Q&A for TF701 Root
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for TF701 Root. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

Help with root?
Nothing changed. You still have to unlock the bootloader, flash CWM from here: http://droidbasement.com/db-blog/?p=3568, then flash SuperSU in recovery if you want to stay on stock or flash CROMi-X 7.0.3, CM11 or the AOKP rom from the development section.
pershoot is working on a CM12 Lollipop port which should be out within a few weeks - maybe

I have the same issue. The problem is unlocking the bootloader, as the Asus unlocker software doesn't work on 4.4.2. I guess downgrading is the only option, but so far no luck with finding instructions on how to do that... anyone?

The Asus unlocker does work on the latest version 4.4.4 or what ever it is (i don't remember) the website just wasn't updated.
You just need to keep trying until it recognizes.

Hmmm, that's good to know. Just to be sure, there's someone who's reportedly managed to do this? I've tried 20+ times without success.
edit. Let me rephrase, +100 times is more correct.
edit2. I tried for the 112th time, and this time IT WORKED! Thanks for the info. I don't know if it had any effect or if this was purely a hazard, but this time I had the dock on...
The dock would have been purely luck as it doesn't always come with one stock (depends on which country you buy it) and you don't require the dock for the unlock.
Just glad that it eventually worked for you.
bit worried
i had same problem with unlocking bootloader, but asus helped. they said, that because of all my repairs, something changed in their database and their unlocking app cant read this devcice properly. so they decided to unlock my tablet remote, from their development center, and i'll be free to root in a few days.
But i'm worried because of my 4.4 (11.4.1.30.)
is there anyone who rooted it with 11.4.1.30?
Wow! Remote unlocking? That's a first! Can't wait to see if they actually do it (and I wonder how!).
Once unlocked you can flash CWM and then SuperSU in CWM if root is all you want.
Will this work on 4.4.2 on the TF701? Can someone on 4.4.2 (11.4.1.30) try this?

help on tf701t root
Hi everyone,
'm currently trying to root my asus tf701t transformer and managed to unlock the decide and run bootloader. I'm stuck on installing recovery.img. I have moved the recovery.img file to my microSD card and the internal drive, launched adb fastboot and set it to bootloader. everytime i attempt to flash it, it says "error: cannot load recovery.img". have I put the recovery file in the correct place or have I done something wrong? i'm tearing my hair out trying to get past this stage!

The recovery . img goes on your PC, not your tablet. Your PC needs to find it to flash it to the tablet
To be specific, the img needs to be in the same folder as your fastboot.exe.
On your PC.
If that doesn't work you may not have the fastboot drivers installed.
What does <fastboot devices> return?
Post screenshots of your cmd window
You can also use flash tool on your PC to make things easier
Sent from my 2013023 using XDA Free mobile app
solved it. i knew i was doing something stupid. thank you very much!
Cannot boot twrp recovery
Ok,
First post and first attempt at rooting. Hope I don't screw it up... Too much.
I am trying to root my tf701 with zombi-pop, but can't get twrp to run.
Tried it with the recovery in the internal storage or in the same folder as fastboot.exe on my pc.
The tablet is unlocked and on latest firmware 11.4.1.30 ww sku.
When i get to the "fastboot boot 701_twrp_2870.img" stage on my pc I lose contact with the tablet. the cmd just hangs on "waiting for device".
I try typing "fastboot devices" and nothing shows up.
I have attempted numerous times, always with the same result.
Any help would be appreciated
Update - Fastboot driver wasn't recognised
I found a universal driver that fixed it.
I can't post the link as I'm a noob and thus not allowed, but I found it pretty easily once I started looking for universal adb drivers.
Hey, all. I've found a problem with my tf701 running CM 12.1. I have been using Webroot Backup & Sync to sync files on my external sd card (Samsung 64gb class 10 Micro SD). Since rooting the device I am unable to get webroot to locate my external storage.
Any suggestions would be great.
Hi Guys!
I've been installing a new ROM for my TF701T using the cromi-x ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf701/development/rom-t2839030/page78)
everything is looking peachy keen except I have lost root access. Do I need to rerun the root installation instructions steps or is it something else?

