Nexus 6 won't turn on - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have an opportunity to trade my droid turbo for a nexus 6, which is what I've been trying to do for a min. I found one that is in perfect condition, but it will not turn on. The seller says that the green light will blink a few times when he plugs in the charger, and then it stops and that's it. He said the battery died and couldnt get it to turn back on after that. Phone is just over a month old and he hasn't done any troubleshooting. He already ordered a replacement and isn't worried about trying to fix it. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a fix? I'd really like to make the trade but don't wanna be stuck with a broken phone. Thanks for any input!

Sounds like a horrible idea. Did he root it and enable the LED? Because the LED doesn't work out if the box. Sounds like he messed it up to me. Have him try to force it into recovery via Volume down and Power.

I tried having him do that, said it didn't work. So there's no battery light that works out the box?

Correct. No external LED works out of the box. You can enable it, as I and plenty of others have done via threads here, but it sounds fishy.

Good luck either way.

Is it possible the phone is bricked? Seems like there should be a way to get it turned on, especially with some "sign" of life with the green light. I guess it's hard to say without the device in front of me.

The led does work out of the box.... And that is the only time it does work when the battery is dead and it should be red when charging when battery is 0% etc ... That is when led was designed to work with nexus when battery didn't have enough juice to boot but to show it's charging etc

I usually unplug before booting into bootloader.
Also, if you haven't already, have him look in a very well lit area for cracks in the LCD underneath the glass. They may be hard to spot, I've seen some only a few cm long black out a whole lcd. It may even just look like a piece of hair under the glass.

So he plugged in for an hour n still nothing. He did say that the led didn't flash this time so he thinks it may have charged. I dunno, it's gotta be something stupid. I'd really like to get the nexus 6, just don't wanna be stuck without a phone if I can't fix it.

Another thing that's enticing is it's the 64 GB model. He isn't really in a rush to sell, just got his replacement today, n he's been trying to help me out since I contacted him first. He says he does have a cash offer though.

Help!!! My phone was hacked!

OK so the weirdest thing happened just now. I was charging my atrix HD when I went on it to check a phone number. Then it started opening apps and going on xda then other apps. I had no control over it. I couldn't even turn it off. I had to do the power and volume down thing to shut off. It was very creepy. I was just looking for a minute while the person did what they did. It was like when a person from dell controls your computer if something isn't working right. At first I thought it was being laggy but no! It kept going settings were changed and the person tried playing music on it! I turned it off before he could but the wierdest part is that I had turned of my wifi and set my phone on airplane mode so it can charge faster. No communication what so ever. Right now its off and I plan to keep it that way until someone can tell me what to do to protect myself. Also this could have been happening before i went to go check my phone. Which was like 15 minutes before I checked it. Please help

Best thing to do is just wipe.
Easy way to do it is to go to Settings->Privacy->Factory Reset
It was probably a bad app.

Another thing to be aware of is I've noticed Motorola's screens (at least on the Atrix models) are kind of finnicky. If there's a little bit of moisture around they just start registering touches on their own sometimes.
With my battery life being... less than ideal.. I find myself plugging into all kinds of chargers along my travels. Some non moto chargers make my phone go nuts, exactly like what was described - apps opening etc. Have experienced this several times. Feel the other explanations are possible of course but highly unlikely.

Airport WiFi connections are VERY insecure. Basically they monitor everything that goes through. Text messages, calls, anything. Maybe they also have access to control phones?

i don't think this is possible with this phone unless the case connects to the usb plug. there is no external charging port.

Incipio is supposed to be coming out with The offGRID Thin Battery Case for the Moto X. I'm assuming it's still being worked on because it's the only case left in their series i believe that is not on the market yet. Sorry, i can't post links yet, but the majority of link is below

That's pretty much how all battery cases work. The cases themselves have a usb port you use to charge the case and phone at the same time.

