Question for all the vets here.....Im coming from an iPhone so Im obviously familiar with a different way of doing things.
Im trying to figure out how the file structure works within Android. Im mostly referring to media files and where/how they are stored and accessed. Im used to everything being stored inside my "camera roll" or whatever its called in a iphone. It would store all videos, photos, screen shots, downloaded images, everthing but music.
Now with Android it appears everything is kind of all over the place. Pictures are in Google Photos and are also accessible from the camera app. Screen shots and downloaded pictures are also stored in Google Photos yet aren't accessible from the camera app? Videos are all over the place. Vids I record are in Google Photos and accessible from the camera app. Videos I download are in the downloads folder.
Seems like everything is kind of spread out and a mess/not easily accessible. Am I doing something wrong?
Then that brings me to other files like documents. I've downloaded excel files from email and click save to drive and then they don't show up in my google drive. I access them in sheets. Then tried saving to device, no clue where those are saved to/accessible from.
Basically the whole file management system is a bit confusing to me. Hopefully someone can help clear things up for me. I know I can download a file management app and access everything from their respective folders which is fine. But Im more concerned with where everything is stored/accessed from an app standpoint.
Thanks for the help if you read that whole mess!!!

Gallery, root explorer, and most pictures always end up in Pictures or DCIM/Camera.
the iPhone file structure isn't that much better when you jailbreak, either. on my iPad it works the same way and downloads from the net go into a weird temp folder.
Anyways, you need to get an external app to view stuff really well. Google stuff doesn't ever really work well for me, I would get office suite.

I love Dropbox, but I use it mainly for photos.
Unfortunately it seems like the droobox app doesn't show thumbnails for my photos which makes it very hard to navigate.
Anyone know a seamless solution to this (not including going through the Dropbox webssite)?
The gallery will show them also only after you downloaded. Maybe you have to wait for an update from Dropbox? I think the reason is that as long as you have not downloaded them Dropbox wants to preserve memory/space on your phone and only shows basic info. If the devs realize the tablet market is increasing with devices offering more memory and computing power they might offer a more "Explorer-like" UI.
Dropbox on iOS has 2 features that I know of Android version doesn't, one is the thumbnails and the other is password lock. both were working on the ipad. Why the hell are they different I have no clue.
While I do use dropbox for a lot of things. I prefer using Picasa if I want to manipulate my pictures. being able to sync easily from my desktop and having access to the pics in the gallery on the xoom is pretty awesome. That is just my opinion. I paid $5 to have 20gb for a year from google. I hated to have to move the files to dropbox since picasa will detect new photos or changes and sync them without me thinking about it.
I like them both but I find dropbox better for files and with Quick Office HD integration it is awesome for that.

I use picasa for my normal photos but for patient photos that I want to update on both my computer and xoom dropbox seems like a better option. Also allows me to organize those patient photos into folder albums...
So I loaded Serendipity today. Master cleared and everything. So I was really surprised to find old pictures on my phone when I opened the gallery app. And strangely it wouldn't let me delete them. Hmm. So I looked in the sd folders, dcim etc. Cannot find these pics anywhere! The gallery app did tell me the file names So I loaded up root explorer and ran a search... NOTHING!
These pics show in my gallery but I can't find the files anywhere. Where are they hiding?

Went into the stetting, manage applications, to the gallery app and hit clear data, and these strange photos vanished! Still don't know where they were. but they are gone now. Would loveto hear where they were stored if anyone knows...
Spoke too soon! So after a reboot, the folder of pics comes back! If I clear the gallery app's data, it vanishes again, but returns after every reboot. Can anyone help with this?
Is it a stack of thumbnails (separate folder path) or viewable image files? If you have external SD maybe browse it on a PC.
It still there with no external SD, and I can't find it from the PC or root explorer.
You, know, I have a blog, and these all seem to be photos on my blog. And blogger seems to be hooked to Picasa Web albums. So I'm thinking Gallery pulls pulls the contents of my Picasa Web album down to the phone... could this be? Can it be stopped?

If you have them linked then yes that is where they are comming from and why they keep comming back. The only way to stop it would be to but a no media file in the target folder, back draw is that the file will hide it from all Android apps that look for media
Hi everyone; wondering if anybody else is experiencing this problem (if it's even a problem, I'm not sure).
As far as I know, when I go into my stock Gallery app and navigate to my PicasaWeb folder, I should be able to view any videos I have in my PicasaWeb; I can see the different folders I have in there, but when I go into a folder, none of the videos actually show up. I know I have several videos in two separate folders, and I can access them normally through the web interface as well as Google+. Is there something I can do to be able to play my PicasaWeb videos through the stock Gallery app?
Any information provided would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much,
-GB

Just confirming that I dont' have my videos in Gallery via PicasaWeb either. This probably has something to do with the fact that you can't download videos that you've uploaded from PicasaWeb. I think that's what the gallery does, is downloads available content, and since videos aren't actually available for download, they don't show as an option to view
Hey can anyone recommend good software for managing media? I particularly want to transfer photos easily. I have a program for music, but I'm open to recommendations. I know that Samsung has Kies and Sony has Media Go, both are useful. Does Motorola have any official media software?