How did you loose root??? It's build into the rom! How do you know that you lost root?
Open the SuperSU app and update the binary. What does it say?

Okay so, since I'm sort of new, I wanted to ask a few questions:
1. Is it possible to root xperia x8 with manufacturing date 11w48? At least at 95% chance. I'm a bit scared of the bricking part...
2. If it is possible, what kind of "ROM" (if I understood correctly) should I get?
3. If I get hard bricked/soft bricked what's the chance my phone will be still usable.
That's about it. Please don't rage at me for "OMG USE SEARCH BUTTON" type of thing.
I have tried doing it but no results found. Just threads and posts of people updating their.. ROMs I gues? Correct me if I typed anything wrong there.
But yeah, help would be appreciated. Thanks!

1. You can safely root your x8 regardless of when it is manufactured, you will not brick it
2. You have 11w48 so it is very risky to unlock your bootloader, i suggest you flash ROMS that is for stock
3. If you get soft bricked you can flash the stock firmware back using flashtool or SEUS, if it is a hard brick, you need to go to the nearest Service center or use a JTAG
Swyped via Tapatalk 2
Thanks a whole bunch. I thought I cannot root because of my manufacturer date. But what is a flash ROM tho?

you can root your phone. but you can't unlock bl.
when you root your phone, you cam install cwm recovery. simply dl a rom for stock kernel and go to recovery and install(flash) the rom. remember to check the instructions first.
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
All what I found until today was that if I cannot unlock BL I cannot install CWM recovery.
Maybe it is related to model - mine is Sony Xperia J. Y2012.
There is no fastboot available.
Am I wrong, can I have CWM, nandroid backup etc on stock ROM as only such one I may flash ?

this is for x8. not sure how it works on J. but yeah we don't havt fastboot either. but we can install cwm even with a locked bl. again that's for se x8.
edit: my advice is go to your phone's subforum. you'll get your answers there.
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
Thank you. I understand that lot of things is device dependent but thought there are non-breakable rules, like gravity,
and what is possible to do under certain circumstances was one of them.
Need walk through XDA forum once more, maybe there is a hope.

there probably are a few unbreakable rules, but not being familiar with your device i can't guarantee that it's safe or it would work.
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
Despite lot of reading I still am missing knowledge.
Question is:
What is fastboot ?
I found more than one definition of it and compiled into my own.
1.
Of course fastboot.exe is Windows binary (part of flashtool pack) which does certain type of work.
This is not what we are interested in.
2.
I concluded that:
- fastboot is one of modes into what android device can wake up. Just like linux can boot in different ways or Windows into single mode.
- this feature is encoded into boot.img, it is not separate android application.
- boot.img will work only with related kernel.img. They are like love and marriage (which is like horse and carriage - Bundy's).
- Sony sometimes disables stock boot.img to boot into this mode then without replacing boot .img it is impossible.
More comments ?
Fastboot is protocol used to update the flash filesystem in Android devices from a host over USB. It allows flashing of unsigned partition images.
Just because i don't doesn't mean i can't.
Okay, I got one more last question. Is this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=906195&nocache=1 okay to use for rooting? I'm still trying to find the LATEST safe ones =/ I wonder if this one is okay.
Um, I tried that one it didn't work. It said some stuff are missing, then it exited randomly etc.. Can someone give me a link or a short/long guide which I can use that's latest? I do have some X8 drivers in a .zip file but no idea how to install them. Thanks in advance.

