When I tried to go on my phone this morning, I started getting an error message. It said that 'Com.android.phone' had stopped working, and I cannot remove it as another one pops up every time I close it. Occasionally it changes to 'Settings has unfortunately stopped working', 'Dialer has unfortunately stopped working', etc. Along with this, it randomly restarts, and I cant fix it. It is not a rooted device, and clearing the Cache from the recovery menu did not work.
Any suggestions, as I really do not want to factory reset it?
Thanks, Rahim
Edit: Forgot to mention that it keeps saying preparing SIM card at the bottom

Thanks for the reply, but I tried that previously and the 'Clear data' and 'Clear Cache' are blanked out for both of them so I can't press it

make sure they are stopped.
"Force Stop" then try clear cache.

I can no longer get onto apps, so it seems I have no choice but to factory reset it
Do you know what could have caused this, so I can avoid it next time?
Thanks
Corrupt data maybe on a force shutdown. My phone was charging just now and decided to reboot and gave a error report but don't know the reason.
Some say google apps cache other dialer cache. Maybe someone else have a better ideia.
Use HTC backup. It backups everything...photos, definitions, emails, etc.

Hello everyone,
I'd like to ask for confirmation for this crash:
On SGS+ (GT-I9001) with CM9 alpha 4 by Arco68 flashed I'm consistently getting Settings app crashed by the following actions:
Go to "Settings", "Language & input", select "Default", in the dialog box select "Configure input methods" - immediate result is error message "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped".
Logcat excerpt attached.
Regarding the installation - everything was done according to the instructions (CWM installed, wiped everything, then separately wiped cache partition, flashed CM9 and gapps).
Is this repeatable for everyone or just on my device?
May it be related to this line in logcat?:
W/InputManagerService( 237): Couldn't create dir.: /data/system/inputmethod
Thanks in advance.
It happened the same to me but I tried again and now it worked, I'm using Swiftkey X. But now I have two problems:
1. Long press on input field doesn't show any menu (so I can't select the input method). Don't know if it's a bug or it's ICS style (if so, I don't like that).
2. While I'm writing, nothing happens when I tap on the blue cursor so I can't select the text, copy or paste.
Are those bugs too? Are them related?

No, as far as I know.
Regarding your point 1: I never seen this behaviour on stock ROM I've had (2.3.3) and don't see it on CM9. Was it system action that you're referring to? May it be so that this was addition by some specific keyboard app?
2: This blue arrow is for marking entry point for you to e.g. insert text between already entered words or use backspace in some specific position, text selection cursors with the option to cut/copy appear when you long tap on the already entered text.

No it's not related to that.
From looking at the logcat, you don't have a completely clean install. I see traces of Avast in there. Do a complete install with just CM9, no other apps, and see if it happens. If it doesn't happen, then install stuff one by one and check again.
i have a completely clean install and I have this bug, how can we fix it?

Hi Arco, thank you for looking into this issue, as minor as it is.
Now I've did factory reset in CWM, installed build 4, installed gapps, did not link to google account (otherwise it'd have started app downloads immediately) and done these steps once more:
* Settings
* Language & input
* Default
* Configure input methods
There was error message "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" - I was unable to make screenshot of this message with neither power button menu nor with Power+VolDown.
Other steps are on screenshots - red dot marks item to select.
Logcat also attached.
So I was messing around with the developer settings and turned on "Force RTL layout direction". This caused my phone to crash and for the error message to pop up "Unfortunately, system UI has stopped". I have tried rebooting multiple times and clearing the cache as some suggested but this doesn't seem to work. I was wondering if there are any other options instead of a factory reboot and if not, can I backup my phone from the recovery mode or using a USB connected to my laptop. Thanks!
see here:
PSA: Do not enable force RTL Layout in 5.1

