Hi everyone. I've been absent for two months, while my device was being repaired after water damage. It took too long, so I got a new phone (yay!). Now I'm looking back into the possibilities of getting more freedom.
Now, I've been trying to read up on latest developments, but I can't get a handle on all the information. Today I'm seeing posts that proper rooting/unlocking is still not possible (without loss of the xperia camera and audio functions). However, I did find this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...a-z1-z2-z3-series-devices-drm-t2930672/page42
Can someone please help me by telling me what is the status on the following points that I would like to know:
1. Is it possible to root the Z3c right now, without losing the camera/audio functions?
2. Is it possible to flash a custom ROM, without losing functions?
3. Is it possible to flash a modified stock (removal of bloatware, adding other apps), without losing functions?
4. I need more storage, but I can't move apps or anything to my SD card. Has anyone found a working solution for this? (I believe it's possible with root)
For now, these are the most pressing matters. Basically, I want all the features my current phone offers (like connecting the dualshock controller easily!), but with some extra freedom.
Thanks in advance for helping me get up-to-speed!

Hi. I searched the forums for the answer to this, to no avail.
I had been using ROMs for some time, finding that I couldn't put up with the missing functionalities of different types.
Anyway, I like the stock OTA android system with all of its flaws, etc. I don't mind.
My question is: when I root the G1, will I still receive OTA updates, i.e., will my phone function as if it is stock? I want to root for the SOLE purpose of getting my wireless tethering back, as I travel frequently.
So basically, what are the downsides to rooting, if any?

you will NOT receive ota updates rooted. but the benefits of root outweigh those... one downsides. i honestly cannot think of one downside to rooting.
Thank you. I also wonder what exactly do OTA updates entail? Is it only the firmware version that is updated like once a year, practically?
I am currently having ongoing arguments with T-Mobile about how the GPS in the SGS is flawed no matter what they do it for things like navigation, especially when compared to other phones.
I am very close to been able to swap it for another phone, but I want to bring it right back so they can't tell i've had custom firmware on.
If someone can help I'd be very grateful.
Many thanks.
Hello all!
I'm a newbie here on the forum so forgive me if I ask a silly question...
I just got my Captivate from At&t for christmas and tho I love the device I do have a few issues I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me with. I've searched for answers for a while, and though I've found a lot of resources, I'm not quite sure what's the best way to achieve the results I want. I'm not much of a programmer so I'm hesitant to tear into re-coding anything, which seems to be fairly common with customizing the Andriod systems
1. - I purchased the OEM car mount, and tho it wasn't mentioned on the site, anywhere, I'm sure everyone is aware that the Audio Out on the mount doesn't work unless you're running Froyo 2.2 (a lovely note they decided to add on the back of the mount but not anywhere in the specs online).
Regardless, it's quite a nice mount and after researching online I tried to do the Froyo Update posted here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=797282 : to get the audio out to work with the mount... however it wasn't a success.
I also came across the issue with this update that the headphone jack on my handset wouldn't work with phone calls anymore...
So since then I have reset my system to stock using the Odin Master Clear.
Now, I've tried searching online for anything about getting the OEM Car Mount audio-out to work... but have yet to come across anything besides people complaining about the cost.
Any ideas?
2. - I have noticed the stock system's GPS is a bit sluggish and not quite as accurate as I had hoped. I know there are tons of posts on here to fix it but most of the ones I've read require rooting the device or reworking the coding...
Could someone please point me to an easy to read reference for fixing the GPS?
3. - This may be simple but, what's the best and easiest way to remove At&t bloatware?
4. - Is there a hack or app to enable the camera shutter button to work off the power button or volume buttons?
That is about all. Thanks for reading if you've made it this far. I appreciate any help or direction anyone might be able to give me.
Like I mentioned earlier... I've been trying to research how to do these upgrades on my own, but with all the different options available, and my first attempt not working so well... I'd much rather ask for help then bumble around and break something.
Thanks in advance!!
Nobody's got anything?
I'd at least think there'd be some insight on the Car Mount Audio issue... beings there's posts and posts of people complaining about it yet I haven't read of a ROM or tweak to fix it.
Hi there. I'm looking to replace my Xperia X Compact as it does not support t-mobile WiFi calling. I'm looking to purchase an xz1 compact as I absolutely hate Sony's new childish, rounded handset look. However I'm very concerned that I will be able to get all the features working that I require, especially with the latest firmware. I would appreciate some up to date information as well as any links to guides to accomplish all of my requirements.
What I require:
1. Root is a must. I do a lot of automation with Tasker and want to have full access to my device. Obviously I'd also like to install recovery and ensure that the camera and all apps and features are fully functional.
2. Fingerprint scanner functionality is required. I use a password manager and have no desire to ever be without this feature.
3. I live in an area with mediocre coverage and frequently visit places with minimal coverage. Thus I have realized that I have need of T-mobile us WiFi calling, band 12 support, VO-LTE, etc.
I have read that with some minimal editing of the firmware files you can flash a modified UK firmware to allow both the fingerprint scanner and WiFi calling but I'm concerned that I might lose one or both if rooted. Furthermore I'm concerned that with the latest OTA I won't be able to accomplish all three. I'm obviously not willing to lose any of these features.
I'd appreciate any updated information and would love if you could point me to any guides.
Thanks in advance.

