Hello,
Thinking of buying a 2014 moto X from AT&T. I have been reading and searching for an hour, but cannot find the definitive and latest answer to these questions. So I thought I'd just ask.
My apologies if this is well known information.
1) Has anybody managed to unlock the ATT XT1097 bootloader? (There is a thread about bootloader unlocking but I don't think it mentions AT&T)
2) Is there a known method for SIM unlock?
Thank you very much
Gonzalo
You can unlock the bootloader or the XT1095 and XT1097 trough the same method.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/root-root-moto-x-2014-android-5-0-t2941388
.
I have the ATT version, and no you cannot unlock bootloader, and they are sim free, at least mine is sim unlocked.
Don't purchase the "branded" device, purchase the "Pure Edition" then go to AT&T..or any provider you wish, (except) for "Big Red"..
If the offer of a cheap priced device is what's appealing, Wait and save up, don't allow the carriers to get the strangle hold on you.!!

I fully agree. I never buy anything branded, all my phones are Nexus.
The reason I ask is because my company has a corporate agreement with ATT, (they pay for my cell phone line). I use the ATT SIM with my Nexus 5, but because of that corporate agreement I am entitled to buy a Moto X for $ 99 or a Nexus 6 for $ 249. I was thinking of taking advantage of that possibility, but the Nexus 6 is too big for me, and the Moto X I would buy it for $99 only if I could convert it to a SIM unlocked Pure version.

I'm trying to shop on Swappa for a Moto X and there is no way to discern carrier unlocked and bootloader unlocked..
What do I need to know about this phone when purchasing used? I cannot live without root and found a thread about the Chinaman that's unlocking phones again but only for phones manufactured this year.
Anything else I should know about?

It sounds like you want a GSM Moto X, correct?
If so, just find the T-MOBILE variant. The T-Mobile Moto X is essentially the "GSM Dev Edition". It is SIM-Unlockable (or already sim-unlocked), and unlike the AT&T variant, it has unlockable bootloader.....FREE, straight from the Moto website. (No intervention from China required) The model is XT1053
So don't rely on the sellers description...just make sure you buy the T-Mobile variant. (XT1053)
I agree with you...swappa can be confusing on these terms. According to swappa, "unlocked" is supposed to refer to SIM unlocked, NOT BL unlocked. But many of the sellers don't read these rules and some even assume that if they have used some exploit to root the device that it is "unlocked"....which of course is totally incorrect.
You should be safe so long as it you buy XT1053. If you're unsure, request the seller to verify. Just because it is listed under XT1053 doesn't mean the seller couldn't have made a mistake. The model number is on the bottom rear of the phone in small print.
EDIT: The 1053 MAY not have the model number printed on the bottom rear....but the AT&T model DOES (avoid it at all costs - AT&T model comes sim locked AND bootloader locked). Better yet, ask the seller to send you a screenshot from Settings > About Phone. Under "System Version" it will list the carrier. The XT1053 should say:
"161.44.25.ghost_row.Retail.en.US"
It is the ONLY variant to say Retail.en.US - all the other variants have a carrier name in the "System Version"
Actually, I wanted the Verizon version.. Sorry that I forgot to add that in..
I could care less if it is carrier unlocked . I don't travel outside the usa for now.

OK, then you have 2 choices.
1. Buy the Verizon Developer Edition. This is the only Verizon variant that can be Bootloader unlocked FREE via the moto website
2. All other VZW variants WILL come bootloader locked. If you can get the seller to confirm a 2014 build date, you may be able to get an unlock code from China, but there is no guarantee. He will also not tell you if he has the code unless you PAY for it....so there are absolutely no guarantees here.
Looking through the swappa website, I don't see any VZW developer editions for sale. This will be a tough one for you....unless you happen to come across one that explicitly says "unlocked bootloader", but this will mean that he HAD to have gotten code from China, and your warranty will be VOID.
I did find ONE VZW Dev edition on eBay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-Mo...1199176524?pt=Cell_Phones&hash=item2c845be74c
There is a second one listed, but at $549 I doubt you're interested. You could buy Direct from Motorola for less.
Also, CONSIDER purchasing direct from Motorola. Think about it....if you buy the VZW Dev edition direct from Motorola, you will be able to unlock for FREE, without losing your warranty. Additionally, there is a $100 "Jellybean Rebate" for trading in a qualifying USED device. One of the qualifying trade-ins is the "Motorola Admiral" which you can get used off ebay for about $20 shipped. Buy one and send it in for the $100 rebate! I've done this 4 times now (max of 5 rebates allowed per individual - one per each Moto X you buy) and have received all of my rebates.
http://www.motorola.com/us/consumer...Verizon/moto-x-developer-edition-verizon.html
Do the math:
$449.00 VZW Dev Edition direct from Motorola
+ 20.00 Motorola Admiral used from ebay
= $469.00
- $100.00 Moto Jellybean rebate
= $369.00
Assuming you get one of the cheapest VZW X's on swappa for about $250.00, you will still need to send $45 to China (with no guarantee of unlock, and definitely NO warranty) So you're just saving $80 over the brand new dev edition that you can DEFINITELY unlock, and that retains warranty even after unlock.
Good Luck with this.
Thank you for the heads up about the JB rebate

One small note... Per the docs that came with my X, the warranty on the X is non-transferable, so buying used off swappa, ebay, etc also invalidates the warranty.
Otherwise, everything else you posted is an awesome reply.

