I do a lot of homework comparing specs when shopping for devices, but always forget to consider accessories.
I guess I am also cheap, but spending 75$ + on smartphone holder seems silly. So, like with my GNex it's time to build docks and stands again.
More will come, this time with turbo charging and Qi instead of pogo pins.
This stand was a quickie until I get a chance to do more serious tinkering.
The section base is from an old broken and undersized universal stand
The main bracket is from some IKEA cabinet I cant find link to.
The magnets are neodymium similar to BAC6 BAC6
The rest is random screws & bolts from the junk box.
I still need to cut/drill the bracket to allow for connection of car charger, pics to follow when I get access to tools next week. It holds good on kevlar back especially with the slight support from bracket lip underneath. Finding a good suction surface in the car is another story...
I open the floor to questions.

Thus the home-made in the title.
There are a little bit less than ZERO accesories for sale here in Norway,, and I enjoy tinkering.
If you check out the Galaxy Nexus forum there were many people creating their own cool docks and chargers.
I don't use the phone as a status symbol, so it doesn't bother me.
I won't switch to an iPhone just for the accessories so I gotta make my own.

I respect your stance about status symbols, and I applaud you for taking the time to invent your own car mount. I don't think I would have the patience or capability.
It would be pretty neat if you integrate a QI charger into that

You are right, that would be cool. I wish they would make a screen protector that wraps around the back of the phone and connects into the battery-- the screen protector could be a mini solar panel, and any light the screen sees would be converted in to energy. How about that for an idea?

that's an interesting thought. But the issue with be the solar panel but the circuitry to regulate and control the power. A phone case would be thick enough though. Intergrate seven Qi wireless solar power charging. Boom!
Edit: I used speak to text to write that. You have failed me Google. But I'm not fixing it, figure it out
Nice bit of handy work. How comes you didn't just go for one of those universal type holders? There's plenty available on the market with most shipping to Norway?
Either way, good work on the one you made :good:

Not sure when or if Defy will get its own Deck Dock. But my wife got me these somewhat useless business card holders. However, as they're steel, I stuck a magnet to the back, put in my Defy and voila! Deck Dock!

No... well, OK: lousy pictures but you get the picture. First shows magnet, second "docked" Defy. (Magnet came from Radio Shack).

Wouldn't the BB Torch's charging dock suit?
Hi all,
Within weeks I'll receive my first Android phone, after 5 years using WM. Really hope to get adapted to this new platform. It's that I'm that lucky guy who has happened to win Clove's Motorola Defy giveaway competition .
Anyway, this is purely theoretical, but I have noticed that the Blackberry Torch 9800, closed, is slightly bigger than the Defy, in all 3 dimensions. Besides, its charging dock + home charger (you'll be able to find some of them on eBay, like e.g. this one) takes the Torch in landscape mode, and seems to have its male micro-USB port more to the right side, related to its center, which could match the Defy's. Don't know whether it bears a magnet or not, though. Or, if it is be placed in the same location as required by the Defy sensor. Despite all 'ifs', I wonder if the Defy would fit in.
Anyone here would be brave enough to try one of those and see if it fits?
Just my 2 cents...
Regards,
Carlos
Do you have a BB Torch to compare? The USB adpater would have to be in the same orientation as the Defy's, which is "upside down" (narrow edge up). You'd have to have room to move the USB cover aside on the Defy too.

Unfortunately, not. It was pure speculation. Maybe someone here can make a simple test...
According to Mobilefun.co.uk, this thing should fit the defy as well...
Anyone feel like taking one for the team and putting their claims to the test? Looks like a nice dock but I'm afraid that A) it won't fit snugly and B) the usb cover will get in the way.

