[Q] Slow motion Video - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can the Nexus 6 record in slow motion? If not is there an app that is recommended or is it that the camera is not capable?
Thanks

I've been looking too but I haven't seen an app to record. Only option I could find for slow mo is a video maker app like viva video

The camera is very capable, however, Google decided it wasn't important enough to include in its camera app. Let's all wait in expectation of the next staged rollout bringing yet another "should have shipped with" feature

[VIDEO] Google Nexus 7 - Camera Test & Review

Thanks for the review, it looks like a decent camera under the more extreme tests you performed. I say this as most would use the cam for hangouts or Skype only.

Having used it for some video chat, this camera is barely even suitable for that. Unusable indoors under low light conditions.

I can understand the image quality suffering in doors with low lighting, but why would the frame rate drop so much? That seems like a glitch/software issue.

I agree. It was not what I had anticipated. I'm pretty fluent in cameras and photography, and there isn't really any reason for the camera hardware to do this, it's obviously software related. I plan on trying other apps to get a better handle on things.

I'd agree that the camera is good for what it is. It's definitely only viable for things along the lines of skype and google hangouts. It seems to have an issue with autofocusing as well but that could be software.

Could it be using some sort of frame-averaging algorithm in an attempt to reduce noise? Like take (30/7=4.29) four frames and average the noise out giving one good frame per four samples?
Thanks reverendkjr
Quality looks quite good.
I have Tango video call app installed on the Nexus 7 and on my Galaxy Note - comparing them side by side, looking at my face, there is more sharpness and detail from the Nexus 7 video (whether I'm using WiFi or 3G on Note), and I had always thought the Galaxy Note did quite well with its front-facing camera (certainly is better than the iPad 3!).
So I think Google has done a good job with this front camera - 1.3 MP vs. the Galaxy Note 1.9 MP.

I plan on taking a look at Tango, Skype, etc on this device in a later video. I had no idea that the Galaxy Note camera was 1.9MP. What an odd size.

exactly my point - not sure if this is a skype issue or a nexus 7 issue! i thought i could use this to skype when i am at airports, etc as i travel a lot. Unfortunately no, i am back to using my huge laptop or the tiny screen of galaxy nexus!

I'm getting similar results when using skype on different wifi networks. I think it may be a camera driver issue. Not sure. I haven't tried it with Tango or any other app just yet.
^^ has anyone tried with google hangouts or gtalk video or something? I am sure google tested this on atleast their own video services before launching the product. Skype does not officially support nexus 7 yet so it could be just a skype issue

[Q] Slow motion video

What specs does the N6 offer in turns of slow motion video capturing?
Bump. I have the same question. Seems that none of the reviews explored the camera settings. Any update on this?
Everything I have seen has said that it takes video at 30fps
As far as I know, slow motion requires more frames per second. So I'm thinking that's a no on slow-mo. I could be wrong though.
The only spec i see is 4k @30fps.
I hope the stock camera app will allow for 1080P or 720P at either 60, 120, or 240fps. This is really a make or break decision for me, but seeing as though there are no frame rate specs for the other resolutions yet I will probably just have to buy it and see. I'm sure the devs will have at it if it does not come factory, although I hope it comes stock.
I found this quote at techtimes.com, If true I hope for at least 720p @60fps+
"The Google Nexus 6 uses a 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS (opitcal image stabilization), dual-LED flash, autofocus, 4K video recording @ 30 fps, 1080p video @ 30 fps, and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera."

I don't know if this video is legit, but here's a youtube video supposedly shot by the Nexus 6, 1080p @ 120 fps:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq7XPDsnuXk
i'm sure that video is fake. There is no proof that the video came from a nexus 6, let alone any mobile device.

The snapdragon 805 is capable of slow motion video. Even if it isn't available out of the box, which I kind of suspect it will be, I wouldn't be surprised to see some enterprising developer figure out a way to make it happen.

Even my 2 year old Note 2 does slow motion video but the Note 4 slow motion still does not capture audio with the slow mo video or do it as well as the iPhone sadly. It would be great if the Nexus 6 could do slow mo with audio & had some cool video effects like the Note line..:good:

Agreed. Since the api allows for developers to gain access to it like never before I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we see it. If I'm not mistaken the one plus one phone has slowmo recording and it uses the same camera. It's just something that needs to be implemented in the software.

Even the reviewers in many of the reviews that came out yesterday seemed surprised at how basic the camera app on the N6 is. RAW capture is the big new thing with L but the camera app doesn't capture it. Either Google has a big update in store or developers will find their own way. There have already been numerous example improvements shown with lcamera.
Anyone with a device in hand yet try any 3rd party camera apps?
You have to remember the guy who posted about the api'$ and taking raw pics it was with nexus 5 and a camera app he wrote ... won't be long b
efore some apps have it though i am sure
Here is his git hub so his camera can be used
https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera/
Here is the write up
http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-5-lollipop-camera-api-samples-540858/
since it has the same camera as the one plus, would installing the camera apk from it possibly bring slowmo recording or will it have to be written into the frame working?

