[Q] Moto X 2014 in China - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sincere apologies if this has been asked and answered already, please pop a link to the relevant thread and I'll bother ye no longer!
So here I am in China, with my GNex bravely soldiering on and they are about to release the Moto X 2014 into China.
Trouble is, no gapps and no Google account (standard on Chinese Androids)
My question is, do you think I'll be able to root the phone using existing techniques for the US/International Moto X?
The radio fw may well be different, so I don't think I can just flash a complete ROM - all I want to do is root and install gapps (and maybe have the option to un-root for updates later down the line.....)
What do you guys think? Difficult to answer without the phone in the wild, I know. Just looking for some guidance and hopefully encouragement before putting down cash on a phone that I potentially cannot bend to my will.
Many thanks in advance for any help/advice you can impart!

Received my Moto X today. Came here looking for something helpful. I think we have to wait for a while.

Solutions found on the net. Two options:
Unlock boot loader and flash Gapps as a recovery. (Google "国行Moto X(XT1085)解锁BL刷谷歌服务教程")
Unlock boot loader and flash a root recovery. (Google "Moto x root")
(Sorry for no url. Forbidden)
I tried them a week ago and both worked for me.

A really stupid question...

Why can't those of us who have locked phones just flash the developer's edition OS? By the time I learned of the Developer's edition phone, I had already passed my 14 business days return of my phone. The long root process is a bit much for me... If there is no other way, I'll give it a try though...
I'm not exactly sure how Motorola's bootloader works, but I'm pretty sure the Developer Edition is signed with different keys and will possibly be a different size. Motorola's bootloader I'm sure checks these things and will deny it.
The bootloader is not part of the OS, it's a different thing all on its own.
It really does seem as simple as you said OP but there's been plenty of phones with locked bootloaders, if it was as simple as that, there wouldn't need to be SafeStrap and other bypasses / exploits.
If you haven't looked at JCase's new SlapMyMoto 1.0 root method, it is more simple than the previous versions. It still requires going back to 4.2.2 camera OTA and losing all your data, but some of the ADB/Fastboot steps were removed and simplified, from what I've seen.
OK after a lot of sweat, I was able to get back to 4.2.2. How do I know if I have the camera patch?

If you followed the instructions in the root guide and used the proper SBF to get back to 4.2.2, you should have the update. It links directly to the correct SBF for the root process.

Depending on the model of you phone you can flash the developer edition rom,
XT1060, Verizon Retail, Moto Maker or Developer edition can flash the same Developer Edition recovery images direct from Moto's web site.
XT1053, GSM Developer or T-Mobile USA can use the GSM Developer recovery images direct from Moto's web site.
BUT this won't impact your ability to unlock your phone's bootloader.
(If you don't believe me that the rom is the same, Do a FC /B of all files contained inside the developer edition recovery images requested from Moto's web site with those inside the roms/images downloaded from http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 and you will see other than the XML, all files are identical. And the XML just tells RSDLite what to flash. Also when you request the GSM Developer Edition recovery files, you get a file named.. TMO_RETAIL_XT1053_4.4-13.11.1Q2.X-69-3_MR2_1FF.xml.zip )
Well, after a day and half of sweating, and a few hours there where I thought I bricked it, it's rooted on 4.4. I have rooted every android phone I've ever had, and this was by far the hardest... But i'm really happy with it. Got the wifi tether going and life is good. Thanks everyone for your replies...

This was surely the most involved root I've done. I think it's partially because I got this phone much close to launch than my previous devices. They all had one click root methods available by the time I tried.

True the X hasn't been out long, and to complicate that more, 3 roms have been there for it... release, first OTA with camera fix, and Kit Kat...
Combine that with newer phones being harder to root... and yeah, one click root method isn't a reality at this point.

It has probably been rooted using an exploit. Be VERY careful or you could lose root forever.
Is the bootloader unlocked? Let me know and I may be able to help you with clear and precise steps.

If you erase..are you aware that you will loose Root permanently.?
BUT..If you use the (jcase) RockMyMoto & SlapMyMoto, you can retain Root with these two exploits, Since your device is still on Jelly Bean OS..BUT..to do so, one must be experienced with adb & RSDLite..and you can retain Root over into 4.4_

Root for this phone is not that important. Im tired that every time I want update a program or install a new one I need to delete google profile from the phone, reboot it and again use google profile. Otherwise nothing is installing.

If root isn't important to you......BY FAR, the easiest solution is to follow the instructions in the "Return to Stock" thread - in general subforum, and flash the entire 4.4.2 SBF to your phone. Everything you need is in that thread, including links to drivers, tools, and the SBF files themselves.
Just keep in mind - you'll permanently lose root/wp-off. You can still use the temp-root methods, for now...but once you update to 4.4.4 (it will be pushed out to everyone SOON), you will have ZERO chance at rooting (unless a new exploit comes along, which is extremely unlikely, OR you get your bootloader unlocked through the middleman).
Good Luck!

