What do people find the most efficient way of deciding between ambient display and manual brightness?
Ambient display gives a pink tint when on low brightness manual does not.
Manual brightness is a little brighter than ambient display so is this having a negative impact on battery.
What are your thoughts on this?
I meant to say Adaptive brightness
I personally like adaptive brightness, and leave it on. I don't turn my brightness down enough ever for the pinkish hue to bother me. The pros with having the brightness adjust automatically outweigh the cons for my usage.

Yup. I don't want to have to pull up my brightness toggle every time I need the screen brighter or dimmer. Wish it had adaptive texting, adaptive calling, adaptive all things etc... I like auto everything

I would agree however I think every rom has brightness control via the status bar so changing your brightness is very easy, obviously if you don't want to flash then yeah it would be tedious to change.
I've never been a fan of any sort of brightness slider as it was always distracting seeing it change brightness, so I like to just manually change it.

For me adaptive brightness is kept off. I have my brightness:
indoors around 20-30%
outdoors: 40-50%
in a dark room completely pushed down to the minimum.
The display is bright enough at these levels. I also have franco kernel which made me change the RGB to a cooler color.
I keep adaptive brightness off, it ruins the screen colors for me. Sometimes it looks fine, and sometimes it looks really bad.
I prefer manually adjusting my brightness via status bar holding anyways.
I then use screen filter if i really need my phone dimmer at night time in bed. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor
The reason you don't get the pinkish hue with adaptive turned off is because it simply doesn't get as dim. I haven't noticed a difference in max bright though.
I leave adaptive on slider at about half way.

From my time with a Nexus 6 the screen didn't seem any brighter on max brightness compared with the adaptive brightness. The screen just was not that much brighter than the Galaxy Nexus next to me at the time, and was far less bright compared to the iPhone 6+ with me at the time.
The screen really isn't that bright so I don't see how the adaptive brightness could give noticeable differences compared to setting it to maximum manually. I might be wrong.
I leave it on. And done.
I don't like it I had it on when I first got the phone. I tried to deal with the pinkish color. Not anymore I turned it off put my brightness at about 75. Now you can really see and take advantage of that beautiful quad HD display. If you keep adaptive brightness on you might as well have a 720p display. Now I do want dark everything like contact dialer and settings. That helps with the bright white.
Also is it just me or is the whites not really white? Even with my brightness turned all the way up. I still see some pinkish in it. I just noticed when I am inside it does not look that pinkish guess it was because I was outside.

Me too. But when outside and in the sun I need to change the brightness to 100%

Hi,
According the the literature the light sensor adjusts the backlight according the the ambient light available.
Is it just me but this doesn't seem to be working and yes 'Auto adjust backlight' is checked.
Regards.
I can actively see this working all the time, if you happen to hold your hand over a bit of the screen you'll notice it slightly fade. I'ts not a major difference but it's def there.

On my TD2 it is working, but the change in backlight are not so obvious, you have to pay attention to see it: the change is not instantaneous, it is gradual (over a 0.5s time maybe), and it does not change much (not as much as the powersaving no-activity backlight level, which is much lower).
The best way I have found to check if it work is to be in a moderately lit room, and cover/nucover the light sensor with your finger. You should be able to notice the small change in backlight level as you cover/uncover the sensor....
BTW, anyone knows if it is possible to tune the backlight level/ ambiant light function? I would like to keep the auto-adjust, but lower the backlight level when it is completely dark to the minimal setting (or even lower), similar to the powersaving level I was talking about above.
This very low level is not nice for watching movies or pictures (it skew the color rendering because white is not white anymore, it is yellowish grey), but I find it ideal for ebook reading in the dark (it saes the battery, it is not tiring for the eye, and it is not bothering for the sleeping beauty sharing my bed when I read late ;-) )

try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=440665
When I move around (indoor/outdoor), the screen brightness is very consistant (and colors are brilliant too), I persume the light sensor worked
but TD2 did not respond to my random playing of the sensor.. the finger trick did not work for me, but i don't care

