[Q] screen backlight perameters. - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use my Z3C at night quite often and find that the backlighting is too bright even turned all the way down. The adaptive lighting option does not bring it bright enough durring daylight use if left un the low setting. Is there any way to adjust the backlight other than a 3rd party app?

Do you mean other than the brightness slider?

Install lux and set it to adjust brightness automatically depending on ambiant light.
Set it to -10 or 5% with 1 lux and 100% with 100. Etc. It take time to adjust it but will save your eyes and battery.
Donation isn't necessary but bring some good options.
Works like default adaptive brightness but with more steps (if you desire), darker or lighter...

After a few days with Lux, it is much better. It allows the screen to dim and brighten way past stock settings. I really like the night filter mode. When i am outside and check my phone i am no longer getting blasted by a spotlight bright screen!

Dim screen further.

I find that my screen doesn't dim enough when I'm in a dark room. I've obviously taken manual control over brightness. I k ow its possible for the screen to to dimmer because my alarm application can dim the screen. But is like a way for this to be system wide. Does anybody know a way of doing this?
If you can share I'd be most appreciative.

I use something called screen filter from the market. It puts something similar to a black screen overlay on the screen and allows you to control how much it dims.

You can also get an app called Curvefish Brightness Level which will dim your screen lower. The phone controls only allow you to bring it down to 8%, I believe. This app lowers the brightness to 0%, which makes a difference.
For further dimming, use the app recommended above.
My eyes thank you both. I tried Curvefish's solution and it couldn't do low enough (works well, but my room is pitch black at night. Would work for someone in a theater which is why I'm keeping it). Screen filter works extremely well for my needs. The only downside is it does some funky things to blacks when enabled. I can live with that, and its a small price to pay for might time reading comfort.
Thanks again.
EDIT And if anyone wants to know, I'm using Alarm Clock Plus. I like it a lot.

Getting brightness down below 11%

Has anyone else noticed their D3 on stock ROM min brightness is 11%? I noticed since getting my D3 that it has always been pretty bright, even at min brightness level. And using the brightness toggle from Beautiful Widgets, I saw that the two options were 11% and 100%. Is this just the widget, or is the stock ROM set up to keep brightness at this minimum level?
I use my phone in the dark a lot and it kills my eyes to look at it for too long, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to get the brightness down any lower without switching to a custom ROM. I am rooted, of course.
Thanks for any ideas/solutions.

Brightness Widget Backlight, in the market should work. It's has configurable steps that can go down to 1%. I'm using it on CM7 and can get it lower than the lowest brightness setting.
You can lower it with Quick Settings, but a reboot changes it back. The lower brightness appears to be used when the display dims from inactivity. If you are already on the lowest factory brightness setting it can still dim some more. Thats the only purpose I see of it.
I use Brightness Level from the market and it allows you to go lower than stock does. I believe that it keeps settings after reboot as well.
Sweet, awesome replies.
Lookup screen filter, and should be on the market if I remember correctly.

I just installed and tried Brightness Level and it doesn't allow brightness levels to go below the lowest stock level. I see no purpose to that widget since the Power Widget for android allows brightness level adjustment.
I'd love something that allows for true adjustment from 1% to 100% on the stock ROM.

Screen filter rocks - been using it since I got my D3 back in November.

[Q] non-root: even lower display brightness?

Look for an app called "Lux Auto Brightness" on the Play Store. There is a lite version that you can try out. It's allowed me to go in the negative brightness and it works pretty well.

thanks. don't suppose this will work with locale...
maybe i'll have to write my own pluggin
I haven't used Lux but I really like Screen Filter for the same job: it has a huge range of dimming up to total blackness and can turn off the capacitative button backlight (requires turning the screen off and back on) which is a big deal when viewing a dimmed screen in a dark room. And the full version is free and ad-free as well.
thanks again for your replies. looks like Lux works with locale.
but... it's not quite working for me yet (setting to negative values of brighness at certain times, etc doesn't seem to work)
i'll keep trying. thankfully there is a trial version

[Q] Auto brightness doesn't work

Hi
The "Adapt to lighting conditions" is checked, but it doesn't really adapt. I have to manually change the slider to adjust brightness.
Looks like a bug. Not sure if there are any other settings to make.
Is this a known issue? Any workarounds?
Thanks.
Farhad.
The slider sets the maximum brightness of the screen, not the minimum. Hence, in order for the auto adjust to work, set it to the max and tick the check-box.

seems to work more like a brightness scale kind of thing. not only sets max, but minimum as well.
it'll always adjust when the box is ticked, but the slider determines how bright or dark biased it is.
It's a sliding window of brightness ranges, which should be good news to anyone who's felt that autobrightness on other phones swings too far in either direction. Now you can customize to your own taste.
Personally the sweet spot for me with good compromise between use in low light indoors, daylight and office lights is about 25% - the slider button just above the second "g" in "lighting conditions"
Remember though that changing White Balance settings will darken the display, and you'll need to boost brightness to get decent contrast again.
Use Lux Lite from the playstore. It lets you individually "link" a specific brightness level to a specific lighting condition, which the app then remembers and automates.

What do you mean "Source"?
That's how it work[s|ed] on my Xperia U, Xperia M, Xperia SP and now on Xperia Z3C.
Not proof enough?
It works, but doesn't work well. When I wake up at night the brightness level goes lower but not nearly low enough. I have to manually reduce the brightness to the lowest level. When the day starts, I have to manually increase the brightness. Not ideal, not a deal breaker either. Hopefully Sony addresses in the next update.

App that uses brightness toggles?

Hi,
Not sure where the correct place is for this, so thought that I'd put it here.
I am looking for an app that controls brightness. I like the brightness of my phones to be dialed down to around 40%. I find it most comfortable for my eyes. Yet when it is bright out, I need to make the screen brighter. This means that I need to go in and manually adjust the brightness. I don't like to have the phone set to automatically adjust the brightness.
I'd like to find an app that allows adjusting brightness by icon. I don't want one that has one icon that toggles through a bunch of preset brightness levels. Instead, I want an app that can have different icons for different brightness levels. That way, if I wanted to toggle the brightness to 60%, I could tap an icon that does that. Then I could have an icon set for 30% to set it back.
Anyone know of an app that does this?

Lux, if properly configured, could do that for you.
I think I understand what you're going for. I use Power Toggles (Dev: Painless Apps), and one of the toggles on the widget is for brightness and I have it set to 3 settings when I touch it; 20%, 40% and 100%. It's not possible to set each new brightness widget for individual brightness presets, unfortunately, but I don't see how it would be difficult to just make some predetermined settings for your brightness.
By now you should have a pretty firm idea on what level of brightness you prefer throughout your day so maybe you can use this app and have 2, 3 or more presets. It's really simple to use, I have it set to 3 settings and touching the widget to get to the brightness I want at that moment is super quick and not difficult at all.
You can see in the screenshot I use the widget at the top on my home page. Brightness is among the other toggles I use on a regular basis. Much quicker to turn on and off things, IMO. It's right there on my home screen so I don't have to pull my notification window down. I hope this helps.
I just use Auto Brightness setting. I set the brightness slider at 40% and the phone will auto-adjust the screen to keep it at a relative 40 indoors and outdoors.
I think this is what you're looking for:
