I've had a GT-I9000 SGS for about 4 months now. In terms of software and speed I'm happy after rooting and applying a lag fix.
The annoyance now is that the metal frame around the phone feels loose. So that always as I hold the phone to press the up or down volume or the on/off button, it always squeaks. Does your phone have the same problem? I've considered sending it back but I wanna know if mine is the rule or an exception.

No problem here. But are you sure its metal? Mine feels like plastic and as my phone hit the table and then the ground it scratched on it like on plastic.
Mine battery is loose though, fixed it with a piece of plastic too

Same here, but it was the battery cover at its border where it touches the phones frame.
Try it without the battery cover. Still the same?
yep i have this problem, its abit spongy wen you push it.
Well, trying without the back cover does make a difference. Not 100% perfect but much better. In the end I've just discovered the reason. Hmmmm. Maybe I'll just get an extra cover.

Why on Earth would you want a camera timer? It's not like you can put the phone on a tripod or even just stand it on a wall or anything....it would be completely pointless.
I wouldn't mind having this also.

OK name one thing that you are likely to have with you that you can prop the phone up with at the right distance and angle that lets you line up the shot and will hold the phone steady enough.
Because if there is such a thing, I'll add my +1.
Even though I think this is a stoopid suggestion, I have no doubt that once Mango hits and the camera API is opened up, some numpty will create an app to do a timer function. And other numpties will pay for it.
Or it can be added by HTC like it was on thier old devices (Kaiser/Tilt, at least).
Would like this too. Also need a touch shutter button to go along with the HW button!

I would like it because the button is recessed with the case I have and often the extra effort required to press the button causes blurry pictures. Would actually rather touch the screen to snap the pic... Is there an app for that? Lol

agree the recessed button is terrible..it is actually the worst I have ever used on any Phone with a camera..
Along with a shutter timer I hope developers also include on screen shutter "button" like on the HD2 (since there is no way to "fix" the recessed button)
Seriously? Why wouldn't you want a camera timer????????? Who needs a tripod anyway?? Have you no imagination? Just sit the phone up against something hit the timer button and there u go......I do this all the time with my epic and the pictures come out fine. There might be some places you cant do this but for the most part you can. You got to remember though these camera phones arent used for professional quality. Just a in case camera. So rather than sending back my Nexus 7, I decided to give something a try. I removed the back casing, which is very easy to do. I used a small flat screwdriver where the "leather" meets the plastic and gently wedged it in. The case popped right open and was easily removed. I then tightened all of the small phillips screws around the outside of the board on the back of the screen.
This immediately cleared up the creakiness and play that i was experiencing on the left side of the screen. I tightened all screws and not just the ones on the left side. Do this at your own risk, obviously, but this immediately rectified my issue!
7/22 update:
So on Friday, I noticed a slight creak returned. I removed the black strip of foam that has been discussed in this thread. Since Friday, with heavy use, no creak, no play, no screen rise I'll update again later in the week to confirm it hasn't returned.
8/02 update:
Since removing the sponge, the play in the screen and the creaks have not returned. I see others havent had as much luck with it but, for me, I can say it did the trick.
Update 1: People are reporting that after a few hours the issue came back. It does appear to be something else causing this. If your issue persists, Call Your Store!
Update 2: Included another guide in this post to try, thank you Luxferro & Evo_Shift
Update 3: Most of us Play Store people are closing in on 15 day replacement time. It's quick & painless, and you still get to use your tablet while the other one is being shipped. Call them, RMA it, get it taken care of.
Update 4: Added Washer Fix Guide. Received my new replacement from the google store. Worse than my older one. Uploaded a video below. Google told me to google the fix for it and try it.

Using the thin plastic from a pill blister (allergy pills were right in front of me when I was doing this) I created a washer to space out the frame & screen.
Just cut a rectangle out and punch a hole at the end for the screw to go thru. I just used a sewing needle on a sewing machine, like a drill press, to make a starter hole and my smallest screwdriver to widen it. With the screwdriver still in the hole, I just ran my knife around it to trim off the excess plastic.
WHY A LONG RECTANGLE? so you can insert it and hold it in place while you work. don't want it accidentally falling into the device.
now just slide that UNDER the top frame and screw it back together. MAKE SURE YOU STOP ONCE IT'S SNUG. the screen should now be lower than the side bezel.
Do this to all the spots that are lifting. I just did mines on the lower left and upper right, since they both had slight lift.
After you're done screwing it all down, trim off the excess so you can put the back cover back on, not flush to the frame, just enough so you can hold it if you need to remove it.
Did this last night and this afternoon, still no returning lift.
edit: depending on how much lift you have, you might have to use 2 or more to fill the gap (or use something thicker like used gift cards)

Guide Two - Simple Tighten by cwc3/jam10238

1) Grab something that isn't going to mar your nice silver plastic. People have been using guitar picks & even their fingernails
2) Stick that non-marring object between like seen here: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/CAKD1lCgchEPlBI2.medium (they have a white cover while we have a black one)
3) Start sliding that object between the two, you will notice them starting to pop up. Try not to pry if you can, I had to a little.

