Downloading Custom ROMs or Stock firmwares with Peer to Peer? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was trying to find a stock firmware for my device, which I found, but then I was thinking.
Wouldn't it be easier if there was a 'piratebay' for everything Android? What I mean is, rather than downloading say a custom rom from a central server. wouldn't it be cheaper and faster to download in a peer to peer fashion?
I was also thinking that there needs to be a central repository for all custom roms and firmwares. Otherwise, it hard to find what you need. At least in terms of stock firmwares.
Has it been done?

I don't think it been done and I really would be to afraid to open myself up to hackers and viruses

Well couldn't you just check the md5 and make sure that you got the correct uncorrupted file?
I was just thinking that it would be easier to download and upload files this way. Cheaper to so that people dont have to pay for so much bandwidth.

Doesn't that happen only if you run a .exe file though on your computer? How would somebody be able to snoop around your computer though if all you're downloading and sharing is what you need?

Right, but one of the ways that happens is when someone downloads a song for example and along with that song is another file that when clicked on allows you(hacker, master etc) to see what those people are doing on their computer along with turning on their webcam and seeing and hearing what they are doing.
It usually only happens on windows desktops as far as I know.
I haven't done this I have just briefly read about it.

So you want a torrent site for Roms and things.
Good idea, I wouldn't mind.
It's not bad as it is now, but it's an idea.
Then again, if people don't even know how to download with MEGA then I would hate to explain torrents to them.

Wah... Wah... Wah... I want files hosted where I prefer.

i don't understand why people keep using rapidshare. there is nothing rapid about it. its crap. mediafire has been recommended by several computer magazines. there is no waiting involved. just download the file...
It'll be interesting to hear the replies for this... I've never really given much thought to this, but I understand what you're saying.

Totally agree.
Rapidshare is ANYTHING but rapid (apart from rapidly removing cash from your credit card!)....especially in the ME.
Files can usually be attached to the forum cant they??? OR are we in that grey area again....Smiles...
Im a total newb here but I love MediaFire compared to Rapidshare. It has been a pain waiting for all the wait times.
mediafire is so much better than rapidshare. like i said. no waiting, no paying, no nothing. and it is so simple. max upload is 100mb i think. plenty in my opinion...
and what about XDA FTP?
Why we are not using also XDA FTP server? limited disk space? limited donw/up data limit? rapidshare and megaupload completely suck!
mediafire looks great )
i agree i hate waitin nad havin to pay for that...but thanks to rapidhacker though, i still agree we shouldnt have to wait
I would prefer mediafire too, but if someone's gonna take the time to upload a file for everyone, then I'm not gonna complain.
With that said, do you have DSL? If so, just turn your modem off for about 2-3 minutes and start it back up and you'll be able to download what you wanted without having to wait an hour or however long rapidshare likes to make us wait!
Eric
i believe that would depend on how ones isp's dhcp rules are if one keep the same ip it would not work

Or just pay for an account and have access, then you are not limited.
Guys, if there is a huge file most of you REALLY want to be hosted, I can offer up to 100 Mbytes of Webspace on my (paid-for) database back-end. Just let me know what files you want me to host and I'll mirror them.
something is wrong with your ISP then because I download daily from rapidshare at around 850k/sec
Depends on site you select
The best for me are GlobalCrossing and Level3, other are slow like fart
Ehm, still I haven't had a proper look at rapidshare really, but I guess one should pay in order to download stuff from it.
It is something I'd like to avoid, as many other users do I think.
So, any other (free) solution would be welcomed....
I really don't care about speed as my provider filters connections in order (they say) to limit peer-to-peer... the truth is: they buy bandwidth from another company, so they promise ther users 4 MBits but if everyone used 4Mbits everything would crash.
Anyway, as attachments aren't usually that big, I'd be happy with 30Kbps download speed....

Why pay to remove limitations when places like Mediafire have no limitations?
Don't care rapid share is blindingly fast on my 24Mb connection
sendspace/filefront/filden is free with no wait time (i use fileden, its a direct link, none of this CAPTCHA crap)

Dropbox Suspicions? Anyone?

So, anyone afraid of dropbox now, lol.
http://jdsawyer.net/2011/07/02/put-it-in-the-cloud-are-you-nuts/
For the average user they can't cause any harm for storing music files or videos to have access to them elsewhere. So no reason for me to stop using it.
I sense lawsuits from somebody.
To add some facts to that: Dropbox already modified these changes, clearifying that those are legal terms they need to technically operate their service.
Read the lower part of this post: thinq.co.uk/2011/7/3/dropbox-terms-service-target-your-stuff/
A Dropbox spokesman:
Some of you have written us with very understandable concerns about the legal-sounding parts. In particular, our new TOS talks about the licenses we need to run Dropbox. We want to be 100% clear that you own what you put in your Dropbox. We don’t own your stuff. And the license you give us is really limited. It only allows us to provide the service to you. Nothing else

However, users should be alarmed.
Yeah, came across this at bleeding cool. Com, from a Greg Rucka twitter (comic book writer), thought there would be some interest here. The main point someone was putting forth is that we are not the customers with dropbox/Facebook etc, we are the Product/Merchandise ...

Shady! I haven't trusted (or used) Facebook for many months now. If you investigate their history it's more than a little sketchy. They don't want your information ... 'just because'.
It's really not that shady; it's just a bunch of legal jargon stemming from outdated laws they have to put into the agreement to protect themselves when storing millions of people's personal file's. Nothing will come of this, because there's no way a lawsuit will be able to get anything out of them

I know its kinda backward, but depending on the size of stuff just email it to yourself. With the size of hotmail and gmail these days a few gigs worth of attachments might just be ok. And if there 'stories', ie your a writer IIRC you've just copyrighted your work by mailing it to yourself (someone might want to clairify or correct that statement, just a thought bouncing around in my poor brain, lol).

As this platform continues to skyrocket in popularity it will continue to be the target of viruses and malware. Fortunately Unix has built in permissions and now Apple will have to have patch Tuesday like Microsoft.

Two possibilities here:
You don't get much.
You are married.
Which is it?
Macs are just as susceptible to viruses as anything else. Always have been. They just aren't targeted as much. Apple even sells an antivirus, they just keep it hush hush.
While windows is Targeted much much more, you can be much better defended if you know what you are doing.
The next time someone tells you, "Macs don't get viruses", ask them, "Then why does Apple sell an antivirus?"

I believe your answer is in the OP. (Sorry coudn't resist!) Thought about pointing it out but didn't want to encourage flaming.
Seriously though, thank you to the MODs for all their hard work! (Love your signature by the way)
I cant guess the last time I got a virus on Windows, maybe 1997/8?, and have never even thought about it on my MBP. Just ran a few terminal commands and still clean as a whistle. I use my Mac for all my Android stuff, dont have to worry about drivers...
Apple/Google bashing needs to stop. I love all my Google products and all my Apple products...who gives a damn who the manufacturer is, besides idiots...

[Q] So what is the deal with DevHost

So I have noticed a lot of people use DevHost for files. I grabbed a custom rom from there and I have to say it has been nothing but trouble. I am suffering from bad advertising malware in my browser now. Is this a new thing? Am I the only one who has this problem?

Did you figure out how to get rid of those stupid ads addon? I did, I am just making sure you did.
Yeah, I'm not a fan either. It's bad enough using it from a PC, but much worse from a phone. Last time I used it from a phone it had 3 different links saying "Download" on them, it took me about a minute of looking at it to make sure I was going to hit the right link.
It would help if they changed the link to say "Download (filename)". At least the advertisers would have to work a little harder to make it really confusing.
