tWRP and Custom rom will cause ota to fail.
See. Also. http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-OTA.html

Thanks all
No OTA notification yet. My girlfriend got one for her Telus Moto G tho.

Hi
I got the 4.4.4 from OTA Rogers, but cannot find the stock recovery for it.
From your links I see 4.2.2 etc. and this one ROGERS-CA_GHOST_KXA20.16-1.26_cid14_CFC_1FF.xml.zip
Would that maybe be for 4.4.4?
Thanks

[HELP]

Guys,i have Retail 1058 Moto X with unlocked Bootloader,TWRP(latest and rooted) and i want to upgrade to 4.4.2!
Some guys already received the 4.4.2 brazilian update via OTA,and extracted the zip file, but, since im on custom recovery, the OTA doesnt reboot the phone into stock and go straight to TWRP,therefore, doesnt conclude the update, and keep restarting!
Since i need the phone,i did a factory reset via TWRP just to get things going!
But,i want to upgrade to 4.4.2!
Is there a way to do that?remove TWRP ou something else?
Thx in advance!

First thing is you have posted this in the wrong thread, should be in Q&A section. You need to flash both system and stock recovery to take an ota, I believe this has been mentioned more than a few times

Moved here, as this does not belong in the Dev Section...thanks. OP please read the Forum Rules on posting....

4.4.3

I read that 4.4.3 will be coming any day for Sprint Moto X (already out for T-Mobile.)
I've rooted my phone, deleted some bloatware, installed Xposed, etc.
Will I need to re-flash the stock ROM before updating to 4.4.3?
Or will there be a pre-rooted 4.4.3 on this forum which I can flash right over my phone as it is (like there were for my older devices)?
Sorry, new to Moto X.
You'll need the bloat back, that's why you should only disable and not delete it. OTAs do file checks on the system partition and if any are missing or modified the OTA will fail. You'll also need to disable Xposed as well.

I was just going to ask the exactly same question. I am also on Sprint, and had gone through the official bootloader unlock but not changed the stock rom. I imagine I will still get the OTA update, and taking it will not make me lose root?
I have the OTA update reminder frozen with Titanium Backup right now and am currently running 4.4 out of paranoia. Reading some of the other posts, it seems that I might be OK and OTA updates may only affect those on ATT/Verizon that had to go through other means to get get root?
Always best to freeze...not delete. Takes very little space up and no problem with ota's.
You can always download the official 4.4.2 from Moto and flash system.img and recovery.img. Those will get you back to stock. Then you can take the OTA, flash TWRP, root and reinstall Xposed (all your modules and Xposed/gravity box settings will still be there).
That is what I did going from 4.4 to 4.4.2. Worked like a charm.
You have to flash system.img with mfastboot though not just fastboot. Just Google instructions. They are on xda as well.

What I'm curious about....is if you will be able to downgrade from 4.4.3 to 4.4.2? If its the same bootloader, which I'm sure it is....should be fine. If it isn't....I see many brick threads in the coming days. ?

[Q] Go from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 Unlocked, rooted, twrp

I have new Verizon Moto X Dev Edition. Messed up. Thought it was already on 4.4.2. Not, it's on 4.2.2. Unlocked bootloader and installed twrp and rooted. Wanting to update it to 4.4.2. Thinking from reading that I need to get back to stock recovery for OTA update if that is possible over wifi since phone is not activated yet. Can't find 4.2.2 stock recovery and not sure if that is what I need to do anyway. Is that what I need to do and/or is there a better way? Thanks

Well I too have a Dev Edition but is SIM-Unlocked so it isn't Verizon.
If all you want to do is update, you could install Custom ROM although you will lose Motorola's Active Display, Always Listening etc...
If you want complete stock and have to reflash TWRP and root your phone, you will need to flash the stock firmware using fastboot or a utility.
Finally found 4.2.2 . When trying RSD fail at gpt bin, also fails there with manual flashing. Any ideas?
Edit...Finally got it. Different version of 4.2.2 did it.

I hope it wasn't the pre-camera 4.2.2....or you might be in a tough spot now.... Risking a brick. ?

Unless the first firmware was also pre camera... Then you're OK.

Taking OTA's is incremental, so if you are the initial shipping 4.2.2 you need to take the first 4.2.2 w/camera OTA, then the 4.4 OTA, then the 4.4.2 OTA... a real time waster and pain in the rear.
Best way... Grab the SBF for the version you want to be on, and flash it... i.e. you mention going to 4.4.2, so... grab the 4.4.2 SBF and flash it.
Since you have a Dev Edition, why not just go to 4.4.4? it has a few bug fixes, and is stable. For me and many others its no worse than 4.4.2 as far as performance and battery.
Once you arrive on the ROM you want, you can flash TWRP and root.

OTA'ed to 4.4.2. But for future reference you can skip versions and SBF to the one you want??

Yup! ?
As long as it's not a lower version.

OTA = Incremental. Only patches the changed/updated parts.
SBF/FXZ = "all inclusive" or "image files".. and overwrites entire partitions/parts.
So yes. You can just flash the newer SBF file. (As @Darth said... as long as the SBF you are flashing is NEWER than the version on your phone... i.e. NEVER DOWNGRADE)

You have Root and TWRP, you can't take the OTA with TWRP. SEe -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/faq-how-to-prepare-ota-update-carriers-t3126425
And as for downgrading to Kit Kat, if those who installed the leaked 5.x test versions is any indication, No, you can't downgrade to KK after you install the OTA update to 5.1. See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/info-warning-risks-downgrading-impacts-t3058202
Thanks, i receive the ora in the stock kk wife's device, not on my unlock and rooted moto x. They are the same en. DE from amazon germany
Is moto gen 2
Getting lollipop 5.1 update ???

My question isn't about the update but the notifications. Will one be presented with OTA update when using custom ROM/RECOVERY? I do understand you couldn't actually take it though

Custom Recovery doesn't impact being notified.
Custom ROM, It depends... CM11/CM12 or AOSP based custom roms will not get any notification. But roms based on the stock moto rom, with customizations, debloat, etc... yes you'll get notified.
The OTA will fail if you attempt to install on a custom rom, or if you have a custom recovery installed.
after update can i flash the twrp recovery?
and then can i flash a kk custom rom?

you will likely lose root taking the OTA update.
Since you have an unlocked bootloader, Take the 5.1 OTA, then after taking the OTA you may root by following -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/moto-x-qa/instructions-unlocking-rooting-dev-ed-t2649738 Please be sure to use the latest TWRP fastboot IMG file (Alternate Link) and Installable ZIP of SuperSU

Oke that's what I will do then, thanks for the help :good: Will this root method still work for 5.1?

I flashed TWRP-2.8.6.0-Ghost.img to my Moto X, but now I can't boot into recovery and everytime I restart my phone it needs to optimize apps and that takes ages. Do you have any idea's for how to solve this?
Edit: Never mind, I figured it out and successfully rooted my phone! Thankyou for your help.
