Looking for a car mount - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
i just got my N6 and i'm very happy with it.
im looking for a new car mount to hold the N6 and specially a cdgrip one.
i didnt find yet one that fit the N6 size.
do you anyone here have one?

Here's a thread you should read. It has all sort of car mount options for Nexus 6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/accessories/car-mount-similar-to-iottie-t2910978
For CD slot, I've tried Exogear Exomount. It fits Nexus 6 just fine, but i returned it because it was sort of clunky and not one hand friendly. I've ordered Mountek nGroove CD slot cellphone mount. I'll see how that goes.

I got the ram mount setup with the x grip IV. It's a pretty big setup but so damn sturdy. The x grip IV is perfect for the nexus 6, they grab a little less than an inch in on the sides so the buttons are well out of the way. I know this mount system will be with me for years to come.

i will appreaciate if you will update if the nGroove is fit to the N6 size.

I use the Mountek nGroove "Grip". There's another 1/2" or so of space when the grip is fully open with a Ringke Fusion case.
The mount tightens to a point where there's no vibration as well.
Great mount overall.

Does the mount interfere with the power/volume buttons?

Thank you sir, I see they are about $10 to $15 dollars cheaper on Amazon.

with how big the nexus 6 is, I think that a cd slot car mount might be a little on the unsafe side. But I'm not entirely sure.

Nope, see here:

The cleanest mount is the Scosche magic mount. It was 15 bucks and a perfect solution for phones with slim cases.
Sticks to the inside and the magnet is strong. No more clicking in or clunky mounts.

I've been using ProClip ones (https://www.proclipusa.com/) for the last 4 years or so and never had an issue. I can't stand window mounts/suction holders, so this is a good alternative. It's a bit on the expensive side, but well worth it if you want something solid. They also provide good options if you want to move mounts between cars. I highly suggest a "universal" holder that fits the N6 dimensions so that you can keep using that holder if you get another [phablet] in the future.

I have a Brodit 511479 Universal Mount and it fits my Nexus 6 very well, with or without the official Casemate case:

I put in my order for the air dock 2 from indigogo when it was close to being funded. Will post pictures once I receive it.

I have the Scosche magnetic mount in my car, and it holds my Xperia Z Ultra (which is bigger and heavier than the Nexus 6) with no problems - although I do have the metal plate stuck to the outside of my case rather than the inside.
Do you find that the metal plate interferes with either Qi charging or NFC on the Nexus 6?

I have mine stuck on the inside of my Ringke slim and I've had no issues with NFC. Have yet to try wireless charging.

Which car mount currently for sale fits a Nexus 6 with a slim case?
I can't use a CD mount since the car doesn't have a CD player and I can't use a magnet mount because we use a Qi charger at home and the magnet would interfere with it.
The large Belkin vent mount and the Kenu Airframe Plus are both slightly too narrow. This is so annoying because they only needed to make those mounts a few MM bigger and they would have fit comfortably.
What's available for these phones?

I use a "Ram Mount Universal X-Grip IV Large Phone/Phablet". It's pretty heavy duty and unfortunately not one handed operation. It's never dropped my phone over the 2+ years I've had it.

I use this one and it does wireless charging which the Nexus supports. It's a suction cup but it's super strong and mine is mounted on the underside of my dash in my truck.

The cigarette plug has an extra USB port to charge other stuff as well.

Car mount?

Hi,
What kind of car mount do you use? And where did you buy it?
If possible, put a photo of it
Thanks.
i'm just using a Generic car mount for PDA from DealExtreme
I bought this universal dock on eBay and LOVE it. It mounts to your CD player in your dash instead of on the top of the dash or windshield.

nice concept, but it will not work on mine, since my CD player slot is hidden
and it looks like as if that thing can pop out and fall at any time
how does it latches to the slot?
just using those 4 little wings to insert inside, i don't think those will hold.
i'll like that car mount, if they had an Air Vent clip for it
I'm thinking about getting this: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/universal-silicone-car-mount-for-all-gps-33213
Anyone have any experiences with silicone grip mat products like this one?

No it wont pop out, its 'wings' splay up and down and grip to the inside of the cd player mounting judging by the video
Arkon SM428
I bought an Arkon SM428 on Amazon.com for my Vibrant, but works just as well for the NS I just got Vibrant got smashed in car door . Dirt cheap too. Don't let the screws in the picture scare you, only necessary if you don't have a flat enough surface for the doublestick foam tape, which holds tight. Easy to rotate 90 degrees when needed.

