[Q] Updates expectations - MeMO Pad 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
I'm looking to buy this tablet (me176cx) or galaxy tab 4... My doubt about this tablet is the hopes of an oficial update. How's Asus with the update policy? Is there a rom comunity?
Thanks

No there is not a rom community....I would go with the nexus or stick with the galaxy tab 4 if you're a samsung fan. Also, to note, everyone has their own individual experiences with companies....Mine with Asus is not good. I am sending back my 176cx for the second time and I've only had it a couple months. The customer service is awful. FWIW

There is no unlocked bootloader at this point. Without that, no roms. As far as updates, I am leaning towards we'll see one. Personally if I had to do it over again, I'd have bought a 2013 nexus or the tab 4. Who knows, maybe I'll see some earth shattering update but at this point my Galaxy S3 actually runs better. I see slow response and horrid memory management on this device. Apps closing themselves, streaming almost impossible. I'm actually shocked Asus ever made a nexus device. Imo they learned nothing from it. Ultimately though, I will probably shy away from Intel based devices in the future. Even the Kindle Fire wouldn't have been a bad choice. You have to sideload Google but that doesn't seem like too big of a deal.

^^ Completely agree.

I'm not happy with my me572 (which is supposed to be more performant) either. It runs out of memory after a day even after killing absolutely everything and clearing all cache. I basically have to restart this device at least once a day to properly use it. It's great for media consumption (good screen and micro SD slot) and the occasional Web surfing, but performance is awful. The nexus 7 2013 is a much, much better option. At this point I'm considering returning it (got two more weeks left), add cash and get the Galaxy tab s, or the IPad mini retina.
But this is definitely my last Asus product ever, if they would have unlocked the bootloader and let us run cyanogenmod this tab would be at least enjoyable.

Still worth it?

I've been thinking recently about getting a tablet, and I've decided that 7-inch would be the best option for me due to the portability of the form factor and really not needing anything larger.
Right now, the options are pretty slim since I'm looking for quality. I'm considering either the GT or the Nook Color at this point in time, but I'm not sure. I want the quality and 'out of the box' readiness of the GT, but at this point in the tablet game (admittedly, not much time has passed, but tech zooms), I'm not sure if it's worth it to shell out the extra money since it might be rendered essentially obsolete by something 'better' in just a few months.
My main concern here is dev & update support. Is the Tab expected to be getting 3.2 anytime soon? How active is the dev community? Also, games are a big consideration for me. How well does the Tab run some of the more recent games (I guess GameLoft games come to mind right now, since they seem to be some of the most graphically intensive).
Some help from Tab owners would be great. Thanks.
I just think that sometimes having faster specs and newer updates doesnt make the experience any better. i have had mine for 2 months and i use it all day and all night. It keeps me from firing up my laptop most of the time and the size makes it real handy.
Faster specs and new updates might make it faster but mine is fast enough rooted and running overcome. why fix if it is not broke
i would say well worth it still but wouldnt get with a contract.

The dev community is terrific. I got my tab about a month and a half ago and had some similar concerns before I got it. Just a heads up though, there is supposed to be a new 7" tab coming in the fall that is basically an updated version of our tab.
Some of the pros that I like about this is the size (can fit in almost any front pocket), price (didn't pay very much for it or the service), and that my wife doesn't like android.
As far as 3.2, there is a dev working on porting it over to a gingerbread base.
I use mine for games sometimes and haven't run into an issue yet.

Right now is absolutely the "worth-it" time to get a Tab 7 because the prices are so good if you don't mind "used but mint condition". I scored my Verizon Tab 7 for $200 on CList and it was practically new and mint. The GSM ones are my preferred choice but those fetch a slightly higher premium, but i'm fine with the VZW one. I take it everywhere, use it for music, internet, email, basically a gateway to the world.
As for games, the Tab has the PowerVR SGX gpu, so it's dang potent. Runs all the games splendidly. Even has better video codecs/support than all these Tegra 2 devices.
I remember i almost slapped myself because i had spent $500 and tax on the HTC Flyer and compared to what i got the Tab for it was a no brainer, back the Flyer went.
I also heard there is a new version of our tab come out soon. You might wait for it.
Yes, this is the best tab ever. I love its portability and + its phone ability. You will never regret it. GO for it!!!