Maybe a stupid question...but maybe you mistake the LED for the light sensor.
The indicator led is on the left of the speaker grid, the light sensor on the right...if you have ticked automatic in the backlight intensity (parameter/more/alimentatation section, backlight subsection), you should definitely see a change if you are under bright light and cover/uncover the light sensor just right of the speaker grid.
BTW, thanks fort the g-light application, it is working nicely!
Could even save battery, although maybe this is mitigated by having one more background process running for polling the light sensor data...
HTC's website says the HD7 has an "Ambient light sensor".
When I have the Brightness settings on "Automatically adjust", I do not see any changes to the screen brightness. Darkness and sunlight have no effect. Curious to know if others are having the same problem or if my phone is faulty.
Thanks
If I set mine to Automatically Adjust on either low/medium or high settings it does adjust according to ambient lighting.
Have tested by holding up to a light bulb on all 3 settings and have noticed the changes.
Thanks for your reply.
A bit more experimenting with a LED torch and it does seem to be working. The curve is not as I would like though. I would prefer the screen darker in darkness and brighter in the light much like my old iPhone. I was in full sun today and the screen still wasn’t full brightness. So with it on High and Auto off, the screen was brighter than when on High and Auto on. So Auto was bringing my brightness down to what seemed to be about medium levels making the screen a bit of a pain to see. I want full brightness in sunlight please. I am sure others will prefer this default setting though, especially those concerned about battery life. Hopefully a future software tweak will allow sensitivity and brightness curve adjustments. Until then, I will stick with the "high" setting and Auto off.
Thanks again.
Have same problem.. Automatic light have no effect on my HTC HD7 (unbranded, with and without nodo).
I totally agree, with me its more of a problem in the darkness. It is way too high when it is completely dark and its more obvious when I switch it from auto to "low" as the screen does become much darker.
Its something with either HTC or windows as my old touch pro 2 had the same problem, in complete darkness the screen would never go lower than 30%...
The light sensor on my hd7 never seems to work..they should implement the way it is on the iphone

Is anybody know is there light sensor available physical on HD7?
Heared on HD2 it work's fine. If it software issue then MS mast fix it.
yea my phones ambient light sensor doesnt work either i see no changes with the auto setting on.
Auto-Brightness works fine over over here - o2 debranded with NoDo update.
When i take the phone out of my pocket/case in sunlight, i notice about 2 - 3 seconds after I unlock it, it gets noticeably brighter and when comparing to "high" brightness without auto it's exactly the saem. Agreed though i would like it to be dimmer in complete darkness (in bed, for example).
I am curious if there is a registry entry that I can change to help with the highest and lowest settings. If I turn on auto it does adjust it slightly when I am inside, but when I am in the sunlight I can hardly see anything. If there is no light also it is still what looks like a medium setting making it very bright. I hope we can figure this out, it isn't a big deal but still BTW I am on TMOUS with NODO
Has anyone managed to get Adaptive Brightness to work on their Moto x? I have it switched on yet my phones brightness never seems to change even in near darkness or bright sun shine.
Found the answer here:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...-is-gone-adaptive-brightness-takes-its-place/
I'm glad you found the answer. I can definitely see the brightness change depending on the ambient light in the room, but it will stick to a more narrow "band" of brightnesses based on how you have the brightness set.
So I noticed that the screen isn't as bright as my Note 4 on high brightness , however when I have it set to auto and I'm outdoors it's night and day difference. It's much brighter under auto, even makes my note 4 (on high) seem like it's on medium brightness . Does anyone else notice this? Anyway to make it bright like this all the time? Because full manual brightness seems like medium brightness compared to other phones. A bit disappointed

That was already discussed in many reviews

Correct.
Manual brightness only goes to something like 450 brightness, but auto can go to 750.
No way to change that. Was mentioned in multiple reviews.
I was at the beach today and everytime I'd look at my screen it would start out really bright and then dim to like 90%. I wouldn't be able to get it bright until I locked it again. It was very annoying.
There is an issue with the auto bright on the Edge. Not sure if it is the same on plain S6 though.
There is? Mine seems to work as I would expect...
Yeah turn auto off and the phone will still dim in dark rooms and bright up if you shine a light into it. Also the Edge does not appear to be as bright at max as the standard S6.
What's going on with this thing? i always have to switch the screen on and off to get it to adjust to the current lighting. Everything about this phone is such a mess.
Do you have adaptive brightness turned on? My snapdragon did not work until I enabled that setting.

It might be a problem with the ambient light sensor on your unit. My S8+ does the same thing, other S8's don't. Get it replaced.
Iam pretty sure its somewhat normal. Auto brightness has never been great on Samsung phones. I realised this when i briefly switched to the Iphone xs. Its auto brightness worked perfectly. I find the adaptive brightness on the S10 plus to be terrible too. Its as if its either too dark or too bright and sometimes it changes without the lighting conditions changing. Its tolerable but its def nowhere near as good as my iphone xs. Its strange because you would think its a feature that would be easy to get right.
work great for me, better than my old S9
I found one issue. I have used a couple of screen savers with clocks on my night stand. They automatically dim the screen. I noticed every time after using them that the auto brightness was too dark. I figured out that since the phone was on auto brightness when the screen savers dimmed the screen, it was being factored into the averages and causing the overall brightness to be lower than I wanted. Now I try to turn off auto brightness before I use the screen savers. I'll probably set up Tasker to do it for me soon.

I've noticed the same thing, on my XS Max I rarely had to adjust the brightness but on the S10 I have to do it quite a bit compared to the XS.

I'm very happy with it. Especially the learning part. I like to usually have the screen dimmer than standard and after a few days it started to do this automatically.
Works like a charm I'd say.
I agree that the S10 does not seem to respond to ambient light well when setting the screen brightness, especially in dark settings. I have a Bixby Routine to set my screen to 10% at night and even then it's still too bright.