Moto X 2014 Pure - Still have to unlock?
I am very new to the Android world. Just came over from years of iPhone. I've searched all around but haven't found the exact answer. I purchased the Moto X 2nd Edition Pure version. I'm on ATT. I'm trying to root my phone. Is the pure version already unlocked (I thought it was) or do I still need to go through the unlocking process?

You need to unlock the bootloader. Your phone is already sim unlocked, but that's a different thing. I hope that answers your question
Also, welcome to Android . I'm curious, what made you switch?

Ok, that explains a lot and makes perfect sense. Thank you.
I decided to move to Android because of a few reasons. I was impressed at many of the features, especially the Moto X I got. I also just wanted to play with all the different toys of another platform to be honest. I still have my iPad for anything iOS I want to do, and my Moto X for my daily use stuff. I'm already fairly fully committed to Google so all my stuff is there, and the integration of the Google services into Android made everything super simple.
I'm loving the experience so far.

I am glad your experience is going well.
I am always interested to see why iOS users switch to Android. I come across and work with iOS users who always bash Android, and their reasons are unjustifiable. it's good to read some iOS users' experience with Android, like you :good:
First, thanks a lot. I was able to recover my stock recovery on XT1097 (Brazilian Pure Edition Version) with no problems at all
Second: Is there a possibility to adapt Philz or TWRP to our device??
I'm waiting too for a version of Philz Recovery

I made the switch last year too, namely so that I had a better experience with Google Glass. I love it and won't be going back. Just so you know, your service provider is AT&T, as is mine, but your Pure Edition phone take the T-Mo updates, not AT&T when they are available, so don't get confused. I rooted and totally enjoy it, although it's a little scary doing all this ADB stuff, I had to break out an old Windows computer as not much is written or explained for Mac, lol. But everyone I've encountered is really helpful.
I'm debating rooting again do it now or wait for Lollipo, I want to unlock the bootloader, but don't want to lose my personalized bootscreen in exchange for the ugly bootloader warning screen. Don't know how to save it so I can put it back, lol. Welcome to Android, enjoy the freedom.
Did anyone tried to root on XT1097? Did you guys used the Pure version ? (XT1092)

Anyone having issues with titanium backup and not having su access even though it does?

Multi-Tool Error
Hey guys, I used the multi-tool to downgrade from the first 5.0 to 4.4.4, worked fine. Now when I select option 6 to flash 5.0 OTA i get the error "device not found" did I miss something?
RUNME.BAT
Just downloaded v4.1 from the main mirror but there is no RUNME.bat. Does anybody know if there are special instructions to run the updated version?
I own an XT1097 with lollipop. I unlocked boot loader then used Moto x 2014 Tool to flash stock unroot and then I flashed radio from Brazilian firmware to get signal back. If you want I can make a tuto 4 u.

So is this confirmed, as I asked in another thread and was told the update would come from Motorola, not TMO. Given that the software on the phone is ID'd as TMO, it makes sense. I was surprised, though, given the label "Pure Edition," that the software isn't generic. But I'm guessing it only refers to the unlocked SIM and lack of carrier bloat (?).

[Q] [XT1064] Is it possible to convert XT1064 to GPE (Google Play Edition)?

Hello, can someone help me convert my Moto G 2014 XT1064 (US) to the Google Play Edition?
I bought the Moto G on sale at Amazon a few days ago, then remembered why I had put off purchasing it previously, all of the Motorola bloatware!! No Motorola, I don't need an additional backup service, and I don't want your services constantly running and pinging home, and I'd like to get updates in a reasonable amount of time. My device said it was up to date but was still on KitKat, which was very disappointing.
So far I've unlocked my bootloader (via the official Motorola method) and I did successfully upgrade to Lollipop but it was the Motorola version.
These are the packages that I have downloaded:
Blur_Version.21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US.zip (the motorola 5.0 update?)
Blur_Version.22.11.6.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US.zip (small update for motorola android 5)
GPE_XT1032_KOT49H.M004_CFC.xml.zip (stuck at Google screen with unlock icon, waited 30 minutes)
One issue is that it seems like both of the main sites that host the stock images have been down for a few days:
- http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=36 (DOWN as of 12/12)
- http://motofirmware.com/files/category/38-titan/ (DOWN as of 12/12)
I also used the MotoToolAioV3.1 with the GPE_XT1032_KOT49H ROM which resulted in a bootloop, I'm guessing this is for the 1st gen Moto G?
Right now I'm back on Motorola KitKat version 21.11.17.titan_retuaws.retuaws.en.US.
Is there a way to make my Moto G XT1064 stock GPE or should I look for a custom ROM that or should I try CyanogenMod 11?
One thing to note is that I was running on less that 50% battery when trying to flash GPE_XT1032_KOT49H with MotoToolAIO, could this have been an issue or is this only to prevent the battery from dying?
Thanks for the help guys!
P.S. It was not worth it saving $70 to get the on-sale version at Amazon rather than the Google Play Edition. I've not even been able to find out for sure if you can get the 2014 version with GPE, which makes this even more frustrating.
Also, which versions are compatible with each other or are none of them compatible unless stated? Will the 1st gen ROMs work on the 2nd gen phone?
there is no GPE edition for Moto G 2ND GEN.......... and 1st gen ROMS wont work in our phones.. flashing dem results results in a BOOTLOOP

