Facebook Messenger battery drain - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been having battery drain for a while I do recall not having that bad battery use when I first got the phone one app that I did recently install was Facebook messenger. I did notice before I did remove it today that it was my biggest battery drainer at the top of the list. My battery drained just by playing music to 80sh percent after one hour or less. After I removed it I'm getting low to mid 90℅ during the same time. Big difference. Just trying to help those who are having bad battery life with the phone.

I uninstalled all of the facebook apps. I get 6 hours sot without them, about 20 percent more.

i removed facebook from all my devices 4 years ago, as facebook was draining my battery about 20%, and i wasnt even ever using it. now i use facebook in the browser only, and couldnt be happier.

I have noticed this in the last few days as well! So did my other friend with a Nexus 6. Weird. I am uninstalling until a fix comes out.

6 hours? What carrier you on and are you rooted or running stock? Just curious what launcher you use, too.

i didn't know if you had a different kernel going on, I read that Franco kernel has been doing great for some.
HOw do you have your CPU set up, if that's what matters? I can't do anything about my network quality. Thanks for any input.

Yeah, messenger and facebook apps drain battery a lot and also eat RAM much. If you still want to use them, just greenify them Saves RAM and battery and no background process

Facebook Messenger is known to use a lot of battery life. I prefer using the mobile webpage via Chrome, it's much better than the app itself.

After a few days without messenger its been a big difference in battery life. I do have CleanRom as well on T-Mobile. Just removed it on my nexus 7 today. Same ROM.

Thanks for the input. This goes to everyone as well. I uninstalled the messenger app and am thinking about uninstalling the main facebook app just to see what happens.
Question, what root method did you guys use?
The wugfresh one click? I read that it was mostly stable, but sometimes you had to re run it. I am using a Mac.

Always do it the manual way and not a toolkit. Toolkits are great to having the job done but you don't learn anything while doing so. The manual way is super easy as well, even easier than a toolkit.
Especially on a Mac since you won't have to download drivers. There's a stickied post in n6 general with a step by step guide.

Nice. I will check that out. Manual as in topping each adb command? I'm there. I did that for my nexus 7.

This sticky, right? So the chainfire rooting process is still a script, though, right?

I noticed the battery drain issue with Messenger, as well. My battery dropped to below 70% in about 4 hours and noticed Messenger was the biggest drain. I hadn't even been using Messenger. Uninstalled the app and battery was back to normal.

Battery DRAIN not battery usage
Hey guys. I'm not 100% sure, but I think this thread is about Facebook Messenger really DRAINING the battery, not just the app's (intended) high battery consumption. I've had these issues as well over the past couple of days. My battery would run out within a matter of 8-9 hours, where I usually get 30 hours+ out of my OnePlus One - and that was even though I was barely using Messenger.
I attached 2 screenshots showing the issue.
As a temporary fix I had uninstalled Messenger and that seemed to do the trick. My phone had used up only 20% battery within 8 hours ago (compared to 100% before).
There was a thead on reddit about this as well (here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/2vrcuj/facebook_messenger_causing_massive_battery_drain/)
One of the replies was:
UPDATE: WE RESOLVED THE ISSUE. Details: We identified a syncing issue on Android that was affecting people’s battery life. We have fixed the issue and Messenger should be back to normal. The issue was solved on our backend so no need to update the app. Thank you all for submitting reports. Reinstall Messenger here.
Hi Reddit I'm an engineer on Messenger for Android. We're tracking the battery drain issue and are currently try to find the cause. If anyone experience excessive battery drain wants to help out we'd highly appreciate "Reporting a Problem" with "battery drain" as the issue.
If anyone is familiar with taking Android bug reports, stack dumps, or logs, please PM me or directly email [email protected]. Thank you so much for your help!
We take this issue very seriously and are working hard to fix the issue.

Not sure if this is really fixed now, but I just installed Messenger again and I will be monitoring the apps battery usage.

Let us know! I really do like the app and it's handy. In fact, for a few weeks I went all in with facebook and installed facebook Home and used Messenger strictly as my texts and fb messages. It really does work well and chat bubbles are fun and useful. I wish I could integrate Chatheads with hangouts.

Well, as I said earlier today, I had re-installed the app and from what I can tell so far the battery drain problem really seems to be fixed. In the last 5 hours - with the app installed and running the background - battery on my phone went down by 8%. Just a day ago, within those same 5 hours the Messenger app would have drained battery by ~70% easily. If anything changes I'll let you know.

I noticed this the other day too out of the blue. Uninstalled it for now, can message within the Facebook app.

I thought you couldn't. I tried but it says I need to install messenger? Isn't that the stink that everyone brought up a little bit ago?

