Stereo audio recording when capturing video. Is it possible? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Although the Nexus 6 has 3 microphones (one built in the bottom speaker hole, one on the back plate close to the Micro USB port, and one next to the back camera lens), it looks like audio is always recorded as mono when shooting video. Furthermore, the audio is always captured from the front mic in the speaker hole, which means that it takes the sound from the opposite side of the camera lens.
I've also tried with other camera apps (such as Cinema FV-5 which allows to select between mono and stereo audio) but the audio is recorded mono anyway.
I've then checked the file media_profiles.xml in /system/etc/ and found out that basically all different resolutions had channels="1" , which means that only one (mono) audio channel is recorded.
I've tried to change channels="2" and rebooted but still all audio was recorder as mono and from from the from mic instead of the rear mics.
Any ideas on how to get stereo audio recording?

First of all, I do not have access to a Nexus 6, but I recently made a stereo recording mod available as part of my "larger" Nexus 5 camcorder audio fix over in the Nexus 5 General section.
On hammerhead, the spatial aspect of the stereo recording is surprisingly impressive (although one channel suffers from some "coupled noise").
It helps a lot that the two microphones seem to be of the same make and model (according to the LG service manual). It is also advantageous that the two microphones are symmetrically
placed on the sides of the phone, where scattering and diffraction effects help with spatial separation.
To me it is not clear whether the same level of spatial effect can be achieved with the Nexus 6, but it is worth a try.
I took a quick look at the mixer_paths.xml file where additional edits to enable stereo recording would be required. I can probably help you in getting some form of dual-microphone
recording to work, but there is likely some back-and-forth testing and manual system file editing required. Shoot me a PM if you are interested in pursuing this.
@chdloc has found the solution to this (thanks!)

Distorted sound when recording in loud environment
Anyone facing this issue on this device? As stated in the title, it gets distorted when the sound recorded is very loud. Used to work well on my LG G4 and Xperia Z though. Even in normal condition, the quality of the sound recorded is not very good too compared to my previous phones but is considered bearable. After some research, I found that this problem is called audio clipping and already existed since the OPO. I wonder if there is any fix to be done in software like editing the mixer_paths.xml. Edit: Tried HI-Q MP3 Recorder with raw audio selected in mic selection which means there will be no processing at all (no noise cancellation) and it sounds good surprisingly so is there any way to completely disable this noise cancellation thingy?
I've got the same issue. Recording via OP Camera app, a lot of distortion is in the audio, along with Snapchat too. Using the stock Recording app shows crystal clear audio.

It would be great if we could set such a raw mode as default for all recordings (incl. the stock Camera). Perhaps there is a wise developer around who could help out? Just dreaming...
Man I thought I was the only one dealing with this because I have yet to find a fix for it. However for me it only happens on AOSP/LIneage based ROMS. When I'm on Oxygen OS or Oxygen based ROMS like Freedom OS recording works just fine. It seems to be connected to "Ok Google" functionality because that also stops working for me too on custom ROMS. Ironically it will trigger it initially for me to train my voice model but once I do it stops responding.
Good camera app to use. I also experienced distortion when trying to record video at a concert. I found an app in the play store called Open Camera. It has an option to record audio unprocessed. I haven't tried it yet in a concert setting but maybe someone will see this and try it. Since many are saying recording with raw audio fixed the distortion issues.
Nexus 6 Video recording / audio distortion at concerts.
Hello, I've noticed that at some point between Android versions from 2015 until now... my recording of videos has changed. I have videos saved, which I was right in front of speakers at shows and my Shamu recorded the video / audio well and minimized the bass and volume distortion . Now, I just noticed that recording in loud concert areas leads to VERY distorted audio ( sounds just like when I used to overload my Nexus 4 with bass back in 2012. RIP, Nexy :crying: ) while my girl's dumb iPhone recorded the same show without Muddy, bass overload. Did something fundamentally change from Android versions 6 - 7.1.2 ( when I think I noticed my videos had awful , distorted audio.) that affected how one can record Loud audio?
How to fix very poor audio recording quality on redmi 4a?
Actually I am having some audio recording and audio in video recording quality issue. It seems to be that the real sound is trying to noise cancel. I think this is for aggressive noise cancellation. But I can't fix this. Even I rooted and changed to many rooms but all are same. Is there really no fix for this issue? At first the audio is clear for 1 or 2 seconds but after that the noise cancelling starts. Look at this demo of my records...I don't know how to attach files so I am putting a Google drive link.... https://drive.google.com/file/d/16Vp_A8t_eriIY64Vyv_wsd2k0PLEfi55/view?usp=drivesdk Go to the link and see the recording quality and plzzz help me... I can't record in this type of recording quality please help me fix this problem .
I think its fine the audio. But just change the audio recorder to another one
lg v40 recording videos with external Mic help!
Hello, I have big problem with recording video with external Mic. I had a lavalier type Mic that I got from Sound Professionals website last year. It worked great with the v30 but on v40 sounds very strange. I mostly record myself playing my instrument (double bass) for study and pedagogic purposes and now low notes sound tubby as if underwater effect...tried lowering sensitivity (gain) but didn't do much difference I was using HD audio mode on manual video camera Recording with the internal phone mics is very good but lacks low frequency range (at least until 40hz) so I need external Mic to properly judge my sound production. I'm seriously considering returning this unless I can connect an external Mic.that has good sound I'm hoping it's just the Mic went bad Anyone with some external Mic experience please share your experience.
So after some troubleshooting it seems it's the video camera app that has a bug when recording audio from external Mic. I used the same microphones with the HD audio recorder app and the sound quality is just perfect. Only when using the video camera app (manual or auto mode) the external microphone sounds like crap. I used some third party video recording apps and again the external microphones work very well (though these apps don't have all the nice manual audio and video settings as lg's stock app) Anyone else has a similar experience? Not sure whether to reset the phone or exchange it...high quality audio video recording is THE reason I buy this phone...
Note 8 and Rode video mic
So when I'm vlogging with my Note 8 and using the rear video camera with the Rode Video Mic my voice can barely be heard? Any adjustments or settings I can do to correct this? I even took of the cover on mic still doesn't help?