on the last page is a solution that worked for someone, but most have to do a factory reset.
I am using MIUI Global 7.5| Stable (7.5.1.0 MXDMIDE) ROM & suddenly the notification area and lock screen is not working. The recent button and home button on the device is also not working. I was researching the web regarding the bug is android which might be causing this issue?
See this link here >> Android Police link >>
How To Fix Missing Home And Recents Buttons, And Notification Shade That Refuses To Pull Down After Android Update
Second Link >> Google Plus Link of PaulOBrien >>See this also
Now both the above try to resolve by connecting the mobile to you desktop/lappy in order to execute the command. There is an alternate option available here which might also work >> S7 Edge not showing notifications in tray and "recent apps" button and settings button dnt work
It talk about doing it by following this steps
"And I followed what the user Mike Tompkins said: "Did this using nova launcher. Long press home screen choose shortcut, activities, setup wizard, setup wizard test activity. Creates shortcut, open follow directions. Not sure if it really helps. Didn't have issue."
Here's the fix, being broken down dummy style:
1) Download Nova Launcher & set it as default to replace TouchWiz.
2) Long press on the home screen.
3) Choose Widgets.
4) At the top, under Nova Launcher, scroll to the right & press & hold on Activities and place it somewhere empty on the home screen.
5) Scroll down to Setup Wizard. I saw 2 Setup Wizard options.
6) Under the first Setup Wizard option, I opened it & scrolled down to the 3rd choice which said ".SetupWizardTestActivity". It might be in a different spot for you, but look at the small writing, that's how I saw this one.
7) Select that to create the widget shortcut.
8) Open it. Apparently you're supposed to have a menu to go through and just click through "Next", but there wasn't one for me.
The screen just flashed and then next thing you know, everything works!
But I am unable to find the .".SetupWizardTestActivity"
Any suggestion?
Moreover whenever I am going to developer option I see this message "Developer option is not available for this user"
I am sure I don't have any other user added to this handset.
Help & suggestions?
I have been able to access the device using abd, after adding permission, and have downloaded the logcat files of the device which is attached herewith >> Unable to attach logcat as am a new user, let me know how I can add them.
Now when I am connecting the devices via adb, the devices are showing in adb devices.
When i am executing this command >> adb shell am start -n com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity
I am getting this following message:
Starting: Intent { cmp=com.google.android.setupwizard/.SetupWizardTestActivity }
Error type 3
Error: Activity class {com.google.android.setupwizard/com.google.android.setupwizard.SetupWizardTestActivity} does not exist.
I am not sure why this problem is appearing? any help to fix this issue of home button, recent button, notification issues fixed?

Yes the problem seems to be System UI or something, I am not sure. I had rooted the device after the problem appeared, but it didn't able to resolve the issue. Today I had installed MIUI 8.0 on the device and all the problem disappeared, so it seemed like the problem, was with the bug in MIUI 7, or inherent bug when upgrading from KitKat to MM.
Hi all,
once my S5 mini boots up, it shows "System UI has stopped Working" and shows only my wallpaper. Power button is still working (i.e. shutdown menu appears), home button turns on display, anything else doesn't work.
Here is what I tried without success:
- remove SIM/SD
- go to airplane mode (possible from the menu when holding down power)
- Boot into "safe mode"
- Wipe cache in recovery mode
- use Kies (and Lite) to copy/reset (not working..)
- use Smart Switch to copy data to another phone
What seems to be the problem is the "Google App", according to various posts; e.g. [1, 2, ...]. But I cannot access settings and disable the app.
Is there any way to activate adb without being able to grant permissions from the phone and use it to remove the app? Any other ways to uninstall/reset this particular app?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
yyy
Alright, it didn't leave me alone
I managed to get my files by flashing TWRP into recovery and getting contacts2.db (and everything else I needed) with adb pull.
Even wiping the Dalvik / ART Cache and the Cache from TWRP had no effect on the hangup. Even bute-deleting the searchbar-app didnt do nothing.
Godspeed to everyone with the same problem.
After installing N960FXXU6FTJ5 for my ITV Exynos version, I made a wipe cache as I usually do after a firmare upgrade but this time, in Recovery mode, I found a new option in the bottom of the list called "Repair apps".
Someone knows what does it do and how it work's?

I answer myself :
I gave it a try....
....there's a reboot, the Samsung logo goes on normally for a while and after that it pops on the Optimizing Apps screen (two gears turnung plus the % of the apps optimized ) that you'll get everytime you update the OS.
When the process finishes, the phone gets on normally.
For what I've read around in Google, this process (Optimizing Apps) actually provisions the apps for the system by generating the Dalvik cache so that apps can run nicely (and quickly) with the current system. Personally I think it also makes a sort of defragmentation of all the apps .
So, when troubles occurs (lags, some types of app crashes) , with repair apps in recovery mode you can do a manuall re-optimize apps so the system will return snappie like it is after a firmware update..
On my s21+ repair apps also reset all my default services to Samsung apps. For instance, I had installed Gboard, Google Messaging, Phone etc and they all reverted to Samsungs version. Not a big deal since all I had to do was switch back to the Google apps when I opened each application.
FYI, I also did the clear system cache and repair apps and it made my fingerprint work consistently. I was having really inconsistent results with the reader before performing these recovery mode options.
