I enable ambient display feature on my nexus 6 as it doesn't have an awesome pulse light like nexus 5.
However if I enable this feature it includes both wake screen when pick up and notification comes. But I suffered the problem of wake screen when the phone is in my pocket.
When the phone is waking even the scree is locked, you can still touch the notification bar and do the settings. I suffered many times when the phone is in my pocket, but the flash light is on or put the phone in airplane mode. It's very annoying.
Can someone tell me how to disable notifications bar when the phone is locked or disable wake screen when pick up feature but not wake screen when notification comes.
Thanks.

If you put security on your lockscreen, you can't touch anything from ambient display without putting in your pattern, pin, or password.
I think there are some other apps that have similar functionality, that have more options. AcDsiplay, DynamicNotifications, and NoLED among many others. I am not saying these are good, as I haven't used them. Just saying there are some other apps that can probably give you more options if that is what you are looking for.
Otherwise, if you are a custom ROM person, I wouldn't be surprised if someone makes more settings for Ambient Display eventually.

Thanks, I will try those apps and see how is going.

I did set it and use pattern as screen lock but I can still touch the notification bar.
Do I need to select password or pin?

If I have the phone on my desk where it can't scan my face and unlock, is there any way to reach over to view and dismiss notifications? Currently if I double tap the screen it just goes straight to trying to scan my face, but it only shows a notification icon and no contents. I can pull down the notification shade and check it that way, but that's an extra couple of steps. Am I just out of luck if I want to use face unlock?

I'm seeing the same thing. Haven't found a way around it. There's a setting in face id that you can check that asks you to confirm unlock when it scans your face, but, it isn't working apparently. This is definitely one of my gripes so far.
i think i have a fix for you guys if its sitting more or less flat and you wave/hold your hand over the top it will activate the screen with out it scanning your face its part of the motion sense options i believe

It will activate the screen, but it'll only show the notification icon, not the contents.

Try swiping down on the screen. Notification should appear at the top & you can view or dismiss.

Yes, I already mentioned that in the OP. I'd prefer to skip that extra step.
I have just switched from a OnePlus 7 Pro and I am confused by this too.
Is it not possible to view notification content directly on the screen without pulling down the shade every time?
Disabling 'Skip screen lock' makes the phone behave like other androids without face lock. You can read and interact with your notifications. But it's an extra step to unlock the phone.

Good catch! I'm going to do this for a while and see whether I prefer this and having to swipe up, or just let it unlock.

Yeah, I tried it and realized I like the skip lock screen feature more. I think it's a bug and have raised it to Google via the feedback option. Hopefully they fix it.

This is definitely the better way IMO. It'll probably save battery, and I don't have to be on the home screen every time. I do already miss the one step unlock though. My 3xl, I would just grab it and hit the fingerprint scanner at the same time. This one I have to swipe now. Oh well, not sure there is any other way.
Hi guys
As soon as the phone detects the face, it brings the home screen(desktop)
Is there a setting to keep the clock and screen lock on even if the face is recognised? (Then you can manually swipe up to go the home screen).
The only way to do this is to hide all notifications and enable the content when the face is detected.
What I'd like to have is, seeing all notifications on the lock screen (with the content) being able to unlock the phone but still not land to the home screen (Staying at the screen lock)

yeah but in this case the notifications on the lock screen only appears when the face is recognised. I'd like to have them on the lock screen regardless.
Is that possible?

Why don't you just double tap/swipe the screen to turn on and see the notifications and then unlock using your face.

Yeah but the moment you look at the phone, it unlocks. Without even being able to see what notifications were on the lock screen.

Just tilt the screen to an angle where the device doesn't detect your face, that's how I do it anyway which I am fine with.

How can I toggle the AOD to be completely off? This is driving me nuts. I'm aware of the settings within the Motion Sense area of settings. The "show when nearby" seems to take, however no matter what I do the clock still appears no matter what as an AOD. I've tried disabling the following in different combinations to no avail:
Motion Sense
com.google.oslo
Pixel Ambient Services
com.google.intelligence.sense
Motion Sense Bridge
com.google.android.apps.motionsense.bridge
Even tried the clock app itself
com.google.android.deskclock
Whenever these are initially disabled it seems to work for a minute or so but then the clock pops back up on the AOD. I just want the toggles to work! This is for when I'm driving and my my phone is mounted where it faces me. I already have 2 clocks in my car and don't need a third it's more of an annoyance than anything else.
Do you have Always On disabled in the Lock Screen settings?

Search for "always on" in settings and turn it off
display / lockscreen / always on - does not exist
Searching for "always on" yields no results.
I don't have a lock screen set as I don't need it, though I did try setting one temporarily to see if the option showed up, but nothing. That's how I used to do it on my note but they moved everything around on 10.

You really don't have always on under..settings/display/advanced/lock screen display....then scroll to the bottom??
Display, scroll all the way to the bottom, select lock screen display, bottom third of the screen you'll see Always on, toggle it off. You can still have it light up by tapping, lifting, or triggered by soli, in any combination if you wish.
edit.. Ninja'ed me Badge, it's there, he just missed it.

