What does everyone use for:
a. Video Format and Size?
b. Software to Convert?
c. Media Player on their Kaiser to play their videos?
I am trying to determine what the all around most efficient video format and player is. Also looking for a great video converter that is efficient and preferably free.
avi-DivX
SUPER converter\pocket divx encoder
TCPMP!!!!! With Raw or DirectDraw drivers, works great for me!
i am currently using Magic DVD ripper which converts my movies/tv shows into avi's suitable for pda. File size is pretty big but it's pretty much perfect quality and great sound. oh and play them in TCPMP of course. I think my transformers movie is about 1.7gig

Regards,
of course you can play video on the kaiser. just use xilisoft dvd ripper to convert a dvd and then install tcpmp on your pda
Check out the first post on this thread. It's what I use and have never had a problem...

What resolution and file type is best for the Nook Color? I tried one at 1028x563ish and it won't play. I have another that is like 420x800 or something like that and it plays but picture quality isn't quite as good as it could be (worse than streaming content viewed on the nook). What have you guys had work well for you? I have been using mp4 files cause they will play on my nook and my wife's iPad
The search function is your friend...there are whole discussions on this subject. To sum up...854X480 is the Max resolution for hardware based playback. There are multiple links to various handbrake presets...the one I use is set to 1k kbits.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA Premium App
MoBo Player is also your friend. Works well with just about anything.
Try 512x300 (a quarter of the Nook screen) at 600 kbps with 96kbps audio. More than sufficient!
I know it's not as good as the max res the Nook supports but it allows you to put many more movies on it at the same time...
I usually use 852x480... I didn't know about the 854x480 limit - I'm not sure where I got 852 from. I use ffmpeg to rip... the most important thing is to have -vpre baseline in the options or the video may not play. Mp4 supports a ton of different options when encoding, and baseline makes sure that nothing is included that the nook can't handle.

I use handbrake and set video to 1024x576. Mobo plays this perfectly.
I realize this is beyond the max rez, but with Mobo it is gorgeous for playback.

Just note that your battery life will suffer considerably compared to encoding the video so that the DSP can handle decoding.
I use Cucosofts dvd ripper ultimate.this software is capable of converting to just about any format out there.I've had great success with mp4 itouch settings. Set to maximum bit rate for the best picture quality possible.Rips and converts any dvd I've thrown at it.Audio and video quality is great.
Step 1 - Create a folder called 3D under Oculus / Movies / My Videos /
[it'll look like this Oculus / Movies / My Videos / 3D]
Step 2 - Put your 3D movie in that new folder.
Step 3 - Get into Oculus Cinema and go to my videos. It'll be labled 3D on the top corner and the video will merge the two views when you watch it.
PS - I moved the whole Oculus folder from the gear vr sd card to my previous sd card. And I still don't know how to watch youtube other than downloading it from youtube and placing it in the 3D folder.
Have fun!

Good to know. Thanks for sharing the info.
Is there a particular 3D format that is recommended for Note 4/Gear VR combination?
Thanks,

Surething!
Cough , For movies I already own, I just torrent any "3D" Movies. I heard Gravity looks awesome in 3D.

So basically any SBS mkv should work right? How is the movie experience? Is it worth the 200$*add-on?

The experience is out of this world. Haven't had any real VR experience before and it is crazy awesome. It's very immersive, enough to trick my mind to thinking i'm actually there in 3d space. Like that one mogolian hut scene as well as the circus were very real. I see huge potential in this thing. Oh, about watching movies, yeah, you're in a virtual cinema which is really cool cause the lighting of the movie lights up the whole interior just like in the real movies. Youre gonna love it. yes, it's worth 200.
edit: haven't tried mkvs. The two 3d movies I had were mp4 and they worked.

Is there an app that allows you to watch the movies without the virtual cinema surroundings, as in just the movie in 3D? That's basically what I'm buying it for, so it would be good to know if it works without any sort of extra fluff that isn't needed.

Yes, there are 4 options for the cinema setting. One is a blank dark screen so you don't see the seats etc.

You can do that in the Void Cinema within the Oculus Cinema and also in the VR Gallery app.
I lost the SD card that came with my gear vr. I created the folders oculus/movies/myvideos/3d in my regular SD card but they still don't show. Any ideas?

Not sure if you got this working yet, but did you create the 3d folder as "3d" or "3D" - not sure if it's case sensitive.

My only guess is that you need the other files. I copied all the files over to my larger SD and works fine.