Well it's a little early for Christmas... but here is a special gift. This will allow the bootloader to load things from boot or recovery without them needing to be patched. This is not a full unlock and will not enable fastboot boot or fastboot flash. Obviously this will only work if you are rooted.
As usual, this WILL void your warranty and I am NOT responsible for anything you do with this. Using this tool won't brick your Fire TV, but doing stupid things afterwards might. I will stress here that flashing something bad to boot is a guaranteed way to brick because if the kernel can't boot you have no way to get back to recovery. For testing kernels, it's best to flash recovery to the boot partition and the new kernel to test to the recovery partition.
To use:
Downgrade: You must first downgrade to 51.1.0.2. If you already have CWM installed, you can skip this.
adb push aftv-unlock /data/local/tmp/
adb shell
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/aftv-unlock
su
/data/local/tmp/aftv-unlock unlock
Afterwards you should see this message:
Code:
Attempting to unlock...
All done!
If not, something went wrong. If for whatever reason you want to relock the bootloader, you can use this command:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/aftv-unlock lock
You can download it here.
WOW, just WOW, awesome work rbox!
I was definitely not expecting this.

Rbox do you know if the bootloader can boot from usb?
Does this require a minimal CWM version of yours?
I installed your Recovery (CWM) - on all 4 of my AFTVs - when you first released it ..
I've not had any reason to upgrade to the latest versions.... I'm just using the heck outta the AFTV as it is built, with all the nice rooted options. I really don't need anything else yet, so ...
with that said " can I just install this unlock-lock feature? "
Truly amazing. Can't wait for full fledged android on this.
Nice to see this, but it doesn't help much when you have a Fire TV with a non-rootable firmware.

The bootloader will only boot from the boot partition or the recovery partition on the mmc. But I'm working on a boot menu that will allow you to easily boot additional kernels which can then load your os from wherever you want.

Yes. This is independent of anything. The only dependence is the latest version of CWM requires it.
I installed ccm when you first released it then upgraded to the latest firmware the other night. Thanks a lot btw! But, can I assume (as a novice) this is not something I need to do right now. What I mean is is this just for people that want to experiment with new kernels or is there some advantage I'm missing? Thanks again and sorry if my question is a little too basic for this thread. I'm just genuinely curious.

If you don't care about updating your CWM version, or using any of the other cool things I'll release in the future that needs it, then no. You don't need to do this.
Thanks for the response. I did, in fact just update cwm and am running your latest fw update. I guess "need" isn't the right word. But if I unlock it tonight the cool stuff is still forthcoming.
Sorry just 2 questions:
1. Unlocking and keeping it unlocked indefinetly is ok?
And here's one that s on a slightly different subject...
2. I noticed updating with your fw saves my settings. Is there a safe way to factory restore using cwm without the risk of losing root?
That's actually the one I'm most interested in now. My aftv has been having issues that are hard to troubleshoot. An option to factory restore would be great. I mostly use it for xbmc so the only thing I care about losing is root. Thanks.

Of course keeping it locked is fine... i wouldn't have released the tool if it wasn't.
As I've stated in MANY OTHER THREADS... factory reset in CWM is perfectly fine and has nothing to do with root.

Nothing that people couldn't already do with my old CWM. Custom ROMs and whatnot has been possible for a while. This just makes things a little easier because kernels don't need to be patched.
Yea! Install failed yesterday. I've had SU problems I think. Couldn't get the # prompt. Reinstalled latest ROM and SL'd SU from the store. The Unlock finally took. Thanks.
nice, thanks rbox, you rock.
Sorry but I'm a total rookie here. I first started screwing around with my stock Nexus 6 by rooting. Then somehow I ended up with TWRP installed (or whatever) on my phone. Today I received notification that 5.0.1 OTA was available and when I click install it just went into TWRP and wouldn't let me install the update. For some reason I messed with TWRP and erased everything. Now I'm stuck with a brick.
Oh an to boot I can't get Android SDK running on my computer because of JVM or something.
Can anyone help? I just want to go back to out of the box stock and start over if that's possible. No TWRP or rooting necessary for me after this episode.
Thanks so much in advance for the assistance (please use small words and short sentences). Yes, I've tried searching like crazy and can't find anything that just step by step instructs me how to get back to stock.

