I've owned a One previously. I got this one off ebay, refurbished. It works beautifully however, I have noticed a problem with the headphone socket.
When I connect a headset with a mic and button to the phone, the button will not function as it should. It will either pause/play the track (it does this rarely), as it should. But more likely it will fast forward/or slightly rewind the track. I use Doggcatcher and tried Pocketscasts. Both do the same thing.
If I speak to someone with the headset in and press the button to the end call, nothing happens. I can hear this hiss and hear mic feedback like the call is connected. The screen will not light up and nothing works until I perform a hard reset.
I blamed the rom, but I have tried 5 roms now and all the same. I have blown into the headphone jack and tried to look to anything odd, but nothing.
I've rooted the device, gained S-OFF, updated firmware to latest and currently running liquid smooth lollipop rom.
I just want to somehow confirm best I can it is a hardware issue. This means alas I will have to restore the phone to stock before a return however.
Any help on this is appreciated, it is driving me mad.
Bump.
I just need to try and figure this out so, if I need to, send it back if it is truly faulty.
Another bump
Someone must know about this, driving me insane.
Pressing the damn button on my damn headset will rewind the podcast by about 10 seconds or so. And yet sometimes it will work as intended. totally random.
I just need to know if it is a fault with the device or not.

Does it do it with all headsets with a mic, if so then it is hardware! If not, then it is your headset!
I've only tried 2 headsets, since that is all I own. Both do the same thing. I just wanted to clarify.

So, I've searched all over, and I can't find anyone who's had this problem, so I don't know if it's just my set up or what.
I got a set of $50 Skullcandy 50/50's for Christmas from my fiancee, and they're not fully functioning on my Hero. When I plug them in, I get the indicator that shows the headphones with microphone on the top of my screen, but the only thing that works is the sound. I can hang up and switch lines with the button on the microphone, but the volume up/down won't work, and the microphone does not push sound through. When I push the volume up/down buttons on my headset, I can hear clicking on the other end of the call though.
Now keep in mind, I've tried these earbuds on a couple different phones, and they work just as they should. They worked on an iPhone 4 and a Droid Incredible.
Is there something I'm missing, or a fix that someone has found to resolve this? I even went as far has having my phone replaced, and it does the same thing.
Thanks in advance.
Also, I'm using the stock Sprint ROM 2.32.
I have the same issue with AOSP 9.9.2 and plantronics headphones with mic. If i figure anything out ill let you know.
I have the same problem with some scosche headphones. They change the volume skip tracks, answer and hangup, and I can hear people on the other end. Problem is they cant hear me. Mic won't function. And it only happens on the hero.
As far as I can tell, the hero is just finicky and doesn't like certain headphones/mics. doesn't matter what rom or kernel you use.
I just gave up on it.
Yeah, it's kind of irritating because I spent so much money on them. I'll just wait it out until I get a new phone. I just can't figure out how it won't work on this phone, but it shows like it should. It's just blowing my mind right now.
I have 3 different pairs of skullcandy headphones 2 pair of the smokin buds and a pair of lowriders and I havent had that problem with any of them on my hero...I have an Alltel hero and I switch Roms 2-3 times a week. The only thing i can think of suggesting right now is to plug in the headset with the phone off and power it up with them still connected.
Found something that may help..but I cant post links so go to your webbrowser and type in code.google.com/p/toggleheadset/ and download the widget. Hope this helps.
I have the smokin buds to and I love them they work well with my hero

So why will the Smokin' Buds headset work, but not the 50/50's? What's the difference?
thank you!

The widget didn't help :-(
Turning off the device and turning it back on with the headphones should work. Try it out. It actually work for me.
Weird, I have never had an issue like that and I have been through every ROM you can name.
The phone rocks, but it does have some flaws. Right now I can't seem to pause and play without pressing the button on the headphones like 2 or 3 times. I tested out a few headphones that I know worked on my old Focus and my iPhone and they don't work consistently either.
I also tried the Focus S headphones on my iPhone and it works perfectly. Anyone experience this?
you know i have, i've been posting (*****ing) about this since sunday I'm suspecting a major flaw in the design of the jack itself, but we'll see. The next track/previous track doesn't seem to work at all, and the pause/play seems to take some manipulation to work
this happens to me as well, kind of really annoying, and really my only gripe with the phone.
I get a popping sound through the speakers in my car (AUX plug) when I change from track to track. I am using the same cord I used to use with my Focus and I've checked my Focus S in both of my cars that have an AUX input.
Has anyone else tried this?
Plug your phone into your car using a male-to-male 3.5 cord and play your music through it. When you change from one track to the next you'll hear a popping sound. It's much louder in my Lexus vs my Impala but it's obvious in both cars.
I am also having both the controller issue and the "popping" sound through the speakers of my car.
The volume buttons seem to work, but the play/pause button only works when I hold the button for a second or two before letting it go. Because you have to hold it for a second before it registers, you can't use it to go back or forward through songs. I tried the controller from my Venue Pro in the Focus S with the same results, so the problem is probably with the phone itself and not the controller.
Whenever I have an AUX cable plugged into my car with the engine on, I can here a loud whining noise that I assume is the cable acting as an antenna and picking up noise. When I plug in the DVP, it seems to sort of ground the cable and stop picking up noise even when music isn't playing. With the Focus S, the noise continues when the phone is plugged in and only stops when music is playing. During the short time between songs, music is not playing and there seems to be a sort of noise spike that makes a "popping" sound.
I suspect both of these problems are related and have to do with the jack as jmerrey suggests.
I have been having the same issues with both the Car playback and the controls on headsets. I really hope they fix this major flaw. This phone will go back if not.

