UPDATE! 2012 Nexus 7 install. 2002 Jaguar X-Type
Just copy and paste this when you search for my YouTube video to see my progression! (Because I can't post links.. yet!)
(Old news) What's up XDA. Just figured i post up what i did with my aging N7 that was sitting around.
Haven't used it much now that i have my nexus 6.
My 2002 Jaguar X type lacks any cool nav unit / media player. Why buy a lame app radio when i can run full cyanogenmod 12 in my car?
I opted to install it at eye level instead of sticking it in the double DIN dash. Right now I'm using the stock stereo but will upgrade it at some point. Ill spare you the whole installation story.(unless you way to hear that).
Basically used glue and some plastic rods to build a frame on the back of the n7. Moved the 3.5 mm jack and charge port to face the back, Then attached it to the vents.. Not the most stock look, but i think it turned out good. What do you think?
I just throw my N6 into a hot spot and then im good to go.
Nice installation.

I decided a while ago to use my Nexus 7 as my head unit in my 2006 Legacy 3.0R. This is the result.
Audio is done via a Kenwood FM modulator, and bluetooth streaming to the pre-existing Parrot system as a backup.
In the near future I'm going to mount a 3G-wifi hotspot and Seagate Satellite wifi hard drive in the glove box for internet and media streaming.
Video and better pics coming later tonight

I really wanted to use the nexus 7 with my car install. But limited storage, and no usb otg/charge at same time. If that was possible it would be in my dash now.
Im going to use a galaxy tab 2 since it can take a 64gb sd. Really wish there was a solution.
But nice, clean install. Im adding mine to my Dodge Magnum.

Segate Goflex Satellite or the Kingston Wi-Drive will solve my storage issues. For now 16GB is enough for just music.
Id like to hear about your experience with that Seagate satellite. It would be nifty to stream that to tablet via wifi and tablet to Kenwood cd player via bluetooth. Talk about ultimate right there, mhm...

Ive also used my Nexus as my media player in my Toyota 86 (FR-S), im using a JVC KD-X50BT which has bluetooth and its just media player so no CD drive which is behind the tablet and it has two USB plus. I use one USB for external USB drives and the other one is for the bluetooth which my cellphone is paired it so i can receive calls while driving. The tablet is plugged into the AUX port for the sound, but the tablet is powered by a mini USB charger 2.1amp in my extra cigarette plug. Im using my cell as a hot spot so that i can stream pandora, netflix, google maps..etc through the tablet. also to contol the volume of my radio thats tucked in the back i used an IR repeater for my remote which i can also change from AUX to USB. Here is what it looks like in the car..
The IR repeater
Damn those are some clean installs.
Good job guys.

It's not really an issue. The tablet turns on and stays on when it connects to power (when the car turns on), then it turns off after a 30 sec timeout once I turn the car off.
As for volume, I usually just leave it on max but there are plenty of widgets on Google Play that can be used to control the volume.
Unfortunately I do need to clip the panel out to turn it off and on, but I don't anticipate needing to to that too often.

No problem of the heat, i actually used a mini IR thermometer to check the heat coming from the radio.

I love the car, i had to place my name on a waiting list that was for 3 months but lucky me when i called a dealership 40mins away and left my name with them he called me back two days later saying one was coming in and it was the color and tranny i wanted so i lucked out. but a few guys on my forum are already selling their cars cus some are having back issues being too tall or some other excuse
Do you have more pic of your instal ? Inside ?
I want to do this in my Toyota Prius Gen III so badly! I just have NO IDEA where to start. I'm excellent with computers, tablets, and phones, but I know nothing about car audio/fabrication etc.
Therefore, I ordered a Monoprice bluetooth receiver and a Nexus 7 Vent mount off eBay for $15. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221123164714?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 This will work in the mean time but I REALLY WANT TO FAB a custom front panel and get rid of that weird looking slim slot thingy. (i think they call it a cd drive or something)

All good, carry on
Yes I know its mean for the Kindle Fire but it works with almost any device.
Kinda Wish I didn't buy the Nexus 7 official dock as this is more useful IMO.
The dock clock stand has two stand top plate things. One meant for use with the kindle fire and one thats meant for universal use.
Under the top plate is a 3.5mm headphone jack and a usb port for charging. Looks great with my s3 or nexus 7.... a little small for the nexus 10 but totally works.
But I use it for a bluetooth speaker setup.
You have to buy 2 extra parts to get it to work for bluetooth
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bluetooth-M...t=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item23239c83e7
is a apple bluetooth adapter for the 30 pin. Bought a couple for all the docks and such that go on clearance or sale due to the new lightning port to make a cheap bluetooth speaker sets for android devices.
and an apple charge and audio cable
http://www.ebay.com/itm/iPod-Dock-t...er_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item2c624d6591
Since the speaker dock has a usb port and a 3.5mm jack, you can use the cable and have it as a bluetooth speaker.
so for 25 bucks you can have a nice little bluetooth speaker set. But also you can use the cable and bluetooth adapter for your car, audio receiver. Just unplug and put it on any device you want to use it for. Lots of flexabilty.
The dock itself it quite nice, good build quality, pretty good sound for the size, overal a steal for 10 bucks if you can get one at staples. Staples might show a price tag of 59.99, but should ring up 9.90.
950986 is the item/sku number
http://checkinventory.home.comcast.net/~checkinventory/
use the inventory checker to see if your local staples has it in stock
yes it will hold a nexus 10 but looks kinda funny
I found one at my local Staples, had to ask for help in finding it since it was way up at the top of the shelving units. Thanks for posting!

