I'd like to know your opinion about my country - Off-topic

Hello,
A a Colombian citizen I would like to know what you people think about my country

well I would say don't judge based on TV series as television tend to exaggerate things to gain audience

To be frank nothing really. Why would you even ask that? Each country in the world from Micro to Macro level is contributing to human lives.
Whenever someone reminds me of Colombia I always end up thinking of the Amazon & Colombian Rainforest

Doesn't Columbia have snow capped rocky mountains and is in South America. That's all I know/care about. But I live in Australia which is pretty far away.

I know a bit since there a lot colombians here in spain

i will travel to your country next year

Pablo Escobar ; -)

I don’t know too much about your country. I only know about your football team and Shakira. James and Falcao are my favorite players.

Coffee
To be more precise, coffee plantations that produce crap, okay, good and really good coffee beans (something for everyone I guess).

Not much
But I could imagine the weathers real nice. Being the fact you guys are South America. Aint that like tropical climate are something. I personally would love that Weather year round. Where I'm at its cold about 6 months out of the year, kinda warm about 3 and then so-so for the other 3 months. This time of year is about Winter for us, but actually these last few days have been rather warm actually. Other than that Coffe, Shakira, Cocaine( could be Bolivia I'm thinking with that), and Nice weather are about what I think comes to mind when I think Colombia. I always thought they were warm over there. Didn't know they had snow capped mountains ( you learn something new everyday).

Understand Here In Cucuta Temp Is Very Hot

even more of a reason for me to like it.
Love warm weather. I wish it could be like that all year here. I hate this cold part of the year here. Allergies, colds, flus and all that crap. I can't wait till these next three months fly by so it can warm up.

see on televisión is doing very cold in usa

Yup its that time of year over here.

Colombia, well i remember your national soccer team goalkeeper, it was a dude with a lot of hair . Ofcourse, Pablo Escobar and the well known coffee

The only thing I know about Columbia is that it's home to wicked drug lords that make billions and live in mansions and have pet tigers.

I would love to make a visit.. Can't judge something I havn't seen or felt.

Fish or Chips?

Seems to be an ongoing thing in these forums Recently..
So what do you prefer The fish? Or the Chips?
Well, being diabetic I have to stay away from the potatoes, so it's the fish for me. If I didn't care about my blood sugar it would have to be BOTH!
Sometimes Americans are such idiots. I ordered fish and chips the other day (substituted salad for the chips), and the waitress had no clue what "malt vinegar" was. Took her and the manager 10 minutes to find a crusty old bottle.

Lets try and stay away from rash and general statements. Not all American's are idiots.
Anyway, Fish and Chips is the embodiment of British Culture, along with the pinstripe suit... How... cultural.
well chips as brits call it or frenchfries as some others call it was invented in Belgium ....
What..? You mean it wasn't invented in Yorkshire!???!
i fink you got the wrong end of the stick jupiter Yorkshire puds came from Yorkshire!
Sounds like a Belgian conspiracy to me.
This can help...?
For also in the 1840s, pomme frites ("fried potatoes") first appeared in Paris. Sadly, we don't know the name of the ingenious chef who first sliced the potato into long slender pieces and fried them. But they were immediately popular, and were sold on the streets of Paris by push-cart vendors.
Frites spread to America where they were called French fried potatoes. You asked how they got their name--pretty obvious, I'd say: they came from France, and they were fried potatoes, so they were called "French fried potatoes." The name was shortened to "french fries" in the 1930s.
By the way, the verb "to french" in cooking has come to mean to cut in long, slender strips, and some people insist that "french fries" come from that term. However, the French fried potato was known since the middle 1800s, while the OED cites the first use of the verb "to french" around 1895, so it appears pretty convincing that "french fried potatoes" came before the verb "frenching." The origin of the name is thus the country of origin French and not the cooking term french.
In the U.K., fried fish had been on sale by street vendors since the 1600s. In 1864, a brilliant (but, alas, unknown) Brit teamed French fried potatoes (called "chips" in English) with fried fish, to create the famous and popular fish and chips.

