Try Xposed module GravityBox. You can set in it preffered network.

Hi all,
i am on O2 Germany network and using AT&T nexus one.
i get 2-3 bars of HSDPA(H /3G, 2-3Mbps) network at my work location but if i move little far from my seat (near to window) i get only GPRS(30-50 Kbps) network but my friends Iphone manages to get Edge network on same provider which my Nexus is not able to get.
can anyone tell me why is it happening so and also i have tested selecting EURO band under phone info settings but no use
TIA
go into the dialer and type *#*#4636#*#*, go to phone information and tell us what setting is selected under Set preferred network type

hmm thats not the issue then as WCDMA preferred can still grab an Edge signal, have you tried turning 3G off and see if you can grab Edge anywhere?
i have switched off 3G too but still i am not getting Edge........
can anyone help me plzzzzzzzzzz
Bump.......for the convenience of all to see and help me out
Seems to me you're never going to get 3G, so I'd personally set it to one of the other options, not WCDMA. Don't have the phone in front of me but think the option to pick is clear if you're only going to get EDGE.
i9000m. still on stock rom, UGJG9
went and used the "*#*#4636#*#*" command
went into Phone Information
> Set preferred network type:
> Chose WCDMA only
> Pressed back touchpad to exit out of "phone info" menu
> Went back in to see it on GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
Still in the Phone info menu
looked at network type: UMTS
the original intent was to get the handset to stay on 2G to conserve power
WCDMA only means that your Phone will only use UMTS...?
Same here on the vibrant. Seem to be a problem on all galaxy phones
Don't press "back", after you make the change press "Home" and the change will be saved.
I just verified this on my captivate flipping back and forth between "WCDMA preferred" and "GSM/CDMA auto"

Why don't you try other settings? Such as gsm auto prl and wcdma only? Oh and did you restart your phone after??
When I flashed my phone with Bell's 3 button firmware I got the same issue. Now I'm back with my aussie stock firmware and all is well.
Try switching the rom.

Hey to get WCDMA only you can just go to Settings>Wireless and Network>Mobile Networks. It should be changed to WCDMA only now if you go back to testing .
I, however, would like to change to WCDMA preferred in testing, but I'm having the same problem as it just keeps switching back to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)... Does anyone know a fix for this?

Type *#*#4636#*#* in dialer.
Select phone information. Scroll down a bit. Select preferred network type. Enjoy.

Try to dial *#*#4636#*#* if it works, you'll see a menu where you can force the network mode
my phone is unlocked and i use tmobile service..
they just switched on LTE in my area.. and its working great.. i assigned a new APN (fast.t-mobile.com) and i get upwards of 18Mbps.. but..
in my house.. the LTE signal is 1 bar.. most of my calls go straight to VM and i sometimes dont get texts for hours..
in my house the 4g signal which was the default before is 3 to 4 bars.. i never had a problem receiving calls and texts when its on 4g.
so it seems now they have LTE service the phone favors that no matter what the signal is..
i cant find any options in the settings to turn off LTE and just use 4g.
i guess you can disregard this question.. i installed CM10.2 and it has the option to only use WCDMA instead of LTE..
this fixes my issue

no the original firmware did not have the option to select GSM/WCMA/LTE only.
the CM10.2 has 3 options.
WCDMA/LTE
GSM/WCDMA/LTE
GSM/WCDMA only.
along with a use 2g network only check box..

I have a rooted XT1049 Moto X on republic wireless that is running 4.4.2. I've recently installed xposed and gravity box. Gravity box installed some extra quick change toggles to the notification tray and one of them is the 2G/3G network mode toggle. I touched that and ever since I have zero cell signal. Is there any way I can fix what touching that toggle screwed up? If I long press the network mode toggle it takes me to a mobile network settings page where everything is greyed out and the preferred network type says "Change the network operating mode" under it and network operators says "Choose a network operator" under it, but since they are greyed out I can't change them. I've tried to update the PRL and update the profile, neither helped. I'm wondering if that toggle might have switched the radio over to GSM mode? Let me know if I need to supply any other information that would help get this resolved. Any help would be appreciated, Thank you.
I did this once. I can't remember exactly what corrected it, but I think I just made sure the toggle was set back to 2G/3G and rebooted.

I've tried that but it didn't fix it, I also have an app called radio switcher but I haven't tried to use it yet.
Republic radio settings
I borked my settings previously. Set the radio to "CDMA/EvDo Auto." It got mine up and going again. This is for 3G. I am not sure if these settings will work for the 4G service.

You might try using an app like Activity Launcher:
- Select All activities
- Scroll down and tap the listing for Settings which will expand and show sub-listings.
- Scroll down and tap the sub-listing for Phone Info under Settings which will run the com.android.settings.RadioInfo activity
- Set preferred network type: CDMA auto (PRL)

Every time I set it to CDMA auto (PRL) it changes back to WCDMA preferred, is there something else I have to change at the same time to get it to stick?

I'm not sure. Simply selecting the different options there seems to apply immediately on my device.
How did you root your phone?

I used the towel pie root method. I just have an empty triangle where the cell signal bars usually are.

I'm not very familiar with Towel Pie root. Are you able to edit the settings.db directly? You could try an app like SQLite Master or SQLite Editor to set the value of preferred_network_mode in the global table of the settings.db database (/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db):
0 = WCDMA preferred
1 = GSM only
2 = WCDMA only
3 = GSM auto (PRL)
4 = CDMA auto (PRL)
5 = CDMA only (PRL)
6 = EvDo only
7 = GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
8 = LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)
9 = LTE/GSM auto (PRL)
10 = LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)
11 = LTE only
12 = Unknown
Are you using it on RW or gsm?

You performed my sim-unlock, right? Did you flash the nv-ruim-only file? If so, that locks the device to GSM. Flash the "revert" file....
The SIM-Unlock is NOT for people wanting to use CDMA....

No I didn't use the sim-unlock, I'm just using it on RW. This all started when I used the 2g/3g toggle that got installed with Gravity Box.

Ok, I understand.
A similar issue happened to me -- it has something to do with RW's proprietary ROM. The only solution for me was to flash the entire stock 4.4.2 RW SBF.
You might have success just using mfastboot to flash system.img - should solve your issues.
