[Q] wifi direct - Can anyone explain the use? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can use the wifi direct option in advanced settings of the wifi menu to pair to any other android. BUT, how do I use it natively to file share media to and from? I can do it via 3rd party apps but its a hit or miss.
For example I transfered an mp4 to an Xperia phone from my N6 and an mp3 vice versa using super beam app. But couldn't get it to work on any media from my N6 to galaxy s3?! I want to avoid downloading multiple wifi direct apps just to have one work per one model android and another for a different model. Not to mention the other android needs the same app(s) too.
If the native option can pair through a wifi direct feed to any android why then isn't there a native option in the choices when the send /share icon is pressed on media files??? Not even in photos is the option present. I can hit the share icon - after pairing to another android - and still no wifi direct option?

Did you ever find your answer?

[Q] Have you got Mezzmo to work?

Mezzmo is a DLNA server with transcoding capability. Has anyone been able to get the video option to work? Music and pictures are working great.
Mezzmo is by far the best DLNA server I've tried. It works perfectly with my Series 6 Samsung LED TV over Wi-Fi N. But I also experienced problems with my Samsung Galaxy S - until I found the right settings on some forum. After connecting your SGS to Mezzmo (it's better to have a fixed IP address for your SGS I suppose), go to Mezzmo's menu Media Server -> Media Devices (smth like that, 'coz I have a Russian version of Mezzmo), then find your SGS in a list of devices, double click it to open the Settings window, choose Samsung Captivate as profile and make sure that both checkboxes are checked (especially the one with transcoding options); I also set 800 x 480 as a max resolution on Performance tab; now it works perfectly for all video formats!
You do use Allshare?
I do exactly like you and cannot play video, only music and pics.
What could be wrong?

Nexus 7 Storage (lack off) and ways around this

Hi
I like my Nexus 7, but the lack of an SD card slot means that it cannot be used to its full potential.
All this talk of the Cloud from Google is wonderful - if they offer the feature in your country. Google music for instance is only available in the US.
I've not rooted since it would appear that this will hamper OTA updates + I simply don't have the time to read endless threads!
Audio Galaxy
For anyone not aware, 'Audio Galaxy' ( https://play.google.com/store/search?q=audio+galaxy ) is your personal music cloud, but it does require that you leave a PC switched on at home/work. You just point the server end 'helper' of this at your music collection, and install the App. Unfortunately, It does not support all formats, WMA Lossless for instance is not supported, neither is anything containing DRM, bit of a PITA. The app itsself is OK, but there's no tablet optimisation.
FTP Server
Copying video's over the cloud is not practical esp in the UK with its poor mobile speeds, lack of 4G, and in the case of a home-cloud, poor broadband upload speeds.
My phone has a 64GB SD card in it. When out and about, I always take the phone. I use FolderSync ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.full&hl=en ) to sync TV shows to the phone over wifi via a scheduled task.
I would use WiFi direct to push films to the N7, but this does not work between a Galaxy Note and the N7. Android Beam requires 2 NFC compatible handsets, and I read somehwere that it uses BT rather than WiFi to transfer stuff meaning its not suitable for videos.
If I choose to watch one of the videos from my phone on my tab, I just copy it over. Download FTP Server ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5yYXBmb3guZnRwc3ZyIl0. ) for your phone, and point it at your movies. Enable the phones WiFi hotspot feature, and start the FTP Server.
On the Nexus 7, start an FTP Client - good one in ES File Explorer ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en ). Setup a new connection, and point it at the IP Address shown on the FTP server running on the phone. (Note that unfortunately, this IP address changes since its allocated by your mobile network), Using the FTP client on the N7, copy films from Phone to N7. Turn off FTP Server and WiFi hotspot on phone.
NB: If you root (the phone) you can run an SMB server on it. The phone must do the sharing since there is no WiFi hotspot feature on the N7 (it has no connection to share!)
NB2: You need to have a mobile signal to be able to start the wifi hotspot! - otherwise the phone has no IP address.
Until WiFi direct starts working, I am stuck with the above. An app to turn the phone into a WiFi harddisk (where phone acts as a wifi access point rather than connecting to existing router) would be nice.

Check Plex in the market, great for video, music, and any other media stored on your home PC. PC left on at home works as at home server.
Cheers

Used in the past
Hi
I've used plex in the past and removed it because its clunky - especially the server end where you config everything. Anyway, I just had another go. Its still clunky! For instance it just created 3 sections for 'Home Movies', and 3 for 'TV Shows' I only have one folder on the server for each. It also does not allow you to remove the unwanted sections from the library. As a result on the N7, I end up with everything listed 3 times over. I eventually found the option to remove these, and have re-created.
In addition to that, despite that fact that every album I own has album art, it has not picked it all up. I don't think it reads folder.jpg files from the album dirs (standard mechanism on windows media player/center), relying instead on the jpg being present within the meta data for the track.
- It does not transcode music from WMA Lossless to a format playable on device. It will index everything, but none of it is playable from the Android client
- It does not support TV shows recorded with windows media centre
- It keeps reporting 'Server Error when trying to fetch data'
So... still pretty clunky all told!
Worth another try though, and it is better than the last time I tried it.
Nigel