FYI I am using a stereo Bluetooth headset from Motorola and do not see any of the above issues.
Volume up/down, pause/play and skip forward and back all work as expected.

that's because the issue stems from the actual headphone jack, it's not a software or firmware problem, but a hardware issue.
Okay I figured out how to get the controller to work pretty much 100% of the time. You can't just press the button, you have to hold it down for about half a second for it to pause and play consistently. Any more or any less than half a second and it won't work. I've been doing this for pretty much the entire day and it seems to be working now. Little annoying that it works on a delayed press but its better than not working at all.
Yes, but you still don't get the double press for next track, or triple for previous track. I've been able to get the double press to work a few times, but that's it. I've also noticed that with aftermarket sets, like a beats headset, it's incredibly inconsistent. I really hope this is fixable with a software patch, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have only volume up on all type of press button.
anyone hear if this is going to be addressed or if it has been acknowledged?
thanks
I have the same problem with my Focus S. The volume buttons are working fine, the problem occurs only with the play / pause button.
If you want to play / pause you have to hold the button longer than just the usual
short click. If you know the trick it works most of the time for play / pause, switching songs with a double click is almost impossible and very hard to time.
I tried it with the original headset from my Focus S and with the Nokia purity all have the same problems.
I also tried the all headsets with my Lumia 800 and a Omnia W all working fine.
It seems to be a Focus S only problem, not sure if it is hardware or software related.
I'm on 8107 using 2103.11.10.1 Firmware would a hard reset solve the problem??
firmware issue
I have experienced all of these problems above and here are a few tips/fixes and ideas. First with the headset controller on the ear buds, I noticed if you press harder it picks it up easier. If you get it down just right you can time it for going forward and backwards. Still not a real fix. Its definitely the phone because it works on my focus, iPhone, and mac. Also, I think it may be firmware related because the popping occurs between songs for the aux cable in the car only when audio isn't playing, so I would assume it had something to do with the firmware, not the hardware. It distinctly gets quieter when music plays, even if the music is silent (just knowing something is playing is enough for it to shut up). Also I noticed that when I plug in my phone for battery, it connects, disconnects and then reconnects. I noticed this with the vibration (should only be once, actually is 2-3 times). And when battery is low you notice because you plug in, it disconnects and you get a notice of critically low battery, and then it connects. I think this may be the firmware that all the ports seem to turn on and off whenever given any form of stimulus (data or power sent through them).

Tango and the new Samsung Firmware fixed this issue!!!
Now i can listen to my music how it is meant to be!!!
:victory::victory::victory:
i got tango, but no new firmware. Which update updated the firmware?
I got Tango, but I had to hard reset my Focus S to get the Firmwareupdate.
Maybe because I InterOP unlocked my Focus S, I'm not sure why it worked after a Hard Reset.
My Software is now:
OS: 7.10.8773.98
Firmware: 2103.12.05.2
yes but didnt the LE2 software update disable your ability to interop unlock your device?
if we can get the phone accept our own signed cabs we can extract the driver updates, fixes and patches and ignore the diagnostic tool updates that disable our interop unlock method.
in short make a backup BEFORE applying any samsung OEM updates, when you need to interop unlock again, you can revert to your pre OEM update, apply the interop unlock again, then re apply the OEM update. from what i gather you are best doing this every time you have an OS update as there have been issues with restoring backups that cross OS versions...
Oh course you lose any unbacked up txts etc, but i think the benifit outweighs the hassle.

Hi Forum,
I orginally posted this topic on the man Q and A board but it was buried quickly with no response. Perhaps this is a better venue to ask.
My phone is roughly a year old, and today I ran into a weird and potentially phone killing problem
I received a few phone calls from my girlfriend today, the ringer rang loud and clear, but I heard no sound from my ear piece. After a few "Hello?"s, I hung up thinking it was a bad connection. Upon seeing my girlfriend afterwards, she said she heard me on my end. So I got her to call me again and I tried to use speaker phone, and I could hear her fine.
Doing some research on google, I only ran across one other person who had this problem, and upon seeing this, I tested my music player, (as theirs didn't work), and mine doesn't work either
This other person said the problem resolved itself a day later.
In short, my ear piece has no sound during a phone call and my media sound doesn't work (though it works w/ headphones.) My notification sounds and speaker phone DO work, as well as my alarms
Do the notification and speaker phone speakers come from a different place than media and ear piece speakers?
Do I have a software issue? I tried the "push the speaker down" solution but to no avail
Should I wait like the other person?
Any suggestions?
Thanks forum!