5) Tighten all the screws around the outside (Pretty much eye glasses size), on the black plastic and metal. Not too tight, or you might cause back-light bleed &/or strip the screw. In my case most were a little loose.
6) When putting the case back on, be sure your not just starting flat. Start at a angle, for example, with the right side portrait. Push/Pop it back on going around the tablet.

1) Loosen all the screws around the outside w/ the panel on a flat hard surface (hard cover book)
2) Let the panel re-seat itself a bit
3) Just barely tighten all the screws.
4) Then repeat the tightening once they are all done to snug them up (not too much!). It should make your screen look perfect.
4a) After a bit of use you might need to snug them up once more - if the glass starts popping up again.
I tried this method of losening the screws after just tightening them failed me. And so far over 12 hours later my device still is good

Brave indeed! Tempted to do this since I have the same problem but 1) don't wanna wait 1h on hold trying to get an RMA and 2) who knows when I'd be getting a new one.
In case I try this, and it ends up not fixing the issue and I decide to send it back later, do you think Google would be able to tell that device has been opened and potentially refuse the exchange?

I dont think so, there is absolutely ZERO warranty tape or anything that is standard on electronics these days. Its literally like a big battery cover. I can post a video shortly of the process.

You only need to do step 4 in this guide and thats it. If you look at the image for step 5 or 6 youll see one of the screws i tightened in the lower right corner of the picture.

I'm going to bookmark this for now, but not worry about it as it stands.
I finally noticed just a thumbs size spot in the upper left that i could sometimes hear a LITTLE give, but that was in my quiet bedroom.
Otherwise it didn't feel like it was really having any give or separation.
So for now, I don't think I'll tempt fate, everything else seemed good in my build quality based on what some folks are reporting. Lightbleed I know from my old G2x, and got none, no discoloration or dead pixels that I could see. So given my luck I would tighten up this little almost not noticeable issue, and ... cause 2 more things to start acting up for no discernible reason at all.

Honestly, the teardown guide has better pictures than i could ever take. Once you pop the cover off, just gently give all exposed phillips screws around the outside a turn until tight. Dont force anything. Go the entire way around the outside then just pop the cover back on and power it back up.

Here it is! Just got my Nexus 7 but a really bad surprise waited me. As soon as I opened the box, I experienced the "screen separation" issue that a lot of people had. I tried to look on the web for a real permanent fix as Google's supply are not able to bet me an exchange/RMA that would not require to open the back of the device. I had tried to get the screws tighten without success, I also tried to put spacers in between the screws without success also.. :crying:
I read a lot about fixing this issue; one was explaining how to make the CPU/GPU running and generating heat to get the glue to hold the screen and case together. So I was sitting there watching my battery temp going up to 32-35C/90-95F as my meal was in the oven at 190C/375F. Then I got this great idea. I stopped the stress test, put the tablet in power off state and placed it face down on TOP of the hot spot of the oven; in between the two front elements. I put weigh on top of it and waited about 30-40 min. After that period, I started "Stability Test" available on the Play Store to get the battery temp that was around 47C/115F. I stopped the oven and let it sit for the night face down with weigh on top of it to cool it off. Next morning, surprise! The screen was finally glued. I had no screen seperation since then. It's now being my 5th day without any problem.
Conclusion : FIXED !! :laugh:
Let me know if that worked for you as well !
A heat gun would probably be easier and safer, glad it worked though.

Interesting idea, hadn't heard that one before. Of course, different stoves will have different hot spots from the oven, so YMMV. How much weight did you put on top of it? Also, do you happen to have a way of measuring how hot the spot gets?
I'd be interested to see if this is a truly permanent solution or if the adhesive starts to break down again after a few weeks or months.

I placed my hand over and touched it.. If the "hot spot" was couple of degres higher, I wouldn't be able to let my hand sit there.. I was at the limit.. For the weight, I used casino's pot full of change.. 2x 8 pounds..

Good to know. Different people seem to have different thresholds for heat (for instance, I remember as a kid I couldn't keep my hands under the same water my mom used to wash dishes), but the spot on my stove doesn't seem to run as hot as you described, so I'd be willing to try it if I run into this issue on my replacement.
All in all, though, I like this idea a lot. There's always a risk, but I'm sure the devices are stress tested with the CPU running at temps hotter than you could reproduce using this method (short of actually putting it inside the oven). As long as you can hold your hand on the spot without it getting too unbearable, I would think it's pretty safe to try.