Bought it from seller "GPS Cheap"
Hope you find this useful.
I got this from best buy, I mounted it in thespace that holds all my crap near my shifter

Here's some pictures I took.
https://picasaweb.google.com/nXtIak/CDPhoneMount?feat=directlink
2004 Mazda 3i.
The bottom part is removable, have to remove it to be able to plug in a charger, since it's very very close to the bracket. Mount holds the phone fine with the sides.
I'm not sure how I'm going to use the mount. Installed up or down, been trying both.
You can only swivel the mount updown/left/right just a little bit, so I'm sure in certain cars you won't get a great view of your phone.
The mount does shake a little bit while driving. Tightening the cd slot screw does not help.
Overall, I like it.

The CD slot one is great. Really good quality, plus I like it mounted there a lot better than on top of the dash or the windshield. I have been using it for a couple months now and I still love it.
Plus it is very easy to remove to put a CD in if you want to use a CD, then you can replace the phone holder and the CD will still play fine.
If you're willing to wait, dunno when, Kidigi is planning to release some car mounts. They look nice, but expensive as usual. About the same price as the HTC car mount for the Nexus One. Just google Kidigi and visit their online store.
Wow, for a passive holder, this is amazing:

Try this I have been using them for the last two years with the many phones I have had and all mounts are amazing. They work really well and are made for your vehicle and phone in mind, for a total of 84.95 for the entire kit.
I actually found this while wondering around BestBuy, which means Im sure you can find it for 50% less then I paid for it there. :º)
Although our phone is not listed as compatible, it actually fits it like a glove, even in my thin case.

Im not a fan of the extension arm, it feels as cheap as it looks. The dash mount works perfectly for me in my Subaru.
Best part of all is that not of the plugs or camera are blocked.

so this is like a sticky/suction cup mount? I've had bad luck with these in the past and was wondering if this one is any different esp in extreme winters/summers

I have the mount on the dash for 2 months now, went through the summer fine, if the extreme heat was fine, I'm sure the winter weather will be fine too. :good:
As long as you have a fairly flat area on the dash, it should held on tight!
Can the Nexus 7 remain vertically oriented.
I just purchased this car mount for my nexus 7. However, I like to have the nexus in portait mode, not landscape. Will this mount allow me to do that?

Sturdy, stable, simple mount! Highly recommended!
JUST got mine in from Korea. Took a while to get here.Ordered it 12/3 and received today on 12/17 about 10 business days not counting weekends.
The packaging is really nice, thin but nice. Inside you find the mount ready to go except for maybe the inserts or tabs to insert in the mount depending on your dash to adjust/correct the height.
The suction cup is comprised of the sticky pad stuff that you see on the Xenogear mounts where you can use a wet towel to re-institute the sticky suction cup if it gotten too dirty.
The GREAT thing is that this mount is way smaller than any of the other "off dash" mounts that I have seen. I prefer this because if you use the mount with a N7, then your vision is not impaired because the tablet it not on the said dash, rather off the dash, maybe hanging is a better term to use lol.
Another awesome aspect of this mount. It can be used with both my Nexus 4 phone with or without a tpu case on. However, you have to place the phone in vertically. Which isn't horrible, I am use to mounts with side clamps of some sort. Just something to get used to.
Anywhoo...here's some pics with both the N7 and N4. I recommend this if you are looking for a smaller footprint of a mount! I'll report back on usage in a couple of days.
Does this mount come with an extension to sit further out from the dash if needed?

It does a bit. The mount, when unswitched can telescope out a bit. I attached a quick pic telescoped and not. Looks like it comes out like 2 inches. Which is pretty cool.

I also got the same dock, it looks great very well built.
The only thing I want to comment is that the arm that moves forward and backward is too short for my car. The dashboard of my car is not flat, it's kinda curved upwards and have a line across from left to right. So I have to put the dock to far back, towards the windshield to make the dock suction cup stick to the dashboard. The N7 is sitting kinda high above the dashboard as the end result.

No it doesn't.
I got the one from the same company off Ebay that is supported entirely by the cd slot. I found the thread about it here somewhere.
...Anywho It's a little wobbly on bumpy pothole roads, but its not going anywhere. It comes with little rubber stabilizer posts but I couldn't use them since the radio touch screen is behind it. I really enjoy it considering Toyota wanted another $2000 for their nav/web link stereo system and my N7 pretty much does the same thing! I don't see any damage to the CD slot either, I don't use it anyways. Sorry if the pics turn out bad, I'm on the XDA app
BTW, what do you guys use to keep charging the Nexus 7 while it is in NAVIGATION mode?
I tried multiple USB car charger and although the N7 shows as "charging", the battery goes down. The N7 was in this mode:
- Car mode using Car Home Ultra
- Google Navigation
- Connected to my phone wifi (tethering)
- Brightness at 75%
- NO BLUETOOTH
Since the wall charger is rated at 2A, I guess we need a car plug and a car charger able to provide 2A. I don't think I have ever seen a car charger that powerful.
Great mount. I've been looking for something similar to this. Thanks for the pics.

