[Q] bootloader unlock - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Nexus 6 that came rooted and with busybox.
how do I know if the bootloader has been unlocked?

You can't root it without unlocking the boot loader, so if its rooted then that's all the evidence you need

Also, as soon as you turn on the phone, the black screen with the white Google logo comes up, on the bottom of the screen should show and unlocked padlock. That also means your bootloader is unlocked.

do you see an open padlock on the bottom of the screen while booting? then it's unlocked. also, you can boot into the bootloader, itll say unlocked. but if you already havd root, its probably unlocked, or he relocked it. if you have root, you can use an app to re unlock it.

you are right, I see the padlock unlocked and the word "unlocked" on the bootloader screen.
thanks.
I'm coming from a Samsung device and have no idea how to flash roms on a Motorola device.
any suggestions you can give me?

I suggest you start with this, to learn adb fastboot and flashing.
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
If you run into the missing system.img problem here is the link to fix it:

This way you can start from the beginning.

[Q] Locking & Unlocking Moto X 2013

Hey Folks,
I was curious to know if you have unlocked your bootloader, and then locked it again via fastboot oem lock command, if you wanted to unlock the bootloader maybe in the distant future again, would you need to use the same unlock key that was given to you by moto?
Thanks!

Yes the one you got in your mail.
Take care not to lose it.
I am not sure if they give it again

Ah okay great.
Thank you!
I've unlocked my bootloader but have never once considered relocking it. Why would you lock it after unlocking it in the first place? I can't think of a single benefit.

I've seen some people claim they want to be as "close to stock as possible" when selling their phone. Unfortunately it doesn't really make a difference.
There are 3 states for the 2013 Moto X bootloader:
LOCKED Status:0
Unlocked Status:3
Locked Status:2
note: Status 2 is also known as relocked.
As users we can toggle it to either Status 2 or Status 3, but we can never set it back to Status 0. On Status 2 or 3, you'll get the Bootloader Unlocked warning message at reboot (where replacing the LOGO.BIN with custom one will hide the message).

I didn't actually. I just tried right now but got the following message.
(bootloader) FAIL: Please run fastboot oem lock begin first!
The reason I wanted to re-lock it was for purposes of my phone getting stolen. I'm assuming if it was relocked, the person wouldn't get the joy of installing a custom recovery.
Yeah kind of silly. In any case, couldn't get it to lock.

There is a process to re-lock which involves flashing the stock rom first, etc. and it does wipe the phone.
So if you re-lock, you'll also lose root. (at least until you unlock, flash custom recovery and root).

Yeah. I think I realized that I would need to wipe my phone again to re-lock it. I turned it back to stock so I can get the OTA which should hopefully come out soon.
I guess once they allow us to download stock 5.0.2, I'll do a re-lock then.
Thanks though for the info.

Re locking boot loader.

Hello! I just got a nexus 6 a few days ago, and I love this phone! However, I just read on here that relocking your bootloader is a bad idea? Well, I rooted my device and installed PAC ROM on it, then reflashed a stock image back to my nexus and relocked the bootloader, my phone is fine, no bootloops and no issues, does this pose a problem with OTA updates? Thanks! I really need to know because i would NOT wanna brick this thing! Thanks!

Thing is, when your bootloader is unlocked, the device is almost unbrickable. Also, you can be unlocked, 100% stock and still get OTA's if you want. If you have a locked bootloader, mess something up and end up in a bootloop, and can't boot to android, you're stuck.
Are you saying that OTA updates work even if your boot loader is open? Does it just check your system files and recovery? In theory, if I did an OTA update right now, and my bootloader was unlocked, it would install without problems?

Yes to all your questions.
Unlock it, its free insurance and wont change or harm a thing.
you can lock/unlock your bootloader anytime you want actually, you just have to make sure that you relock your bootloader sfter making sure that you can boot properly first. because if you can't boot, and your bootloader is locked, then you are just as good as bricked. because now, to unlock your bootloader, you have to enable allow oem unlock. and if you cant boot, you cant do that.

That said, since 5.1.1, doesn't "allow oem unlock" remain ticked / selected after a reboot now? If so, it's fine to relock it, even if it doesn't boot if that is ticked.

Yes, but in the case of an "accidentally" wiped OS, well, you know.
Alright guys, so I won't ever run into a problem with an OTA update with the bootloader unlocked? Thanks! You guys are awesome!