I'm interested in this too. What about a very tiny amount of super glue on top of the old adhesive?
regarding heat-guns .... do you think a hairdryer would get hot enough/ too hot etc? I'm keen to try this but dont want to mess it up.

shocking discovery- missing screws in nexus 7
Long story short:
1st device from best buy : scar like dead pixels, exchanged for second
2nd device from best buy: loose screen/ seperation
Got 3rd device from staples hoping it is better, noticed screen noticeably yellower, minimal seperation problem.
At my last resort, opened up the 2nd and 3rd device, found 3 screws missing from the right side when faced down(or left when screen is up). While the 3rd device is missing one,
. I am so shocked this is happening....no wonder my screen is so loose.
I m a first timer with android device. Own an iphone . Gotta say jelly bean and even the nexus 7 itself is spectacular. But what is with Asus? Have google picked the wrong partner. Or is it is pure poor quality control. Unbelievable.

Okay, so just to make sure what you people do:
1. Heat up the oven
2. Find the hotspot
3. Switch oven off, wait until hot to touch (that'd be a bit over 60C)
4. Switch unit off
5. Put the unit on the hot spot with about 16 pounds (8 kilos) of pressure on top (really?)
6. Wait until it has cooled down naturally
Am I missing anything? How has the fix held for you so far after a month or more?

Did not work for me.
I heated the device to 80C with a hairdryer, then pressed it with clamps (force equal to about 9kg) for about 7 hours.
Separation came back about 1 hour after I released the clamps without turning the device on.
Too bad, as I have no way to exchange it.
I guess I'll just use the case.
5 minute epoxy (or any glue one's comfortable with) is the way to go. The problem is obvious once the bevel is removed - the glue on the left side on my device had cured without holding the glass. Hard to believe heating and pressing would work at all.

I fumble and fumble, then think I must have the phone upside down and fumble some more only to realize I've now turned it up side down.
I thought I'd get used to it.
Not to mention I seem to be getting bits of pocket crap in between the button and the phone.
On my HTC EVO LTE the phone used to come on if I stooped down (I keep it in my fron jeans pocket) and I made little guards for the button to stop it.
Now think I'll have to glue on a bump on to the button or something.
It would be nice if they put a dimple or raised it slightly. So you could positively find it by feel every time.
My case has a cut out for the powet button and I have pretty wide fingers, so no issues here

I have same problem as OP. I have an Incipio case that has a cut out for the power/IR blaster. It also has a cut out on the bottom for the micro usb charger, which is almost the same exact size. I too have flipped the phone over several times. I may have to get the Mophie just for the simple fact that it has a raised power button.

Not sure if I understand right but you could do what I do and stop using the power button. What I do is rooted with bulletproof kernel I use the double tap the bottom of the screen to turn it on and then I can either swipe the back+home button to turn the phone off or use a widget called screen off on my desktop (usually do this since its more convenient). This works perfectly and is much easier than the akward power button

I have the flip cover, and I use Tasker to lock and unlock the phone when I open/close it. It uses the proximity sensor, and is almost instantaneous in response. Even works with the cover off, by either sticking it in my pocket or placing the phone face down on a surface.
I saw something like that where you can wave your hand over your phone air gesture style to unlock it out answer a call. Crazy the things you can do with Tasker.

Why dont you just install a custom kernel and then use the sweep/wake option? Thats what I do on my device and I dont even touch the power button. Just a thought and hope it helps.

Freaking... Love... Tasker.
I bought it before it
was released on the marketplace and don't think I could live without it. It's hefty price tag saves you so much by figuring out how to do all the cool little tricks that all these 99 cent apps do.

What I do is rooted with bulletproof kernel I use the double tap the bottom of the screen to turn it on and then I can either swipe the back+home button to turn the phone off or use a widget called screen off on my desktop (usually do this since its more convenient). This works perfectly and is much easier than the akward power button

A good design everyone WILL naturally get used to. A poor design won't.
If my car pulls to the left and I can't get used to it, does that make it my fault !!! That's what your saying.
Looks like I'm not the only one having issue with it, so it is a the "Phones Fault".
Like I said a tiny dimple on the power button or similar so you can find it with frozen fingers in the dark. Would go a long way.
Small cues that help you have the phone oriented correctly would go a long way.
Weight, Texture, Dimples make the difference.

IF your car was designed to pull to the left it wouldnt be the cars fault.
The recessed power button is a design, no fault of the phone itself.
I, and I'm sure countless others here have no issues with the power button.

I, for one, love the power button. Never once thought the button was hard to find or hard to press. I also love the tactile feel of this power button after having used a GNex, which I hated the power button placement - too easy to press accidentally.
