[Q] Unable to do latest OTA update after flashing latest Rogers RUU - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently set my phone back to stock with the latest RUU I could find from Rogers. Now I am trying to perform the system updates, and when the system goes to install them, it restarts back to recovery. I have found the file in my downloads folder but I didnt want to install it without a little insight first.
Thanks guys

So i'm going to assume your device is s-off, please do correct me on that if i'm wrong Do you still have the stock recovery? or did you flash TWRP or CWM after using the RUU?
You cannot install OTA's with a custom recovery it must be the Stock Recovery :good:

Yes it s-off and yea it is twrp. Do i have to download the stock recovery from somewhere?

Well I think it will be this 4.19.631.9 as that's the latest RUU for Rogers but I can't find the Stock Recovery anywhere.
Maybe You can extract it from the RUU. Do you know how to pull the Rom.zip from the ruu .exe?

because the ruu is encrypted. If you can't find the recovery that match your version, just re-flash your ruu.

The RUU flash both the software and firmware of your phone. The recovery is part of the firmware so yes re-flashing the ruu will overwrite the custom recovery with the stock one.
Its not common to flash a ruu to restore the stock recovery but in this case it might be the easiest solution since you already have the ruu on your computer and you already know how to flash it.

don't forget to backup your personal files before, the ruu will wipe everything;

Exactly what I was thinking. Luckily I have not done anything to the phone since I flashed the RUU last week (trying to sell it). I just want to make sure it is able to receive OTA updates after I sell it so this should fix that issue.
One last question, I know it is not always wise, but I have heard people having issues turning the s-on with hboot 1.56, and that's what I would like to do so that the phone would be out of the box stock when I goto sell it. Is it possible ?

Yep looks like that's the best solution. There is no stand alone recovery download for your version-main. Just flash the RUU and take the OTA's before you flash the custom recovery again :good:

Don't I need to match my CID and MID with the RUU file? Is there an easy way to turn S-OFF?

1. CID_38 isn't a valid CID, it'll start with HTC or with the initials of your carrier so please post your proper, FULL CID, e.g HTC__001
2. There isn't an 'India' RUU - it'll be the Asian model or the EU one
3. Run the command 'fastboot getvar all' and post the results (but remove your IMEI and serial number). We can then see what you actually need

Yeah, it's actually got to be the Asian WWE, and I think it's also the same for the Singapore variant (India is supposed to be x.xx.720.x, but we have x.xx.707.x, the dual-sim variant has a x.xx.720.x)

RUU Zip M7_UL_JB_50_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.29.707.3_R_Radio_4A.14.3250.13_10.33.1150.01_release_311678_signed.zip
Google it. Now that you're s-off, you can restore an older RUU, and then you can take all the OTA's you get, all the way till 4.2.2, and 4.3 when it is released in India.

Crap, you're yet s-on. Ok, sure, now that RUU won't work.
Go to fastboot mode and flash twrp recovery from your pc
Use an otg USB cable and flash a rom from your USB drive or side load a rom with twrp.
Post back once you're done.

Ooh, my bad. I didn't look at your info correctly.. Here is the RUU you need http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ruu-zip...0-01_release_312087_signed_2_4_decrypted-zip/
What you need to do is flash this like a normal RUU after relocking your bootloader, if not locked already.

Haha!! I unlocked my phone again and it got back to the 4.2.2 version that I had on previously. I guess I had not cleared the cache and data on the phone
Next step will be to lock it and then install the RUU that you are referring to
This whole thing is new to me so I guess it is going to take a while and a few more experiments to get it right.
Thanks gain. This really helps

Thanks for your prompt reply. I forgot to mention that I have TWRP backup and aslo I have used the rooting method given on HTCONEROOT.COM.
That doesn't matter, it will get rid of all of that itself and return your phone to full stock.

Do you have a working rom on the phone, If not the OTA is useless as its just that,( an update to the rom ) and not the full rom.
You need to download the RUU for your phone.
If you do have a working rom then you need to flash the stock recovery for your rom version and relock your bootloader,( your S-On ) to install the update.