Many thanks from Noob

Hello all!
Having received my Nexus 7 over the weekend I wanted to thank the community for all the help (unwittingly) provided so far. Despite this being my first android device, so far I've taken tentative first steps to getting it doing what I want and:
- rooted the device using the tool kit;
- got flash working (in firefox beta) for iplayer (works with browser in desktop mode only, but I think that's right?)
The intention is to use USB OTG to expand storage capacity and use the tablet for media consumption and connectivity when out and about. So Tasker has been downloaded (to set home and away profiles) and the readthrough on here digested (initially at least!).
Next steps: find a way (automated through Tasker) to allow the tablet to mount our NAS when at home, so that the media plays pick up all the media on it; and determine how to print from the tablet on the networked printer (hosted by the NAS).
Any clues on a smb client that can be automated on Tasker are appreciated, as are good media players with library functionality (hoping XBMC will handle movies in the future, but a good music player would be appreciated)
Many thanks once again and I hope that one day through my adventures I might be able to help someone else too.

HTC One - A little light on features?

Picked up my new HTC one yesterday, and comming from the S1, it appears its a tad lite on features out of the box
Now it may be just me not being used to HTC phones, but where are the "stock" apps
No obvious }-
File explorer
Media streamer. ( network to phone)
Drag down toggle switches
I can find ways to work round the toggle switches , but must admit its a tad frustrating
Also what is sense? All I see is some icons that are rather retro (I like)
Is something augment android, or another os. Tacked on?
Any help would be appreciated

Hi
Greetings,
I agree on ur first part about toggle switch
Their will be few toggle switch when you pull down notification bar and on the bottom click quick setting their will be few but not all( if its not their then I do not know as I havent used one but I have toggle switch on my HTC sensation)
About sense you can google it you will get proper explanation as of now sense is an UI
The look of the phone, icons, etc comes under sense, it has some nice feature as when you invert your phone in a call ringtone the phone gets to silent , etc for detail you will need the help of google.com

For toggle switches...download an app called "Power Toggles." It's free and it will add switches to your notification bar.

As another user suggested, you can try power toggles from the Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.painless.pc&hl=en
Alternatively you can try Notification Toggle from the Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.j4velin.notificationToggle&hl=en
Or even TogglePanel if you want to go the paid route:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.seifsoft.togglepanel&hl=en
Personally, I prefer Power Toggles...
For your file explorer, here are some recommendations:
ES File Explorer
Astro File Manager/Browser
I prefer ES file explorer as it's more feature-rich and I think it supports root (if I can recall correctly)
I don't exactly understand what you mean by media streamer? You probably do have various options (including built in HTC Link support).. Just let me know exactly what you're looking to do.. Transfer music files wirelessly from comp to phone? Control Youtube? Connect to some kind of TV?
If you have any other questions, just let me know.
The beauty of Android is it's so open! So almost whatever you want to do can be accomplished!

For streaming from PC/Mac to phone, search for emitapp

Install ES File Explorer/Astro File Explorer from the play store
Use the Gallery app which is in your apps menu, press the settings button (three vertical dots), then 'Media Servers' and voila!
Install Power Toggles from the play store
Problems solved
Sense is the Interface on top of Stock Android that HTC created. Similarly to TouchWiz which is Samsung's Interface on top of Stock Android
I also play my movies from a fileshare using bsplayer (it has a "network" mode where you can add your nas share). Works prefectly (fast forward, jumping). It also has subtitle support.

Desktop mode; apps that work well, apps that don't and bugs

I've been playing around with desktop mode quite a bit and overall it seems to be a good idea. With the exception of TeamViewer I could move my entire business day over to it quite easily. I'm using an Inapio hub and keyboard / mouse combo with a usb dongle.
Apps that I've found work well with it are:
1. All of the Microsoft apps. I mainly use the Outlook app and Microsoft Edge and have no complaints about either of them.
2. Enpass and Lastpass.
3. Most if not all of my banking apps work well.
Apps that don't work well:
1. Quite a few games. Some of the games that require taps don't recognise mouse clicks. Risk is one I can think of straight away.
2. TeamViewer (app-specific problem as it doesn't support remote desktop scaling from the Android app).
Bugs / annoyances I've found:
1. Quite often when clicking on buttons in browsers, email and other apps I have to click slightly off-centre to the left and below the button before the click is recognised.
2. When deleting the built-in apps from the desktop the rest of the icons don't auto-rearrange.
3. No auto-rearrange of icons.
4. Lacking a slideshow for the desktop background.
Do you use desktop mode and how do you find it?
How is performance and input lag? Is it smooth?
I couldn't get see Gmail. Which is a bummer since we use g-suite at work....
Apart from that it worked very well. My monitor has the most and keyboard plugged into it and the video about is a USB-C cable. When plugged into this the desktop is very well integrated with the most and keyboard working fine and the phone charging via the video cable as well. But as I said, no Gmail...
@Riio Performance is very good with no lag.
@palexr Yes, a bit odd that the gmail app isn't listed under the start menu. I think it must be about the only one that doesn't show up there. You could always use gsuite via a web browser?
One type of app that works well in desktop mode but not in phone mode is SIP / VOIP clients. I use Bria but have also tested Zoiper and both app stop running under the lockscreen; even with "ignore battery optimisation" enabled and yet Skype works perfectly.
Gmail app icon does not appear in the desktop, but if you receive Gmail notification and you click on it, Gmail will load. What I did was to pin to Task bar and now I have it in desktop. So all you have to do is to wait patiently for the notifications of your favourite apps to appear on the desktop.