I had nearly the same issue, except mine got to the point where the speaker phone didn't work either. Music played fine, phone calls stopped working. I went through a lengthy process of accidently deleting everything I had on my phone, which lead me to buy a USB Jig, install the stock ROM and it worked perfectly. I would suggest trying this before you try and physical fixes on your phone.
Thanks for the suggestion SGT_Watkins
I am an absolute noob when it comes to this stuff. So it took me a while to even figure out what you were saying
BUT, after a whole night of reading and flashing it WAS FIXED!!!
I am quite tempted to phone Samsung and give them a piece of my mind after they told me some hardware was defective even though they clearly weren't listening to what the problem was
Thank you again!
How did you solve this?
I have the EXACT same problem on my Galaxy Nexus. I've wiped it, tried different ROMs, kernels... Nothing solves it! It's like there's a persistent software problem that survives flashing and even battery pulls.
My phone had this same issue not long ago. It was after I had used some headphones for about an hour. I work in a paper converting factory, so I assume some dust was packed in the headphone jack and made the phone think something was plugged into it. I turned my phone upside down and used a paper clip to scrape it all out (compressed air may have been safer). After a few tries, all sounds were working properly again.

Hey guys, I've noticed a weird bug with stock 4.2.1 on my Nexus 4, and was wondering if anyone is experiencing the same thing. If not, then perhaps it is the hardware and not the software, but the nature of this bug has lead me to believe it is software-related.
Let me first say, right off the bat, that I have had no other issues with my phone, and that when I play games or watch movies, the volume is loud, clear, crisp--just all around excellent. However, when I use the speakerphone on a call, it seems to be... quieter than everything else. So I tried playing around with it, and discovered something interesting.
The next time you're in a call, put it on speakerphone. Note how loud it sounds to you. Then, turn the volume down one notch, and then put it back up to the max volume again (I've only experimented with it being at max already, then turning it down one notch, and then back up).
Does it sound WAY louder? And does it sound distorted, almost overblown? Why would it be like that during a call, and why would adjusting the volume down and then back up again have such a result if it was NOT software related? And, furthermore, why would it be blown out and distorted here where as for everything else it sounds superb?
Let me know your thoughts--maybe I need to RMA? I got this one at T-Mobile (I didn't have to pay the equipment installment due to my current plan, so it was cheaper to buy it @ $200 from them).
Thanks!
Same Here .. I believed it was the only with this problem since no one had said.
I think is Software Issue.
Yeah I noticed that no one had mentioned this, but I believe if it's software then it must be affecting everyone. At least, it should be affecting stock users. I guess I noticed this sooner because I use speaker phone when I'm driving in the car, since my ragtag bluetooth receiver that outputs through a tape that's plugged into it and inserted into the tape deck only transmits music and notifications, not calls--for some reason--over the car speakers. Just got sick of plugging into the phones headphone jack every time I got in and out of the car! lol

See but mine doesn't crackle or do any of that stuff during calls or anything else. And it's not blown out sounding during anything other than calls where I have lowered the volume and then put it back up to max right after. I don't think the problem is the same as it is here, it just seems similar, for sure.
Also, when not on speaker phone, the in call volume is perfect and without issue. It's limited to specifically what I mentioned in the original post.
Thanks for the reply, but I'm talking about it being overtly loud and only being so when adjusting the volume down and back up to max, and that prior to that, the volume is just a bit on the quiet side at the maximum. Not crackling/popping/etc!
cool..sorry about that.
Exact same situation with me.little buzz while on call nothing else.

No problem! Appreciate the attempted help =]
I have a rooted Verizon HTC One that I recently just got. Love the phone but one morning I discover that my volume level on literally everything is extremely low. The headphone jack will produce only a whisper of noise and when i turn the volume all the way up I can hear the music distort as if it was extremely loud but its barely even able to hear. The front speakers of the phone refuse to work with system sounds and media sounds and all the sliders are up. I've tried this on multiple ROMS, Liquid, Cyanogen, and on multiple updates, JB, KK, etc. and nothing seems to fix the issue. The speaker works I know for a fact because I can make and recieve phone calls but its a great deal quieter than before. But as for the ringer and notification sounds, or any kind of media nothing comes out of the front speakers. I'm at a complete loss. All volume+ apps don't do a damn thing in helping and I've ravaged Google looking for a solution and can't find any. It may help to know that the bottom speaker would cut out every once in a while the last week before this happened. It also stopped working on a KK ROM. if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate. I'm just about to give up.

Try to reset to 100% stock. If it doesnt work then its probably an hardware issue.