Thanks, it's really disappointing that I can't have stock Android on a Moto G 2014 and have it somewhat easy to update. When is that going to change Google, come on, it's been the same ROM -> Bootloop -> flash -> brick -> hours of ADB and mfastboot for 5 or 6 years. Having 20 Motorola services phoning home and alerting me to signin to Motorola constantly is inexcusable, and makes this otherwise great phone a LEMON.
Is there a tool or method to strip out all of the Motorola junkware?
eeeee

Oh, sweet, thank you so much!
It probably seems like a "duh" but this tip should be a sticky!
I never once have read somewhere that the Moto G 2014 doesn't have a Google Play Edition. Eventually I suspected that it didn't but only after an hour of flashing and bootloops.
So this is not the 2014 version? https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Moto_G_Google_Play_edition_8GB?id=moto_g_8gb&hl=en Is the model number of the GPE phone I just linked to XT1032?

Man you must be dumb if you think you can flash the moto g 2013 gpe rom to the 2nd generation moto g. It's like me trying to flash a GS5 or Note 4 ROM on my GS4. It will never work and results in a softbrick or worse. Also quit being so dramatic. This motorola rom is as close to stock android as you are gonna get from an OEM. If you want to get rid of the unintrusive motorola services just root and remove the unwanted apps with titanium backup.

It's certainly not obvious at first glance that there is not a GPE version of the 2014 version of the Moto G.
What's the technical reason that I can't flash the rom on a different device? Hardware driver support? Config files?
Is it really that difficult for Android to support having multiple drivers available for different hardware? Windows does it just fine. Linux does it.
I can't seem to root the XT1064, most people seem to end up in bootloops when trying to and so did I, so no Titanium Backup at the moment.
This is as close to stock as many manufacturers offer?? That's very disappointing.

Thanks, I'll try that today.
I tried the xt1064_lollipop_boot.img version yesterday with the 2.16, 2.35, 2.38, 2.39 but I might not have waited long enough on some of them (did wait 15+ minutes with 2.16 with no luck).
What screen was it on while booting? Was it ever a completely black screen (with backlight on) for an extended period of time?
What ROM / OS version were you on when you rooted it?

Are you using the stock Lollipop recovery or TWRP?
How do you get into recovery from Lollipop? I've tried all different combinations of power/volume buttons but cannot get past the Broken Android screen.
By "flash SuperSU" does everyone mean using "adb sideload superSU.zip" from recovery?

How do you get into recovery from Lollipop? I've tried all different combinations of power/volume buttons but cannot get past the Broken Android screen.
By "flash SuperSU" does everyone mean using "adb sideload superSU.zip" from recovery?

The rom seems to replace the flashed Recovery with the stock..... I flash the recovery every time I want..... :-/
Place the SuperSU.zip(v2.38 beta worked for me). In your INTERNAL memory and boot into recovery(TWRP) flash it..

I pushed SuperSU 2.38 to /data/local/tmp/ because that's the only place that I could write to as far as I know.
I booted into recovery and installed SuperSU then rebooted (I didn't clear any cache manually).
The phone is on the Warning Bootloader Ulocked screen and rebooting. I'll let it sit for about 20 minutes and see if anything good happens. Thanks for the assistance.
Edit: is mine on the wrong screen? You said yours stayed on the "bootlogo", is that the Motorola splash screen or the "Warning Bootloader Unlocked" screen?
Edit: IT WORKED! Thank you!!
Edit: Looks like it's bootlooping after reboot.

Yeah it bootloops at every reboot..... But eventually it'll boot up..... Hope someone comesup with a more stable rooting method

I come to the conclusion...........

that not only devs given up with the g6 play, so have Motorola.
I have tried every way possible to re-lock and completely without an error, flash a stock firmware
i have had problems with boot.img recovery.img with every firmware, all saying bad key
i cannot in any way relock the bootloader.
every time saying please flash a valid android image.
I have tried every firmware image for my model xt1922-2
I have used search here, on many other sites, to no avail......
i can root quite easily, i have used guides galore, but nothing flashes correct
i am not a noob and have been flashing firmware since xdas early days...
help!

Given up? Since when did you see any one actively developing roms or anything for the G6 Play?

Then you know not to make multiple threads on the same issue? I am familiar with your issue but I don't have an answer. No one else does either it seems.

It's very obvious, even for someone who has never flashed a single phone before, not to mess with the g6 play - you're stuck with whatever you've got. Maybe in the future that will change, but I find it unlikely.
At least you have an official version of TWRP. The G6 doesn't.

Official and unofficial is not even important. For the G6+ we just got Official TWRP but if you flash anything with official twrp your device is soft bricked. However, unofficial build works great with the exception of 1 or 2 GSIs. Official was made by a dev who didn't test it(or have someone with the device since he doesn't own it) on our device and attached one of our devs name to it without him even knowing about it. For some reason Twrp team decided to approve it as official with out confirmation it even worked which is bad news imo and really disappointed me.
