[Q] Lollipop - DPI play store fix? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have changed the DPI because stock DPI is comically large as usual. However, now certain apps don't appear in the play store
In the past (KK/JB) there have been fixes available, such as flashing the multi dpi play store from XDA. Does anyone know of a fix that works for Lollipop?
Thanks

I was about to ask the same thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would using a ROM to change the density work? Its a temporary solution if it does

Which apps? If they aren't showing up in the play store, I hope it's because they haven't been updated in a long time. (Otherwise, the developers need to recognize the needs for flexible densities.)
As for a way to deal with it: xposed isn't an option at this time, so the easiest method would be to change your density to something that makes the playstore app happy, reboot, download the app, and then put your density back.

Im not sure of a fix, but specific DPIs work well with no compatibility. I run 380 dpi and all apps are available and work perfectly. That DPI puts the device into "tablet mode"

http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.htmlUse multiples of 80 ....ie note 4 is 640 nexus 6 is 560 and note 3 was 480 etc and so forth

Swiftkey X at 160 DPI

I have been running SwiftKey Tablet X on my Nook with CM7 for awhile without issue but on the newest nightlies the keyboard is huge. It looks normal at 161. Does anyone know if there is a way to correct this and while leaving the DPI setting to 160?
Thanks.

Nope, it's always been like that at 160. Takes up probably a third of the screen as I recall at that DPI, less than a quarter at 161. This isn't new.
How to correct it? Besides setting the DPI to 161? If you don't do any market clear data stuff you can set it back to 161, restart Android or reboot the tablet entirely, and if you need to later for market reasons, set it to 160, do the market data reset, then back to 161.
There are apps in the market which might let you set it on the fly, never tried them.

I thought that is how SwiftKey tablet x was always intended to look like. I love how big and easy it is to use. And number pad in the center now shows up in landscape mode along with fully functional space keys. The change to an lcd density of 160 made this keyboard awesome. If You miss the way it was previously displayed then use SwiftKey x for the smartphone.
I have both and I prefer SwiftKey tablet x this away. If you saw the screen shots of it running on the galaxy tab 7", and you would realize that it was always intended to run this way. So embrase it, and use it and love it.

Why the F*** are there no compatable apps for this phone?

Yes, I know I can use the build.prop trick to download files that "aren't compatable" even tho they indeed ARE compatable. My question is why is the market not letting me download a majority of new apps??

Did you alter your DPI setting?
Im having this same issue. I recently purchased Lookout so i could use all of its features and there is an update that is available on the apps web page. I got the same thing saying that it was not compatable with my device. Ive gotten this for a few others, a theme for go launcher ex and slacker radio
Hey man just realized somthing. Went to download instagram and it said it wasnt compatible. But if you go under google play store on desktop or browser you can install from there and have it install directly to phone. worked for me, hope u can get all the apps you needed to download now. Not sure why its doing this but it worked for me! good luck!
Dpi settings? Do tell...? I alerted my build prop to say I was a nexus s, downloaded modern warfare then reverted back.i'm not familiar with dpi

A lot of apps won't install in the event that you use a custom DPI setting. People commonly reduce the DPI value from 240 DPI to 200 DPI in order to make everything on the screen be rendered smaller. The problem is that Android market is expecting all devices to have 120, 160, 240, or 320DPI. An app developer has to go out of their way to support make the market understand that their apps support arbitrary DPI values (it's trivial, but most don't know how to do it).
What's funny is that most all apps will *run* just fine at 200DPI, but the market won't let you install them.
Where can I change my dpi?

I am going to take a stab that you changed your resolution. For some reason the market won't let you install if your resolution is not default. I guess it is just meant to be a sanity check.
If this is the case, you will need to reset your resolution (I recommend ROM Toolbox) and then go into settings and wipe your market (play store) cash and reboot. I think the default is 240, but that could differ from device to device. I haven't checked what it is for droid 4. It was 240 for droid 2.
Pain in the dairy air because I do like custom resolutions. It just got so tiresome I finally just left it default. Would be cool to find a way to fool it some how.

The DPI for Droid 4 is 240 at stock. I have the same issue and had moved my DPI to 200. Most apps were fine and then prior to the release of the update (which I have not installed yet) the market started to not allow me access to apps which I had either previously had installed or wanted to that I know are supported. I will attempt switching the DPI back to 240 and wiping and will post my success/failure on here shortly.
UPDATE: - Restored stock DPI of 240 with Rom Toolbox. Rebooted. Opened Application Management in Settings. Wiped Cache and Date. Reloaded Market. Apps install/work fine.

