[Q] Firmware update, no OTA? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is my first Sony phone ever (a love at first sight btw), so I wonder how to update its firmware. I saw in the news that a fresh OTA is available, but Update Center claims that my device is up to date already. The current build number of my Z3C is 23.0.A.2.93 - a pretty old version I think.
If that helps, my phone is a D5803, purchased new from a GSM shop with official Sony guarantee, unlocked by default. Oh and thanks for helping out a fresh Sony user..

If you don't find the OTA, then connect your phone to pc and update via Sony PC Companion.
Sent from my Compact Beast The Third.

the FOTA is still rolling out, if your update center doesn't list it yet then it will in a couple of days [it's based on your provider, not rolled worldwide at the same time]

ok I gave it a few days and I still see no OTA. I also installed the PC Companion app and it shows no updates are available.. which looks pretty much impossible for me based on the list of available firmwares and the fact that I'm on 23.0.A.2.93.
Or well.. is this normal?

it is possible that this firmware won't be released in your area as i've read on the sonymobile site that some firmwares are region specific, where are you located and have you checked your local sonymobile site for most recent software version for your phone to see if it matches the one you have currently?

I bought my new Z3C in an independent shop but with a Sony guarantee so I think it's probably an import one. How could I check which country it was coming from? It could help checking the latest software version for that region then..

You can check it by using XperiFirm

I didn't get an OTA. When I went into settings, about, software update it told me about the update and gave me a LINK on where to go to get the updater for my computer.
The updater worked OK on my mac but it sure wasn't as easy as an OTA.

Same story & build here. I don't bother. Don't like to fix what isn't broken. I'm only interested in the future upgrade to lollipop.

[Q] Sony Xperia T (LT30p) 4.1.2 Jelly Bean available for UK but can't update

Hello
According to Sony Mobile's UK website /gb/software/phones/xperia-t/ the update is available:
Latest available software: 9.1.A.0.489
Release date: 2013-02-07
I got my Sony Xperia T by phone upgrade when my contract was up for renewal through T-Mobile (UK). When I select 'check for updates' on that website or through Sony PC Companion, it says my phone is already up to date. I'm on 4.0.4, build number 7.0.A.3.195. The phone doesn't have any physical branding or installed software that appears to be related to T-Mobile so I'm unsure if it is classed as a 'branded' phone.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this a 'problem' at Sony or T-Mobile?
Many thanks!

Please search before posting and post in the correct section. This is a question that wants an answer so should be in Q&A
However, in answer to your question.
Sony have released the first batch of the update. Non branded phones have started to receive this update which is staggered globally and will take between 2-3 weeks to role out around the globe.
Branded phones will take longer as sony release their update to the carriers who then tinker with the update and add their own bloatware to it. Branded update are generally 4-8 weeks later than their non branded counterparts depending entirely on your carrier and is nothing to do with sony

Do you know if your phone is sim-free? if it is sim-free I would assume its a non branded phone...and should be getting the update. If its locked to T-Mobile, then there is a chance it is considered a branded phone (even though there is no apps etc) and is dependant on T-Mobile releasing the update.
this is my assumption and please correct me if I am wrong
My phone isn't branded and still hasn't received the update (not appearing in Sony Flashtool)
The ftf is bring uploaded now, look in the general section

First saw it on the Dutch site, but also on globle site www.sonymobile.com
You are right!
But I have something more - every site where Xperia T is available to be previewed there is an info about this update! But our current build is 9.1.A.1.140 which isn't even officialy certified on PTCRB. Strange

Sony site shows this for me as well, but PC Companion gives no update... it says my phone is running the latest version, which is 9.1.A.0.489
I've tried installing PC Companion for UK and Hungary, without success. Anyone know how to get this update?
I also cannot update to this. Hopefully there will be someone who can get the update and will kindly create a download link for us

Yeah, looked there first. No-one has even mentioned the 9.1.A.1.490 update there yet. I'm wondering if Sony made a mistake putting up the new version.
Well yesterday was published in PTCRB and 140 days ago since it was released, so perhaps have anticipated

I understand. If he really is a next update will be to correct errors. Waiting for 4.2 soon.
At this rate will leave 5.0 and 4.1 will be even!

Me too! I hope Sony will make a correct decisions and we WILL get another updates
And the possibility that Sony support to the range 2012 to android 5.0 T Xperia including (of course) does not seem outlandish.
Sony announced it would give support to the 2012 range (high end) to android 5.0. Hopefully so be it!

4.2.2 update in UK??