It might be worth asking them if they can provide photos to back up their claim.
It's in their best interest after all as I'm sure a few of us are interested in finding a decent desktop dock for their Defy.
What? Milestone (Droid)'s dock?
I don't see how the Milestone's dock would suit the Defy, since the former's micro-USB port is to the left, whilst the latter's is to the right.
I might me heavily wrong though (as usual)...
Regards,
Carlos
Anyone had any luck finding a dock for this thing? I am interested as well.
Some guy's come up with a DIY Dock, credits to uploader
Sorry can't paste links so go to youtube and type in "Motorola Defy media dock"
Looks neat
It's made of cardboard - cereal box style. Good effort tho.
Could be a market for aftermarket stands if someone wants to make them... worked for a guy on maemo.org for the N900. He made them out of laser cut wood and sold them via an online shop he set up. Was very popular.
Considering one of these docks
There are lots of docks for the droids and milestones but none designed for the defy yet. But I did come across a couple candidates that I am considering and wondered if anyone had tried either of them yet.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DM4KLW/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A2LD2YC4L2Z2RO
http://www.clingo.com/home-and-office/universal-podium/
I am leaning towards the first one listed from amazon but the second also looks pretty nice. Neither has a build in charger that will line up with the defy but they have plenty of open space to allow for a usb to plug in.
I use a Clingo which is simple. It doesn't have the magnet required to automatically activate dock mode, of course.
I ordered a cheap desk stand from eBay, for the galaxy SII and the 4x HD fits perfectly!
I also customised a dock for my car, got fed up with trying to squeeze the phone into a rubbish looking universal mount, then connecting a trailing cable. So I hid the cables hard-wired behind the dash, and dremel'd the dock to shape, bent it with a hot air-gun, clamping it in a vice. Getting the connector to stay in place took a hot glue gun. (leaving a cavity underneath means I can still reach my headlight switch, not that i use it, I leave it set to on 100% of the time on the Volvo, as it makes no difference - the daytime running lights are set up to be the main dipped headlights anyway!)
I think now I've got a working prototype I'll buy another and redo it a bit neater. (The dock is only about £4 from china!) as the plastic has reacted a bit to the heat!
The dock is simply squeezed into the gap in the dash trim, it holds fine.
The phone jiggles a bit and it isn't angled towards the driver quite right, but it's fine, and certainly easier than having to fiddle the phone and charger in every time I get in the car!

look great !!! cool man ^^
I Should add, people have commented on two things - firstly in a crash it's going to fly out very easy and be dangerous (Though surely any cheap phone mount will also! Only something like a Brodit will hold it very securely)
Secondly (and quite worryingly!) Perhaps the charging socket will wear out from sitting wobbling around?
Nice but isn't mobile blocking your air-conditioning channel?
Sent from my LG-P880 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, but sitting in the flow of air wasn't a big deal for me. Most universal mounts mount onto a vent!
I since removed this! Firstly, the phone wobbles quite a lot - I was worried that the charging socket could get worn out.
Also, in the event of a crash it would fly around quite easily!
I now use a Clingo, but I modified it by screwing the tip of the ball-joint onto a Brodit base, so it's held next to my stereo
Hi, can you please give the url for the dock you bought ?
Thanks.

I have one like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sync-Charge-Cradle-Dock-Station-Charger-For-Samsung-Galaxy-S2-S3-S4-i9300-i9500-/231021608377?pt=UK_BOI_Electrical_Components_Supplies_ET&var=&hash=item35c9f5fdb9
Though I've now added a shim of card (taped on the back part with black electrical tape) to hold it at just the right angle.
Just to clarify, I'm just talking about desk stands here, the car cradle idea was just me bodging a desk stand, but I don't use that any more.
I doubt a real G S2 car cradle will hold the 4x, the width would have to be the same and I'm sure it's not!
Firstly, let me congratulate Sony for allowing a lanyard to be attached! My Galaxy note doesn't have a lanyard hole and neither did my last Desire Z, Desire or HD2.
They are sooo useful for getting phones out of pockets by the strap, using the phone one handed or of course preventing the phone slipping out of your hand. And believe it or not, the Xperia Z having one was a major reason in me buying it!
Anyway, does anyone have plans on getting a particular strap?
On amazon, some reviews of cheap ones mentioned them breaking, so I'm thinking of using a wii controller strap which may match my white Z quite well.
I'm very pleased to see it too. It's a great little feature - i have no idea why it disappeared from the market. I'm going to use the one that Sony provided with PSP - maybe something better if you guys find something worth recommending
The Wii strap is a great idea for a wrist lanyard
If I want a neck lanyard for any reason, I'll probably just use the one my work ID badge hangs on.
R: What lanyard strap will you use?
I don't understand why they didn't put one in the box.. It's a very cheap optional.

Lanyard straps are a very Japanese thing to use. I love them and this is another small thing that make the XZ a great phone.

I second the Wii remote strap recommendation. Been using it with my Note 2.
Using these ones:
Genuine UltraFire® High Quality leather led torch wrist strap lanyard tether UK
&
EDC Paracord lanyard wrist strap Mil spec 550 7 strand genuine US Gov contract (ACU camo)
If links don't work google for litetek-uk store
Also these rings seem really good for a phone use:

the lanyard option definitive sold me over. will be perfect for this summer. I do alot of boating, and killed a couple of phones at sea, usually intoxicated .
now I can fall in the sea with the phone in my pocket without killing it. also fitting a flotation device with the lanyard strap makes sure that it dont go to the bottom of the sea...
after the Xperia V i will never go back to a non-waterproof phone..