Thanks all. This info has really helped. The tab seems like it could the the right choice.

[Argument] Galaxy Note vs Galaxy Nexus

Hi all,
I am not normally the person to open threads but I have a slightly luxorious problem
So here it goes:
I have two devices at home, the galaxy note and the galaxy nexus and I want to sell one (UK).
I cannot, however, make my mind up on which one to keep so I was wondering what your thought were and what's the pros and cons for both devices.
I know this forum might be a little bit one sided but I would love to get your opinions.
Cheers
The Note is clearly superior in every aspect. I waited for the Nexus myself but was sorely disappointed when it arrived. Now that official ICS is just Weeks away there's absolutely zero reason for the Nexus.
Sent from my superior GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
THe EU Nexus only have 16GB storage and the lack of a micro sd card slot is a deal breaker for me.
For a mobile device we power users need storage space for music, videos and high definition video recording.
The Note also have better hardware, and will get ICS very soon.
The Nexus does have ICS right now and receive update directly from Google. But Samsung has been very active in pushing out new firmware for the Note so far, and you can alway root and remove apps to make the Note a stock Android experience.
So if you can overlook the size of the Note, I'd sell the Nexus.
I am in the same boat. Bought Nexus few weeks back and I am torn between the devices but as days are passing by, I find myself coming back to Note.
ICS is beautiful and very intuitive for my use. I like swipe to dismiss functionality of entire OS. And Nexus as a complete package better as a phone and music player.I am favouring the Nexus slightly in terms of Music playback. The output is slightly more warm on Nexus by default. On Note, I find myself needing to tinker the equiliser a bit to get desired output on my TF10 Pro IEMs.
I am not avid mobile gamer but I do play few casual games like Angry birds, Where is my water every now and then and this is where Nexus is frustrating device. Nexus takes anywhere between 7-10 seconds to load new level or go back to main menu (this is very noticeable in "Where is my Water"). On Note this takes 1 or 2 seconds max. Its almost instant. This is irritating on Nexus.
Similar experience can be had when loading large PDF files or Large excel sheets. Nexus takes considerably more time and having been used to speed of Note, this is something I cannot leave with. Not to mention Nexus cannot playback all HD mkvs or even HD home video clips smoothly without conversion or transcoding.
All this is making me want to ditch Nexus and stick with Note. But god!!! I love vanilla ICS.
In the end, I simply cannot settle for slower device just to get vanilla ICS as some of my productivity is getting affected.
Thank you for all your replies but please do keep them coming.
I am using the note constantly and I am loving it but for some reason I shouldn't because the nexus is the flagship device yet it has many drawbacks it shouldn't have.
No micro SD is hugely disappointing on the nexus plus gaming, browsing and internet is much much better on the note.

Its not flagship device to be honest.
Nexus is a development platform device. Its a first ICS device and thats exactly what it is.
Even Nexus S was basically a original Galaxy S with minor changes. But it was gingerbread development device. This has been a trend with nexus devices. They are quickly followed by a device thats better than nexus in terms of hardware.
Note and even SGS2 is faster and better in terms of hardware (with exception of display when you compare it to SGS2, but Korea has SGS2 HD version with 720P screen ).
But Nexus will remain popular with developers and android purists.
Keep the Note, no contest here.
Assuming the same screen problems, same black rendering problems, etc, why the hell would you keep the Nexus? Only reason I can think is the size.
Whatever the Nexus gets, the Note would probably get 3 ~ 5 months after. Is that such a big wait?
first i wanted a nexus, but missing a sd-slot to me it's a absolutely no go. so i've purchased a note, and now i wouldn't give it away anymore. to me ics wasn't that advantage compared with gb, and now the update is around the corner.
Honestly?
After using the Note for a few weeks, every other phone on the market feels like a child's toy in my hand. Small and insignificant. The build quality is superior to the Nexus, and the screen cannot be beat.
There's only 1 possible reason you wouldn't choose the Note. And that is it's too big for you. On paper, the Note beats the Nexus hands down. Especially after rooting and installing a speedy custom rom. Easy decision I rekon.
I am in the process of selling the Nexus. I have considered all your input and I greatly appreciate it.
The note is better than the Nexus full stop. I have large hands so the size doesn't really bother me as I am hardly "on the phone" anyway.
I mostly use it for sms and emails so phoning is not an issue.
Thank you for your input and feel free to close the thread or keep the "argument" going.
Theyre both great phones. If you ok with the size then the Note is better if not then Nexus simple as that.
The note is well above the nexus is the only thing good is that the nexus has ics but once the notice to actulice ics will be well above the nexus