Car Mount: This is the cheapest & effective way (using velcro)

check out the photos. I took 2 pieces of velcro, looped it on car vent in the center. placed my N7 snuggly into it, (tablet has a tpu case so it helps with gripping). non evasive and no car mods needed.
tested during morning rush hour traffic, stop and go. also tested at 80 mph driving freeway, braking and turning sharply it stays in place. very non evasive and i can take off the velcro anytime and it works great.
Installation time took about 30 seconds.:good:

i think u should stick some of those velcro on the back of the nexus' TPU case. much cleaner look. not liking the velcro loops on the front, but hey, it works. good job.
ive tried the velcro on the back. i hate that. it makes the case not clean. also you have to velcro something on your car and I hated that. especially when it's warm. so now you have a piece of velcro right on your radio lcd and it looks like garbage.

Yeah, that's good thinking.
It won't work in a lot of cars, because of the angle of the dash and vents, or due to glare, but if that works for you, you can't beat the price or ease of installation.

Its also important to take into consideration any safety aspects in the event of an accident. A flying tablet in the cabin would not make a good passenger.
Holy crap, that's ghetto.
You could find a better way.
I installed car audio for 10+ years and that's the most ghetto mount I've seen yet. But to each his own
Nexus 7 dash mount
I bought these at kmart for only $7 each. I got 2 so $14 total. They are magnetic. They clamp to you vents in your dash and then you mount your phone to them via a magnet and I small metal ring that sticks to the back of your device. I used 2 of them side by side, then 2 of the metal rings on the back of my nexus 7 and boom. It works great. It will work in any vehicle with heat vents. It is very easily removable and you have more capability of putting in a convenient spot. I have a chevy blazer in Pennsylvania and I went 4 wheeling with this on and it did not fall from my dash not even 1 time. Also as sturdy as it is it is very easy to remove to take with you when you exit you vehicle.
sent via samsung note in boss mode @ dual core 1.9 ghz
Wouldn't that block your vents, and make the device too hot when your heat is on in the vehicle?

If someone would create a dock for the dang thing I would have one installed in my car. One where the Nexus 7 comes out of course.
there are definitely lots of ways to mount. i said this would be the cheapest, and it's non intrusive to the car. it's also very effective meaning it won't fly out or fall off a suction cup or break off a vent. it takes about 15 seconds to do so it's by no means a professional job. and i have other vents on the sides of the dash that provide heat if needed, and cooling in the summer time actually keeps the tablet cool.
i can take off the velcro in 2 seconds and my car will be non invaded by crappy ebay/amazon mounts.
and no way will i spend tons of money for a "professional" to mount a $199 dollar tablet to my car dash. that's just f**kin' stupid. and plus it's a honda. (no offense to the guy trying to bluetooth to his mercedes).
:good:

Hey what is the name of the product in kmart ?

Car mount for note 2 AND gs3?

Hey guys. Ive looked and there are a few threads but nothing seems conclusive as to what is the best choice for a car mount that will fit the note 2 and also work with the s3.
I want a strong suction and something that will hold the phones steady for use as a gps buy not block the screen and must allow for the car charger to be plugged in to the phone.
Need two so preferably something that won't break the bank.
Thanks.

ive got one of these. it opens wide enough to hold my note 2 with my chunky heavy duty case. enough suction force to not wobble either. but only really seems to work on windscreens. wont work on the faux leather dash in my honda civic, but will work on plastic dashes.
I went with the iBolt xProDock for my Note 2. It fits the GS3 as well and works with cases. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1910428 or http://amzn.com/B00AOCSFYC
I love it. It is super easy to insert/remove the phone and it holds it very solidly. I've had it a month and I only suctioned it one time. It shows no signs of weakening. I think the price is definitely worth it.

seems awfully expensive for something with 3.5/5 rating. I think I prefer the clip posted above. i'm going to try to find it locally if not i'll order online.
if there's anything else that would be better please suggest it!
Got the mountek cd slot holder. Couldn't be happier. Doesn't block the road and looks almost like a 2din receiver. Oh super stable too. My old suction one would shake so much and it would be hard to reach while driving
I use the official Samsung Galaxy Universal Suction Car Mount Kit for Samsung Galaxy Phones available from Amazon US. I paid £22 for it delivered to the UK. Very solid, works well with my Galaxy Nexus, S2 and iPhone. Reviews suggest it does work with the Note 2 as well.
You will need to purchase a car charger though, but cannot fault it at all.

