Good news: I took adavantage of Samsung's 50% off special to pick up an Allshare dongle for $50.
Bad news: Can't get it working on my rooted TMO GNII.
This is what happens *every time* I try to connect (20-30 times)
Hooked up dongle to TV via HDMI. TV shows Allshare ready to connect on the screen.
With the red led flashing on dongle, I press the reset button and the led changes to solid blue.
On phone, try to connect with Allshare Cast utility.
Phone sees and connects to dongle.
Screen on TV changes to screen with black background and says connecting, but never gets any further and never shows the phone screen on the TV. (See attached image)
Connection is lost after 10 seconds and this message appears in a pop up on phone: "Current AllShare Cast connection will end."
Here's what I've tried so far. Each time getting the same result as described:
Updating Allshare Cast app from Play store.
In SuperSU app, unrooting phone by unchecking Enable Superuser.
Restoring stock T-Mobile rom from nandroid backup, with and without Superuser enabled.
Installing and running Triangle Away 3 times in a row. This got the flash counter down to 1, but not 0. Also shows Binary status: Custom.
In stock rom and with SU disabled, the phone downloaded and sent a firmware update to the dongle, but this update did not change results at all.
Hoping someone can give me something else to try. If not I may have to completely unroot and restore stock image to verify this works at all. Then go step by step through rooting, adding back Clockwork recovery, etc. to see where the Allshare connection gets broken.
Get the triangle away app. Reboot and enjoy. Theres a thread on getting this to work, and I can attest to it working cause im rooted custom rom and enjoying my allshare
Also try uninstalling triangle away and reinstalling. When you run the app does it reboot your phone for you? Mine does and thats when I know it works.

Already tried this, 3 times. Yes, it rebooted my phone. I wish it had worked for me! Will try uninstall/reinstall of TA as you suggest. So what rom/recovery are you using? When you do a Vol down/Home/Power button boot up, what does it say for your Counter and Binary Status?
Yup I'm seeing the same problem but with Wanam RIM.

Had same problem. I could almost cut and paste your post OP. Its not root status, nor does a custom rom necessarily bugger allcast function; its the kernal. You currently cannot run any custom kernal and have allcast function. Triangle Away is powerless in the face of this vial DRM kernel menace.
You can mix and match or use some modded roms and you can debloat and/ or freeze much of your junk. When using triangle away for the allcast dongle TA activation must be done in a paticular sequence...
Chainfire gives detailed info in his "triangle away" thread. ( you've propbably found this already but if you haven't, then it is a must read.)

So if I understand correctly, being rooted and having a custom ROM do *NOT* prevent the dongle connection from working. It's having a non-stock kernel that makes it not connect, is that correct? So in theory if I restore the stock rom from my nandroid backup, and correctly run TA, it should work fine? Now what about having a custom recovery? Does that have any effect on the Allshare dongle? I have Clockwork. Do I also need to restore the stock recovery?
Also, in the TA thread, I'm not seeing the part about "When using triangle away for the allcast dongle, TA activation must be done in a paticular sequence... " Could you please copy and paste that part into this thread? Thanks.
Yep, you got it right vouty. The kernal must be stock to connect allcast dongle. The rom can be modified stock or custom but your success may vary.
You can be rooted....and you can use custom recovery, I am using use twrp (cmw is said to also work).
[But if you use a custom recovery, my current understanding is that, your flash counter will be reset from 0 to 1 on a boot up. Take this with a grain of salt. ]
I refered to a sequence, sorry if I made it more complicated than necessary. Just reflash triangle away, and don't check the counter, if you do it will set counter back to one if you have a custom recovery. Hope this helps, the dongle works really well, you're going to like it.

Thanks for getting back Vizo. So I got it working! I tried restoring the stock rom from nandroid, restoring the stock recovery, then running TA, but still didn't work. At that point I know I'm gonna have to do a full stock image restore and what I chose was this method from mrRobinson: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1975560
If you follow the simple steps, as written in the thread, this will fully restore stock ROM, recovery and wipe the Internal SD space putting your T-Mobile Note II back to perfect, out of box condition, with Device Status showing "Normal" and counter status as original... BUT PHONE IS ROOTED! And it does it all in just one easy step. Definitely owe mrRobinson a beer.
The dongle is now working with my phone and it is awesome! Already got Netflix streaming installed and working. Gotta hand it to Samsung. Allshare cast is a "Killer App"!!!
Only remaining issue is that I don't have a custom recovery, so no flashing any goodies like custom toggles, status bar mods, or 4.2 camera for now. Want to enjoy the Allshare goodness for awhile before I risk breaking it with Clockwork and TA not being able to fix it. Hoping Chainfire can work his magic on this issue and break the triangle's back permanently!
interesting to hear everyone's experiences with the dongle problem. i was having similar problems but had the luxury of testing out with my rooted t-mobile note II and wife's stock ATT note II. i was getting the exact same "connection will end message" on both phones. decided to change TV's and found that i was able to use the allsharecast dongle without any problems. didn't have to restore or change anything. worked right away after plugging in to different tv. i'm wondering if there may be some incompatibility with the HDMI signal or connection with the TV that could be contributing to dongle connection problems?