All good questions. I was kind of in the same boat, although in the end, I sacrificed root access and settled on only having fingerprint and TMo VoLTE/WiFi calling (mostly because I didn't have the guts to unlock the bootloader with only a questionable DRM fix method available).
I used the information in this thread to get fingerprint and TMo stuff working together. It was pretty simple, and worked great the first time. However, I'm pretty sure OTA updates will break that functionality and you'll have to go through the process again if you want to update the OS and keep fingerprint/TMo stuff working.
As far as root, you will need to unlock the bootloader, and then you will need some sort of DRM fix to keep the camera working. There are a few methods in this forum scattered around, but none of them had enough positive results reported back for me to feel confident in trying them. Remember, once you unlock your bootloader, there is no going back, so you're stuck with a non-working camera until you can find a DRM fix method that works. The most widely used root / DRM fix method that I know of currently is Xperifix, although since it is a paid for tool, there is no dedicated thread here on XDA. There are some discussions on xperifix.com, and a lot of people have had success using this. However, a lot of people have struggled with this as well, so I didn't feel confident enough to try it.
As far as how the DRM fix works with the cobbled together firmware for TMo/fingerprint, I can't say, and I don't think I've read of anyone reporting that here on the forums. I suspect everything would work together just fine, but can't say for sure.
Good luck, and if you do end up getting everything working together with root, please do report back here, I would definitely be interested in hearing about it.

At this point it's pretty much a gaurantee that you can root and add the DRM fix easily. But now I'm hearing something about the pictures will still not be the same quality???
I'm curious how do you keep the device from getting OTA updates without root access?
I'm really not okay with having a device without root access. The ability to make my own recovery images is an absolute must. I'm also too invested in tasker automation to stop now.

No, has nothing to do with picture quality. The camera either works or it doesn't. When you unlock bootloader, the camera stops working (solid green pictures). When you apply DRM fix, it starts working again as it did originally.

I disabled the update centre and update service using this method - no root required.
Does anyone know if this method to keep the wifi calling and fingerprint reader simultaneously active works after recent ota updates?
Still searching for someone on T-mobile US with this device that can verify that I can achieve all 3 at once (Root, Fingerprint Sensor, T-mobile Wifi Calling).
Please help.
Ok, so I bought the ROG Phone 2 on AliExpress a few weeks ago on Black Friday because I really needed a new phone. After reviewing the page details I found out that the seller puts the global rom on himself because it comes by default with the Chinese rom. Will this still work for banking apps and OTA updates? Can I make it work somehow? Had I known in advance that it wouldn't be the Real global version I wouldn't have bought it, but since I've waited so long to get it, I'd just assume make it work myself, rather than go through the whole hassle to return it. I don't know much about custom rom's and what is / isn't possible, so I am at a loss as to what to do, or how I can check what kind of phone it is when I get it. Any help would be much appreciated so thanks in advance!
Here is the page where i bought it, because it has some more information on specifics: "aliexpress.com/item/4000106113494.html?spm=a2g0s.12269583.0.0.5fd61d0e5SUkH5"
Also side question, since the seller changed the rom himself should I be possibly concerned with keylogger or anything?
1. I shouldn't worry too much about keyloggers etc. but if you are, just run a good virus scanner when you get the device...
2. With regard to banking apps, they mainly have issues with being rooted... which you won't be.
3. Regarding OTA's, assuming the fingerprint has been changed, you can see this thread for an app that allows updates to be enabled, providing you aren't rooted or anything.
But, if they haven't changed the fingerprint (you can check using device info HW under 'system') then you'll need to follow one of the guides on the forum to change it yourself... here's one... change fingerprint
Is there a way to unlock the bands, or is that strictly a hardware issue?
