to why i have a "stock Android" theme applied on mine.