Try AirDroid. The transfer is over wifi and you can transfer almost everything. Besides it is a file manager, ftp server, system manager...
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm really looking for PC/laptop software, I find it really easy to manage media from there. I see Songbird will only connect in Mass Storage Mode and Songbird is OK for music but not pictures. I'll find something eventually!

Is Motorola Motocast acceptable http://www.mymotocast.com/download
Hi, that software looks PERFECT. I tried it with the RAZR i and it won't set up at all. I have everything installed but cannot manage media let alone sync anything. Is this software compatible with the RAZR i?

Well according to the download on Play it says not.
You mentioned Medio Go so presumably you also use it? You can copy your photos etc in to Media Go and simply select your folder/s from there and select “Add to” Your phone will then show up as “Unnamed device” with the sub-options of moving them to internal or external memory, or you can simply transfer them directly from your pictures folder. No offence intended but I don’t see the problem.
This is my first Motorola (and also Android) phone, but they sure don’t seem too concerned about providing PC media management.
How about google Picasa?
No worries, I get it; if you have use for something, you understand, if you don't need something, you won't understand. A few of my other devices (Apple and Sony) allow for quick and automatic movement of media from A to B or vice versa just by connecting the devices, I'm looking for the same now. I've been using the 10 camera shot per second feature and the photos are really stacking up. Drag and drop is a bit too 1990s for me. I've uninstalled Media Go now, I thought it didn't even recognise non-Sony devices? I'll give it a go then, if you say it appears.
True about Motorola and PC management, everywhere related to my phone it directs me to Motocast. I emailed them and they said the RAZR i is not compatible. Nevermind, I'll find something.
All I’m saying is that you can transfer files/folders via Media Go using “Add to” on right-clicking in Windows.
Whether this is the functionality you’re actually looking for I’m not sure but it works for me. I’ve used it to transfer a couple of albums and a number of tracks over (although my Walkman is my main portable music source), and after reading your thread I thought I’d see how it works with photos and no problems.
Just tried it out with iTunes but there doesn’t seem to be an obvious way of doing the same: there may be,but I can’t be bothered to find out!
Thanks buddy, I appreciate your help.
For music, if you do like iTunes, I have a recommendation. There is an app called iSyncr which allows you to copy any lists in your iTunes directly to your phone. If you use their Rocket Player to use the music, it will update your playcounts etc. Music at least, I've got covered! :good:
Hi there,
I am new to this forum and this is my first time posting! I have the ATT samsung galaxy S5 and I am rooted but running the stock ROM. I am relatively new to android and this is my first one after three years of having iphones. Anyway, I just got a 32gb microSD card but I am having some problems making it work with the camera. Before I put the SD card in, I had several folders in my camera, such as videos, camera, screenshots, snapchat, transferred from my iphone, etc... When I transferred from my iphone, a lot of the pictures were out of order but I learned to deal with it. When I put my SD card in, all of the folders mushed together with all my videos on the top and everything out of order. Now I just have one folder called externalSDcard and one called "camera" where new pictures are stored and one called picassa. Im not even sure if they are folders or albums! How do I restore everything to how it was before but keep it all on the SD card?
HELP!
Nothing? Really?
Really the only thing you can do I believe is put the pics on your computer and then format your SD card then put them back on in their appropriate folder. Pics go in the pictures folder and mpegs go in movies folder. Hope you figure it out.

Android will scan your phone for media files and will show all in the gallery. Now in the gallery you can create albums then drag and drop pictuers or videos into them. Also the camera folder must reside in the DCIM folder.

Exactly, the file structure on your SD card hasn't changed, but gallery app is organizing them the way it wants. What's even better is if you are storing camera pictures on SD card after having stored some on internal memory, now you have two "Camera" items shown in your gallery.
Picasa, by the way, is any pictures you've stored in picasaweb (which may be "none").
You might find a different picture viewing app more to your liking. I've always liked quickpic and now it supports viewing picasa pics as well, which was one of the only reasons to use the stock Gallery. And it's free.
The only remaining reason I have to use the stock Gallery is for those "shot & more" pictures I still want to edit (but that comes with a big bug of its own).
Thanks
Thanks so much for your help! I think I am getting things sorted out. For some reason though when I move the picture around or make any kind of changes, it changes the date from the day it was taken to when I last changed the location. I think that is why all the videos are on the top. Is there anyway to change that back? Also Im not a big fan of the gallery app so I think I'll try quickpick! Ill let you know how it goes!