decided to move on

I've had some great use out of my Nexus 4. As a phone, I've absolutely loved it and when I upgrade to Lollipop, I felt like it was reborn, but unfortunately the last few months have proved testing, coming across great new phones that all have MicroSD slots to expand them and unfortunately with just 16GB of internal memory, I'm finding it increasingly hard to use my phone to my enjoyment. Sure, I could dump all my photos onto the Cloud, or I could backup to my computer, or I could do something else... but the point is, I don't want to. I wanted my Nexus 4 to have an SD slot, and I knew I was taking a risk years ago when I bought it. Luckily, it hasn't manifested itself like I expected, although maybe that's because I was careful (no games, no music, routinely deleting old stuff to clean it up, backing up videos onto my FTP server when it got too full etc).
My Nexus 4 has been a terrific device, and since the Lollipop upgrade, has felt like a brand new phone, and if it wasn't for the lack of expandable memory, I wouldn't have considered getting rid of it, but unfortunately the time has come.
I've now switched to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G. It's a budget device (costing just £108 as I didn't pay tax) but is more powerful and has a bigger screen. It also has 4G and expandable memory. It's an interesting upgrade for a Nexus user. I feel like I've gone from a premium device to a budget device and that will take some getting used to, but I think the pros outweigh the cons.
Interestingly, Xiaomi has a huge following in China, India, Malaysia, Singapore, whereas Nexus has a huge following across the rest of the world so I will be experiencing how custom ROM's appear for this phone in a totally different way.
Anyway, as the end draws near for Nexus 4, I'm sure a few of you will be jumping ship soon too, but one things for sure, it's still a great device if you can handle the lack of internal storage, so good on those who do
I have 300 songs, 20 apps, Nokia Here maps of my country (300mb), a few HD videos, 50-ish photos and i still have 5,6GB left.
I know some people use their phones for multimedia and easily fill up even 32gigs, but Nexus 4 isnt a multimedia phone, not with its 2100mah battery and its 4.7" screen
I'm thinking of giving my Nexus 4 to sister this summer and getting something new, but still haven't decided what to get thats not very expensive but good, and i don't want a Nexus 5 because it's too similar to Nexus 4 with similar problems