If you buy it TODAY or TOMORROW you can get it $100 off! The Dev edition is 349.99 -before- the rebate.
This would be the ideal time to purchase your VZW Dev Edition!

You may have already seen this, but I wanted to post it as a reply so you would get an email notification just in case you hadn't.
If you buy the $20 admiral for the JB rebate, you're looking at $269 after rebate.
Too late.. But thanks for all your effort
I am waiting for the Chinese. But, at least he's honest

I want to get a Moto X that would work if I decided to switch from T-Mobile to AT&T. My first preference is to buy it from Best Buy (I have some gift cards) but the guy at the store said if I bought a T-Mobile Moto X from them it wouldn't work if I switched to AT&T because it would be locked. From what I understand, T-Mobile can and will unlock this device for me if I ask them (nicely) meaning I could then use it with AT&T. Is my understanding correct?
My other options are to buy one from T-Mobile or get one from Motorola's website. Same question with these phones: Even if they are locked to T-Mobile at first, can I get them unlocked and use them on AT&T?
Thanks for any and all help!

Friend..the best way to do it, is to purchase an unbranded, no carrier Moto X from Motorola Website..then you can use whomever you wish..I'd suggest the Developer Edition..otherwise you'll probably have to purchase a "branded" model..
Tip: do everything in your power to purchase an "unbranded" unlockable device..
Here is a list of devices that can be unlocked..look in Moto X list..which can be unlocked..I don't see AT&T listed as unlockable..but they do offer the Moto X..but if I was to guess..I'd say theirs is also unlockable.. but verify this before a purchase..
But..if your budget doesn't allow for the price of a Moto XDEV..then certainly consider the new Moto G 4G LTE..the two are VERY similar is size, and the G will run right along side with the X..I have both..and a budget certainly will justify the new Moto G..and its not carrier branded, runs LTE blazing..consider the Moto G..I have one on AT&T..all my devices are now on AT&T..but of course, depends on your area, to which carrier..

I don't know that there is a "T-Mobile Branded" X, and I don't think T-Mobile sells the X directly (at least it isn't on their web site).
Your choice, is the GSM UNlocked (includes T-Mobile sim) from Moto Maker web site, or the GSM Developer Edition... why?
These are the only way to get a Moto X that supports HSPA/HSPA+ over AWS (1700mhz) that T-mobile uses. History or why is this a consideration: When T-mobile started rolling out their HSPA/HSPA+ network, they did so on AWS(1700mhz) and are the only carrier to do so. While they are re-farming their 1900mhz from EDGE to HSPA+ in many areas, that isn't complete, so if the phone doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS, it will fall back to EDGE in those legacy areas which remain.
Now, what is the difference between the GSM Unlocked and GSM Dev Edition? Kind of simple...
The GSM Developer Edition comes only as 32gig with black face, woven white back, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), and says Developer Edition on the back.
The GSM Unlocked (includes T-Mobile SIM) on Moto Maker can be ordered as 16, 32, or 64gig, and the face, back and accents can be customized, along with other customization.
BOTH are SIM unlocked out of the box. Both can be bootloader unlocked, however doing so voids the warranty on the GSM Unlocked version but not the Dev Edition.
Both of these editions support the same GSM/EDGE/GPRS/HSPA/HSPA+/LTE bands and frequencies. In fact, they are the same "board' inside, use the same roms, etc. i.e. other than the look of the outside & customization options, and bootloader unlocking voiding vs not voiding the warranty, they are the same phone. (hence the GSM Dev Edition being the preferred choice so you can unlock the bootloader and easily root it without voiding the warranty).
If you are on T-Mobile today, you could buy the ATT version at no contract direct from Moto, BUT... you can't unlock the bootloader (moto doesn't give out the codes for ATT, Verizon, Republic wireless and a few others), ATT Wont sim unlock it (so you could use with T-Mobile) unless you are their customer for a certain period of time, and it doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS. While the ATT X does support 2 extra LTE bands, those bands are not currently used in the USA.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for the responses! So let's say I were to order the GSM unlocked version (I'm not worried about voiding the warranty by unlocking the bootloader) with the T-Mobile SIM from motomaker and I used it on T-Mobile for a few months. If I were unhappy with the service from T-Mobile, would I be able to replace the T-Mobile SIM with an AT&T SIM and use it on AT&T's network?
P.S. I did take a look at the Moto G 4G and the Dev Edition but considering who is going to use this phone (my mom), my budget and the reviews the Moto X has gotten I decided that the X would be the best choice.