Thanks, yes that worked - to a degree. I can open Gmail from the notifications and then pin it to the Task Bar as you say. However, clicking on the resultant icon will only open my private email and not my work one. However, if I get a work email, I get a notification which I can open and access my work emails - pinning that to the task bar will only open my private gmail.
So, yep it works, just need to send my work email an email.
Thanks.
What determines whether an app icon will appear or not in desktop mode ?
I tried it but could not find YouTube app for example in Desktop mode ? So how do I trigger other apps not shown in Desktop mode ?
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
What triggers the DPI used on an external screen? I have two screens - one 23 Dell monitor and one 23 Samsung SyncMaster TV/Monitor. Both support 1920x1080 however when I connect HM10P to a Samsung Screen I noticed the DPI is much lower than on the Dell one (same resolution).

Anyone know if there is a list of supported app in desktop mode, or some specific flag/tag to search for in Play Store. I'm interested also into Visio replacement and some PDF editors but can't understand what to search for.
I didn't understand if this mode is valid only for EMUI desktop (so that developers need to change their app to work specifically on EMUI) or a general Android optimization.
I found a way to add any app, though not all work properly.. Prime video for example, it loads, but video playback is just a black box..
Use another launcher (I used Nova), and open that launcher in desktop mode. Nova looks broken, but don't worry.. Double click (left mouse) on the blank home screen and app search opens.. Find your desired app, open it, then pin it to the bottom bar..
Enjoy
When using PC Mode is there a way to force fullscreen for 3rd Party apps.
I use the Huawei standard video player which is always fullscreen but for some videos there is no sound so I use VLC or MX Player. Cant seem to get rid of the taskbar below when using the other apps.

Dang. Was hoping it was something I was not doing.
Emailed their support requesting they add this. Hopefully they enable with a software update.

This is what bothers me, I've been using terrarium app a lot lately, and casting my screen to our tv works just fine but since its using wireless connection, image quality is somehow affected and also the auto motion plus wont work, movements arent that smooth(was accustomed to 60fps). Tried using the desktop mode and image quality did improve and the auto motion plus now works but movies on mxplayer is not going on full screen.
Autocad mate 10 desktop mode
Someone can tell me if autocad app runs with desktop mode on mate 10?
Tested yesterday the Easy Projection mode, a huge disappointment from my expectations to get rid of my Windows laptop.
The Microsoft Suite is barely usable, the documents are resizing correctly but Word, Excel, PowerPoint features are just a ghost of the rich applications I have on the laptop. Also the UI is clumsy with commands to be accessed in weird way.
Also the user experience is far from productive, with the right button click doing the function of the left button, no point and drag, no changing apps position in folders.
Dropbox app, files app etc are just a stretched version of the mobile one with a lot of empty space.
The only well functioning is web browsing, so I suppose relying on Google Docs will be fine.
Want to ask if does someone else have this problems, maybe need I to do some setup.
My desktop test
Today I tested the desktop mode.
I was quite amazed about what I saw.
A few things I did not like:
-citrix receiver did not work well
-rdp connections did not go well
-no VoIP apps possible because the user that is activated has no rights to the phone options.
I am looking for the possibility to change some settings for the desktop mode. I can't find the application "desktop mode" to elavate the rights.
Also the edges for the chrome browser are not as good as we would like to see. I will subscribe to the fora for the Huawei desktop mode to see if I can learn. Something there.
If anyone has tips for me please advise me.

i have problems with VLC, it works fine but playback controls dont appear on screen.
Perfect with stock video player but no audio in some videos
I use MX player, working 100% great
The three are full screen support, to do it go to the icon on the task bar and left button, then enable it.
Just wondering with the P20 series released, updated EMUI 8.1 have there been any improvements in desktop mode compared to the mate 10?
anyone know how to have desktop mode auto-launch when cable is plugged in, rather than having to choose desktop mode from status bar?