I don't use my phone for multimedia as such, but I do take a lot of photos. I had about 5.9 GB's of photos on it. which, btw, were a nightmare to get off seeing as MTP is seemingly completely incapable of transferring such a large number of files (ended up installing an FTP server on the phone and using FileZilla instead). Considering you only get about 12GB of usable data (much of which is taken up by apps) meant I had very little left. I do get lots of WhatsApp photos too and I guess I've been lazy about deleting them. Ultimately, I grew frustrated about the fact I was constantly running out of space and without deleting stuff, I really couldn't do much about it. I spent a lot of time going through and deleting stuff but I only ever freed up about 1GB or 2GB which meant I was never too far away from filling my phone.
I kept hearing the argument of 'go cloud', 'cloud storage', 'welcome to the cloud', 'use the Nexus with the cloud', but when it came to actually use the cloud it consistently failed on me. I took several videos at a concert last year amounting to a few GB's. I figured this is exactly what the cloud is for seeing as they weren't desperately needed on my phone as such. I tried to upload them (tried both 3G and WiFi), and the Google Drive app seemed completely incapable of handling large files. It was fine for images, or small videos, but uploading these larger videos, it lagged to the point the phone became totally unresponsive and despite waiting for hours, nothing happened and I eventually had to reboot the phone. I googled the issue and there wasn't much detail of it on the Internet. Perhaps I was a rare case but it meant I had to upload them to my FTP server which wasn't ideal either.
I was very close to getting rid of the N4 when it was running KitKat, as I felt it had lost all its bite. I've had phones in the past go stale with time and ultimately, I was happy to move on. With the Nexus 4, I upgraded to Lollipop and it felt like a brand new phone. It totally changed my mind, but then I started having the storage problems again and despite persevering I just got bored. Maybe I should have given out to the cloud, but as an option as is, I wasn't all that keen automatically sync'ing every photo the cloud. Plus, I never felt Google quite got the implementation of the cloud right. Ironically, my new phone, the Xiaomi, they've got it exactly how I always envisioned Google would do it, in that their Gallery app has a local tab and an 'Online' tab, so you can sync all your Gallery photos to the cloud and instantly pull them, rather than having to go on the Photos app or Drive app or whatever. On the whole, it's just a better implementation. Daft considering it's not required on a phone now kitted with a massive Samsung UHS SD card.
I've sold my Nexus 4 to my old man for £70. About £30 cheaper than what I could on eBay but I couldn't be arsed with the hassle. He'll use it and it'll be a great phone for him (his S2 is as good as dead it's that slow now).
Unfortunately, I wanted the Nexus 6 but Google let me down by overpricing it. If they'd dropped the price of the N5, I might have considered another go, but I'm not willing to pay full price for a phone that is a year old. No chance.
I guess I should have upgraded to the N5 when it first came out... but hey ho, we live and learn. I'm now a Xiaomi customer lol
I wouldn't get a Xiaomi as i'm worried about OS updates.
You say KitKat was awful for you and Lollipop rejuvenated your N4 but my case is different. KitKat was the best for me, apart from the pulldown notification bar which was laggy sometimes. 5.0 was the worst thing i've ever came across. I was less frustrated when i was on Bada OS on my old Samsung Wave III. I'm now on the unofficial 5.1 port which is even better than KitKat.
If i were to compare 5.0 and 5.1 on the N4, 5.0 would be an old Ford Focus and 5.1 would be an V8 Aston Martin. Unbelieveably slow experience on 5.0.
The Redmi Note 4G is in some ways a downgrade, IMO. Can't argue too much though, given the cost. Better camera, SD slot (but less native storage), bigger screen, bigger battery. But the SD400/Adreno 305 is inferior to to the S4 Pro/320 that the Nexus 4 has, despite the tick higher clock speed. But if it works for you, then great.

Interestingly, I think you'd be surprised that Xiaomi seem to have a decent reputation for updates, but more importantly there's a massive userbase. I was astonished by how many custom roms are already appearing and there's already a pretty stable cm12 except minus the camera.
Lollipop was a huge upgrade for me on nexus 4. The phone was fast and felt supercharged. To be fair, perhaps I was lucky.

the GPU is a downgrade but I'm not a massive games player. The less native storage is solved by folder mount. The CPU is about the same, roughly. Perhaps a tiny downgrade although Antutu puts this above the N4. It also brings new connectivity in 4G and better WiFi I believe.
The cost is unbeatable.
How long have you been using Nexus 4? I decided to move on to Galaxy S6 and try 3rd party zl or mpj external battery case. It has been two years since bought the Nexus 4, but now Phone gets hot and battery rapidly discharges

Goodbye buy then.
i can't understand why "new thread"?
Well, a quick update. It didn't take long, but I'm currently flashing ROM's left right and centre lol, trying to pick which one I prefer the most. There goes my genuine attempts to avoid flashing any custom ROM's and giving it a chance to impress in its stock form.
CM12 is seriously good but missing camera functionality at the moment. Everything else is stable but the camera is a killer for me.
CM11 is fully stable so I think I'll end up settling for that.
MIUI6 is fantastic in it's ways but unfortunately, is a bit too overwhelming. Too much pretty stuff at the expense of genuine usability.
MIUI5 i've not tried yet.
Here's the thing though, I'm already embracing my ability to use an SD card. I could never perform a full Nandroid on my N4, realistically.... I've already got one for this phone... and I've got a load of ROM's dumped so I can test.
Performance wise, I'd say this phone is about the same or slightly less than the N4, but the fact it has an FM radio a SD slot, and a few other cool features makes up for it.... and the big screen, which does a cracking job of trying to look HD (it isn't quite HD).
One feature which CM12 is offering but I'm yet to try is an FM Tx. Now that would seriously be an incredible feature if it actually works. Probably doesn't though to be fair. However the MI3 and MI4 both have FM Tx's so who knows?
In truth though, I do miss the N4. It had a certain charm about it that this phone doesn't have. This phone is a budget phone, and it's very obvious. The Nexus 4 was a budget phone, but was built like a premium device. I really do feel like I've gone from a premium phone to a budget phone and it's certainly noticeable to a degree. That said, the touchscreen feels more responsive than the N4 and the colour reproduction is superior. The battery also blows the N4 out of the water and I have to say, it's amazing how long you can get out of this phone. I'm a serious power user, so the N4 really wasn't appropriate for me.... but this is ideal. The N4 however, is the first phone I've ever owned that I didn't hate by the end.
It's a shame the LG Optimus G had no SD slot either. I would have happily gone for that.
Regardless, happy at the moment and enjoying the liberation of plenty of space. I'm still watching the price of the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 though. That's a fantastic beast and would be my first choice if it wasn't so expensive.