I'm American. Well, by birth I'm Cuban, but been here for 35 years and consider myself and American. Sometimes Americans are quite clueless, and I provided the anecdotal evidence. People in other countries can be clueless too, but in general I think we in America are exceptionally clueless on things that aren't American. Like malt vinegar on your fish.
Damn it. Now I'm hungry.
I have to take issue with the use of chips and french fries as synonyms. (Sorry, that sounded a bit snooty).
Proper chips from a chip shop (and how my granny makes them) are much thicker than the stringy french fries you get from the likes of McDonalds or Burger King and do not come pre-covered with a salt/sugar coating. They are chipped potatoes not re-constituted potato matter and therefore taste more "potato-y".
As a matter of personal taste, I have to have salt and vinegar - the proper malt vinegar, not the french stuff made from wine that's gone off - with my chips. If bought from a chippy, they should be eaten from a newspaper, generally a tabloid, and on the way back from a football match.
I'm going to stop now 'cos I'm ranting on and getting very hungry!
Yiu cant beat the smell of freshly fried fish and chips..
hmmmmm.....
Fook me I Invented this Topic and now I'm getting a bloody history lesson!!!
Are you averse to education?
Averse???
Averse
adj.
Having a feeling of opposition, distaste, or aversion; strongly disinclined: investors who are averse to taking risks.
I quote the belgian fries site :
Of course, in good food tradition, the French claim to be the inventors of our beloved fries: they originated in Paris on the Pont Neuf (fries are still called like that in the chique French restaurants) somewhere in the middle of the 19th century. As with most "French" inventions, they forgot to note the name of the inventor and they are still searching for proof. .
Anyway, we modest Belgians, don't mind the French claim, because we know that fries are Gods gift to our people.
Pictures and texts proof that fries were all around our country in the second half of the 19th century. The oldest written proof is dated 1862 and mentions a certain Fritz and the widow Descamps as owners of a fry stand on the Liège 'kermis'. In 1891 a picture of both stands was taken.
Jo Gerard, a famous Belgian historian, claims to have proof that fries were invented in the region of the Meuse in 1680. Based on an unpublished document, he writes that the poor inhabitants of this region ate mostly fish. When the river frooze, they cut their potatous in a fish-shape and fried them.
Who cares who made them. They are the most unhealthy things you could eat, dipped in oil.
Who wants to admit to inventing the biological cause to the worlds obesity problem!!!!
Fook me i'm enjoying this post its probably the most entertaining historical insight into anything on here
In the US, it was basically impossible to find something labeled "fish and chips" anywhere, until recently. If you ordered some sort of fish meal, then it would come with mashed potatoes or some other "more cultured" side. Likewise, bangers and mash is basically unheard of, though a few places will feature it.
Battered fried fish is generally considered of low value here, I guess due to being associated with garbage like fish sticks. These are nasty little bars of compressed fish meal, battered and either fried or baked. Very cheap, very bland. Served with "tartar sauce" to try to give them some flavor.
Last night I battered up some catfish in corn meal. That's a typical meal from the Southern US (Cajun). You guys on that side of the Atlantic ever eat it that way (or eat catfish at all)?
Have you ever tasted Fish and Chips?
You think fish and mash is cultured?

What would you do with your money if you win the lottery?

great man. GREAT man.
i think id buy ppcs, a couple cars, and maybe a BIG house
I'd travel with my friends and see the world, then I'd use the rest to make other people happy too. I'd have a lot of paintball, airsoft and real guns and a huge yard.
Also I'd have a midget. With a tuxedo.
i wd buy a PS3 a realllyy large TV and some nice games for ps3
I would donate half to my favorite charities, secure my kids education, pay off all my debt, buy my wife some nice clothes and jewelry, and have an investment firm manage the rest.........
Oh who am I kidding, I'll end up blowing it all on hookers and alcohol.
First, Pay off debts, put away more than enough for my children's education, buy a really nice large house on the lake, Boat, 1963 Corvette Stingray for myself and a four door jeep for myself for winter driving, and whatever vehicle my wife wants and do lots of travelling. I would also set up my parents and mother in law for a very comfortable retirement which I would insist should start immediately (they hate their jobs) I love my job, So I would continue working