My phone has never been rooted or changed - it is totally original, straight out of the box. I can't do anything to connect to this Dongle thing. Please help me if you can.
Hmm have you tried a different tv. It has worked on all the tv's I've tried mine on but some have reported that this can work...also just to clarify things did u run the update from the play store?

Things to check:
System settings>About device>Status - Scroll to last item, Device status. It should say "Normal." If it says anything else, like "modified," then it probably won't work.
Check everything is right with the dongle connections:
I would suggest using the HDMI cable that comes with the dongle, just to rule that out.
Ensure you are "pairing" correctly. The correct steps are to *FIRST* put the dongle in pairing mode. Start by unplugging the power and plug back in. Wait for the led on the dongle to start flashing red. Tap (do not long-press) the reset button. This should immediately make the led turn solid blue. It *will not* pair unless the led is solid blue. When the led is solid blue, the dongle is ready to pair. Now on the phone, pull down the notification bar and tap the Allshare toggle (it's way over on the right). It should see and connect to the dongle. Like bluetooth, you only need to pair the first time. After that, it will auto-connect everytime you toggle on Allshare and the dongle is in range.
Once I restored my GNII to factory stock, as I described, the pairing worked perfectly, the first time, and has been working ever since. Good luck!

I suppose anything is possible and that there could be TV's out there with old, non-compliant HDMI inputs. But if anyone was gonna have this issue, it would be me. My TV is a cruddy, 5 yr old Olevia 26" 720p hunk of junk from Frys. Yet every HDMI signal I've ever plugged in (Windows laptops, weird DVI-HDMI ebay media players, even my old HTC Sensation with an MHL adapter) have worked fine. Hoping Santa brings me a nice shiny new "ultra-thin" full HD resolution HDTV for XMAS!
Help Please
Got my Note 10.1 about a week ago along wıth AllShare Cast Dongle. Everything worked fine at first but after doıng a factory reset (which I was advısed to do by Samsung Support because of some dısappearing icons) I can connect but after about 2-5 minutes of video the pıcture freezes on both TV & Tablet . Get a message on tablet - Allshare connection is unstable - then - Current Allshare Cast Connection will end. The frozen pıcture on the screen then breaks up and goes to green screen.
If I try to connect at this stage Tablet cannot see the dongle (blue light on) & only way to get ıt seeıng ıt agaın ıs to take out power lead for a few minutes.
Unfortunately I am in Turkey at the moment so cannot go to Samsung Service Centre (language problems) so if anyone can give me any advice it would be much appreciated.
This is my fırst Android device and everything is stock. Still running ICS.
1st Have you applied the allshare cast update? There were a lot of reports of sketchy connection issues with the allshare dongle. The recent firmware update from the playstore seems to have fixed many of them.
2nd which phone are you on? You mention you are on ics. If its not the dongle it does complicate matters a bit, since I'm on jellybean. Still, If you can answer the first update question, and provide ,model ,make ,rooted and /or
non/stock plus kernel info, I'll do what I can to help.
3rd, Turkey! You traveling on business or pleasure? What are your impressions? Always wanted to travel out that way, find it a fascinating country as a serious history buff......