I'm wondering if Google will put out a 5.1 release. Quite obvious that the Nexus 4 hardware is easily capable, so really, it will be down to whether Google are ready to kill off the old girl. At least you know with Nexus that there will always be custom ROM's available to support you down the line eh?

Good stuff. I think in a time where phones are now becoming almost too powerful, the only thing that Google need to get sorted is that the updates keep coming and that manufacturers should be expected to provide them too.
Thanks for sharing

This should be perfectly possible on the Nexus 4. I do it with T-Mobile here in the US.

If the Tab S1 does not get v6 Marshmallow, will you buy another Samsung tablet/phone?

If the Tab S1 does not get v6 Marshmallow I will not be buying another Samsung tablet or phone again, "cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye"
John.
Yeah, I don't think samsung cares if you or everyone on XDA don't buy their products. We make up less than 1% of their market. To answer your question, I will probably buy another samsung tablet if my tab S dies as I bought this device without really expecting any modifications through firmware updates. One should not buy a product with hopes of future improvements, except for maybe nexus ones.
Well i am still on kitkat as the buggy v5.0.2 lollipop is a joke, we did not even get the stable v5.1, I have had to disable half the apps and turn off sync to reduced the crazy battery drain while in sleep mode, so V6 mashmallow is my only hope for a stable low sleep drain without disabling everything.
John.
The screen (LED, aspect ratio, and resolution) and physical home button are the primary reasons I got this tablet. Those are more important than OS since custom ROMS are available. My previous tablet was a Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, which never got LP. So I installed CM 12. I'll install CM13 on this tablet if Samsung never updates it.
In regards to battery life, I keep it on airplane mode all the time and turn off WIFI when I'm not going to use the tablet for more than 8 hours. I'm running IronKernel with the developer's suggested settings.
---------- Post added at 09:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:22 AM ----------
My mom has a Galaxy Tab 4. She doesn't know what OS it has, nor does she care. My wife hates updates on her Samsung and Apple devices. She calls them "downdates" because they make unwanted changes and she has to learn how to use the device all over again.
When I bought this tablet I was aware how awful Samsung updates are.
But I don't have regrets because it was pretty cheap when I bought it and in my country there is not much options: you have to go for LG, Samsung, Apple or non-brand tablets.
If you ignore the lack of official support and the capacitative buttons it is a really good device.
I'm on 5.0.2 and I use my tablet quite a lot. I get very good performance and average to good battery life. I don't really get what people are ranting about. Look at the market today. This device is the best in class in terms of price. Don't even get me going on the screen.
Why wouldn't a customer expect firmware updates for a premium device that cost me £400 new? To stop supporting flagship devices (which this was) less than two years old is ridiculous and will stop people buying their products (it will stop me) when other companies do.
Considering the fact that several sources say we are getting the update I don't feel the need to worry.
But yes I would order another tablet from Samsung.
The day you picked up the phone, you bought it as it is with no attached promise to update. That simple.
I bought it for the hardware more than the OS update since the OS changes are not know at the time it was bought. I return my TabPro 10.1 for my Tab S 10.5 because the specs were much better.
I had an Asus Tranformer Prime prior to my Samsung Tab and I hated it because of the hardware issues it had. I would buy another TabS in an heart beat.
No, obviously.
Like a few others I primarily bought the hardware (AMOLED 16:10) over the firmware version. To support that comment, just a few days ago I pulled my Nexus 10 unused out of the closet. That device never officially received Marshmallow but there was OmniROM v6.0.1 that became available. It was easy to flash and you can feel that Marshmallow makes the N10 a smoother experience. With that real life experience behind me and my TabS warranty up in May/2016, I'll just flash a TabS Marshmallow ROM at that time assuming nothing comes from Samsung.