Not getting good battery life on my ONE

Hi, I have had this phone for almost a week now and have noticed that battery life for me is shocking. I JUSSST about manage to get through a day and some days have to charge the phone a little half way through the day to make it last the extra mile. After the first few days of heavy usage I went back to my regular usage pattern but still the battery hasnt been good. I have posted many screenshots and posts in the 'battery life' & 'battery stats thread' in the ONE General section so check em out. I downloaded GSam battery monitor and found out that my phone has many wakelocks from 'wakelock mediaserver'...at one point I had almost 900 wakelocks from it :/ I tried everything to fix this but couldnt. Plus the phone in general would lose 1% battery every 50 seconds to a minute. I had to resort to a factory reset in the hope that it would fix the issue but that wasnt the case. At first the mediaserver wakelock was nowhere in sight and battery drain was ok compared to before, but then again its back to draining insanely fast and the mediaserver wakelocks are back. Anyone else have this problem? Or anyone else finding that their battery is draining quick?! Because if this persists then im gonna take it back to p4u later in the month and get a new one. Just want to know if this is only happening to me and if anyone has any solutions. Thanks

If you loose power so quickly on new phone you have two options - battery not good or you have too many things going on!!! I will bet it is the second option! Under too many consider all processes you have running on the device.... less job for processor(S), more battery live! All phones come with a lot of crap installed form the vendor(map, wheather, location services, etc...) I will recommend to kill(dissable/enable) all processes you do not need!!! Make a test, but get all important staff out of the phone, so you may need to factory reset if you kill something important. Do not worry, with fact. reset will be like new..... and all the crap already started So good luck
Found this in another device forum, but it could (possibly) help you with your wakelock problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1717237
I've never had the mediaserver wakelock (nor do I have the One yet), so don't know how well this will work. I suppose it's worth a try. If not, you might try Googling the mediaserver wakelock problem to try some other solutions. Seems to be a relatively common problem.
I'm guessing you're a heavy user!
What apps to you have installed? how many apps to you have?
My phone lasted 1 day and 9hrs on one charge with moderate internet use, txt messaging, phone calls - and that was without power saving mode enabled.

S5 battery life sucks. gpsd task

Hi there,
I wanted to check if there is any solution to the ****ty battery life the S5 have. I don't know why Samsung talks **** about iPhone if they can't have a good battery life without the U saving mode.
I've tried everything even turned GPS off. Disabled Samsung remote location. Please help.
I used to achieve 14 hours on my nexus 5... Yes the N5, come on!
That's rough my battery usually lasts me 14 hours ish

How many % the gpsd task shows in yours? Also is it the G900H?
Mine one lasts for 1 complete day with 4g on most of the time.. Screen time is around 4 to 5 hours
If you're coming here to find a solution then use a program to diagnose the issue like wakelock detector or better battery stats. This post lacks information and does not allow us to help you.
you can try to download wake lock detector or better battery stats from the play store to monitor your battery usage

Your problem might be due to any of these 2 reasons
1 app that uses the network is misbehaving
If this is the case than Uninstalling the misbehaving app.
2 the radio control interface
Sometimes the signal from Tower is not that good in your area so setting the network settings to AUTO mode, the phone keeps switching between GSM, WCDMA AND LTE. try setting your phone to GSM ONLY or WCDMA ONLY. it will most probably solve the issue.
Hahaha. I can't believe to see this post. That's the problem dude. I've 5-6 sot on TW with usage all day long, data all the time. And I got 5 sot on cm. Believe me as heavy user here ?

Stock samsung, no root. I flashed the factory image to see if that helped. But no. I cannot use battery tracker apps cause no root :/
I think I will go for a LG G3, not even the SGS4 running stock samsung firmware drained the battery this much.

Model: SM-G900H (Sucks not to have the snapdragon)
ROM: KOT49H.G900HXXU1ANG3
Any Recent Changes: No, using the same apps since Nexus 5. I had Nexus 5 then a Note 3 then an S3 mini then a Note then a Nexus 4 then an S4, running the same apps no issue with this.
How often do you use device: I am at work, so I use mostly for whatsapp, and at lunch to check the social networks.
I have great signal from the network, and I always use my phones with everything on except the bluetooth, I have never had this issue. I left the phone one day on stand by, and it only held the battery for 11hours, with 20minutes of on screen use. And the GPSD task was the only one that was using the battery.
What I've done so far:
I turned samsung remote location off
Factory reset
Removed google location services
Disabled all the apps that uses location like twitter or facebook
Turned the GPS off
Root the device and deleted all samsung apps (the ones that can be unisntalled)
Use the GPS on Low battery usage
Disabled the pedometer
Nothing seems to work.
I am not a really Samsung fan, but I was giving a try to the S5 because the water resistant thing, but if my S3 mini can hold up more battery than this device, for me its a crap. More if they make a lot of fun of apple iphone, and the battery life of the S5 is WORST!