Try wugfresh's nexus toolkit 2.0.search xda and download to your pc.
Sorry I should've mentioned - I'm on a Mac, not a PC.
Nevermind - fixed by using the one click toolkit in reverse to re-lock bootloader. All good and back to factory.
Mods - delete this useless post if you want.

This thread show "bail you out..."
For Future reference, having access to a PC when you have an Android phone that you are rooting is somewhat warranted if no one develops the MAC stuff... I have both and although I prefer my MAC, having a PC sometimes is essential. The Thread has links to follow if you are a MAC user.

Thank you for the prompt reply. Well I follow the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2718150 instruction. I successfully completed to

The second thread you followed that gave you instructions to use the am start command is for the m7. It didn't work because the command isn't leading anywhere on the m8. As for the bootloop, are you sure you flashed the right thing? That is rom is for the Harmon Kardon m8. Can you post a fastboot getvar all (without your serial no and imei)?
no luck

Now, with the m8 in the recovery menu (other ways are not recognize by the pc) for fastboot getvar all it says <waiting for device> (please see attached images -0 i erased th final 4 digits of the serial). device manager in My PC shows the phone is connected correctly (please see attach image) but I dont know why it will not answer the fastboot command. Anyways thank you for any advice

Hi all. I recently bought an m8 sprint and I have been trying to sim unlock it but until now I have failed :crying: I manage to root the device and I tried to load an android version which I read help to the sim unlock process but now Android will not load at all (see image attached). I also read I should be s-off but for that I download an apk file which I think I can install it as long as I have android working but the device are not loading android so I can not manage to s-off it. TWRP is working fine, I just dont know how to go further. Your expert advice will be much much much appreciate. Thank you all for any advice (newbie terms)

Hey man, it's pretty easy. Download this file http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=9599 it is important that you use this specific file. Don't trip cause it says harman, it's safe to flash on your device.
After you downloaded follow this instructions.
1. Install WinRar, or 7zip.
2. Open the ROM in either of those programs (don't extract, just open it)
3. Navigate to system, then app, and there you will have to drag and drop the 2 files I have attached.
4. Let WinRar or 7zip save the file (It may take a while 7 - 10 minutes) BE PATIENT.
5. Transfer the modded ROM to your phone
6. Flash in TWRP (Make sure you wipe system partition)
7. Reboot to the system, complete the config wizar
8. Follow the steps to unlock (am.start....... etc.)
9. Enjoy
****** I WANT TO POINT OUT THAT S-OFF IS NOT REQUIRED TO SIM UNLOCK YOUR DEVICE ******
I have made a ton of these and NEVER had to S-Off
If you encounter any issues let me know.

Hey my friend. The thing is that the stock rom doesn't bring the 2 apks required to unlock. So you actually have to push them to your phone. The easiest way is to add them to a custom rom to set the permissions automatically. The other way around is to root the phone, put the two files into the system/app folder and then manually set permissions. If you prefer just follow the instructions I sent on my earlier reply.
Cheers!
android is back to life!

thank you for your directions. good news Android is back to life again, bad news is that sim is still locked, I tried again from terminal emulator the (am.start....... etc.) but I got an error (please see the attached image). I follow all your steps very carefully, the only thing I had to do differently was that I put your attached files in the zip file using windows zip program and it did take a long time to finish (like 30min) I did try with winrar but it keep creating a new small file with just those 2 files. Is it possible that the 2 files were not added correctly?
Thank you for any advice on how to unlock it
going crazy
update: last night I tried the unlocksim.zip file and installed it on my device with TWRP, and then used the method with the the terminal emulator (am ...) and with the sim unlock helper too, but both send me the vDM client has stopped. I read it could be solved with insert coin system, so I go ahead and installed it, but still get the same message. Any ideas?