Well it shouldn't matter. When you tick that box, it writes the change to mmcblk0p18, which is OS independent. Now that booting the rom doesn't revert that partition, if it is ticked once, it shouldn't matter if there is an OS at all.

Correct. Bootloader status has no effect on OTA. Updated script checks boot.img (kernel), system.img, and recovery. All have to be unmodified. No root, no unencrypted kernel, stock 100%.

Scripts don't check recovery. It's just the OTA zip won't work without it.

Real quick easy noob question, no point in making a thread just for this so I'm asking here, is the Nexus 6 CPU an arm or arm64?

N6 is ARM. Arm 64 is for 64 bit devices such as the N9.
Clarification question
A question for clarification, as long as the bootloader is already unlocked, the "OEM Unlocking - Allow the bootloader to be unlocked" setting under Developer options doesn't affect anything?

Nexus 6 unlock bit reset possible?

Hello Folks,
I have already managed to reset the tamper and unlock bit on my OnePlus Two.
So i just bought a Nexus 6 and i am wondering if the unlock bit reset is possible here.
The Nexus 4 and 5 had a unlock bit in the "misc" partition.
I read somewhere that the Nexus 6 has some counter-measures against this kind of tampering.
Has anyone already tried it?
I can provide dumped partitions as i am already rooted.
I am hoping for a good Discussion

There's a tamper ? I wasn't aware. Just the lock logo on the splash screen when the bootloader is unlocked.

Oh sorry i made a mistake there, i meant the unlock bit, if i relock the bootloader the logo still appears right? so the bootloader will still show that it was unlocked or will it be in factory state?

There's not a trip tamper like Samsung's knox. You just unlock the bootloader and there's a lock logo. It also says unlocked in the bootloader screen. If you want to revert back you just relock and everything is as is. Google's Nexus is really the only device that is very open like that. Other devices and mfg. you have some kind of permanent trip.

Okay Thank you, I did not have a nexus device before so thats great.
I received the device unlocked because it was used by someone before so i thought it was locked and was showing the lock anyway. but just checked the bootloader and it really was unlocked. So thank you

By the way, Google may have modified their software, but I'll say it anyways.....whatever you do, DO NOT lock your bootloader without having OEM unlock checked first even if you are restoring to stock. There are many threads here where users have locked their bootloader then effectively brick their device. Make sure you have OEM unlock checked prior.
Having USB Debugging enabled would also be useful in case of a problem with the device.

fastboot oem lock, but still getting unlocked bootloader message

Through some miracle, I just unbricked my phone. I locked it and bricked it but then I flashed the stock 6.0.1 rom and i'm good!. I'm now at a status 2 because i unlocked and relocked it. I know you guys hate that because why relock it, but i'm returning it and wanted to play it safe.
Weird thing is I'm still getting the unlocked bootloader warning on power on. Any ideas why and how I can get rid of it? I thought for sure relocking would fix it.

This might not work with a locked bootloader, but you can give it a shot.
Download the boot logo from this thread that looks like the original one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mo...o-maxx-droid-turbo-x-style-logos-bin-t3407046
Double click on the .exe file while your phone is in bootloader mode and plugged into your computer.
Thanks ya, I have seen that logo fix floating around for the Droid Turbo but I didn't want to try until I had at least one confirmation that it could work on a relocked bootloader. Anyone have a guess/idea/or success story?

How to remove device unlocked screen (before logo splash)

After unlocking Z2 Plus bootloader, started to showing up on boot before logo splash:
"Your device has been unlocker and can't be trusted
To learn more, visit:
g.com/placeholder
If no key pressed:
You device will boot in 5 seconds"
Anyone knows how can I get rid of this message?
Already tried to flash factory splash.img with no success!
Thanks in advance!
there is no way you can get rid of this warning because i think it's deeply written in the kernel or your phone
I remember removing that screen on my old Moto G by flashing a custom boot image, I don't know if it's possible with this device as well, gotta do some research I guess.

I checked it this morning by connecting it to the PC and see there the state was still unlocked. Now I have locked it again to get the latest update.
Thanks
Anyone checked if there is /logo partition? That way it was possible to "hide" this message on Moto X Play (and probably other Lenovo-Motorola devices).