Everything is just as described above. Can't connect to my home TV but I've connected without any problems to different TV. Can the problems relate to WiFi settings? How is data transmitted between dongle and TV?
Thanks for your time Vizographic
Did mention in my post usıng Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet. Received an update to dongle last nıght just before I posted, did not appear to make any difference. Just tried again and video ran for just under 5 minutes before connection stopped and reported unstable. Everything stock (have not played with anything apart from factory reset) Android Version 4.0.4 as have not yet received the upgrade to JB.
I now live in Turkey and have no intentions of movıng again - beautiful country, very friendly people (now have a Turkish wife) and a nice climate. If you are a history buff Ephesus about 1.5 hours away and Troy about 5 hour drive. Did not buy tablet here as electronics about double the price of the States.
uzumlubay, its seems I missed this detail, in the first sentence of your post....
"Did mention in my post usıng Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 Tablet."
How sad is that? Well, i sure can't blame you if you ignore any of my proffered advice! My bad..lol. Ok, I've come up with two things you can try.
1st download wifi analyser free from the market. The dongle has it's own wifi built in, it will show up along with all the surrounding wifi routers and the channels they use. The app will detect and suggest optimum channel settings and highlight crowded channels. If the dongles channel is crowded it would display the issues your describing. It would be best if you could moniter the connection with your tablet on a second device, but either way it might help with figuring this out.
2nd,There have been a few posts on power supply to the dongle being fickle. If you haven't already, try a different power supply, one that puts out 5 volts...it seems to have worked for a few.
3rd, substitute the suppied hdmi cable with another one known to work well. There is at least one case, displaying connection issues very similar to yours, that turned out to be caused by a bad allcast cable.
4th "I now live in Turkey and have no intentions of movıng again - beautiful country, very friendly people (now have a Turkish wife) and a nice climate. If you are a history buff Ephesus about 1.5 hours away and Troy about 5 hour drive." If any of my half baked ideas solve your problem, I fully expect you to invite me to stay with ya'll in Turkey. ..and does your wife have any sister's

I've successfully set up my Chromecast with my Gnex hotspot and my Galaxy S 4G, and Netfilx and Google Play Music stream perfectly: however, Youtube and Google Play Movies and TV is tricky: it takes too long to load when it works. I got a Youtube video to work but only once. Tabcasting works but it lags. I think we need a thread that troubleshoots this type of problem, but if I'm wrong, please disregard this thread. If it's needed, please share your experiences here. The screenshots I'm attaching is my current setup (I switch my one sim card between phones): in this case, my Galaxy S 4g is the hotspot, my Gnex is MyPhone, MT6451 is my laptop #1, VPCM11AX is laptop #2, FranciscosiPhone is my iphone, and the Azurewave Tech is (I'm assuming) Chromecast.
Update: gnex as hotspot, s 4g as source with Aircast streams movies from SD card.

May I ask how you managed to get this thing to work? I've tried multiple methods for Wifi tethering using the Galaxy Nexus and all have failed. I have tried Wifi Tether 3.4 and the stock tethering option. The errors include, AP Isolation needing to be turned off, UPnp not configured, and no connection. Once I do eventually get connected, its slow and just kicks off while trying to reload. Are there any additional settings in the wifi tether app that need to be addressed? Any help would be great. Thank you.
No need for apps. I'm running cm10.2 on my gnex and 10.1 on my galaxy s 4g. Try to setup with the chromecast app but don't change the Chromecastxxxx network name. That is one problem. The next problem is "connection failed" due to password. That's fine. Double check your gnex password and try again. If you get try again just press cancel and you'll be set. It's a bit tricky but I've done it several times with both phones. If you get stuck, let me know and I'll post a video or something.
After I pressed cancel, I was set up. The first time I did it, I didn't know I was set up until I noticed the app said "Ready to Cast." Then, after resetting the Chromecast to troubleshoot some problem, I realized that changing the ChromecastXXXX name is the main problem.

Yeah I use my One's hotspot to connect the two as well. Funny my LTE is faster than my router.

Yeah, runs fine. Though, naturally my battery drains quickly.
I've tried this method and it doesn't work for me. Left the chromecast's ID as default, was able to get it to connect, but the Chromecast itself is never recognized by any device. I can refresh or toggle wifi and eventually it will show up as an option in Google Music/Youtube, but then trying to connect to it produces an error message.
I have tried using a Galaxy Note on T-Mobile run tethering and surprise surprise, it works, but because they don't have unlimited data like I do on Verizon, it's not an option at all. Seems like it might be an issue specific to the GNex.

So with this method you used your galaxy s as the hotspot and the gnex to setup the chromecast correct? I don't have a second phone to do that, have you gotten this to work by using the windows chromecast setup app? I can't connect...with or without a password on my hotspot and using 2.4ghz only.
Please explain how you set this up step by step
Currently, I'm using the gnex as a hotspot. I originally used chrome on Ubuntu to set up. Actually, any setup will work. I switched to see what works best and I think the gnex hotspot is more stable. You will, however, need a 2nd phone or computer to setup. Sometimes setup gets a bit tricky and says setup failed but that may not be correct, as I showed in the screenshots.