Yes, that is correct. The only caveat being that if ATT ever starts using those two extra LTE Bands (band 5 and 7) in the USA then the GSM Unlocked will have a slight disadvantage as it doesn't support them (hardware wise).

I bought the T-Mobile/GSM unlocked version from MotoMaker and it's working on my AT&T GoPhone plan no problem. I cut my micro-SIM down to nano and it works in the X just like it did in my Nexus 4. Interestingly I get better signal in many areas on LTE than my N4 got on HSPA+.

Hello
I want to buy verizon moto x 2014 in usa and use it in europe. Does it sim locked? Is there needed any manipulation to switch career from Verizon to another?
Thanks
I'm pretty sure the Verizon one is SIM locked. They might sell you an unlocked one, or let you unlock early. You are better off getting a European model motomaker phone.

Actually the Verizon Moto X is unlocked out of the box, as are all Verizon 4G LTE phones. I have bought at least 4 or 5 and used them on T-Mobile just to test. Even the iPhones are. One slight perk in the tyranny of Verizon

No...

For the Moto G 2013, yes. See http://theroot.ninja/ Must be running 4.4.3 or earlier.
For the Moto G 2014, no, but you can try it if your running 4.4.3 or earlier.
Frankly, if Motorola lets you unlock the phone then count yourself lucky, as many of the Moto G's out there
are carrier-bootloader restricted and will never be unlockable unless enough people scream at the FCC.

OK let me be as clear as I can on my wording:
"carrier locking" is slang for 2 ways carriers have of locking phones. First is network locking. Second is bootloader locking.
Network locking means you can't walk into Walmart and buy a Boost Moto G Prepaid phone for $60 and
then replace the SIM card with your ATT Mobile card and start using it. You will have to obtain a network unlock
code from Boost. In the United States the FCC mandated last year that all cell carriers must permit network
unlocking after the subsidized price of the phone was paid for. (generally a year) You will generally have to supply the MEID
or IMEI of the phone to the carrier, and the carrier won't network unlock phones that were reported stolen to
them or where the owner is owning money. There are companies on the Internet that claim to supply unlock
codes, some for free, some they charge. YMMV. There's hardware unlock code calculators you can buy for
a couple hundred bucks. Typically, network unlocking is more important for GSM phones (or phones that are
dual GSM/CDMA) since even in the United States, few cell carriers use CDMA, so a network unlocked Moto G
that is CDMA is kind of a mental exercise more than anything else.
Bootloader locking was dreamed up to prevent evil crackers from writing viruses and such that will get on your
phone and hijack it for some nefarious purpose. Basically all Moto G's are sold with locked bootloaders no
matter who you buy them from. Unfortunately, bootloader locking is being abused by many carriers to
prevent people from booting unsigned code on their own phones. (ie: rooted phones) I don't know about Boost but I do know
Verizon makes Motorola lock the bootloaders of all phones that Verizon buys to sell through the Verizon
store, and through places like Walmart, etc. and will not allow Motorola to unlock bootloaders.
In the United States most people buy carrier subsidized phones from retail stores for under $100 because most
of them don't understand that paying an extra $20 a month for 2 years is more expensive than saving
$200 on a cell phone.
For the price of this phone, . I don't see why people don't just buy straight from Moto and just get the code from them. I got both a Moto X 2013 and the Moto G 2014 from Moto directly. Best experience ever
Can someone create a free tool to unlock bootloader of the Droid Turbo please.
If you really want a free unlock, Sunshine released the details exploit they used. You can put it together yourself. The $25 to Sunshine is to cover the cost of time and research, and any devices they've broken during research and testing.
Okay, since we're resurrecting this tired old question, that has been asked about a thousand times, again, let's keep things short and sweet with the real answer:
No.

Yes. It's called the XT1250. You should have bought that. Same device, same bands, same FCC ID. Runs on Verizon with a Verizon LTE SIM card, just like a non-Verizon Nexus 6. The XT1250 is basically the "dev" version of the XT1254, with bootloader unlocked FREE from Motorola website.
If you buy a Verizon phone you KNOW the bootloader is locked by orders of Verizon. And you bought it anyway, so don't really have a problem with the bootloader being locked down, do you?
So, if you buy a Verizon smartphone and devs spend time and money to bypass Verizon's stupidity, please don't complain about a small amount of compensation to support their efforts. Be thankful there is a solution!
If you have an issue with that, then don't buy Verizon phones. There's free unlock alternative on the EXACT same device, called the U.S. Moto Maxx XT1250.
And yes, you can even flash Droid Turbo firmware over the XT1250 to "convert" it to Droid Turbo.

Also, they're on Amazon now. You don't even have to deal with a sketchy eBay seller. They're fairly cheap too, as far as flagship phones go: http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-XT12...ie=UTF8&qid=1459256900&sr=8-2&keywords=xt1250