Didn't knew we could change to ART in the S5! Already rebooting to ART, I hope this give me at least 14 hours of battery life! :good: Thanks.
I'll let you know what happened.
I can tell the results tomorrow night when I get home after work to check if the battery life is awesome now.
Definitely some app misbehaving there. I never switch anything of - sync, wifi, GPS always on. On average 6-7 hours screen time. If doing low cpu tasks like reading a book I have got to 12 hours screen.
Worth doing a root and see what the problem is.
Okey! Well i tested the ART for two days now and got no problems so far.
Got WiFi, Bluetooth, Sync, 3G and Location on.
I hope the ART works for you, let me know.

[Q] battery draining ridiculously fast, any idea?

I've never had this problem with my other Notes. In the last couple of weeks I noticed this started to happen, where I'm losing battery ridiculously fast where I can't really use the phone for more than 3 hours. Battery stats show that "Android System" is using the battery. I got the G Sam Battery Monitor app, which reflects the same thing.
But Android System could be any number of things. Any idea what I should be looking at? Where I should start trying to find a culprit?
Is GPS icon flashing? If so, check which app is running in the backgroud that is using GPS.
Also, clear all of your recent apps and see if it fixes it.
No GPS isn't flashing. And I've gotten in the habit of clearing the recently opened apps. Memory shows 2GB of usage but "no active applications." I can't tell if something in the background would be using GPS.
Clean wipe, Odin flash the stock NJ7 build. re-root
Then reflash the ROM you want. Most likely you got something hung up in the code that it is trying to use and is failing so it is constantly running.
That our you have Facebook installed. Jk, sorta for real though worst app ever for battery.

I'm still stock, so haven't rooted or anything. I've been trying to hold out as long as possible. Other than this new battery issue I was OK without root (gasp).
I do have Facebook, and I'm a Facebook and 9Gag abuser, but if those were the apps draining battery, the stats would reflect them, no?
Like I said, I've never experienced this issue. In the past (see my long list of smartphones) I've always been able to pinpoint what's using my battery. Not this time.

Yes, but that's also not the cause of the battery issues. As Samsung doesn't ship out a phone expecting it get 5 hours of battery life and blame it on "LOL we bloated your phone."
I will undoubtedly end up rooting the phone, as I have done with all others, but I don't want to at this point.
Last night it ran out of battery completely while I was at the bar, so I couldn't charge it. That's the first time the phone shuts off in 21 days since I first got it. All my widgets on Go Launcher were lost for some reason. I'm going to let it run through the battery today and get some screenshots later.

Yes, but that's also not the cause of the battery issues. As Samsung doesn't ship out a phone expecting it get 5 hours of battery life and blame it on "LOL we bloated your phone."

Samsung may not but TMOBILE and all the junk running behind the seems and carrieriq and quite a few other things will. Yes they do bloat you and laugh at ya. Either way if you wanna experience great battery life root and get to work. You can also try to leave stock fresh wipe no apps and see for yourself how much bloat hurts you.
BAD ASS NOTE 4
Yup huge difference with firecat. Oddly enough my note 3 had great battery life from just the stock rom.

Sorry, forgot to come back to the thread. After that night when I ran out of battery and the phone turned off (for the first time since I purchased it), I've had great battery life again. So something was definitely stuck. I've now restarted the phone and used it heavily the last two days and the phone has lasted me many many hours.

Incredible Lag and slow Down

so lately in morning phone will run okay...as the day goes on and as the battery drains some it will become almost unusable . 5 to 10 second freezing in lag when switching or opening apps....lock screen freezing black screen etc. had the phone since release and didn't have e problem until recently. Makes me think it may be hardware or an app ... Is there an easy way to see what is slowing phone down? Reminds me when pc has malware just lags so slow. Any ideas?

Not that I know of. You can grab CPU-Z and see what your CPU load is. If its high, then its definitely an app.
Also keep in mind if the phone is hot, it runs slower. This is true of every smartphone out there and the higher end ones suffer from it more. I've only managed to slow this device down during an extended game and that was due to throttling.
Mine started doing this the last 2 days also!!!! I was gonna take it back.... I don't think its CPU load, my phone does not get hot. I did use 4k video record yesterday, wonder if that had something to do with it... or an update to an app.

The phone doesn't have to feel hit to throttle.
Just thought I'd throw my hat into the ring on this one.
I had the same issue here after the last update. A hard reset sorted this.