Ye, it formerly was there, but an admin decided to move it a while ago to Q&A, because the threads subject... was a question
So it has already started, people are loosing and damaging their cradles already. This is going to create a need for a new cradle or another way to charge and sync the unit.
Ever since I first opened the box to my gear I wondered WTF Samsung was thinking with this cradle. There has to be a better way, and hopefully I have found one.
On the back of the watch are 2 small screws. My goal is to use 2 tiny magnets to hold a cable to the back side of the watch via these screws. This will make the cable MUCH smaller and no longer require a massive case to be carried around.
Current status:
Contacted a few companies and have a few different connectors coming in to see what will connect best.
PCB design will all depend on the connector we go with
V1 case design is already started for the housing. I will be printing a few samples out with a makerbot in a week or so and will post up
I hope to have an entire v1 test unit done within the next week or 2. I would have this done earlier but I have a massive fluid mechanics midterm tomorrow then will be heading out of town for the rest of the week for work. I should be back in town on Saturday and will be sitting in front of the makerbot and a soldering iron all day. Please stay tuned for updates.
Also all criticism is welcome, tell me what you think, the only thing I ask is to make it constructive. If you think this is a stupid idea because it will not work for some reason, let me know and why. I am a mechanical engineer with a concentration in structural analysis. I know only what I have taught myself about electronics so I admit I dont know as much as many others.
***UPDATES***
10/31/2013
Currently working on getting sync capabilities working. I have a feeling Samsug did 1 of 2 things
1. Chip requirement like apples cables to allow sync
2. Power on data line
Either way this weekend I should be able to get the sync feature working or at least have parts on order to do so. First run on the spring loaded contact pins were pretty good, but I am going to need something longer. Once the case goes over the PCB board they will no longer be able to connect with the back of the watch. Here is what I am working with at the moment.

Points for effort !
Got the 1st set of spring pins connectors in. They work but will not be long enough once a case is designed for the unit. Back to ordering more $0.08 1/16" pins!
Try to check the thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2493181&page=5
Pins which You found seems to be very nice and will work well, but regarding the magnetic mounting - check if the screws are magnetic - if they are stainless steel (which they almost for sure are) they will not be magnetic... so this will not hold... the other issue is if the watch has sensors inside they may not like the strong magnetic field...
Can't wait to be able to buy one lol

Happy new year folks
I've been looking for something like this for a while and have come up with nothing. I'm at the point where I think I have to buy two items and jerryrig them together to get what I want.
What I need is a gooseneck arm for my phone on my desk. The phone needs to be held on with a magnet and the gooseneck needs to be clamped to my desk.
Basically I want to combine this

with this
Every gooseneck I've ever seen has a clamp on the phone end. My thought is to glue the above circular magnetic mount to the gooseneck and then just cut away everything else with a dremel.
Has anyone ever seen what I'm looking for?
idk , scroll down 4-5 items on right side. not sure how it attaches. suction maybe? anyways just ran across after reading your post. good luck.

Thanks, I'd not seen that before! I'm not thrilled with the scissors style clamp though. My desk is about 1.5" thick and very smooth on top and underneath, I'd be worried that if the clamp is knocked the whole thing would pop off.

How did you find this? I swear, sometimes my wife, who sits behind me, and I can both do a search on each of our Windows 10 Pro desktops, in Chrome, using the same words, and get different results.
The Benks Magnetic Cell Phone Holder is completely, EXACTLY, what I have been wanting and looking for five months!!!!
Thanks so much!!!!
I just ordered the Benks Holder from amazon. I found it at aliexpress for six dollars less, but I keep stuff in my amazon shopping cart that all apply for free shipping and when I get enough of them to qualify I place the order (I'm not Prime).
Thanks again!!!
lol. understand about different results. i think google bases results from what you've searched for before. (since they keep every little scrap of info for years and years).
yay! glad that one fits the bill and you were able to find it even cheaper.:good:
for slippery desk surfaces , you could always put a small square piece of thin rubber between mount surface and desk surface. just a thought.
That arm had the desk clamp, but it also has a phone clamp. I need the phone to be held on with a magnet.