Thanks, I'll try this out when I get home and see how it fairs.
I tried the 2.4Ghz setting and the Chromecast app doesn't recognize the Chromecast at all. Even though it's set up and connected to the network, the app will detect it as needing to be setup, even though Chromecast displays "Ready to Cast." I really think it has to be related to some Verizon LTE thing because I don't really know why it would instantly work on a T-Mobile Galaxy Note but not for a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Doesn't really make any sense. I don't think using CM10.1 has anything to do with it either. I also tried CM10.2 with the same results.
OK. If you are "Ready To Cast" and you can't, this is what I found: YouTube, Google movies, and music are "blocked" if you don't have a paid hotspot plan, but Netflix and casting from your computer should work. On my sim, I had about 99gb of data and Google doesn't cast but Netflix and tab casting works. On my wife's sim, the hotspot on her plan is still less than 500mb so I can stream. This is on T-Mobile.

I would love to be able to wirelessly mirror my Rooted but locked Moto X on 4.4.3 to the chromecast. It seems like it's working on devices about as fast as the moto x so I would imagine they just have it disabled for devices not officially supported. Would there be a way through Xposed or some other method to enable this feature? THANKS!
Is it possible it's in the 4.4.4. Code?

I think it's supposed to already work with devices that are still on 4.4.2. It seems more to do with the new version of the chromecast app itself (version 1.7). I just don't know how to trick it into thinking the moto x is a supported device. Maybe just a build prop tweak would be enough?

As this topic is on Screen Mirroring, can anyone successfully connect a rooted X to a smart TV? I have been trying to connect it with my W6 series Bravia for past half an hour and could not be able to. It just says connecting but never connects! I am not talking about the Chromecast feature here, but the built in Miracast of X which can be found under Display.
S4 had the same problem when I rooted it, wouldn't connect, but with stock kernel S4 did connect fine. Anyone?

My rooted X works perfectly with my Netgear Push2TV (this is branded to use "WiDi", which according to wikipedia is 100% compatible with "Miracast"). It comes in very handy for presentations.
I always have multiple people asking me "How did you do that with your phone?!?!" after the presentations

My router is not netgear...I don't have a smart TV, so I'm using a "Netgear Push2TV" device which just plugs into the HDMI port of any TV and is made specifically for WiDi / Miracast (you can google it if interested - it's actually been out for several years now).
Yes, I'm using Xposed. I'm rooted with several root apps, but using the Stock ROM / kernel.
When I first connect my phone to the "Push2TV", the Push2TV displays a 4 (or 6?) digit code on the screen and asks me to enter it on my device. The phone pops up a number pad and I enter the code. A few seconds later, screen mirroring is ON.
I also want to add that though I've seen some reports of the "Chromecast" method resulting in choppy video and/or no sound, the built-in mirroring has worked flawlessly for me. Sometimes I use the "Xfinity TV-Go" app to stream television episodes to the TV. You can't tell that it's not being played directly from the TV. Picture and sound have both been excellent.

Oh I get it, it's a device like Chromecast or sort. I guess it's the kernel, I am on Faux's. Let me see if it works with stock kernel. Do you happen to have a zip of stock kernel?
I get that four digit code thingy, I did that when I had the S4 and it used to connect successfully.

Hmm, I've never used a custom Kernel, but boot.img contains the Kernel. I bet that is your issue. You should be able to download the SBF for your carrier, extract "Boot.img", and fastboot flash it.
I suggest making a backup first, just in case something goes awry.
Let us know if that does the trick.

Lol, thanks mate. I did extract the boot.img some days back from the ROM and I flashed it via Fastboot, everything went fine and I even got the stock kernel back, but WiFi would not turn on, and without WiFi I can't do this test. I guess something is missing from the boot.img file, something else needs to be flashed as well, just don't know what.
I am giving up. I will format the phone when 4.4.4 will be released and that time I will check if Screen Mirroring works or not, it should, just for the peace of mind, then I will have to flash custom kernel and then it will stop working again.
I've got a Verizon DE, 4.4.2 rooted, running Faux 007m. I can use wireless display (screen mirroring) through my Netgear PTV2000 or my miracast enabled Samsung TV without issue.

Up until the most recent update, I have been able to share my screen to my Chromecast and then open NFL Mobile.
Now, it displays a message on my TV stating to disconnect my device in order to use it.
Is there a way to prevent this check.
Thought would be to root, and allow the screen cast service to work without the phone reporting this is being done.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Am I the only one that this affects?
Or do some people in this community use a custom Rom that avoids this issue. Any response would be greatly appreciated.
Yeah this sucks, hopefully someone will figure out a work around.

Also having this issue and I am pretty pissed off about it. This was the only way for me to watch my beloved Denver Broncos out of network without paying over $100/month for tv I dont need or want.