Different utils make it easy, rom toolbox is my fav. Worth the couple $$

I also suggest Rom Toolbox. It is the easiest and most comprehensive utility for root users.

The market and apps support the android stock dpi values i.e. 320, 240 and 160
So if you want to buy or install any app through the market change to the stock dpi's and then buy/install and revert to the dpi of your choice. I haven't known a single app which can help in getting this achieved without doing the above procedure. If you get to know let me also know
Cheers!!
lcd density modder pro has a market fix. Guaranteed (90%) to fix market issues. But do not use it to change densities (on aosp/aopk roms). It might give you bootloops (well atleast it happened to me)
market unlocker is a load of bull
thanks for all the info =]

HI,
i found this . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631070 you can try on this

Play store apps now showing device not compatible

Yesterday I got my Nexus and began installing play store apps. After I got many of my apps installed I noticed that some apps were coming up with "Your device isn't compatible with this version" and I wasn't able to download them. I went back and looked at some apps I had already installed such as Facebook for android and even that shows the same message now even though I was able to install it previously. I am disallowed in both the play store app as well as the web site from installing these apps so it is clearly something stored on play about my device. Is anyone else seeing this? Try the following apps
Facebook for Android
Firefox
My Tracks
Evernote
This list could go on.

I guess I should add that I am rooted and I made the following change to my build.prop file in order to get the tablet view.
- ro.sf.lcd_density=213
+ ro.sf.lcd_density=175
I guess I will try switching the density back and see if that makes a difference.
This is a common issue after you changed the LCD density, and unfortunately, there is no real solution (that I know of).
To get around this, revert back to the native density of 213. Clear cache of Play store. All apps should be compatible as stock. You can try to go back the lower the density again. Without clearing cache of the Play store this time, you may get lucky that the Play store may *think* it is still under the default LCD density.

Many of my GSII apps show as incompatible. No root or anything done to N7 yet. I did get FB to work though.
Thank you all for the replies. When I made the dpi changes the Play Store did operate as normal for some time. I have now switched my dpi back and cleared cache and data for Play Store. Still not working properly at this point, but I will keep you posted. Thanks for the heads up!
For future reference I found this post that talks about Tablet UI and the aforementioned Play Store issue.

Yes, I have no problem launching those apps. It sounds like its just a Play Store incompatibility. Some others have reported using a dpi of 160 and not having Play Store issues, but like I said, my issue showed up a couple hours after the fact. And having changed it back to the default, my Play Store issues have not yet gone away.
After changing the settings back, force stopping play store, clearing cache and data, then rebooting, I was able to get the play store behaving properly again. But I HATE the phone UI. So I am tempted to change it back once I get the apps I want. I may give 160 a shot rather than 175.

Glad to hear that it worked.
I have been using DPI of 160 since yesterday. Play store is still behaving normally so far. Fingers crossed.
Let us know how it turned out for you at 160.
Since I've had my device rooted I have had a lot of apps on the plays store which says incompatible with your device, can someone e please help, thank you.
Why not just follow the directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780970
And skip changing the DPI.
Ain't there another way without patching it, that is long a and I don't want to mess up my nexus 7

Hi,
To change your LCD density but avoid apps incompatibility, set your density back to 213.
Now, create a file in /data/local.prop and type in it :
qemu.sf.lcd_density=160
You can change the density to whatever you want, save and reboot
Please press thanks if I helped you

Google Play - unsupported device

Hey everyone, i have this problem with the Google Play store which is bugging me.
I've recently reinstalled Temasek 135.3 and found that apps i had before are now giving me a "unsupported device" error.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
this is usually the case when you change your display density.
try to clean the market settings (from apps or using titanium backup)
if that doesn't work, edit your build.prop so that the device name is something more generic/supported like galaxy s. for this method i suggest you google the exact steps.
good luck

Very true, i did change the LCD density from 240 to 210. I tried setting it back to it's default and rebooted... that didn't work.
I even tried clearing the cache and data to the Play Store and rebooted....still no avail....
...but thanks for the heads up, at least i now know where to start looking.
Actually, i think i may have found a thread to help me out, which refers to an app called LCD Density Modder.
I'll let you know when i get a chance to try it....
...problem SOLVED!
and feeling kinna silly again.... thanks!
