Verizon texting app? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Hey everybody, I would like to know who still is using the Verizon texting app and how it compares, beats, loses to the other sms apps out there. I am using Google messenger since it was released and love its stability and mms send and receive through WiFi.

It's not pretty but it can send sms over WiFi and syncs your messages on all of your devices.

That seems pretty cool and similar to iPhone feature of sync texts on all devices.

It is considerably slower than a traditional SMS app (slower to launch and occasionally stutters) and you have to agree to Verizon holding on to your text messages for 90 days on their servers.

Recent updates make it look somewhat better. You can choose a grey theme or red one, and you can customize both app and convo background. as well as message bubbles.

It doesn't have animated gif support, though (at least receiving & viewing them)

I have tried all apps today and the best third party sms app Google messenger is the lightest at 12-15mb when hello sms is 35mb and textra is 156mb taking up a lot of ram also chomp sms.

Why not try Google's recently released stand-alone messaging app?

The ability to receive and send SMS over Wi-Fi is a great plus. I work in a basement that had no mobile signal.

It is finicky for sure.
Google messenger app? Same as the stock AOSP app on Lolipop. It's extremely limited (no size adjustments for MMS, etc.), I don't like the look, etc. I actually quit Lollipop almost solely because of this on my HTC One. I know I can use another app, but I'm into using the stock app.

VZ Messages plays animated gif files fine. I get these all the time from friends.

I like the app, it's not bad and offers a nice look and the features I need while texting.

Same here. It's pretty convenient having a iMessage-like (SMS or Wi-Fi) program that can be synched up across my Android and iOS devices plus my Windows PC.

My bad. I don't know why I thought that.

My #1 Android SMS Alternative - GoSMS

Thanks to Product F(RED), I have found my favorite texting app. GoSMS! You might have heard of it, you might have not, but so far it is 5x better than Handcent and 100x better than the Android SMS Default. Let us know if you use this app, and what you think of it here! Have a great weekend!
I love gosms. I've tried to settle for others and even for the stock messaging app but the themes are awesome. And the widget is cute also.

I liked it, but saw no reason for me to switch from my default which is smooth, clean, good-looking and straight-forward. But, yeah definitely a lot better than the alternative ones (handcent etc...).
Yep! For the Android Texting app, its a great example of "Too Simple." We love flexibility nowadays

Could you tell us Handcent-users what Go-SMS actually does better than Handcent? I don't see a big difference.
I use GoSMS to and i like the app.
I tried some other before like handcent sms but GoSMS is my favorite.
Handcent SMS causes some big lags for me. Furthermore there were some errors in displaying some MMS. When i tried GoSMS this bugs did not appear.
Great APP but there is a problem with it. if an SMS comes in and the popup windows comes on and you are not near the phone and the screen turns off, the popup goes away (as it should) BUT so does the SMS notification and the SMS is marked as READ. this means the reminder function of the program does not work.
How do I resolve this? Im on the EVO4G

For starters; GO SMS, unlike Handcent, doesn't look like a giant pile of sh*t being rendered onto your Android screen.

[Q] Wifi-only app that lets S1 and BB communicate?

I have a rooted/rommed wifi-only S1 and my GF has a Blackberry 9780. She is currently overseas for X amount of time and the only way we can talk is by calling each other which is extremely expensive, or using skype which means she has to borrow a friend's laptop or android device. She has service on her phone over there, unsure of what type of plan.
I came up with the idea of using my old BB 8330 and figuring out how to use BBM or something similar on wifi-only, but it turns out that 'ol phone doesn't have wifi on it. It's too bad I sold my last BB some time ago which was an 8530 and had wifi. Oh well.
Anyways, I'm now wondering if there's an app I can use on my S1 that she can also use on her 9780 that would allow us to text and or talk. Something like BBM that doesn't require me to have service or a data plan. I imagine there's at least one app out there that would do this and also be available to BB users.
Thanks.

I read somewhere that it uses your phone number but can't seem to confirm that.
I'm pretty sure we can use KIK but it's text only. I may be getting greedy with wanting text and talk, but having both would be awesome.
Does her phone have a browser? If so, you could use any site like ebuddy to talk. Or even get on something like palringo (dunno if there's a bb version?) but there must be something alike.

