Root Gone Wrong - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a verizon htc one m7, and I unlocked the bootloader and s-offed using sunshine. I flashed a rom to make it a google play edition and when it loaded, nothing works. Recovery mode is a black screen that says google and has a small lock at the bottom. I can get to the bootloader but I can't reflash anything using fastboot because it says I don't have root permissions. Please help. Thank you

Please provide more detail: it doesn't boot? Apps are crashing?

It looks like the stock recovery which make me believe you have not flashed a GPE rom but a GPE RUU?

What are you trying to flash exactly? From fastboot you can only flash RUU/firmware (in "fastboot oem rebootRUU" mode) and recovery using "fastboot flash recovery name_of_file.img"
because it says I don't have root permissions.

Doesn't make sense at all
fastboot never ask/need root permission. Root is ROM related and the ROM isn't even booted at this point so how could it be possible?
Looks like you are not understanding correctly some concept here, better to read a little more or ask your question here

After flashing TWRP recovery, bootloader shows TAMPERED?

I'm a bit curious why my bootloader shows "TAMPERED" after flashing TWRP custom recovery.
I have the HTC One developer edition so I thought this kind of stuff (i.e. flashing custom recovery images) was OK?

Don't know for sure, but I thought this message showed up after I unlocked the bootloader on my consumer HTC One.

Yeah, I thought that was a warning for consumers who unlocked their bootloaders but I thought a developer edition wouldn't have this because it's meant to be fooled around with, etc.
Didn't show up until I rooted.

It shows tampered for when you change your boot.img.
I'm pretty sure the tampered message happens when you flash any recovery other than stock.
Not a big deal unless you need to return your phone in which you flash stock recovery and relock.

How do you flash stock recovery? After I do this, will it AUTOMATICALLY relock?
Thanks
It even shows TAMPERED when you fastboot anything. You don't even need to flash anything, a
fastboot boot recovery.img
is enough to tamper with the boot loader. Was disappointed at first but that won't void your warranty anyways and once we got S-Off we are done with it.

You flash the stock recovery just as you would TWRP/CWM using fastboot. No, you would have to manually relock your device (using HTCdev) as flashing the stock recovery will not automatically lock the device.
Thanks for the information everybody.
Does the tampered warning cause any other problems?

Wouldn't the answered be, because you did tampered with it?

Yeah, I understand. I actually rooted the phone for something but now I realized I didn't actually need to.
If I wanted to completely restore the phone back to factory condition, how can I do that?
I still want to keep the factory unlocked bootloader of course... (since it's the developer edition)

[Q] So does the method of rooting the normal HTC One work on the Google edition?

My HTC One just came in and i'm switching from iPhone so i am currently very inexperienced on the android platform. If the rooting method is the same, I am set, but if it is different, i might need some additional help if possible

right now you'll just have to try.
fastboot oem unlock to unlock the bootloader
then push a custom recovery
then install supersu.zip just like we do now.
The only unknown is do custom recovery we have now work on the GE phone or do we need a new port

I'm also coming from an iPhone and thus a beginner...would this suffice for simply unlocking the bootloader and rooting? I have no plans of flashing any ROMs yet. I mostly just want root access for Tasker and Titanium backup.
Thanks.

I don't know I've never used a toolkit in my life.
It's trivial as far as rooting most devices goes.
unlock the bootloader
flash custom recovery
flash supersu.zip

One last question. Would unlocking the bootloader/flashing the recovery and supersu.zip be the same on the Google Edition as on the stock HTC One?

You should be able to run a RUU, but I would unlock the bootloader, then flash TWRP, then a Rom. If you can reach fastboot then you shouldn't be worried.
I dont even think you can run custom recoveries without an unlocked bootloader.

I'm on HTC-one-sprint IRC node if you can chat that would be awesome.

How do I unlock the bootloader from within the bootloader. I don't have a ROM on the phone. Can I hard reset? I've been struggling for a while on this.

since your phone is "relocked" im assuming that you have unlocked it before. Just unlock it like the first time.
if you forgot how to do it then heres another video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2N7G9lJiTo

I would do that but I inadvertently wiped and now there's no ROM on my SD card and I can't get one back on there. IRC is a chat you can get there by using http://webchat.freenode.net/ and using Channel HTC-One-Sprint.

Flash it back to stock using a sprint RUU (Rom Update Utility) . search the sprint HTC one forum for it download it to your computer and run the application (RUU) from your computer with your phone in bootloader mode with fastboot selected (highlighted) connected with the use cable. It will take approximately 10 minutes to flash. Thus will restore your phone to stock (factory). Make sure it's a Sprint stock rom for the HTC one. After it's back to stock. Unlock it.. Install TWRP RECOVERY. Download and copy the custom rom of your choice ( suggestion: VIPER ONE 1.1.0) to phone storage using the usb. Disconnect phone from computer and boot into bootloader and select recovery and wipe data.. Both caches and system then go to install and flash rom. Also make sure you flash superuser too before flashing the custom rom. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need help getting your phone functional.

With so less information,
No
Try to describe your situation a little more and post the output of fastboot getvar all (except imei/sn)
Are you using a Sense rom or a GPE rom? Is the unlock token flashed correctly but you are not prompted with the unlock screen? Is your phone recognized by your computer? Do you have installed the drivers correctly? etc etc etc....

[Q] Replacement Phone Can't S-Off and Unlock

So I have had an HTC One m7 for about a year now, but I got a warranty replacement in the mail because the mic broke. I've been trying to unlock and S-off the new phone, but I can't seem to be able to do it. I have tried using the rumrunner S-Off, but I get an error. I've tried flashing TWRP, but whenever I try to flash the recovery, I get an error that says "<remote: signature verify fail>" when it checks the signature. I've tried flashing CWM instead of TWRP, reinstalling drivers and everything, but nothing works. The phone is the Verizon version of the m7 running Android 4.4.2 with Sense 6. Is there any way to get this to work?
Also, when I plug the phone into the computer it always comes up with the "installing device drivers" popup, and then will usually fail installing the Mass Storage and MTP drives because it says the phone was unplugged, even though it wasn't

Suggest you try the Verizon HTC One Forum, they are more familiar with your phone.

You need s-off to unlock the bootloader, (because verizon phones cant be unlocked from htcdev.com). Try any other method described in the verizon forum, i.e firewater s-off. You can't flash the recovery with a locked bootloader.
