Probably a stupid question, but please remember I came from an HTC.... so be nice....
On a nexus 6 when I flash a rom, beit custom or stock does it flash the firmware as well?
Also, coming from an HTC I had to take the OTA to update the firmware and then flash my favorite rom based on said firmware to fully be updated.
Does this apply to nexus devices, specifically nexus 6?

no. just flash the rom, it has everything you need, but the gapps(google apps), which is a second flash.

I rarely use anyting not based on stock... if I flash a stock LRX22C will i get the firmware as well?
Same goes for when the 5.0.* update rolls out and someone makes a flashable stock rom based on that build. Firmware included?
There's no such thing as "firmware" on the nexus in regards to updates. In fact, theres no such thing on any of these phones, just some silly carriers decide to change things on HTC devices to be called "firmware" - incorrectly I might add... Sooooo short answer, forget about "firmware" as its not a thing.

No probs.. But actually I'll elaborate a little more...
Full ROM flash from fastboot is also referred to as "flashing factory images) is the equivalent of flashing a HTC RUU. It will include a system.img (ROM), radio.img, boot.img (kernel), recovery.img and bootloader.img.
OTA update will include usually full radio.img, patches to multiple apks (and more) in system (ROM), patch to update recovery, boot loader and often a full boot.img or kernel patch.
Custom rom or converted stock ROM zip will usually be a system image and a boot image.
Hope this helps a little.

So when an updated android version is released, in order to get the best possible performance (on whichever ROM i choose to use) I should just flash the factory image in order to get the latest radio, bootloader and kernel?

If you're staying stock unrooted, ota is the easiest. You'll get latest everything. If you're rooted or have any modifications, standard ota will fail, in which case, factory image is best IMHO.

Thanks! I'm bouncing between CleanROM and Chroma..(Can't decide which i like better) so OTA is useless for me.
I do appreciate the help, I've been trying to figure it out myself ever since i got my Nexus but I couldnt find any solid info.

No worries. Well which ever you stick with, just flash a ROM.zip as and when updates are released by your dev. Forget about updating radio and bootloader unless you feel you need to.

I got my Nexus One last week and quickly rooted it and flashed CyanogenMod. Before I did, I did a nandroid backup of the original ROM. If I flash that original ROM back, will I get OTA updates again or is there something more I need to do?

you will get ota updates again if there is.
wipe, before you restore.
My understanding was once you unlock the bootloader you're done. No more OTA updates.

Thats not true. The ROMs cooked here are simply put, blocking updates from TMobile or Google. From what i understand Google will be posting updates on the google.com/phone website.
Its the recovery that is the holdup is my understanding. Any ota that requires the recovery to install will fail because even if you reinstall back to the stock recovery it is no longer officially signed and the ota will only install with an officially signed recovery. An ota that does not use the recovery like the ota 3g update/fix will install fine unless it is blocked by the rom developer. All of this is a non issue anyways. From the point of initial release to when you can download the stock 2.2 rom and flash it yourself should you choose will be a very short.

Why wouldn't a restore of the original recovery image not be signed? Isn't the signature part of the image itself?
I dont understand this myself but as I read it something about dumping it strips it of its officially signed status. If I were forced to guess, and this is only a guess, its to prevent modifying it and reinstalling it for the obvious reasons. As it is I can say that despite seeing a thread like this daily at times not a single person has reported having reverted and then beinng able to install the 2.1 ota when it went down on any of them and yet there must of been scads of such people who tried just that. A number of them on the other hand have reported being able to get ota that did not require the recovery to install. In the interest of fairness I am repeating what I have read, I posseess no expertise myself. If this is inaccurate I hope that I will be corrected and we will all learn something.
Well...when 2.2 is released, can you just go to google and download it or is the only way to get the update via OTA?
Nah, that is what I was saying, you can download a stock 2.2 rom here and flash it via recovery like any other rom as soon as the smart types get er whipped up, should be very soon after release. I havnt seen anything official but as said above I have read that it will be up on googles phone site.
You can download the original Rom from Modaco and in fastboot flash the signed system file boot file and recovery if you do that u will receive the ota update from Google its the recovery that effects ota there's detail steps on nexus one forum search rolling back to stock Rom I did it and it works hope this helps
-------------------------------------
Sent from my Nexus One
Did you get the 2.1 that way?
I did I installed the original Rom that was sent on the nexus one after about 5 mins I got the ota update that enables multi touch so it does work and everything works fine

Sent from my Nexus One
I installed the nexus experience rom on my device over 5.1, and it's fantastic, but I don't have GPS. If someone has a 5.1 or 5.0 flashable that I could use to quickly get a GPS lock, I'd be super appreciative. I really have no desire to backup the damned thing, flash stock recovery, etc. Like at all.
Thanks!

i currently have TWRP flashed - are there flashable stock zips out there for download? Barring that, where can I get the various versions of the stock flashables meant for stock recovery? I'm not seeing this info in the usual places. I currently have the 5.1 leak flashed, but I think I'm going to go with 5.0.2 with xposed's memory fixes for now as rooting 5.1 seems to make it behave oddly.