It's probably because you went around disabling apps. Enable the Pixel ambient Services.

With everything re-enabled and a hard reboot, I set a screen lock. Then went back to display and the "lockscreen" option was now available. I turned off AOD and then disabled the screen lock and it took. No more clock.
It seems as though the AOD toggle being buried in the lock screen options, which is only available when one is on will take no matter of a lock screen is set. So every time I want to change this I have to go through this process. I wish there was a Quick Settings shortcut for this.

Well it's not exactly meant to be toggled on and off often like the ones in the Quick Settings pulldown menu. The easiest and quickest way is just searching "Always on" in settings and you can actually toggle it right there as seen in the screenshot.

Also if you are not using the active edge for anything critical you might try button mapper by flar2 and see if one of the options can be set to it. Or maybe even on of the other options in his app will apply it.

I don't now and have never had a lock screen enabled on my phone and can and have always been able to enable or disable always on display. Unless you disabled some app affecting this as mentioned above it should be there for you too just as it is for the rest of us. You may want to look into that and see what's hanging you up.

I haven't been able to do it since it was virgin out of the box, the option just isn't there. Doing it on my old Note 8 was super easy it was right where it was supposed to be. Although I have found a workaround for anyone on the off chance I'm not the only one experiencing this.
Being rooted, I downloaded ShortcutMaster and used the app explorer and poked around until I found;
[Setup Wizard]
com.google.android.pixel.setupwizard
tap and scroll down to;
com.google.android.pixel.setupwizard.alwaysondisplay.AlwaysOnDisplayOptInActivity
Choosing [launch] triggers the screen from inital setup to toggle the AOD.
Set it as favorite, or Homescreen (on the paid version)
Launch Shortcut master each time to change it or use the homescreen icon shortcut.
The setting seems to take each time I've done it so far.

Having used the phone for a week now, no major issues, but just one thing annoying me.
Some apps' notification are not received when my screen is off. Once I wake up my phone, the messages are then received and shown. But some apps (like WhatsApp, Messages) are working fine.
I've checked all the battery optimization settings for those affected apps but had no clues why they are not working the way they should. These apps are working fine in my other devices.
Appreciate any suggetsions.
Sounds like what I experience with OnePlus phones...something they did to make the battery last longer between charging cycles. Not much you can do. If they allowed background apps to work as we wish they would the battery life would stink and people would complain and sales would drop.
In my experience this depends on the system mode you select under settings/battery. For me in the dynamic mode notifications appear without delay, but some appear only when I turn on the screen in the durable mode.

It's a setting from security and lockscreen. Press the clog at the right of screen lock. There you have a setting called notifications on lockscreen. Set it to show all notifications
Disable adaptive notifications. This should fix the issue.

no, it's not related to whether notification is showing in lock screen or not. the symptom is that only when i wake up the phone, the notification will then be received. i can see from the firewall log that google service framework accessed data as soon as the phone is awake.

ok strange, this fixed it for a friend.
I'm trying to enable 'tap to check' option to show aod when tapping once from screen off. But instead of going to aod (black screen with time and notification icons), phone goes directly to lock screen.
Is this a bug? If not, is the preview from settings wrong?
I have the same problem on p7pro and I can't figure out if it's a bug or normal behavior: I did read a lot of XDA and reddit topic but it's not clear.
Do you still have the issue ?
Mine doesn't work with tap but if I lift or just move it gently, that will show the AOD... but lift it too hard and it goes to lock screen.

I just noticed it last night. If I just lift it a little on it's side, it's AOD (or ambient display ?) coming up, and if I lift it completely it's the lock screen plus looking at my face to unlock.
But I would like to have only the AOD when I tap it with a finger, because most on the time it unlocks when I tap, because it sees my face ^^
Edit: and the AOD do not come every time I slightly move it. Like when it's just locked, it doesn't come ...
When I tap mine it goes to the lockscreen, but any notifications are shown also. I have face and fingerprint unlock disabled. When I had them enabled I would never see notifications unless I unlocked the screen first.

Yes still having it and I can't find a way to make this work as it should. Let's wait for Monday's feature drop to check if it'll get things fixed.
Yes, same here.
For me lifting goes to lockscreen, I cannot achieve the situation that slight lift causes AOD to show. The same with tapping - it goes straight to lockscreen (though description and preview suggests that it should show AOD instead of lockscreen). Whenever I receive a notification, AOD shows and it's OK. Basically what I don't like is that tapping should show AOD and is showing lockscreen instead (the best option for me would be to have single tap to show AOD, double tap to show lockscreen and while on AOD, double tap to show lockscreen).

Exactly.
for the AoD to show, you can try to slightly shake it, or lift only one side when it's on a table.

I am using the QPR2 beta. It still goes to the lock screen when tapping but it does seem to more reliably go to the AOD when I pick up the phone and only goes to the lock screen if I'm more aggressive with it. I'm actually fine with it now.