I will not argue with you that Samsung is pitiful with regard to timely updates and even how long they support their devices. To my mind they should sell a touchwize version and a vanilla Android version at no discount. They may just find that more people buy the vanilla version and they can save themselves a lot of software development money.
I've already posted my findings of how bad Samsung is at software development when I went to theme touchwize. Their lack of basic software development practices prevents them from any rapid deployment of updates.
If put in charge of there OS software group I'd fire the managers on the spot, implement tight controls and fire any developer who does not adhere. The cost saving, increase in issuing updates and reputation improvement would be staggering, especially with so many devices to support.
As long as they're what I consider the better option, yeah. Software updates are just part of the equation. And I'll take oled over updates any day.
The original question posed by the OP implies implicitly that the "fact" that Marshmallow is not coming to Tab S is some kind of a terrible tragedy. But is it really a tragedy? I am on a stock Lollipop, and I think the experience is great. Nice, smooth, functional gui. Easy to root and modify. All apps work, and Android apps will support 5.0 for a long, long time.
if it 2x spec upgrade from tab S + 16:9/16:10 screen then maybe.
other than that, I'll hold
not much tablet option that have simcard + good specs.
Don't get me wrong. I think the tablet is very good. However I could only buy the 16GB version when it came out thinking that Lollipop was going to give the full micro SD card marshmallow does. As we all know it does not. IF Samsung do update it will be a superb tablet. They need to stop making so many devices if they cannot update them!
Not sure. This was my first and only tablet to be honest.
Do I like what I purchased? Yes I use it a lot, actually more then I thought I would. Its my go to mobile media consumption, internet, show watching, mobile gaming device (thanks to emulators).
Do I like Samsungs horrible support? Of course not. But thanks for places like XDA, do we really need to rely on Samsung to give us a great rom?
I wont be buying another tablet until something BIG with breakthrough technology comes along.
For now, I am content with what I have, even though I feel I overpaid for it lol
I will absolutely not buy another Samsung device... period. between this and my note 4.. I am done with the bloatware and crap software added on. 100% nexus in the future
I would go Nexus, but the fact they have no sd card slot is a game changer for me.
If they release a tablet with 4K super amoled and same aspect ratio to the Tab S1 then I probably would. Still the best in class screen IMO...

What would you buy to replace your 8.4 Tab S ?

Love my Tab S but thinking on upgrading in the near future. What do you guys think is a honorable replacement?
Nothing.
There does not exist a comparable replacement. The Android tablet market made about three steps back since the Tab S series were released. Seriously.

Totally agree!! Tab s 8.4 is my tablet for years now. I am bothered that I can't find a perfect rom for it to flash (some things do not work on each rom) but no matter how ofter I search for a replacement, I always go back to my conclusion: There is no tablet like this! And sometimes I wonder why Samsung made such a GREAT table THAT early. Even the next ones (Tab S2, S3 etc) are not THAT much of a leap forward. Either poor battery, or lower screen quality, or no IR etc etc... So currently I stick with my beloved Tab S 8.4.
Now...to find a new rom......

Well, S3 was a big leap forward in terms of SoC, but with its 600 dollar MSRP, what a poor value it was. And the S4 was good, but pricing completely mad. For that much money I can buy an entry level business class ultrabook. Tablet is great for media consumption, reading, and entertainment, but let's admit it's kind of a toy, it's not a business tool, and for what they offered the successive Tab S-line models were ridiculously overpriced. My Tab S 8.4 does feel kind of slow and I guess I could replace it when I see a tablet for better specs that's priced right, perhaps a heavily discounted Tab S4 during the holidays.