It's only Kitkat, but you can get Lolipop with an OTA update. You will probably have to flash the stock recovery to make the OTA work.
Just updated the OP. Any flashable stock would be really helpful at this point. I don't really have enough time to flash a million things these days...
Hi,
I am sorry if this has already been addressed, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyway I am trying to get the OTA update and my main goal is to do it without losing all my data (yes I have a backup, yes I'd rather stay as far away from wiping my device as possible). My device is on the stock sense ROM, I have S-OFF and I am rooted with TWRP recovery. I've been following this guide, ( http://www.theandroidsoul.com/t-mob...mware-and-recovery-version-1-32-531-33-82340/ ) and I've gotten to the part where I need to flash the system file, this is where I get stuck I continuously get an error that reads "target reported max download size of 536870912 bytes
Invalid sparse file format at header magi". If anyone has any idea how to fix this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You must be new to S-OFF. Well let me tell you... you're S-OFF!!! you don't need to do all that. What you're really looking for is to update your firmware without wiping. Follows instruction here in the OP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/development/firmware-t3068243
It's pretty direct. Download the NOWIPE zip and fastboot flash it. Done. Firmware will be updated. You then can just download an updated stock rom and install that with TWRP.

Looks like you're trying to flash an OTA. What I meant was to flash a stock ROM... but I looked in our dev section and noticed nobody has created one lol.
I'm a bit rusty on flashing stock stuff, but you should really ask the guys in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmo...lease-read-rooting-using-twrp-t3069022/page34
My guess is that you just want to update your system too. I think i saw someone dumped the system and boot img and you can flash those, but I don't recall the exact method.
Basically S-OFF allows you to access different.. uuhh "partitions" (sorry bad terminology) because it bypasses any security checks. Partitions such as your firmware and radio. That's pretty much what S-OFF does. It allows you to flash any of the firmware and radios across all the different versions.
I would suggest to take a dip into custom roms and choose T-mobile as the carrier lol. I personally like Leedroid's rom, he keeps it pretty stock and is an awesome responsive dev.

Alright, Ill look into that thread. I've read about S-OFF in the past and I'm very familiar with rooting and ROMs from my last few phones but OTAs were never something I worried about (since I always used a custom ROM). In all honesty I like sense 7, and I need WiFi calling for work (I spend a lot of time in places without service, like data centers), so I think I am going to try to stick with stock. Anyway, thanks for all your help!

Yeah I can tell by how long you've been a member here. But the thing with HTC ONE is that a lot of the custom roms are based off stock and they even compile it so that the aroma installer allows you to choose your carrier so that it will install it based off of your carrier's stock base. I work in a similar environment and also need wifi calling and these custom roms have that feature.
LeeDroid, insertcoin, viperrom (off the top of my head) should have working wifi calling.
Basically you install their rom and they ask you which carrier you want to install it for... choose T-mobile. And you should be set. Now I know that the new fw was just released for T-mobile, so I'm not sure if insertcoin and Viper have updated theirs yet, but i know for sure that LeeDroid has updated his. Give it a shot and come back to the custom flashing world lol
OOPS looks like LeeDroid hasn't pushed the T-mobile update yet he's planning to, so probably tomorrow.

So I have been looking around in the Development forum and there are so many ROM options out there now. I have been on CM 12 nightlies for so long now I am out of the loop on stock builds and all. I am looking to just go back to a completely stock build (with root). Can anyone point me in the right direction for the files I need?
I have a Google Store bought N6 and I am currently on Verizons network.
Thanks!
EDIT: I would also like to be on the latest (and greatest) build.

sure.. https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images?hl=en
the only way back to stock isnt by flashing roms via twrp, its by flashing a factory image. on top of that, this is a basic element that you HAVE TO learn before ever rooting your phone.

Okay... I guess that makes sense, and to obtain root I would simply flash the SuperSU.zip from Recovery after I have completed the factory image restore? Do I need to re-flash Recovery?

after, you would need to flash twrp recovery, then flash supersu from twrp. so yes.
but, if you really dont have to, dont relock your bootloader

We have a lot of people in panic state over trying to relock their bootloader, and to further emphasize what Simms said, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RELOCK BOOTLOADER, there are specific procedures to do that but locking it just isn't necessary
This is probably a newb question. I've rooted and flashed many roms but never really messed with the kernal. I have 7.1.1 Pure Nexus and I think I have the same baseband as I did on 6.0. Or maybe it's in the ROM? I googled a bit but if someone can point me in the right direction then I can download and flash.

So far it's super responsive and smooth. With 7.1.1 is got better and now more so so I'll do bootloader now.