By some stupid chance, do you have the widget that shows the time, weather, battery and such on your homescreen???
I just noticed this on mine, when the phone lags, the animation for the weather does not happen, as soon as it does, the phone will respond. Its like its waiting for the widget to update before anything else. So, I removed the widget and the phone is much smoother. No more lag. Gonna still have to try it for a few more hours, but I think that's it (at least for me).

hey yea I do have the command widget thing on there.....
As for my situation, I switched back to dalvik and used a cleaner program from the play store and seems to be running much better now.... I'll be interested to see if the findings from removing the widget hold up for the rest of the day for u

So far, about 2 hours and no lag!!! It was an instant fix. I had the lag, removed it and presto!! Gone!
Edit/update
I have had 0 lag ever since!!! I am 95% positive that the widget was the cause.

Donot update lolipop...

My friend got update to lolipop 5.0.1 he ruined his phone battery life..total screen on time 3 hours just
my 4.4.4 kitkat give me this battery life almost 6 hours withour powersaving mode
here is proof
I'm getting 6hr or more with average use on Lollipop 5.0.1
Lots of people who updated, have a little bit less battery runtime with lollipop then with kitkat. I think using "ruined" is a lil over the top. It's a bug in Lollipop (no need to prove your statement) and is on the Nexus and HTC devices too. Still getting easily a full day on a single charge
I can't wait for the update. I'm getting 3 hours SOT with 4.4.4
@Lyrah battery life seems good lol...that is almost the same I am getting.
Over all poorer battery life with lollipop but still not to the extend of "ruined my phone". It is still a good update.

There are always sissies that want to complain. Nothing wrong with lollipop. And don't compare it with kitkat that is using a custom kernel probably
I don t think 2 hours SOT down on non root phone is acceptable update.

It's his personal bug. Samsung never said to him, flash with odin. So don't complain if he is using a unofficially tool. If you do use odin, always wipe your phone or life with it.
Yeah, lollipop destroyed my battery life too, down to 3 hours SOT if I'm lucky, before it was 4:30-5ish hours
Question is: Have you done a factory reset or not? If not, you can complain all day long.
So battery usage for person A compared to person B in an uncontrolled unscientific test....and it "ruined his phone" ?
OK.....
As usual many unhelpful comments. Try turning off wifi when not required. I have the problem and it's much improved by manually turning it off. There appears to be a bug randomly affecting users. Mine was actually fine for the first 3 or 4 days then one day it died really quickly. Wifi was the culprit.
This is what I get with LP. Much worst than KK. I have done full wipe after update N910c
People get an update they've been anxiously waiting for and as a result play with their phone more. Then they complain the battery life is "ruined".
If you're rooted you need to do a couple of things.
Give the new ROM a day to "settle down". This is also for you so that you fall back into normal usage habits.
Then charge your phone to full. Wipe battery stats. Discharge all the way to empty then charge to full again.
You'll get a lot more battery life if you do that each time a new ROM is flashed.
Lastly, calm down. Put down the sky-is-falling megaphone.

I'd also like to add. I can't help but laugh when I see the screen shots as "proof" when the app usage list shows Facebook, or a game, or some other third party app as the culprit. Oh But it's samsungs lollipop updates fault Yeah?

You're a joke and as old as your advices are. I'm not rooted. I use FB for 5 minutes and it stays connected as all apps that use Internet.
They stay connected even if you use them for 1 minute.
Also even if I didn't wanted to have FB it comes preinstalled.
I'm no child and my use pattern is the same as KK.
Stop being an smartie and if you have no real solution to a problem don't comment. Unless it hurts your loved one, Samsung, which no one said was it's fault.
It's just the buggy 5.0.1.
Whatever you say bro. I told you how to fix it. Sure it's old advice but no one seems to do it. And it's a sound practice that has solved nearly every battery life issue I've had with any phone.
And i wasn't speaking to you specifically, just commenting on a general pattern I see with battery complaints. But I see now your screenshot shows Facebook as the top app. So maybe you thought I was talking to you alone. I replied before I even got to the last page.
But funny, you only used it for five minutes and it's the top app. Hmm...so sort of makes my point stronger about a 3rd party app sucking down battery life eh? More reason to root and dump the bloatware.
And sure, your usage behavior remained firmly rooted in stone with a brand new update. whatever you say.
And my love for Samsung? Please I've got iPhones, htc, motorola.... It's the same overblown complaining in every manufacturer's forum.
Take a chill pill.

I'm chilled. I don't want to root just to get rid of bloat that shouldn't had been there in the first place.
And my usage has remained rooted in stones as you say indeed. It's just an update which should had never been pushed with so many bugs.

Thanks man. Just unchecked it and I'll let you know. This sound much more reasonable to be sucking down battery life.
with lollipop I have one houre more SOT (7 hours, 6 with KitKat) and I am very happy with the update!