Btw, your phone firmware is currently 4.20.708.10 (from your fastboot getvar all) so you can't use a 2.24.708.4 ruu because its a downgrade and you must have s-off do downgrade.

like i said above (post 13), you can't use this ruu because its a downgrade. S-OFF is required to downgrade so any RUU below your version (4.20.708.10) will not work. So trying to flash them = wasting your time.

this is a rom and you have to install it from custom recovery, no need to relock bootloader.
adb push or sideload it to your sdcard, then install it from twrp

Unable to return my ONE to stock via RUU

Hey Guys,
I am pulling my hair out trying to return my HTC one M7 back to stock. Selling it to a friend that knows nothing about rooting and is not tech savy.
Anyways I cant seem to get the RUU to do. I have the correct file (I am with Rogers in Canada) that is the most up to date (see pictures).
I keep getting the Error 158 Image Error when I run the setup.
My phone is Locked as well which i know is the main cause for this error.
I am also running HD Revolution 84.0 at the moment.
I also set the CID to 11111111, hoping this might fix it but no luck
Any help is most appreciated.

you should be able to pull it from the ruu, when you start the ruu and it extracts itself, make sure your computer is showing hidden files and folders then goto C:\users\(your user name)\app data\ local\(lots of strange characters and numbers folder) before closing the RUU and copy the firmware to a different location on your computer.
However, also as your s-off, you are aware you can flash any RUU like the 401 (WWE) or developer edition, its all stock.

Your hboot 1.44 means the firmware has never been updated or did you put that their returning to stock ?
Maybe try an older RUU like >> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529225

Is it the Rom.zip file? When I tried to copy to the phone in windows 7 to the phone, it just gives me a "Cannot copy item" msg. The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected.
I am thinking maybe the dev edition might be the best bet because my friend might be switching to another carrier instead of Rogers

Can to simply take the firmware from the OTA? If so, do I install the .zip like any ROM? Because I am trying to do that and as soon as I hit install in TWRP, it just reboots the recovery.
And yes I did backflash the HBOOT. I believe i had to do it when I had the lastest Viperone rom installed.

Crap .. what firmware did you flash ?? and you never answered how did you get to hboot 1.44
you have to flash those OTA firmware.zip in order 3.x to 4.x to 5.x to 6.x ... you cant just jump to the newest firmware
when you plug in your phone check device manager for QHSUSB_DLOAD
Oops I forgot to finish my post. I did downflash the hboot when I downloaded the latest viperone rom (i think it asked me to if I remember correctly).
So device manager has QHUSB_DLOAD, what should i do with it?

[Q] Please help What should i do before upgrading to lollipop?

Hi guys.
I really trust xda forums and that's why I come here whenever I need help. You always save the day guys and I want to thank you for that.
So a while ago I've unlocked the boot loader, flashed cwm recovery via fast boot and rooted my device. I'm still on a stock Rom though.
Now I want to upgrade to lollipop manually, my plan is to download the official Rom from HTC's website connect my device to the pc with a usb cable then install it on my phone.. From what I understand I should flash back the stock recovery then relock the boot loader and restore the contents of a folder (i don't remember what folder though). Where can I find the stock Rom img file I should flash? (And the folder contents that i'm supposed to restore) also if I relock the boot loader will the upgrade proceed if it still shows "tampered"?
Please guys help what am I supposed to do before upgrading??

You need to restore the preload data. This gets wiped when you unlock the bootloader and it will cause the OTA to fail. Relocking isn't necessary for installing ota's you just need Stock Rom and Recovery. A GuruReset is usually the way to go.
If your talking about flashing the RUU then you will need to relock the bootloader if your s-on but that's it. Missing preload data, rooted rom's and custom recovery will not effect the RUU install. It will just flash stock over the top of it all. Your phone will be wiped though so backup any data you want to keep. :good:
If you need more help finding the correct software post the output of
Code:
fastboot getvar all
Please remove your imei and serial number before posting

I have cwm recovery on my phone, can I use it to flash the nanodroid backup? or do I have to flash twrp recovery?
and after flashing the nanodroid backup I just have to flash the stock recovery and then upgrade?

or this:

If you can find a download for just the preload data then yes that would be easier. I'll see if I can find something.
Otherwise you want the TWRP backup from that thread and you will need to flash TWRP recovery to restore it. And just to clarify you can't flash the nandroid backup like a normal Rom. You will need to unzip it and copy the folder in to your TWRP backups folder then use the restore option in twrp
The radio file is not such a big issue it will be the same radio you already have anyway.