I got the same car mount and reviewed it here with pictures:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37487154&postcount=49
The only difference, it was from ebay shipped for only $3.95. Took a little over a week to get here, and it's a fantastic car mount that will hold any phone.
Exomount 2!
I own a few of the Exomounts and one of their newest, the Exomount 2. It is easily the best I have tried as far as a universal type mount.

My girlfriend uses this in her 2011 Scion with her GS3. It will also fit the Note 2 with most cases. If you have a giant Otterbox case, it'll be a tight fit. I like this mount because it sticks to the dash and can be adjusted to be around the level of an air vent mount. You can adjust it to different heights and even use it on the windshield.
Her Scion has a textured dash and it hasn't come off in 3 months. Good mount, imo.

thanks for the link. I guess I should have updated the post to mention I already ordered mine.
ended up going with a clip style holder, I like the design more and I want to use the phones horizontally, which the clip seemed to be sturdier at holding than this kind of mount.
let's hope its good!

Since N2 has a big screen, I like to mount it in portrait mode more than landscape for GPS navigation. It lets me look more further ahead.

Arkon makes some of the most durable car mounts! I have this Megagrip since 2.5 years using it with Droid X and now Note 2. What I'm very excited about is their upcoming Slim-Grip Ultra mount that can fit anything from Note 2 to Nexus 7. I talked to Arkon customer support and they mentioned it will be available in a few weeks. Once I get it - will review it here!
The best ones are from ibolt..... check its Web Page. .. !!

Personally I the Breffo Spiderpod, I know its not a car mount but works a treat. just shape it to what you want. Mine uses the vents to hang on, been using it for 2 months now. My Note 2 has never come out, and I just slid it in and out even fits a treat with my flipcover.

The Samsung i9300 official one works perfectly for me - fits my Note 2 with case, and is also sold as S3 compatible (and in fact I've tried mine with an S3 and works fine). Solid, has never fallen off my windscreen, and I'm just converting it at the moment to have a fixed power plug I can slot the phone on to, though that's probably not an option if you want to use the 2 phones with it.
I second the IBolt for Note2. I have been waiting for it to be released for months now and it is finally out. Although you have to wait for the charging cable until March.
It is built very very well, mounts to windshield, dashboard and has an optional permanent mount bracket also. My favorite part is the phone goes into Dock mode once attached. I have this mount for the GS3 and it is amaizing. Before purchasing it for the S3 i went through three seperate mounts from Best buy, returned them all. None of them came even remotely close to the quality of the IBolt mount.

I was following this dock right up to the point where they said you had to connect the power cable yourself. I wanted a mount that I could slide the phone in onto a power connector, for one-handed operation. I'm now making my own

I get what your saying, but i usually dock my phone when i get into my truck connect it and it stays there until i get out. I don't see any reason for plugging and unplugging it while driving unless i'm missing something?

Me too, it's just the ease of doing this that I want. Slide in, slide out, no fumbling around for cables and getting the orientation and angle right and pushing it in properly... Much rather have a 1 handed operation that I can get in the car, place the phone in its dock, bring the sides in to grip it (easily all done with 1 hand), and have it activate car mode and start charging from the car at the same time. Equally, to get it out I just press a button on the back to release the grip, and pull the phone up - still all easily done with one hand. It's how I've had every other car dock as well. Sometimes when I get in the car I forget to put my phone in the dock, so it becomes even tricker - this makes it very easy.
Anyway, each to their own. I'll probably start a thread about the one I'm making at some point so other people can do the same thing if they want.

I'm interested in your project. I was ruined by the excellent car dock that Motorola made for the Atrix. It was perfect.

[Q] Car mount similar to iOttie?

I have an iOttie that I use on my note 4 (I am going to return it, to get the nexus 6). However I noticed that the nexus will be too wide for the car mount. Does anyone know a similar mount that will fit this phone?
Not off hand. I wish they would release an official car dock. The one for nexus one and gal nexus were awesome. Nothing released officially for nexus 4 or 5
There's an "iOttie One Touch XL" that holds devices up to 3.5" wide, which should be enough for an N6 plus a case.
I'm planning to get The Air Dock for it.

As much as I love wireless charging (and I do I have 5 QI chargers at home I use all the time) it just doesn't work for me in the car. I use GPS and stream music all the time with screen always on. Wireless can't even come close to keeping up to that. I'm sure it will be worse with the N6 screen size too... I am really hoping they release an official car dock this time. Moto seems to be good at doing that so I am hopeful.

