I think I found a bug with Moto Voice.
When you use Moto Voice to send a text, it sends the text from the stock messenger app even when hangouts is set as the default SMS app.
It only happens when you use voice commands to send text. It could be through either Moto Voice or OK Google.
Another issue I've found that it it sends out my carrier number rather than my Google voice number?
Anyone else having a similar issue? I'm guessing it's more of an issue with Google than Moto Voice.

It does, but the message will pop up in hangouts once you exit the app and relaunch it. Moto's voice actions are built into the stock messaging app, not hangouts. You'll also notice that if you get a hangout message, the phone will not read it aloud when you're home like it does when you get a SMS through hangouts.

Is it the Moto Voice Action or is it Google's (Ok Google)?
I tried "OK Google" and it does the same thing - uses the default messenger app to send texts and carrier number instead of google voice number.
I'm sorry, I didn't see mention that you were trying to use your GV number. I assumed you meant your carrier number.
So I met with 3 other friends. 2 have a Moto X 2013 (Kit Kat) and one had a 2014 (Lollipop).
2014(Lollipop):
Same issue. When using "OK Google" to send a text.
1. Text goes through Hangouts.
2. Outgoing text is seen in both hangouts and default messenger.
3. Reply to the text shows up in Hangouts.
4. Carrier number is sent to the recipient
2013(Kit Kat):
Works as it should. Text goes through hangouts and google voice number is sent to recipient.
1. The text actually goes through the google voice app and is seen in hangouts.
So I think it is an issue with the O/S.
What is everyone else's results.
Have you confirmed your Google voice number in settings under your account?
Nevermind... my results are the same as yours.
Yeah. I've tried everything including resetting the default SMS app. Going to have to live with it until it's fixed.

Yep this is something Google needs to fix. Seems like Hangouts has been getting some attention recently so it might be on the way.

Viber is an Android* and iPhone application that lets you make free phone calls and send free text messages to other users that have Viber installed. When you use Viber, your phone calls to any other
Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free and now also text them. All Viber features are 100% FREE and
do not require any additional “in application” purchase.
****************************************************************************************************
WHY USE VIBER VS. OTHER VOIP (VOICE OVER IP) SOLUTIONS
****************************************************************************************************
* COMPLETELY FREE AND WITH NO ADS: Viber and all Viber features are absolutely free and do not require any additional “in application” purchase. Once you and your friends install the free Viber application, you can use it to talk and also text as much as you want. Just makes sure all your friends get Viber! All you need is an Internet connection: 3G or Wi-Fi where available. On top of that, Viber doesn’t contain any annoying ads.
* NO INTERNATIONAL CHARGES: It doesn’t matter where you or your friends are, be it on the same network or in a totally different country. You can talk for as much as you want, for free. Just make sure your friends have Viber too.
* NO USERNAMES, PASSWORDS OR REGISTRATION: You know your friend’s phone number, so why bother with yet another username and password? Viber uses your phone number as your “identity” and lets you make free Viber phone calls to any of your friends that have Viber – using THEIR phone number.
* NO NEED TO ADD BUDDIES: Unlike applications like Skype, Windows Live Messenger or Fring where you need to “add buddies” and have them approve you, Viber behaves just like a phone. Just like you don't need to “add” someone in order to call them, you don't need to add your friends in order to call them on Viber. If you know their phone number, then you know their Viber number, and you’re ready to go!
* DON’T KILL YOUR VIBER: To make sure you always get incoming calls/messages notifications, we strongly recommend you to keep Viber running in the background. This doesn't drain your battery or use up memory and improves your Viber experience.
* SOUND QUALITY: Viber uses state of the art technology in order to make sure the sound quality you get is much better than GSM or a regular phone call.
* MUCH MORE COMING: We are hard at work bringing many more features to your Viber phone. More ringtones (and custom ones), wallpapers, location based services and more are all coming soon to Viber!

Just sharing the app, I know the deal
Enjoy
Thanks for sharing, but this is just another fring/qik that requires both parties to have client installed and running. It's battery drainer, runs in the background, and does not have an option to quit/exit out.
I prefer GV + Sipdroid as a true VOIP option that utilizes real phone #'s for inbound/outbound calls via wifi/3g/4g.
give this a 2 out of 5.
I have tried almost all the sense roms and for me they all have the same issue. My issue is when I try and change my voice mail number to Google voice I get

My previous HTC's had that problem with t-mobile too. Just go into the call forwarding settings and change it manually (+1 then your google voice number) or follow the star code at voice.google.com under phones.
Sad thing is I flashed back to stock to try it there and it didn't work.

I'm having the same issues with Google Voice as well, won't change from "My Carrier". I can get it to work by going into the call settings and letting it automatically change the forwarding number to the Google Voice number, but no matter what I do I can't get it to show up as "Google Voice" as my voice mail provider.. It always shows "My Carrier". Google Voice works, but it won't let me "view and listen to messages from notification bar", it'll only let me view and listen to the calls through the app itself. I had no issues with my S3 or LG Optimus G Pro, but the HTC doesn't play friendly with Google Voice
I've tried the following steps:
Deleted and reinstalled the app (several times)
Manually changed the voicemail number
Went to the Google Voice web page on my PC and deactivated and reactivated it
Tried it on 2 different custom ROMs with the same results
Any other suggestions? I really would like to use all the features of Google Voice, but until I can I'll have to decide if I want to use it as a stand alone app (instead of in the notification pull down) or use the At&t Visual Voicemail.