MKV and AVI video works but NOT audio! It only works with mp4 (which are also what all the stock videos are). Anyone know how to get audio to work with other files???
Update: I can play the same 3D (SBS) MKV or AVI files with a regular app and audio is great. (also louder than VR app) If I place in front of the VR without plugging in I can watch the video in 3D fine.
Ok figured it out. If the movie is a sbs movie lets say gravity.mp4 then create a file called gravity.txt in that file put this
{
"format": "3D"
}
This works every time for me. In the oculus cinema app, under my videos you'll see the movie and it will say 3d in the top right corner

Weird people said that creating a 3D folder and putting the files inside is enough for it to work, but maybe not with all 3D videos?

What regular app do you mean? Do you mean a video player app outside of VR?
Perry, I'm not sure if this might be the cause but like I said, your folder is not even named correctly to begin with. It's NOT myvideos folder. It's my videos folder. There is a space between my and videos. You dont need all that txt crap. Gravity works 3d, ive already watched guardians of the galaxy 3d on it.

I was just going by what oculus support wrote for the gear vr bro. The my videos thing was typo on my part, my bad. Worked for me thought I'd share. This is per their site
https://support.oculus.com/hc/en-us/articles/204372193-Watching-Your-Videos-in-Oculus-Cinema
For 3D video content, Oculus Cinema supports the side-by-side and top-to-bottom formats. To designate that a file is 3D, create a text file with the same file name as your video and place it in the same directory. For instance, for mymovie.mp4, create a text file mymovie.txt, with the following content:
{
"format": "3D"
}
Where the format can be any one of:
“3D” : 3D movie side-by-side
“3DLR” : 3D movie side-by-side (same as “3D”)
“3DLRF” : 3D movie side-by-side full screen
“3DTB” : 3D movie top-to-bottom
“3DTBF” : 3D movie top-to-bottom full screen
The next time you launch Oculus Cinema, your video should automatically appear in the “My Videos” section. If it doesn't, please check the instructions and try again.

Correct. For example MX Player will play MLK and AVI with audio fine. Oculus only plays mp4 with audio.
Where is the best place to get 3d videos to work with the vr? I have a bunch of 3d blurays but I don't have a player for my computer. What is the best way to convert your videos to play in the vr. I also have a ton of ultraviolet movies I can download, will those play in the vr?
Also can i buy 3d movies from vudu and use them in vr?
Doubtful. Drm will lock most of the movie stores out your only options are ripping your own Blu-ray or. Pirating. At least until the supposed mgo advanced movie service for the gear Vr comes out.
Just started researching this VR stuff today (no idea why), but I'm considering getting a VR for a Note 4. I'm not much of a gamer, so the primary use would be for watching 3D content and what not, but who knows if I'll get into the other stuff.
1. Do any of you solely use the Gear VR for movie watching? Is that your go to method of watching movies now?
2. I'm really not a fan of TouchWiz, and I've been reading that you can play 3D content using another 3rd party player. Is the 3D experience worse outside of the cinema app, or do you get the same immersion? Are any of you running alternate ROMs and happy with the Gear VR?
3. For 3D rips, obviously close to source is best. Are the ~2GB rips from torrent sites complete crap for the VR experience?
4. Is there anything in particular through hacking/experimenting that you found pretty cool?
I can only tell you for Gear VR 2 (Samsung S6), but Oculus Cinema should be the pretty same:
1) not sure. I watched for 2 hours 2d movie and the screen is too big (i think), you can not watch the whole screen at a time, at least not for details. If the movie uses cuts often, it is hard to adapt the new viewing angle that fast. Maybe with more training for myself...
2) you can use cardboard players (bad) or you have to recode 3d-sbs to 1920x520-sbs for example (so every side has right aspect ratio). Then you can play with mx-player but no lens correction. All cardboard players suffer on missing AC3 codec, needs to recode audio to mp3 or similar.
3) torrent site crap i do not know, use 1080p-sbs content (4-10 GB), that is good quality
4) Thats what we all are waiting for. At least an AC3-codec like for mx-player would be nice!
1) definitely not. Pixels (resolution) on such a huge virtual screen turned me off.

1. Yes and no - have a 120" projector screen so the gear vr doesn't really compare. But it is great in those situations where you don't have the option of using a large screen, or you only have a small lcd tv at home. The movie experience is pretty great on the gear vr especially if you re-enode your Blu-ray to full-sbs 720p movies.
2. Yes it is worse, so for now the cinema app is the best app.
3. 2Gb anything is crap when it comes to full movies.
4. Just remove the cushioning in order to get a much larger fov!
2) Kodi beats Oculus cinema hands down with network and 2d support.