This is the preload data from 6.09.401.12 which is the lte version of your Device. The preload data may well be the same as the only difference is that 1 device has lte enabled and the other (your Device does not) :good:

There is no data / preload folder in the backup either, are you sure you need it for this particular device ?
you can download the TWRP backup and extract it then open each individual file, like the system file with winrar, like ive done, this is the system folder from the backup, (see pict below)

no this backup doesnt appear to contain the data/preload contents, but thats why I said have you tried to update ?, is the update available to you yet ? maybe the M7_U is different to the UL and doesnt require this folder, or you could try as Danny stated earlier and use the UL ones he linked you too. :good:

I want to update manually by downloading the update file from HTC's website and then following these instructions to upgrade:
Performing the ROM Update:
1. Download and save the HTC One™ ROM update to your PC.
2. Connect your device to your PC via the supplied USB cable.
3. If the device is not recognized by the PC, ensure you have HTC Sync Manager installed and then disconnect and reconnect the device from the USB cable.
4. Once the device is properly recognized on the PC, locate the HTC One™ ROM update that you downloaded. Double-click on the file to launch the system update wizard.
5. Follow all of the system update wizard instructions shown on your PC.
6. Once the update is complete, click Finish in the Wizard and the device will reboot.
7. Once the device reboots, the initial setup wizard will appear.
8. Once the initial setup process is complete, the device is ready for use.
I found them here.

Not too sure about restoring the contents manually, I have done it myself before, but on a different HTC One SV a couple of years ago in order to update, but I did have a hell of a game doing it, even came down to creating the data and preload folders in system on my phone myself andf setting the correct premissions and then placing each file in there manually, I really wouldnt like to say if it would work for your device or not.
On a different note, which update files have you found, could you supply a link please, and I thought you had to be s-off to manually update regardless ?

no you don't need to s-off cause you'll be updating using HTC sync manager.

let's say I'm considering flashing maximushd Rom, I have flashed twrp recovery 2.8.4.0, now I just have to do a full wipe using it and then flash the Rom?

No flashing the firmware isn't required, although it's recommended, you should be ok just to flash the Rom, it's just the same as flashing a custom Rom.
As for unlocked its a different type of unlocked, confusing I know, yours is just network unlocked, that ruu / ota is dev edition, unlocked bootloader and s-off unlocked from the factory, have a look at the version number, the 3rd set of digits is what matters, that's 1540 dev, your output on page 1 states 401 international edition.

thanks for explaining that man you're amazing you saved me a lot of time.. I guess I'll download and flash mhd though I gotta ask, why is flashing the firmware recommended?
and is mhd a good Rom in your opinion?
Anyway I made a full nanodroid backup using twrp so that I can roll back if I don't like the results.. that'll work right?

Nandroid is always recommended and a good idea, I use mhd myself, they are all very much the same at the moment to be honest, the differences between them are very minimal, and matching firmware to the Rom version is always recommended to save a potential problems.
---------- Post added at 09:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:26 AM ----------
Just to add, when the official SIGNED - (that's important) 401 firmware comes out and is available you will be able to flash that, at the moment it's unsigned and will brick your phone. You'll just need to relock your boot loader first as your s-on, then flash it like any other firmware, then re-unlock your bootloader and reflash a custom recovery.

I hear you, abd I won't need to restore the preload contents that got quoted when I unlocked the boot loader?

Phone does not boot says tampered!

