[Q] Recovery writing problems - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've installed CM12 on my Xperia Z and with this Rom CM Recovery was also installed, to finish the installation I tried to flash gapps, but CM recovery said: "Cannot load volume/misc" so I tried to install another Recovery and got the error: " sending 'recovery' (4876 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.131s]
writing 'recovery'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.458s
Rom manager says that CWM is already installed, but there's only CM recovery. I can use another recovery when I flash CWM as boot. So how can I get CWM or TWRP back?
Thanks in advance

I already tried that, didn't work. Any other ideas?

which CM12 have you installed, you may want to install TWRP Recovery. If you prefer
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/187
download openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-yuga.img from the above link.
then do this
adb push openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-yuga.img /sdcard/
adb shell
su
dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-yuga.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/FOTAKernel
exit
exit again
adb reboot recovery

thx for your reply
but it didn't work. tried 4 times but always when it comes to the dd if=/sdcard/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.5.0-yuga.img command the cmd window frozes and the adb shell crashes. no idea what is the problem. Reinstalled the whole software on my computer (adb, fastboot, drivers) but still the same. I think i'm gonna try it again on Saturday on another computer. But thanks for helping!

I've followed this, and it's solved all my recovery problems, I've got just one question. (I'm on Latest CM12 Validus build), when flashing newer builds, will I need to do this again or will recovery remain?

as long as you are on any of the CM12 builds even custom builds based on CM you do not need to reflash, unless you want to update TWRP itself.

I had issues with ADB crashing too, all i had to do was to set the Sleep time to 10 min or more and make sure the phone does not lock

Download the fresh kitchen and use it...
I originally rooted with the command line but corrupted my recovery image upgrading to RA1.6.2 via adb.
The fresh kitchen was the only way out of 4 i tried that was able write a new recovery image.
I am using Fresh 2.0d
Booted into RA
Hit the MS/DOS usb command
then did the commands straight from the amon_RA recovery single post thread, i.e.:
Copy recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img
make sure you dont have any spelling errors...
flash_image recovery /sdcard/whatever_your_image_name_is.img

I thought kitchen (even newest version) wouldn't work with Fresh 2.0d because it is based on 2.1 sprint.
Bump for some help.

[Q] Erased Userdata how to push rom to phone

Was running CM12 nightlies that auto encrypted, so went to format data to remove encryption but keyboard in twrp wasnt accepting any characters so hence i wasnt able to decrypt, so i bootloader->fastboot erase userdata...now im back in twrp phone still encrypted (i know the password so im ok) but now theres obviously no rom on the phone how do i push a rom & kernel to my phone adb sideload seems to be hanging on "starting adb sideload feature" and when im in bootloader mode adb doesnt find my device
Fastboot erase userdata doesn't remove the ROM.
Adb isn't designed to work in bootloader. Use of in recovery. You can use adb to push files to /sdcard
See my thread here if you need help
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3006500
Plug the phone in to your computer and go to mount and enable mtp. Then go to your computer and copy and paste the rom zip as well as other zips (gapps kernel etc) onto your phone.

Kinda had that issue I just used OTG with the ROM on it that solved my problem
or you can adb push files to your phone, via adb while you are in your recovery. but from what i understand/have heard, cm kernel does not allow decryption.

no they just don't give you an option to not encrypt with they're kernel, so you must flash another kernel after every nightly etc.

What does adb devices say when booted in recovery?

adb reboot recovery not opening recovery

I can not go to recovery (stock or custom) with "adb reboot recovery" command (adb is otherwise working). It just reboots the phone.
Third party apps to reboot in recovery not working also, except ROM Manager. I recently installed AOSP (by MoltenMotherBoard) it is not rooted. Now I can not reboot in recovery with ROM Manager.
My phone buttons are dead, only software solution is needed.
How to fix this?
Need in immediate help.

@kessaras @Phil_Smith
IMHO, this xda post is closest theory on "setup-recovery" p880 trick : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22212494&postcount=22
Also , only twrp is handling specific stuff : https://github.com/omnirom/android_bootable_recovery/search?utf8=✓&q=rebootrecovery.sh&type=Code
Thx to twrp300/multirom sources , looks latest Multirom Trampolinev27 (slightly modified) with both reboot options
- regular reboot to bootloader/fastboot OK
- modified/warm reboot to recovery with f2fs OK: press/power only straight to recovery, or no-press straight to primary AND 1st reboot from aosp6/7 straight to recovery; both with f2fs !
Finally there are many ways to run "setup-recovery",without PCadb & within aosp6/7, 3Ctoolsboxfree(+su) or even Kadiutor via init.d section: copy system/bin/setup-recovery to etc/init.d/ then use KAdiutor/init.d section to trigger the script + 3dots reboot...

How to unlock bootloader on D405 v20a?

Hi!
I haven't found aboot.zip for my device. LG D405 v20a. Help anyone? Rooted but need to unlock to install TWRP and custom ROM.
You must have full rooted device. Install terminal from play and open it.
Type: su
(grant superuser permission)
then type:
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/aboot of=/sdcard/aboot.bin
VERY careful with spaces and punctuation. One wrong letter and you could nuke your phone.
Then download Flashify and install latest version of TWRP.
Note: You must save aboot.bin file in root of your external sd card before execute command.

Did everything as you said. Took the twrp.img file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-l90/development/recovery-twrp2-7-1-0lgl90w7xxshoxx-t2826150
After installed from flashify I go boot to recovery and then I get LG logo with white text Secure Booting Error! Cause: boot certification verify and black screen. Nothing happens then and I have to take my battery out and then put it in to reboot and it loads back to stock rom normally. What is wrong?

Hm if you work step by step it should be all right and that you can enter into recovery. Try again download aboot.bin and then do the same. Maybe the file is corrupted when you downloaded to disk.

I did the same but my bootloader is still locked
Because the adb commands were executed fine I thought it worked and I tried to flash TWRP. Probably flashing was okay but no I cannot boot into recovery. I get an android lying on his back with an exclamation mark. And fastboot getvar all tells me the bootloader is not unlocked.
What can I do to repair my recovery and unlock the bootloader (v20a)?
Try it again. Remember: Even if you execute it over adb shell, you need to type "su" first. Afterwards you need to allow the root access of adb shell on your phone (if you have never used it before). You should get the "#" on adb shell now. Only now you are able to execute the copy of the aboot.bin. If it executes fine you should see something like "1 file copied" if I remember correctly.