I grabbed one yesterday too (last one in the store) and I have a Kindle Fire so I tested it out while waiting for my other items.
It sounds pretty good for the size and has a decent build quality.
I went with OPs idea for a bluetooth speaker but used Amazon, not ebay (I have Prime and like getting stuff quickly).
Thanks! Got the last one, or so I thought. The guy who looked up the price was surprised and snatched up the last one. The dock assembly comes apart easily, letting you use any other device.

I would recommend calling ahead and reserving one over the phone.
Hey y'all
The Nexus 7 is a great gaming device, you all probably know that already.
But what I'm looking for, is a gamepad that basically wraps around the device.
I'm sure it's possible as it could be connected to the Micro USB port on one side, yet I haven't seen one for the Nexus 7.
It would make the Nexus 7 look a lot like the Archos Gamepad:
http://i.neoseeker.com/n/6/archos_gamepad_thumb.jpg
Or the WiiU controller. Having dual analog sticks on the sides.
Do any of you know about one? Have I perhaps missed one?
I can't be the only one wondering about this!
My first thought:
Whow! How cool is that!!!
Second: you bought a state of the art device with a super modern touchscreen! How could you use this one? Go with Nintendo
Anyway back to topic, never seen something like that!

How cool would it be to have the Nexus 7 and this gamepad with you all the time, and whenever you feel like it you could snap it on and play away?!
Answer: very cool.
And that's why I'm looking for one. I need the whole to be one piece. I don't want a separate gamepad where I have to put my Nexus 7 on the table or anything. And I also want dual analog sticks :3
a side clip on gamepad would be awesome. Something like the razer tablet
Passed my old N7 along and using the new 32Gig model 2 now.
I've read about a GPS issue but I don't seem to have the problem. I rooted my last one but never really took advantage of that so I'll probably use this one stock for awhile. I did notice that the new one has no "docking port" or whatever the heck that contact point was supposed to be. .... So what happened to the docking port? The absence in the new model says "orphan" to me.
So far, very nice and very smooth, great screen and no apparent quality or fit problems. The second camera is a nice addition.
And Amazon just informed me that the Chromecast unit I ordered last month will be delivered sometime in September or October.
The Old School Dock
The Dock connections on the old school Nexus 7 were for charging capabilities and for audio out i believe. I read a few reviews and that about the dock and i thought it would be great to have one...... however everywhere i looked since the N7 came out they were all out of stock.
And not work the $50 they were asking. So oh well!
They must of deemed the Dock Capability not needed after that and kept it out of the 2013 model. :-/
Because they have the wireless charging coil in the new n7
Beamed from my Grouper
I love the docking capabilities of the old Nexus 7. I have speakers connected to my docks and use it as a small media player at various points around the house.

hey looking at putting an android based car stereo in my new yaris
it can fit a 2 din radio and has steering wheel controls and a remote usb port / aux
i've been looking at the parrot asteroid as that can be rooted and tinkered with and doesnt require the always on usb connection (not to mention the rear-view camera connections are nice)
would like recommendations on brands, models, etc.
my preferred criteria are usb and aux connections and bluetooth hand free for phone calls.
some kind of removable storage would be a plus but not essential.
built in phone independent nav is highly prefered (borderline must-have)

well the fact that that one is not actually android just has android auto functionality (so it has to be plugged in via usb to work) and can NOT be updated by the end user is a major turn off
i have been looking at Parrot's Asteroid Smart which is full android just reskinned and can be rooted for sideloading various apps like google maps; though i dont know where development is currently at for it's stock OS (but if i can root it that's less of an issue as i can just redo it for the most part myself)
i just installed an XTRONS TD702A in my truck and have been very happy with it. its compatible with malaysk rom and flashing was as easy as running a system update on a sd card. the price was cheap and it shipped in a couple of days.

The way Pumpkin has implemented Parrot BT it's as bad as the older units. The main screen is hard coded, you can't change any icons or
the way it look. No improvement the way I see it.

ya im a little warry on that one, as from the pics it looks like they cannibalized the entire frame from another companies DOA smart radio and just tried to fit their guts into it ( second picture bottom right; holes dont line up and the mounting screw hole for the radio connector is not even in because of the mis-alignment)
cost is less of an issue than making sure it works and i can do what i need to with it; for reference the parrot asteroid retails (depending on form where) from $429 to $729 depending on if its a refurb or used model
if thats the only option for my needs i can more than deal with that price in exchange for less headaches and/or more customization
also side-note: isn't it grand how xda DOESN'T auto subscribe you to threads that you create? didn't even know anyone else replied after the 8100nex recommendation till i remembered i made it and came to look....
to be honest i was a little curious about their mounting brackets but it didn't matter in my truck. i had to do such a custom fit job there was no need for mounting.

ya i'm not talking about the mounting bracket; i mean the mounting hole that secures the actual jack for the radio antenna itself if you look on the picture of the back you can see the jack's mounting hole that's meant to be secured to the inside of the radios shell....
anyway
anyone else have any suggestions?
i see what you mean. the hole on top is unused and the one for the radio worked fine.
ok so just had the time to go and actually measure the radio bay size and it is in fact not a 2 din but a 1.5 din bay
i'm guessing this severely limits my options?
edit: ok scratch that the moulding was just covering up the outer edge of the bay it is a 2 din looks like
so nvm