On iOttie's website FAQs, they list the sizes of each of their mounts. Actually, the One Touch XL only goes up to 3.3", which should be just wide enough for the N6 since it is roughly 3.27" wide. However, it probably wouldn't work if you put a case on it. The only one I can see working if you put a case on it would be the Easy View 2, which has a max width of 3.5".
HOWEVER, I can see another potential issue arising if you want to use a car mount like this. Notice where the buttons are. They are not towards the top of the device like other phones. They are smack dab in the center going down the right side, taking up a good range in the middle of the phone. So you would have to have the mount clamp down on either the top or bottom of the device. I guess we won't know how awkward it would be to use until we have the device in-hand, so we'll see when the phone actually comes out.
Interesting- when I posted that comment there was a graphic on the Amazon listing showing support for up to 3.5. The image is no longer there, so it was likely an error. Too bad.

I have the IOttie Easy One Touch XL
MODEL NO: HLCRIO101
It is the best mount I've found to reduce vibration, and super easy to use.
Another iOttie that would work if you need extra distance from your windshield to you, but will vibrate more of course is the iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Universal
MODEL NO: HLCRIO121
Just go with 9to5mac.com ... if they say this one is the best so I won't argue

Just found this
I have a Tylt Vu Qi charger for my N4 on my desk at work and I've loved it. I've had it for just about a year now (or has it been 2 I can't remember).
Anyway I ran across this recently and they are advertising it will launch this year. I'm optimistic since Tylt makes such high quality products (from my limited experience)

I like the magnetic phone mounts. I currently use one from Mountek on my Nexus 5. http://www.mountek.com/shop/
Do you have to use the plate or does it just hold on with the Nexus 5 magnets?
Anything like that but with qi charging?
Thanks

I just received this one from Amazon a couple days ago when I was able to get it for $7: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009GSI0MM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Will see how it works out. Keep in mind the buttons are almost smack dab in the middle of the right side of the phone, so you have to be mindful where the grippers will squeeze, or it'll push the buttons.
Inspiration! (Mountek nGrove Grip)

I'm using Mountek nGroove Snap2 with my Nexus5. It's great that I don't have to use any of the plates provided as Nexus5 has wireless charging feature, so the body will stick to the magnet just fine. It is very convenient that I can just throw and it stick easily unlike the hassle of using grip type mount.
Now I hope it will work just fine too with Nexus 6. The non flat back of N6 worries me. maybe I need to modify it so that N6 will not move around when mounted. :fingers-crossed:

I have the same magnetic mount. One of the best purchases I've ever made. I have an iOttie as well but the Mountek is just so much more convenient in that I don't have to slide open the arms to insert or remove my phone.
I have the same concern you do about the curved back. I also use a case and was thinking I'd have to bend the included metal plates to fit between the phone and the case. I absolutely refuse to stick the plate to the back of my case because of the added thickness and the fact that it will just look ugly.
I have the iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Universal Mount (The one that extends), it's a great mount and will fit the N6 without a case. The problem is the button placement on the N6., the mount manages to squeeze the lower volume button when it shuts. Also It will not fit with a case on. Just thought I would let anyone know who was looking into it for a care mount. Again for any other phone this thing is great, best mount I have purchased so far.
RAM X-Grip?
I have been looking into the RAM X-Grip, mostly because of its 4-point "X"-Grip which should avoid pushing any of the hardware buttons.
It is also built like a tank (w/ lifetime warranty) which should lend itself well to any dashboard video recordings should I desire to utilize it for that purpose.
It is relatively expensive ($40-52) but if it out performs (in terms of secure grip & vibration reduction) every other plastic 2-piece pincer style mount then it is absolutely worth the extra investment.
I am still unsure whether the short arm or medium arm length would be best and whether to go with the small or large suction cup option.
I read on Amazon, one pro for the large suction cup (aside from likely better suction) is that the 1" ball (that the arm attaches to) screws on to the suction cup so it can be a bit more versatile (allowing you to screw anything onto the suction cup) should you desire that functionality. Although it appears another option should you desire more versatility from your mount would be to purchase the 1" ball with the plate (w/ screw holes) separately and simply replace the X-Grip mount. This of course means you have the adjustable arm in the system now, but I think that's a good thing.
Last note:
I also read in an Amazon review (and sorta noticed in one video review) there MAY be a bit of play (rotating around the z?-axis, like rotating portrait to landscape) in the X-Grip cradle/mount itself, but more research is necessary to confirm this is actually an issue or just a faulty unit.
First post on XDA
I will be back after further research.