When will the 4.2.2 update be released in the UK? Seems like it's been out for a while, yet my phone still hasn't found the update using either OTA or with PC Companion on my laptop.
We don't have the insight to say. Nobody has. And no crystal balls.
4.2.2 has been out for a few days only and is clearly rolling out across the piste.
Just wait patiently or use one of the other Generic ones if you're really that desperate. They're all basically the same apart from minor app differences.
I think Vodafone has released it someone on another forum updated his to 422 via Sony bridge on a Mac.
Never.... (joking)
Considering we were left out of the last few updates wouldn't surprise me if we are the last to get this one.
So I would guess a month

You have a UK unbranded device? Customisation number 1270-7689? Or some other UK device?
Not booting up my PC to find out if this is true or not, as other methods of checking are still showing 434 as the latest available for UK unbranded.
Edit: I see you edited your post. Yes, most are aware that Vodafone have updated

Mines was a VF UK handset upgrade - so branded to them. The phone itself didn't report any system/software upgrades, but as soon as I ran up PCC and plugged it in, PCC kicked off the upgrade.
Just use the Sony original Japanese update it doesn't change the language or anything and everything works out is the official Sony update and u just flash it with a flash tool no wipe of data or anything and u can easily root it with doomlords rooting method. It's a one click root.

Just change to a different generic customization. Some people seem to think that there is something special about UK firmware, but that isn't true at all (except that it seems to get updated last). All customizations contain the same baseband, kernel and core. The only difference is the bundled apps, build.prop and some overlays. I think 'Generic ES' is the best customization to change to. It contains all Sony apps (so you won't lose Video Unlimited or anything), of course it also contains all languages and it seems to get updates first.
Also, please stop asking when an update for a certain customization will be released. Nobody will be able to tell you, so it's completely useless to ask. There are ways enough to check the latest version for your customization. I have a list that I update daily or even multiple times a day, you can also create a browser bookmark to Sony's Firmware Update Server (see same thread) or you can use this web check: http://scavenger.ch/sonyupdate/.
Don't worry, it should come sometime this decade...we might even get the firmware update that everyone else has had for 2 months before 2017...wouldn't that be great?

Instead of waiting weeks/months/ages and complaining, just change to a different firmware customization like everyone else did. What are you scared of? There's always the possibility of changing back to 'Generic UK'.

That doesn't exist. In Japan, the Xperia Z was only available through the carrier NTT DoCoMo, which had a slightly different version with a different model number (SO-02E).
Check this list for the available customizations: [INFO] Latest firmware version per customization (region/branding). For the UK, I would recommend 'Generic ES'.

Downloading the 'Generic TW' FTF and flashing it with Flashtool, or changing your customization number in build.prop and updating with Sony PC Companion will give exactly the same result. 'Generic TW' is the only customization that has been updated for C6602. It also seems to get updates first each time. So I recommend to use that firmware.
I will sell my XZ and buy Galaxy S4 i think, its not about changing customization etc it shows how Sony treat UK customers...

Good luck with your (plastic) Galaxy S4 (with ugly *** TouchWiz) then. Hopefully Samsung will release updates faster to the UK
Do you really care so much about the 'Generic UK' customization? It's not like it contains any special features that can't be found in other customizations.

How firmwares are pushed?

I'm new to the Sony ecosystem. I'm kinda confused on how firmwares are pushed out to devices. For example the new .769 firmware just got released and the log says it's supposed to be for Asian lte z1 but u haven't received it all while others have said it's already on their device. Same thing about the . 761 firmware too, I thought it would be available for Asian z1 also

hi are you sure its been released 769 that is, cause i havent seen anything on any fourms saying that ,but i might be wrong lol ,can you confirm this, regards joe
Sony split their phone models into groups based on hardware (like 3G, LTE, etc), and regions (like asian, europe,etc.). These are usually because the firmware has to be modified to work on each device (in case of hardware) or certain softwares which are very essential in certain regions maybe completely useless in other regions. So, each firmware varies from one another in these aspects. These firmware have different versions (like .757, .761, .769 as you said). All Xperia Z1 phones in the world which are active will be able to update to .757 firmware because it has Android Version Update which will be available for all models of a particular phone. While .761, .769 are bug fix updates which fix the bugs present in .757 . These bugs are usually occur when the base firmware is modified to work on other models of the phone. So, the models which has these bugs only will get this update, other models in which the Operating System runs without any problem will not get these updates.
Since you have not got any updates your phone should not have any bugs that are fixed in .761, .769 firmwares but sometimes the update just doesn't show up on the Update Center. So, better connect your phone to SUS to confirm that there is no new update for your phone.
Hope it helped.

I have been waiting for updates for my C6903 since early this year and yet my PC companion and OTA service both say my phone is up to date...

Could someone let me know what the latest firmware FTF is? Either UK or generic is fine.
Thanks

My Z1 is from Ee but second hand from game. I first got the Xperia Z because it was unlocked then it got blocked by something then Game( the shop) charged an extra £80 so I could have a Z1 which is locked to ee when I wanted an unlocked.
Ughhh I hate this world