Well, for me a tablet IS a business tool as I use it twice a week (or more) for talks and presentations. And furthermore I like the 8.4" size and am not fond of bigger screens. Unfortunately Samsung doesn't release any decent small-sized tablets anymore. All the good stuff (RAM, CPU etc) exist on the bigger S3, S4, S5. The 8-inch-sized S and S2 were the only ones that did the trick for me. And currently upgrading to an S2 is not a good idea I believe. My (older) S 8.4 has better screen resolution, bigger battery, IR support... So yeah, I stick with it, for a little while at least. I really hope Samsung releases a smaller Tab S5 or (future) S6 (If that is even a thing) on a 8" form factor. I would really like to upgrade this sometime. Until then, it is the best table I ever had. Not gonna change it.

Huawei is still making nice high end tablet with 8 inch screen (Mediapad M6), but sadly because of trade war, we're not going to see it on our shores.

I replaced my T-800 with the Tab S4 when Best Buy was blowing them out at $260 or less this past Christmas.
While my Tab S was very sexy and I had the Logitech Type S keyboard I loved it very much it was a no brainer upgrading at that point.
Here is my thread explaining the $260 sale:
https://slickdeals.net/f/13607677-s...-s4-64gb-tablet-wi-fi-black-260-in-store-ymmv
I would expect the S6 is about to go on deep discount soon so I would be on the look out if you're in the market for a new Samsung Tab.
I just sold off my T-800 in perfect shape, I do plan to hold onto my T-700 as Samsung just does not make sexiness like that any longer.
Hi guys I recently tried to understand whether it was possible to replace my Tab S 8.4 LTE and... I'm astonished. Android tablets are dead. I paid 350€ for this tablet at launch so taking into account 6 years of technological development I was expecting to find at the same price the following specs: 64-128gb of storage, 8gb of ram, same screen since oled technology had some troubles advancing, modern high end processor, a camera with not necessarily more pixels but with less noise and more details, no IR because we don't use TVs anymore.
What I found instead was: crappy low end overpriced tablets, with barely any ram, and no advancements whatsoever in productivity applications. The obvious choice would be to go for an x86 Windows tablet... But I don't dare to run Windows with less than 16gb of ram (any browser uses 5-6gb of ram to begin with with my usage scenario) and onestly those tablets have poor battery life and there are no small tablets to begin with. This leaves only the ipad mini... Which I had terrible experience with (ipad mini 2 was dropped from support and update very quickly and became slow as hell with the last updates it received).
Do you guys have any suggestion? Huaway is out of the question... I don't want to be caught in a stupid useless war.
There is no suitable replacement. I use mine as a phone and there is just nothing with as large a display that has an earpiece that you can hold up to your face and make calls with. I now own 3, 2 working, so I have spare parts as bits break.
Actually that is a usage scenario that happened a couple of times. My phone was temporarily down (anything from a bricked rom to a simply drained battery) and I always simply took the sim out of it, stuck into the tablet and continued my day with no problems whatsoever. Before buying this tablet I was super into the Asus transformer line. A phone that you insert in a screen that becomes a tablet with additional battery life, then you attach the keyboard and bump in terms of productivity. They where unreasonably costly to begin with had bad software support, and super died probably because the company got more money selling separate devices. I tried to create my own version of it with a raspberry pi but it was obviously very clunky.
hi you all!
i have been researching about this subejct and found this thread...
i was also looking into replacing my 8 inch tab S tablet but havent found anything good out there... and i thought tablets were getting better and better each release... like cellhphones...

Hi There is no replacement to our beloved tablet except for the Huawei Mediapad. Chuwi does make a very compelling android tablet with keyboard... but it is way bigger than the Tab S 8.4.
If you don't mind a slightly shorter screen-on time with your current battery you can change the CPU governor to something more performing. That coupled with a thermal mod gave a totally new life to my tablet (I was close to trashing it before these 2 things together). Now its running so great that I'm tempted to buy a new battery ( or 2 batteries hacked up together) and go on with it for a couple more years.

Hi yes I'm using the latest Lineage OS Deathly (android 7.1). The rom is probably close to its EOL since there is much less activity and updates. ROM. I've undervolted the tab and put an aluminium bar on the SOC to stop it from overheating... I would not describe the experience as high end but it's way better than before. The same developer made roms also for the WIFi only model and for the 2 bigger models.
