It can't be unlocked, per se, but it could probably be flashed to Sprint as Republic uses its network. But I don't think you could unlock the device to use on AT&T or T-Mobile.

Root and carrier unlock are different things. Carrier unlock requires a code from your provider.

Would he need to do a carrier unlock even in the case he installs a new ROM on to it? (even the ODIN One-Click stock ROM?)
Sorry, just curious myself!
What he describes is the fact that in 2.1 ROM, carrier unlock code is very easy to extract from the phone (it is not encrypted). But once you flash to any 2.2 ROMs, the unlock code is now encrypted and much difficult to extract but still doable.
Flash back to 2.1 will not give you back the encrypted unlock code. So, it is important that get get the unlock code while still in 2.1 and write it down somewhere.
There are instuctions posted in dev forum about how to extract the encrypted unlock code in 2.2.
Regardless which ROM you are on, your unlock code stays the same unless you flash to a custom ROM that is not properly ported to Captivate and it will likely destroy your IMEI, product code and unlock code.

Ah I see! So much like the CM7 ROM then
So I'm guessing my phone was already unlocked somehow beforehand...
Call ATT, make up some BS about going to Europe on a trip. Tell them you already bought a prepaid sim card for an international carrier and you need the sim unlock code for your phone.

Custom ROM has nothing to do with unlock status.
Exactly, that's what I'm meaning
I've never unlocked my phone, yet it's unlocked.

How do you know it's unlocked? Are you using it on a different carrier than when you first purchased it? Are you using prepaid SIMs in it? That's what carrier unlocking allows. Rooting allows access to the base OS so you can run certain apps and make mods that involve the system. You can be rooted and locked or unlocked and you can be locked or unlocked and not rooted. One has nothing to do with the other.
I never said they had anything to do with each other, I'm much aware of how they both work. I'm both rooted and unlocked (not bound to any carrier, and yes I use prepaid SIMs).

if your phone has root access simply download galaxy s unlock from the market by helroz and run it. it's pretty simple. to know if you have successfully unlock your phone just dial *#7465625# it should should show network lock off. and you"re good to go any carrier sim you want that supports your phone baseband. if you're not at&t way to go....
Hi guys...
Does someone have a s3 mini GT-18190N, and it success to root or unlock?
Better to say, i need to unlock my phone, how to do it?
On the other way, If there is not a free way to unlock phone, IF then I root and put some custom rom on my phone will it be unlocked by default?
And the final question, does custom roms (on this site) also working for my gt-18190N version or just for GT-18190 ???
Thanks,
nice regards

hi
i suppose u are talking about Sim Unlock? right?
and not bootloader unlock,
normally just unlock means to unloack bootloader to be able to flash custom recowery, thatway you can also root and install custom roms....
sim unlock on the other hands, you can do it also without root etc... but you need code from your operator, or u have to purchase one online cca 20$
and i have no idea if there is other way, or if anybodes did it...
So I have a MOTO X 2013 from Republic Wireless (XT1049) and I'm moving back to Europe (Portugal). I was wondering if there was any way to change my SIM card and be able to simply do calls. I don't care if I lose the RW functionalities of wifi calling and all that.
Unfortunately I'm in version 4.4.4 and from what I have checked I can't really change my ROM anymore (though that would solve my problem). Also the SIM-unlocker I found (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-success-sim-unlock-sprint-xt1056-t2825155) doesn't seem to be for my phone version and... I have no idea what GSM is haha.
I have searched a lot but I can't seem to find a clear solution..
I'm completely new to all this things so if you have any solution I would appreciate if you could explain it really well

Without unlocking the bootloader, you can't do anything but use that phone on Republic Wireless. Sell it and then buy a phone that will work to where you are moving.

And there's no way to unlock the bootloader in version 4.4 right? Crap. I can't really sell it since I'm already in Portugal also haha. O well, now I have a expensive mp3 player. Thanks!

4.4 or 4.4.4? There is no way to unlock the bootloader on 4.4.4.
Even if you could bootloader unlock it, it needs to be SIM unlocked too. But then the issues is the hardware - does it have GSM radios in it? Idk, you would have to look into that.

the sim unlock instructions by @samwathegreat here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-success-sim-unlock-sprint-xt1056-t2825155 require you to flash the Sprint rom, which you can't do unless you are bootloader unlocked.
Since moto doesn't give out the bootloader unlock code for Republic Wireless, and the China seller/Middleman is/are long gone, Sunshine is your only option.
If you have 4.4.2 or LOWER, and have never upgraded it to 4.4.4, then you can use Sunshine to unlock the bootloader, and follow that thread to SIM Unlock (aka carrier unlock). That would enable GSM and you could use it with carriers in Europe.
BUT if you already upgraded it to 4.4.4, then you are stuck as far as I know. And no, you can't completely and safely downgrade to 4.4.2 or lower, and even if you try, the parts Sunshine works with wont be downgraded anyway. (i.e. Sunshine wont work even if you attempt to downgrade to 4.4.2)

Yes, the Republic Wireless XT1049 does have GSM radios, but they are SIM Locked (aka Carrier Locked). The only way to SIM Unlock them is to have an unlocked bootloader so you can flash the Sprint XT1056 SBF, and follow the instructions in that other thread.
So the folks on this forum are my last hope before I give up. I bought an XT1049 on ebay (I know, mistake!) because I wanted to try Republic Wireless, and the phone has KitKat running on it - far superior to Lollipop on the Moto X in my opinion. I got the phone - great condition, and KitKat was everything I remembered (silky smooth, much longer battery time) vs. the laggy dog of Lollipop I have on my old Moto X. This should be great, right? Wrong. Turns out it's not a RW phone. Says XT1049 on the back, when I plug it into my laptop it says XT1049, but after emails with RW support and community, this is not an RW phone. The ROM is different and they don't recognize the IMEI. Sigh....
Take it to AT&T store and a Metro PCS store to see if I can get it to work on either of their networks. Guy at Metro PCS pops in a sim card, changes out Access Point Names, then tells me the phone is "network locked", and he can't do anything for me. He said it's possible to unlock it, but I'd have to know what network it was locked by. Well, it's not RW, but I don't know who or what to do at this point.
The System Version is 161.44.38.ghost_row.ACGLTE.en.US, which I've found is "ACG Regional Carriers" - which seems like bad news to me. I don't think that network - or collection of networks - would work for me in any reasonable way.
So my question - is there any way I can get this phone unlocked to work on a legit GSM network like AT&T, or preferably T-mobile? Or am I just chasing my tail and need to take this as a lesson learned? The phone works remarkably well, so I don't want to brick it. I can use it as a secondary phone at home - just with no data/calls. But I would love to find a way to use this if I can figure a way to unlock this.
Thanks in advance for your help! (I realized this should be posted in the Q&A section, but can't seem to find a way to delete this or move to Q&A.)

Thanks, Shabby! I finally got time to do this. Yes, my bootloader can be unlocked. I'm a total noob to this though, so really don't know what to do next. I haven't unlocked yet, just got the email from Motorola with my Unlock code.
Any guidance you can provide for unlocking GSM would be greatly appreciated!

yes sir it's
It is unlockable follow the unlocking instructions from the Motorola page and you will receive the unlock code almost immediately I already unlock mine without any problem. greetings: 3
I just ordered an unlocked Z3 Play from Motorola with their $150 sale. What are the benefits to unlocking the bootloader, does inserting a Sprint SIM lock it? Is this necessary to edit APN's and allow tether bypass?

The no data while on call is a limitation of CDMA.
