Not the first time I flash anything, but first time dealing with a Nexus device.
I'm using the Nexus Root Toolkit to boot into TWRP, but when I try to look for the zip, I cannot find it in my phone.
I'm running stock 5.0.1
Any help would be appreciated.

why would you use the toolkit to boot into your recovery? 1. you can boot into your bootloader, pick the recovery, then boot into the recovery. 2. you can install an app that will let you boot right into the recovery. 3. you can type reboot recovery into a terminal emulator straight from your phone as well.
did you download the kernel? are you looking at the right file system?

What you're saying doesn't sound right.
Once you install TWRP recovery via NRT you don't need to use NRT to boot into TWRP.
Simply use your phone to download the kernel zip to your phone...... Say to storage> emulated > downloads.
Then on your phone boot into recovery (TWRP) tap Install and it should find the file. If not, you can easily navigate to it within TWRP.

absolutely. root toolkits have nothing to do with it. if im wrong, then ive been doing it wrong for 7 years, heck, root toolkits for a nexus isnt quite right either, considering it takes 3-4 minutes to root any nexus without a toolkit(the right way) :silly:

Thank you guys... got it. I flashed TWRP using the NRT and I was able to view the zip and install.

I would like to root my phone and keep it stock as much as possible.
After reading, it seems that I could S-Off then root (I would like to avoid unlocking my phone with HTCDev). Now it seems that I need to flash a recovery to be able to root. Is it? Otherwise how could I do it without the recovery?
Thanks!

you can fastboot boot the recovery and then flash root. That way you stay stock while still having root.

Your information is a little off. Most root methods don't involve installing the su binary separately from your superuser app. You should also learn how to use fastboot, as suggested above.
You will need to have a recovery image (most people use TWRP), and a root zip (most people are using SuperSU's zips these days, you can find them in the root guides around this forum). Download the root zip to your phone before you do anything else.
You need to boot your phone into fastboot mode (restart the phone, then hold VOL UP/VOL DOWN and POWER), and then with the phone plugged into your computer, run:
fastboot boot /path/to/recovery.img
That will boot your phone once into a custom recovery. From here, depending on the recovery you're using (most will use TWRP), you can hit the appropriate install option, navigate to wherever you downloaded your root ZIP, and then flash that. Reboot the phone, and you'll be rooted, and the one-time recovery will be gone.

You have to "Full unroot" in SuperSU settings and restore the stock recovery. Otherwise OTA will fail. After the OTA is installed, You can easily return to TWRP and flash SuperSU.
okay thanks! also instead of twrp could I use chainfire again?
Unfortunately, i tried to install OTA and now every time i turn on my phone it reboots and tries to install 5.02 only to get an error and it stays at twrp menu. So what can i do now?
lol after many reboots phone decided to tell me that update was unsuccessful so it works again.
more details pls for a beginner
I made the same mistake trying to flash OTA 5.02 over rooted device 4.4.4 . I got out of the loop by moving the download zip from system/cache to external sd...
just wanting to make sure I do all the right things and in order:
so in Super SU I go the FULL UNROOT
how do I then restore stock recovery?
Once I I have restored it what are the steps for the zip and install via stock recovery?
sorry about the boring questions - it's still a bit of a jungle for a beginner

Sure. But why? Twrp is superior in every aspect. It's like deliberately crippling your toaster so that only one slice fits.
Will I be able to install ota updates with stock recovery and after unroot if I do changes to /system?

Nice imagination.
But why do I often read that TWRP will be overwritten by Lollipop with custom recovery when rebooting the phone? Some people therefore recommend the Chainfire CF-Auto-Root instead.
So after unlocking bootloader can I flash TWRP in fastboot mode and superSU afterwards without those kind of problems?

It's a "feature" introduced by google for their nexus. I will quote the twrp website:
The stock ROM will automatically replace TWRP with the stock recovery. To prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP, boot TWRP, go to the mount menu and mount system, press the home button, then press Advanced ->File Manager. Browse to /system and select the file named recovery-from-boot.p then choose to rename the file to recovery-from-boot.bak
Or you flash the SuperSU.zip. That will prevent the override too.

Thx a lot for your explantion.
This was one of the things that irritated me right from the start when I was checking out the possibilities of custom recovery/root within 5.0.
I heard about the file-renaming thing but didnĀ“t realize that superSu will do the job too and that it is a Nexus "feature" at all.
Helped me very much!
Looking for some help from you guys from the S6 forums. I have a rooted S6 Edge via Ping pong Root that I can not install custom recovery on no matter what I try. I've posted in the S6 Edge forums but no one has come up with anything to help. So, I'm trying here. I tried the TWRP app = No recovery install, tried Flasify = Bootloop. Any one have any ideas?
Tried Using:
2 PC's running Windows 8
1 Laptop running Win 7
Latest USB drivers.
Odin 3.10 (Elevated Privileges)
Couple of USB cables.
Could this be your problem?
Note many devices will replace your custom recovery automatically during first boot. To prevent this, use Google to find the proper key combo to enter recovery. After typing fastboot reboot, hold the key combo and boot to TWRP. Once TWRP is booted, TWRP will patch the stock ROM to prevent the stock ROM from replacing TWRP. If you don't follow this step, you will have to repeat the install.