She has service and we *think* her data is unlimited. She also has a wireless router at her flat so wifi helps if the data is limited/costly.
We're trying to use apps over our current methods or using something browser based mainly for convenience. Something like whatsapp or KIK would work perfectly from what I understand, but they're text-only. Not a huge problem, but if I can find text+voice that would be great. Skype is normally the answer to that question but her phone, or more specifically her service provider, isn't compatible with skype from what I'm seeing.

Looks like the exact app I need and it's compatible with blackberry. Will give it a try. Thanks!
ETA: Looks like Blackberry devices can not use the VoIP feature yet but they say it will be available eventually.
Turns out you need a number for viber and my device is wifi-only. After some research I found that you can use any phone number that can receive SMS because it's for them to send you a registration PIN. I tried both my GV and Heywire numbers and haven't received that text on either one. :\

For now, stock app until I find something I like better.
I was using Textra on my S3 but it didn't want to work well with kitkat so I went to hangouts. I think hangouts could be a really good app, but right now its terrible in the way its organized. Contacts are a mess to sort through, and every google account you have has the ability to send messages which makes things very difficult to manage if you end up sending messages from more than one.
I'm not a huge fan of the stock app...kind of ugly, but it works well.
I use Textra and I love it.
Thanks for the info. I will try out those. I liked the stock app but was getting lag using it. It want bad but bad enough to drive me nuts. Lol

I really liked the stock app until I imported all of my old texts from my I7777 and then the lag was unbearable. Nearly a 2 minute wait. Now I'm using Hangouts. Not as many features, but no lag.
Textra
EvovleSMS (this is the one I use)
HelloSMS
I tried all the popular ones...Go SMS, Textra, hello SMS, Hangouts, Evolve, etc. Hated all of them. I ended up sticking with chomp SMS. It's from the same developer that made biteSMS for the jailbroken iPhone, so I'm familiar with it. Plus, you can customize the theme to your liking. It has all the popular features: popups, quick reply/compose, delay sending, scheduled sending, privacy, etc.
Ever since my SGS 2, I always end up back with Textra. Black theme. Light, fast, actively developed and has all the necessary features. It's not overblown and just does it's job well.
I've been using Chomp for a long time and have been very happy with it. I've been trying out the stock messaging app for a few days, compared to past Samsung messaging apps, I'm impressed, but I'll probably be installing Chomp again soon...
Are there any messaging apps or themes for a messaging app that would make it flat? No matter how much I edit Chomp or Textra it just still doesn't look flat.

I use hangouts as my stock mainly because I can directly chat with my Google contacts. I have little reception where I live but still have WiFi so I can message my friends with android over a hangout instead of an SMS. I also very much like the layout and Android Emojis. I never liked textra, chomp, or handcent.

using stock messaging app here , rooted with twrp recovery , I have popup enabled when I get a msg and phone is locked (swipe to unlock set) I click the msg but then the phone lags at the lock screen ,and hangs. anyone else having problems with this ? or know a way to correct it ?
to get out of it I have to swipe to unlock then open up the messaging app it wont let me click the msg I got from the lock screen .
Was using ChompSMS but was getting a bit slow, switched to EvolveSMS but it's still really buggy, using Textra now. Slim, fast, quick reply / compose and not bogged down with tons of settings. Simple theme & emoji setup too. Be sure to download Textra emojis from app store.
since we are discussing the messaging apps, has anyone been getting random message alerts on old messages in the stock app? Phone was sitting on the counter last night charging and I heard it go off. Came out to find an alert for a message from tuesday that had already been read. Had this happen once before as well...alert on a previous read message. Never seen anything like it
From the sound of your needs, it seems like the stock app would suit your needs best. Why not use it? I don't really understand why some people seem to force themselves to use third party apps if the native ones work fine. :what:

Only had the phone a weekend, so take this with a grain of salt. . .
Started stock obviously, but I got sick of Touchwiz on day 1 so switched to the Google Launcher.
When I did that, Google tries to take everything, (msg app included) so I started using Hangouts.
It is horrible. Really bad. The basic functionality is OK, but it is the other garbage that they stick in the way that annoys so much.
Sure- I could send this message using G+, but why would I, and now you've made me waste time telling you that.

Galaxy S does that by defaut (excepted led color + flash rates) since S3 i think (i was using Light Flow for that back then).
Yes, i'm using defaut app, best to keep things simple imo.

Another vote for the new Google Messenger. Substantially improved and I really like the Material Designyness of it
I use Hangouts, not the best but as I do as much or more instant messaging as texting and often with the same recipients the merged threads are an overriding benefit that keeps me coming back to it.