Double Bump. The answer to this question is what will decide whether I buy a nexus 6 or a note 4.
---------- Post added at 10:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:36 PM ----------
Can someone with a nexus 6 try the app 'Open Camera' by Mark Harman (hopefully not the actor ) and hit the settings (gear) icon, Photo and video settings, Video frame rate, change it to 60 or 120 and then record a video. In theory this should bump the video up to a higher frame rate and then playback should be slow motion. Just a guess here but it is worth a try. Also I doubt this app is using the new 5.0 APIs so it may not be a true test.
Edit: better yet try this app that is designed for the 5.0 API. https://github.com/PkmX/lcamera

Cool suggestion; just tried the Open Camera app and video recorded at 720p with 120 FPS enabled but the playback appeared normal on device. I'm going to try and run the video on my PC and see if I can find if it actually recorded in 120. I'll also try that other app and get back to you.

Cool! Keep me informed.
I tried the open camera as well as that L camera, I was able to change the framerate in the settings but it still records at 30 fps so no luck there sadly! I really hope we can get a slow motion app working someday, it's an awesome tool from time to time.

For the N6? Manual Camera! Lovin this app! It's still a work in progress, but it is a very cool app.
Manual Camera

I switched from Manual camera to Camera FV-5, which also uses the new APIs (so it can output DNG). It is a lot more polished and stable than Manual Camera.

Manual camera capture in 4:3 and you cant change quality and HDR seems very broken or non functional.
Very slow shutter rate, aosp and google camera is so much faster, Manual Camara not worth it at all.

It seems you have missed the idea of the app. It's called MANUAL CAMERA!
You don't change "quality" settings. You don't have HDR mode. Those are AUTOMATIC modes. This is a MANUAL application that allows you to adjust MANUAL settings like ISO, Shutter Speed, Over/Under exposure, white balance, etc. If you want all the "programmed" or "automatic" settings that come in the camera app, then use the camera app!
And if your shutter rate is slow, it's because you have a SLOW SHUTTER SPEED selected!!!!
Complaining about an app that is doing what it's supposed to do, is epitome if stupidity!
ARGH!!!!!!!

The app works perfectly fine on my Nexus 6 and I really like the manual options. Too bad it's not possible to edit the raw images on the phone yet.
And the low fps isn't a problem on a phone for me because the auto focus isn't that fast anyway.
A timer for timelapse photos could be a nice feature.

My sense is there are some very serious issue preventing slo-mo. That is, slo-mo you want to share because it would be close to garbage as it stands.
I shoot video frequently and was very unhappy when I got my N6.
- signal to noise (S/N) is not good on this device at this stage of the game. It simply is noisy, and it is correctable in software. Until then, slo-mo will be very nasty if anyone is brave enough to try to encode it.
- exposure compensation in video mode is poor - if you shoot a video of a person sitting in front of a blank wall (or a sky) and slowly pan up and down - you can see the exposure compensation "clicking" in stairstep manner as the device adjusts to brightness changes. It needs to be silky smooth or video looks like crap. It can be corrected in software.
- you can workaround the exposure issue by using a third party app which locks exposure compensation - but shooting video with locked exposure compensation is not a good solution.
my opinions.
@warriorpluto I couldn't agree more...I was hoping that there be at least a working port of maybe lenovo, sense 6 camera,z2 or z3 camera...maybe when more devices get lollipop well be able to enjoy the nexus camera...but I suppose for now the google camera shall do for now lol smh

Manual Camera just came out a few weeks ago, but it's by far been the best for me (a camera junkie).
It's best used if you're used to the settings on a DSLR, but has an awesome auto setting and the fastest auto-focus i've seen yet on the N6.
So is the best camera app "Camera FV-5" with Cinema FV-5?
Just cleaned up in here. You guys can take the political debate to a different forum, please. I have absolutely no idea why this subject got brought up in camera thread (actually I do, but I'll deal with the certain member(s))......on a development site.
No need to discuss what I just cleaned in here. Please keep it on topic.

Instagram Story Camera Quality on Turbo

Hello good afternoon
I bought the maxx bike about 3 days ago, and it's an excellent cell phone, except for some things that are not optimized like the performance of the battery, which is solved with greenify.
I come from a motorola G1 and Alcatel idol 3, and I am astonished that the video recording on the moto maxx is inferior or similar to the one of these cell phones, I still can not find any app that will benefit you :/
Find an app that really took advantage of the photos, like the bacon camera or the HDR snap camera, but I still can not find an app that makes me satisfied with the video recording :/
Do you recommend any app for video recording?
A query, I occupy many social networks, and I just realized that when I try to record a video in stories is really horrible, it seems recorded in 240p, you know why that happens?
Edit: Here I found people with the same problem https://www.reddit.com/r/droidturbo/comments/57yy4p/instagram_story_camera_quality_on_turbo_1/
Greetings and thanks.
Your answer is in that thread:
I had the same experience with the photos as you described. Videos just look like garbage. FYI I just found out you can upload from your camera roll if you swipe down while in the story camera. I’ll test the quality and see if it is better when taken with the normal camera first.

I have been uploading from the camera roll and have been getting much clearer uploads compared to shooting in the app. I only use the main camera so I can't comment on the selfie camera. I imagine the app just is not optimized for the og turbo's camera. Maybe it will get better but I might have a new phone by then.

But currently the application has the option for live videos and just the rear camera looks horrible in this, while the front looks like you should see.
He sent several messages to instagram but received no response on the problem; This is precisely why I do this query here.

Are you running a custom ROM -- if so have you tried OTHER camera apps which are available? For instance, I have one of the Moto G cameras running on my Moto Maxx. There are others. Do they all have the same issue?