It's affecting everyone - /r/Chromecast/comments/2isxbo/nfl_mobile_no_longer_casts_video/ (I can't post links?)
The change appears to have gone into affect at least yesterday.
It went into affect the moment I updated the NFL Mobile app on 10/6/2014. I am thinking, something could be done. If ruining a custom ROM, couldn't there be a way to ensure what ever flagged is engaged when the Cast Screen sevice is used to always show as off, so nfl mobile does not know it is being used.
This also affects the Samsung Allshare media cast device. (Mirror mode on my Note 3).

Makes sense. I did try the factory reset but the app says a new update is required...so I'm guessing rolling it back to the pre-10/6 version wouldn't work.
I believe a similar workaround was developed into custom ROMs for hiding HDMI connections but after searching online I can't find anything that references a similar cloak for the screen cast service.
Now, I am not opposed to rooting my phone and using some hdmi adapter. Anyone confirm if there is a ROM that allows the NFL Mobile to stream to the TV in any means necessary.

Supposedly the play store app no longer has rooted phone detection, but that update was about a year ago - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45088481&postcount=244

I'm far from an expert on this matter, but it seems to me it has something to do with the permissions enabled by the NFL Mobile app. With screen cast/mirroring, you connect these devices wirelessly and you may need to cloak this connection in order to throw off the NFL app? In any event, I'm having the same issue and was hoping someone could help.
A work around includes an app called screen stream mirror. NowI don't have the link to it, but it requires root. It can be used with a chrome cast to allow you to watch video which you normally wouldn't be able to. Cost is $5.00.
What's this teensie I've read about? Hacking your chrome cast, anyone heard about it?
Thank You. I will be making some modifications
Re:
NFL mobile app now checks to see if the phone has been rooted and/or has the developer options turned on. In either case it will not allow streaming to a bigger screen. Back in August 2014 they banned rooted phones altogether from watching preseason games, then because of an outcry, they have allowed them back in partially to watch from the phone but not project onto a big screen. They also have put a DRM protection in so you cannot set up a mock location with a gps spoofer app.
No audio with the "Screen stream mirror" app.

It works. If you are rooted, it stands the audio. If not, microphone. Either way, Just enable it in the settings.

Email the developer. They will work with you.
If your audio does not work, I would assume 1 of 2 things.
1. Your media volume on your phone is turned all the way down.
2. Running a custom ROM that is interfering with how the application works.
Does the audio fall to transmit with every application you open on your phone?
Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition, audio plays on the phone but does not cast with the video, have not tried other apps.

I have a Verizon Galaxy S4 and had the same problem. The recommendation that worked for me was rebooting the Chromecast - just unplug then reconnect the power to the Chromecast unit, wait for it to cycle back up and try again.
I doubt many have this problem as most people using smart view have a wifi connection they use to connect their devices to. My display adapter is one that doesn't connect to a network but instead basically creates it's on wifi connection that my phone connects to using WiFi direct. Before the Oreo update it worked flawlessly and still does on my S7 Edge.
Now when I try to connect to it on my Note 8 it's tries to connect and in some instances connects, but then almost immediately disconnects there after. I contacted samsung support and had them remote into it to see if they could get it to work. They told me it was a bug and that they would forward it to the development team, and that a fix should come soon for the bug. Well it's now going on three weeks since then and there has yet to be a update out fixing the issue. I emailed Samsung support reminding them of the issue and they said there was no reported problems related to smart view and that the next update should fix a lot of the bugs that came with the first update.
My hope with this post is that others might have the same issue or a work around, and if not, that maybe Samsung will eventually see it and find a fix for it. My S7 doesn't perform as well as my Note 8 so I'm hoping a solution comes soon.

Where can I find whatever it is that you did to make yours work? Mine works at my friend's house using WiFi and a Chromecast. But WiFi direct to a WiFi video adapter just doesn't work and it makes no sense. Did yours work on nougat?
No mines never worked still don't.
My wife's does out of the box. I have heard so many horror stories. His works his don't. This firmware. That firmware. No one really knows what's wrong with it.
Mine works about half way. I can't never fully connect. Like my tv acknowledges that my phone is trying to connect but my phone never does. My s7 did this too. But my note 5 worked great
Same problem. Galaxy S7 trying to mirror on Samsung Smart TV. Worked fine before Oreo. Now, it says it's connected, then says "Screen Mirroring ended" Help!
I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 and have the exact same problem using the smartview funtion that came with the phone. It will work fine for youtube videos but when I try to stream a video from other apps smartview will disconnect and then freeze my phone untill it restarts itself. Before oreo I had no problems using smartview without wifi. Have you heard of any fixes yet??
Still no workaround? :'(