No problem. Anytime...The Moto X is a great phone and I'm glad to see that the 3rd party manufacturers are getting on board with Motorola to really get these accessories out to the many owners of this phone.
Depending on your usage you may not need it. I had a Nexus as well, and used to charge it 3+ times a day. With the X so far I can make it though a full day without issue.

With my phone completely stock and having Wi-F ( never on Wi-Fi though)i, BT, auto brightness etc enabled all the time, I'm getting 4hrs screen time, 1 hour talk with 16hrs off the charger and still ending the day with 20%+ battery life. If I root, debloat and greenify, I'm certain I could get 5+hrs screen 2hrs talk and have more left in that same period... But I'm sticking stock for the time being as it's almost perfect the way it is.
With my sgs3 I'd have to fully charged it sometime early afternoon to use it this much.

When charging my phone the plug burnt and melted

Last night I forgot to charge my phone, so I plugged it in on the way to work and notice the charge light went out on the phone and when I checked the plug to see if it came out out was hot and melting. When I got to the job I plugged it in with a wall charger thinking the car charger went bad and it was doing the same thing. I figured I'll turn the phone off to save my battery to transfer stuff to the computer when I get home to take it to sprint, I decided to try it again while it was off and now it's not doing it even now I turned the phone back on.
In running the latest 42one rom no custom kernel, I guess whatever was going on isn't happening because it rebooted now.
Anyone ever experience this issue, now I'm afraid to leave it plugged in when I go to bed if it happens again, there isn't no point in taking it to sprint because I'm not able to show them what was happening.

I actually did have this happen to me. It was serve melting but it was extremely hot to where it was uncomfortable to touch. I reported it to HTC got a new charger and all has been well since. I was running Bad Boyz and have no idea what the heck happened. I had it charging over night. I'll find the wall piece and upload a pic in the am to show. Hopefully the damage will show well.

I don't get it?
The OP probably was using the OEM charger, so I think this is a rarity, but a word of caution to everyone: Not all USB chargers are made the same. You should only use high quality OEM charges for your phones, there's no reason to have a fire hazard to save a couple bucks on a charger.
This happened to me a couple of days. I got to work and plugged it in as usual. After a few minutes i noticed the red light went out. I noticed the bottom of the phone was really warm so i unplugged it and the tip of the charger burnt the crap out of my fingers.
I tried other charges and they didn't work and my Mophie won't charge my phone anymore so just like the OP, I ran a Nandroid back-up along with a Titanium back-up preparing to have to swap it out and then having to worry about getting it s-off'd.
As of today, it's charging with another charger but i did scrape the charging port with a needle because it looked like it might have had some char on it.
Fingers crossed!

Most likely a bad rectifier that's allowing some noise on the (what should be) clean DC.
Dirty DC will cause all sorts of ugly on a digital device.

I had a similar problem with my first One. I was charging it on a crappy work computer, and one of the points got zapped. I could still charge my phone from a plug-in, but it wouldn't connect to any computer. $50 later (thanks Sprint), I had a brand new phone. That I may or may not have promptly bricked.

Wireless Charging issue (maybe bad charger?)

Not sure if there's something specific you need to do but I bought a brand new techmatte wireless charger. The reviews were all great and I got. From Amazon. I tried it with my g2 and nothing. No matter how much I adjusted it it wouldn't work. The charger lit up when plugged in the wall but the phone didn't charge and the charger didn't show that it recognized a phone on it. I already filed a return since I just got it today but if anyone has any ideas and it works I can cancel the return thanks.
Ps. There's a video on YouTube of it working with other phones so maybe my phone is the issue???

the last bit of advice I can think of for the time being is that the Qi receiver for the phone is on the lower half of the phone. Sometimes I have to position it just so until it registers. Best of luck other than that with your new charger.
If this is anything like the PowerBot Qi charger I got from Amazon, you need to use the supplied cable. I tried to use what I had plugged into my computer at the time and it didn't quite fit right and was very loose so it wouldn't properly power up my Qi charger.