The Story
So a few days ago I decided I wanted to try rooting my phone despite not really knowing much about the process.
First I unlocked my bootloader, simple enough right? Even managed to change my recovery to twrp and it worked fine.
Being naive I decided to tried to root the phone by installing supersu using twrp. I placed a zip file on my phone and attempted to flash using twrp
Long be hold my phone was still booting but then I tried to update the version of supersu because it was not working. This is when the problems started.
A tampered flag appear in my bootloader which of course is because I was not S-OFF! (Did not know what that was at the time)
So now my phone appears to be bricked and I can no longer boot into the OS
After much research and trying out different solutions, nothing appears to work.
From what I have gathered the only thing I can do is to restore the stock image. That would be fine if it were possible to find!
Not sure how accurate this is but I have read that RUUs do not work if you are S-ON.
Please someone help me...Not having a phone for 2 days now is a bummer!
EDIT :adb and fastboot are installed and working. Though adb seems to only work when I am in recovery
UPDATE: So as suggested by alray I updated the supersu to newest version and my phone now boots!
Thank you to all who responded!

RUU works with s-on, you only need s-off if the ruu you want to use is a downgrade.

Whoa both supersu version are really outdated. You must use 2.46 on lollipop so boot in your recovery and flash 2.46 and if your phone still refuse to boot we will help you relfash the rom.
Sorry, forgot to say, don't post your IMEI, remove it from your above post.
Should blank out your serial and imei on the forum

Just curious why exactly is it a bad idea to post the imei and serial?
OK I will reply with the results of updating the superSU
This is actually quite weird but I have the exact same problem as you and seem to have the same MID and CID as you aswell.
I also happened to get the SuperSU 1.30 which didn't work (it kept crashing on me). I then updated it to 2.46 but then the phone stopped booting. I was just about to create a thread to ask for help but then I saw this, haha.
Edit: Would downloading a Nandroid restore from guru's stock nandroid backups work? (can't post link) I've downloaded the TWRP ROGER001 backup, extracted all the files into a folder in TWRP (which is visible to "Restore" on TWRP) but I'm not sure whether I should do it.

Edit: Whoops. Turns out this is a bad idea.

because the IMEI is a unique number identifying your phone, each phone have its own unique IMEI number. Lets say you loose your phone, you will call your carrier to declare your phone lost/stolen, they will blacklist your IMEI number so the phone can't be activated anymore on any GSM network.
Also your IMEI number could be used with other information like your sim card number / serial to clone your phone.
Its like sharing your social security number

Not sure I understand your question. What do you mean by version? My "getvar all" information is actually exactly the same as OP.
The nandroid backup that I downloaded was "M7 TWRP Nandroid Backup CID ROGER001 3.22.631.1". Hope that helps.

So you just created a mismatch between your software version and your firmware version.
Your software is now 3.22.631.1 and your firmware is 7.17.631.7, you want the firmware and software to be the same version hence why OP shouldn't do the same.
There is already a 7.17.631.7 ruu posted in the general section, use this instead and then root your phone using supersu 2.46
So if you are s-on, you will need to re-lock the bootloader first, flash the 7.17.631.7 ruu, unlock the bootloader, flash twrp and root.

The ruu is here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/general/lollipop-ruu-zip-small-collection-t3053944
relock your bootloader (only if the phone is s-on)
flash the ruu
unlock your bootloader again
flash your custom recovery
flash supersu 2.46
btw if you are using a recent twrp recovery like 2.8+ it should already have the latest supersu included so you don't need to flash supersu 2.46 manually, just enter twrp then exist, you'll prompted to root, select "yes" and the phone will reboot and be rooted.

no.
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip ruu.zip
fastboot reboot
You need to use htc_fastboot.exe which is provided in that thread and no longer need to flash twice. After doing "fastboot flash zip ruu.zip" the ruu will flash the pre-update, reboot itself in ruu mode and continue the second flash automatically.

Is there an advantage of using the htc-fastboot other than not having to hit it twice? Because then I can just use the one I have been previously that does work on Linux.
If you google "htc one root linux", the first link from htconeroot is the tutorial I was following. He had shared fastboot/adb files that work on linux and those are the ones I am using.

the normal fastboot won't work to flash 7.xx.xxx.x ruu, you must use htc's version of fastboot which is only available in .exe. the "normal" fastboot from google can't handle the file size of new 7.xx.xxx.x RUUs.