Keeping it simple, b/c the more complex your life is, the less happy you will be.
First of all, build my house on my beautifull land!
Then, do a looong travel with my wife to Asia
Help this communty with a laaarge donation
Buy me a new Land Rover, and the rest on some SECURE investment, maybe buying gold... as any currency seems to be secure on this days.
Pay off debts, get some cars, some clothes, some tech.
Put money away for college
Buy nice house
Buy nice car
Take out 1mil for personal spending
Leave rest for my future children and in case I ever want to invest in a booming company or buy stocks in coniditions such as this when they're dead just so they can rise later and be worth millions! lol

Hmm. As much as I would like to agree with you on that, and my mom and dad say the same thing if they won the lottery, I think that is soo untrue. Right now you are thinking it is impossible to win the lottery, that is why you say that. If you had actually won a 10mil lottery, I can guarantee you wouldn't be saying that. Even though I don't know you all too well, I don't believe ANYONE could do that. Just my personal opinion. Maybe you're those 1 in 10 million people who is able to just reject the urge to spend money when you have an abundance of it.
Pay for College lol and enough computers to get me threw the next few years lol with verizon boradband cards of course

SH*T!!! I would buy VZW just for aggrivating me, then sell it all to Sprint !
First I would pay off all of mine and my families debt. Then I would deposit it all in savings accounts. Then I would continue working for one year. Then I would live off of the interest it gained. This way I would never spend the money. And my children and grand-children...etc would never have to work. There would always be a secure income for them. I would also buy Life insurance to equal the amount, so that when I die, the money would double.
Yeah-Right!! I'D PARTY LIKE A ROCK STAR!!
I would pay off my debt and invest in the company I work for. I would try to keep working because I honestly love my job!

Best Vacation Spots

My family and I are going to go out of town with my cousins for Spring Break but we don't know where to go. We live in Chicago, IL and we can't fly so we need somewhere we can drive to. Probably like 4 - 5 hours drive from here. Any ideas? Thanks.
Have you been to Niagara Falls?
What type of vacationer are you? I'm a beach and big city guy.

Hmm, from Chicago, let me think here.
I hear that Nashville and Memphis have a really fun nightlife.
Cedar Point, although I'm not that big into rollercoasters.
My good friend said he loved Indianapolis, but I don't believe him.
Cleveland and Detroit are dumps.
Pittsburgh is fun, but smaller than Chicago.
I'm sure you've been to St. Louis many times.
No I've just moved here actually... and from Detroit too. Loll. But yeah. I don't know. We have to get away for lik, 3 nights. So idkk.
When are you going? Honestly, if you're into rollercoasters and the weather is nice, go to Cedar Point.
If you're not into that and into cities or beaches...
Beaches...good luck. The great lakes are TERRIBLE places for beaches. Might as well fly to the coast.
Cities...I recommend going to St. Louis, Nashville, or Memphis. All cities, I'd definitely visit and all are said to have a good nightlife and regional cuisine.

Stanley Cup Finals

Who are you rooting for? Me? Canucks, usually a Rangers fan, but enemy of my my enemy is my friend. I hope the Bs lose, they knocked the Rangers out if first rounds, and hurt Callahan breaking his leg.
I used to be a huge hockey fan but I lost interest. I guess the Canadian inside me is rooting for the Canucks /lack of Canadian pride, hahaha.
Definitely the 'Nucks for me!!
Lost interest when the Red Wings got knocked out. At leas San Jose isn't there!
I found my love of hockey when I was living in Calgary during the 2002 Olympics. Definitely supporting the 'Nucks. I live in NW WA now, and can even get a couple radio stations out of Vancouver.
The Bruins have enough cups, dammit.

Same here! If I have to say I would rather the Nucks win. I don't really care for Boston.
3 more wins! No reason we shouldn't win. Canucks are way too deep for Boston to handle.