As far as I concerned, if it's truly a Qi charger it should work. Maybe you have a faulty unit and they don't have to eat the cost? I'd just return it and get another product. This is what I got:

This works for my two LG G2 VS980 and my Galaxy Nexus 7 (2013). Make sure you use the supplied cable or you'll have a loose connection.

[SOLUTION] Phone shutting down with battery not empty

This solved my problem regarding the phone turning of at 50% battery or 37% etc. You will see after applying the settings the battery percentage will change and show the real battery life.
I got this solution from a Google tech.
1) Power off your phone.
2) Press and hold the Power and Volume Down buttons. This will put the phone in fastboot.
3) Use the Volume buttons to scroll through the menu until you see "Bootloader logs"
4) Press and hold the power key for a long time (7+ seconds) until the phone reboots.

After days and days of searching and trying a zillion things without success and just as I was ready to RMA the phone I stumbled upon this suggestion in the Google forums. It was posted by a Google tech somewhere in the middle of a really big thread that I couldn't find again. No I didn't find this by myself but wanted to share for users to be able to find it easily.

I returned my phone a few weeks ago because of this issue and got a replacement from Motorola . I do notice certain kernels will create this situation moreso than the stock rom or stock kernel will not create this issue so that's also something to think about.
However, thanks for the insight should my replacement phone display the same symptoms.
Edit: interesting, I just tried your suggestion and my battery went from 91% to 66%.
I am on the validator kernel using the suggested settings.

That's good. It means that your battery would have died at about 25%.
Let me ask you? Are you using a wireless charger?

On occasion at work but not at home. Sounds like another cause. Why would it if I may ask?
I actually find them to be silly as you must plug the charger base via USB which I can do with phone! Just another step IMHO including finding the sweet spot when resting on charger.

Bahaha, quick charge in action. Does not charge quicker, just drags down the "full" point.

I've noticed from my own experience and after talking with others that this issue has started after I started using a wireless charger. Maybe it's just a coincidence but I'm trying to gather some info.

Also raises another question: those turbo chargers. I have 3 from moto and use at home. I don't think however as phone seems to charge correctly and capacity seems to register correctly.

I will be using the phone for 6-7 days without the wireless charger to see if the problem comes back. If it doesn't I will then use the wireless charger and see if problem shows up. This is an issue with a lot of people and many of them have RMA'd the phone just to realize that the problem came back and it's not a hardware issue.

By using a regular 5v charger instead of the idiotic 5/9/12v charger that came with it.
I am having the below issue.
1. If phone is around the 30% mark, and I receive a call, it would just switch off.
2. If i reboot the phone with it being around 30% mark, it will just switch off after displaying the lockscreen.
Is this behavior that is same as the one in the thread?
I tried the mentioned steps and my battery percentage stayed the same. It also shows the same battery percentage in TWRP.

Yes exactly the same problem. Keep pushing the power button a few seconds longer after phone switches off. My problem was fixed but a week later it came back. For others it was fixed permanently. There's a lot of people with this problem and they keep increasing. I fear that certain wireless chargers are causing it. Are you using a wireless charger?

No I am not using any wireless charger. I only use the turbo charger at home and a 2A N7 charger at work.
I am waiting for 5.1 and will run it for a few days to test . Hope that 5.1 will fix this issue.
Also Google suppport asked me to reboot into safe mode and see if the issue is still there.
Just tried this and it went from 82 to 85%.
I have an issue where the phone turns off at 5%
I have this problem currently with my N6 and it is beyond madding.
First it would do it only when the phone was getting to 30~35% tried the fix.
Now the phone crashes it all the time. 80% crash, charge for a little bit use again 85% crash, charge to 100% use streaming a movie from google play 65% crash. now im going to try a custom rom to see if that will fix it.
tried the fix several time only seems to make it worse.
even with a blank install after reinstalling the stock img the phone will crash.