Hey man, I fotgot to tell ya, you have to be on JellyBean or KitKat for the sim unlock command works. I have tried pushing the files on Lollipop but it always got me force close, so it's better to flash a KitKat rom....
This is what I can do man, I will upload my modded ROM and send you link. Don't give up man.
EDIT: I forgot to ask, did you get the hidden menu where you tap API then SIM LOCK? Or couldn't you get there?
I was thinking about the same thing

a minute ago I also remember I've read lollipop will not work. Your mooded ROM or any other that could do the trick will be the salvation for my m8. Thank you once again in advance

Alright don't worry man, after you successfully sim unlock you will be able to flash any ROM you like, I am using InsertCoin, but again I installed it after sim unlocking
EDIT: For the sake of time and my bandwidth. Can you try the steps I sent you yesterday but using 7zip instead? Please try, right now I have uploaded 100MB/1.5GB so imagine...
I will give it a try

Sure, I will give it a try right now with 7zip. (there's no need to waste your bandwith, don't worry). I'll keep you posted!

Its ready to go. No need to do anything else other than execute the am... command
Need backup, pinned down by failure!
Hey guys, I am having the same problem. Unlocked, rooted, s-on. I tried installing the bad boys 2.1 mod you recommended on the first page, after swapping in the new files, and it still freezes at the HTC one screen. I did a factory wipe before the install as well. I am using a NON HK M8, however I thought that bad boys worked on either. Please let me know if I am incorrect in that aspect.
I am in a similar situation as I purchased this phone and now live in the Caribbean, sprint is blocking my new gsm carrier. What a headache sprint is.
Thanks in advance
bad news, it freezes at the htc one screen

Ok, I downloaded the file and installed it, but it freezes at the htc one screen. Is it possible that the firmaware version needs to be updated? other idea: On your #19 you say it is possible to push the 2 files directly once the system is running, is there a way we can try that?
Have you tried wiping system partition before flashing? What version of TWRP are you using?

Alright my friend. Try the same, wipe system partition before flashing. And what version of TWRP are you using?
I manage to do it
jacnsa said:
ok, finally did it! wipping the partition did the trick and it finally worked ! Well its not a good news at all. Bad news is that even after entering :am start com.redbend... which this time worked and bring me the API menu and then after selecting Sim unlock (and nothing happened). reboot the phone and then entering the *#*#4636#*#* menu and seleccion wcdma prefered still nothing happened. I reboot and again entering the *#*#4636#*#* menu it appears to be again selected the CDM/EvDO.... option, once again selecting WCCDMA preferred and again nothing. I think it is strangethat after rebooting the system the original band appears again to be selected. I am attaching some images which I think can be some kind of help.
Any clue on how to achieve the unlocking will be much appreciated...

Okay. so after hours of searching and reading about unbricking my nexus 6. I am lost, and very desperate.
So, I unlocked my bootloader, and rooted my phone today using chainfire cf auto root. and all went well. The primary reason I did this was to edit the build.prop file to enable wifi tethering, and this is where my problems started. Using root explorer I added
HTML:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
to the end of the build.prop file. I rebooted and now I'm stuck in a bootloop on the google screen.
I did not have a custom recovery installed, so flashing a new rom isn't that easy. I have looked into flashing twrp or cwm from the stock recovery adb sideload feature, but I haven't gotten this figured out either.
So that brings me to where I am at now. I still have an unlocked bootloader, which I guess is leaving me some options, but I just don't know where to go to find information which isn't going to further muck this situation up.
Help, please. I don't have a backup phone. And I am getting desperate.
Thanks in advance
Reboot to the bootloader, flash stock system.img

very first off.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/attention-questions-t3228454
meaning, you wont get help if tou do ont post it in the right place.
secondly, you have two choices, flash twrp then flash a rom, or flash the factory image(just system.img). what your pro lem is tgat you used a toolkit, instead of learning thd very easy proper way. now you dont know how to do things. its rwally easy to flash twrp via fastboot, and its very easy to flash a factory image using fastboot as well. now ill ask a mod to move your thread into the correct area..
thanks

i just saw, it was your first post. i didnt mean to sound rude, for that im sorry.
but you have your answer(s). your phone isnt bricked, its just without os. and the os can be flashed, even using a toolkit.