Thanks, I tried this a dozen times without any success. Weirdest thing I've flashed countless recoveries on other phones HTC, Samsung, Lg, etc. and never once ran into this. I'm not giving up, gonna figure it out, hopefully.

Try this:
1. Download twrp recovery and zip it with the installer script. Make sure it's named recovery.img
2. Install flashfire
3. Flash twrp update zip with flashfire
4. Hopefully boot into twrp!

Awesome!
TLDR: It's here and it may eat your data, and you will lose SuperSU root if currently installed. READ the install instructions carefully!
Pixel XL
Pixel
DO NOT RESTORE DATA FROM alpha builds of TWRP using RC1. You will probably lose all data including internal storage. If you need to restore a data backup from an alpha build, reinstall the alpha and restore using the alpha and make a new backup using RC1.
Note: Do not use if you have multiple users (including a guest user)
File Based Encryption (FBE) can be a bit tricky. If a restore doesn't work correctly, it can trigger an automatic wipe of your data. Sometimes TWRP will fail to prompt you to enter your password or otherwise fail to set up decrypt properly. If this happens, reboot TWRP. It seems to be some kind of timing issue and I haven't had time to track it down yet.
Pixel devices have 2 "slots" for ROMs / firmware. TWRP will detect whichever slot is currently active and use that slot for backup AND restore. There are buttons on the reboot page and under backup -> options to change slots. Changing the active slot will cause TWRP to switch which slot that TWRP is backing up or restoring. You can make a backup of slot A, switch to B, then restore the backup which will restore the backup of A to slot B. Changing the slot in TWRP also tells the bootloader to boot that slot.
The zip install method installs TWRP to both slots.
Installation:
If you already have TWRP installed: Download the latest zip and install the zip using TWRP.
If you do not already have TWRP installed: Download both the img and the zip. Copy the zip to your device. You will need to have fastboot binaries and the correct drivers installed. Power off your device completely. Hold volume down and turn on the device. Your device should now be in the bootloader. Connect the device to your PC. Open a command window and run the following command from the proper location:
fastboot boot path/to/twrp.img
This will temporarily boot TWRP on your device. If you are using a lockscreen pin/pattern/password and do not get prompted to enter your passord, reboot to the bootloader and try again. Go to install and browse to the zip and install the zip. If you are currently rooted with SuperSU, you will need to reflash the stock boot image before installing TWRP. After installing the stock boot image, follow the instructions for installing TWRP. Once TWRP is installed, grab the very latest SuperSU released on 2015-11-15 or later and install SuperSU.
If you accidently flash TWRP to your device using fastboot instead of temporarily booting the image, you will need to download the latest factory image for your device and reflash the boot image.
NOTE about 3.2.1-0: This version will decrypt Android 8.1, however the new image is built in Android 8.1 and may not be compatible with SuperSU and/or Magisk until they update their stuff. I have not tested. Good luck.
3.2.1-1 has working decrypt with the February security patch!
3.2.1-2 fixes some zip install errors
3.2.3-1 supports decrypting Android 9.0 Pie even with a pin / pattern / password set
How to install SuperSU SR5 on TWRP RC1: In TWRP tap on Advanced -> File Manager and scroll to and select the fstab.marlin or fstab.sailfish file and then delete it.
Amazing work sir! I think this is what we've all been waiting for! I mean I know I've been checking here frequently, hoping for this
Wow and so it begins, great work thanks!
Thanks

No I haven't downloaded anything yet. Not going to until I can have supersu alongside twrp.
Why does installation of this remove SuperSU?
Aren't they supposed to be used side-by-side?
And it also warns not to install if expecting important calls.
Does it prevent the phone apps from operating or what?
I understand everything else.

"In other words, Chainfire's systemless root method modifies the same binary that TWRP needs to modify in order to get data decryption working. Therefore, when you flash TWRP you are overwriting the changes made to the init binary by Chainfire's systemless root method. While this is a minor setback, thanks to the dual partition nature of the Pixel (and future devices shipping with Nougat), TWRP has some nifty new capabilities."
I'm pretty sure he's just saying dont chance something going wrong like it bootlooping or wiping data if you need your phone for something important like a phone call. Tough to answer said phonecall in a boot loop.

I get exactly the same. Even after several attempts at booting the img, i don't get prompted to enter the PIN / passphrase as stated in instructions hence why the data is encrypted i presume.

I finally got passed that issue. I had to flash factory images and erase everything to the point of being at setup screen. I didn't set anything up, no network or wifi, skipped Google sign in, no password and also no Google functions activated. This led to an unencrypted setup, so after turning on dev settings and Android debugging I booted up the image. Now my issue is the zip to install twrp for sailfish is corrupt and if you try to unzip it there are no files in it....I downloaded the marline zip and there are files when unzipped....

That's the stock Android recovery. If you want to use a custom recovery you'll need to first install TWRP, if it's available for your device. Otherwise you'll need to get the boot image and patch that with the Magisk app before flashing it to your device.

Not the TWRP app, the TWRP recovery image. For example, on my OnePlus 5T I'd download the image from the TWRP website and then flash with
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
It's far from certain that TWRP is available for your device though.

Sounds like you need to read up a bit on the basics... Search the web a bit.
How to use fastboot would be a good start, and also how to get a copy of your boot image if TWRP isn't available for your device.