Interesting, if you found a solution to this issue. I has the same issue with GV and wasn't able to find a solution anywhere. GV notifications on voicemail, missed calls do not appear in the notification bar. No voicemail access from call log. From the application itself everything works. But I really miss the integration, like it was working on my SGS 3 and Nexus 4

I never found a fix, I just use it as a stand-alone app. It notifies me I have a voice mail, but doesn't let me play messages from the notification area... I have to go to the app, then it takes 2 or 3 times of hitting play for it to work, I keep it because even with all it's faults, it's still one of the best out there. It worked flawlessly with my Nexus 4, S3, S4 and LG Optimus G Pro. Just has issues with the HTC One... Maybe someday there'll be a fix?
Anyone else having issues with contact photos in SMS preview since the latest update of Hangouts? Seems none of my contact photos are showing up in SMS preview for both Active Notifications or Notification Preview (swipe down from top). The issue resolves itself temporarily after a reboot, but starts happening again shortly after 1-2 SMS messages.

Yeah, I'm having the same issue on my Droid Maxx although I can't get the issue to resolve after reboot.
I think it may be not possible now.. Not Sure..
Pretty sure it's because they combined hangouts and sms in the same window in the hangouts app. Probably need an update from Google.

I have a same issue too. It's annoying. Either reboot your phone or manually resync your Google contacts. But then after some time the pictures disappear again so it's not a solution.

It seems if you start a hangout message it shows what ever pic the user has on Google+. On my Droid Maxx if I start an SMS it shows the contact pic fine until I switch to Hangouts.

Still having the issue after clearing cache and app data. I'm going to try and downgrade the Hangouts app and see if that helps.

Yeah it turned out to only work after I initially did it but has reverted back. Very annoying.
I also have a Droid Maxx. This is one of the MOST maddening things to me. I have intentionally and meticulously spent hours making sure that all of my contacts show up with photos. I can't seem to solve this one. Prior to the last update that combined SMS/Hangouts all photos were correct. Now some of my contacts no longer even show the name, just a phone number. When I touch the stock photo it shows the person's photo and their name. No idea how to fix it. Not everyone has Google+ so this is not going to work. I'm giving this app until the next major update with GV being integrated and hoping it's fixed.
Has anyone else come up with a solution?

Glad it's not just me. I finally switched to Hangouts once the most recent updates enabled me to send photos over SMS via Hangouts and not require having a G+ account (I do not). I received a bunch of updates this afternoon and rebooted my phone (Droid Maxx) as I like to do sometimes when I install many updates at once. I now noticed this exact problem.... when I have a text waiting, and if I pull down the Notification Shade, the picture next to the contact is the default grey icon. Yet the contact photo properly shows up in my Contacts in the phone and within the SMS Hangout. Very odd, and annoying. I will try clearing the cache and data and see what happens. If this can't be fixed soon, I'll go back to the default Motorola SMS app.
I just had this issue. It appears that hangouts is using the google plus photo when you have a hangout, so there is an issue for only google hangouts photos.
I force closed the app and it fixed it. Try that out.

I have an unlocked galaxy note 3 (at&t version) that I put on cricket 2 weeks ago. Everything works perfect with one exception. I cannot reliably receive mms messages. Voice and data are perfect. It will send and receive sms without fail. It will even send every mms I attempt send but for some reason it will not receive all mms coming in. As a matter of fact it misses most of them but occasionally one or two come through. The phone is unlocked. It is NOT rooted. I have not received a configuration message but I have entered the apn settings on their website and have checked them over and over but no luck. Any ideas? Thank you!

Get on with cricket chat. They are very helpful in getting things sorted. They may need to add your device to their database or even have you adjust some settings. Here are my APNs that came with the config messages when I put my SIM in my new phone.

sometimes in the messaging application setting there is a tweak for MMS messages. Like you have to be on mobile date and not Wifi or something like that. Take a look at the settings.
I used the apn settings shown above and am using textra where I was able to manually enter the apn settings in the messaging app and so far it is pretty much working. It didn't want to get mms from my Verizon phone very consistently but other phones are sending to it fine. I'll go back over everything and make sure there's no typos but so far it's better anyway. Thank you!
put your sim in another phone until the 3 text messages come through. put it back in you gn3 and the the 3 text's and the 2 configs should download
Hi all, can someone explain me - why the hell we have 2 preinstalled messaging apps?
Google messages with one ui skin - can disable, but not uninstall
Samsung messages - can't disable or uninstall.
We have two of them, and RCS seems to not working on any of them in my case, Samsung gives me "registering failed" then RCS is grayed out, google messanges stuck on "trying to verify your number" it is a joke.

I had both apps on my phone too. As you said I could only diable the Google Messages app, not uninstall it (being a system app). So I just use Samsung Messages.
But RCS is working fine on the stock Samsung messages on my phone. I don't think it's a problem with the app. Maybe something to do with your region or carrier?

Download "Carrier Services" from the Play Store - you shouldn't have to on Samsung devices but it might help if you're having issues. Once installed, reboot and try Google Messages again.
I find the Samsung app faster to find a contact when writing a new message.
